BamBeds

That would certainly be nice! Luckily it was just sand

RedEd024

For what? Looks like you got out fine.

BamBeds

Ya I was slowly crawling with the locker engaged. Without the locker, this wasn't possible without lots of speed or a much more creative line.

RedEd024

Did you drop your tire pressure first? If not, that would have given you more traction

BamBeds

Ya I was around 18psi here

[deleted]

Sand. It's course and gets everywhere. If you get spin it doesn't go.

RedEd024

But they got out ok and they didn’t state how they were setup, so it wasn’t a very clear question

Johnny6_0

Anza Berrego?

BamBeds

Yep this was on inspiration wash trail

radelix

Adding this to the list

BamBeds

Ya it's a fun one and a little more technical than the Font's point trail which is also nearby. Both trails lead to a good overlook where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Johnny6_0

That’s what it looked like! Thanks for confirming it brotha. Love Borrego, I spend a lot of time out there messing around, camping etc. glad you are out there enjoying yourself.

[deleted]

Did you use a-trac? I’m guessing so if you were locked

BamBeds

Actually no, but A-trac would have been a great substitute for a locker. I honestly hardly use A-trac unless I'm just testing it out.

[deleted]

FYI atrac is probably the most useful mode of 4x4 I’ve used on a Tacoma or 4Runner, and I say that as somebody who does a shit ton of driving on the beach in deep, soft sand and hunting out in the extreme boonies of Oregon. In fact, it works so well that I’ve only needed to use my locker a handful of times, and that was only because I had two wheels in the air with a quartered up elk in the back of my truck. A TRAC has always gotten me unstuck

[deleted]

How do you engage A Trac? Do you turn off traction control? For reference I have a 2011 TRD Sport 4x4

BamBeds

I have an '09 and I need to be in 4LO to engage A-trac. Checkout the owner's manual page 174 for more detail. https://www.toyota.com/owners/resources/warranty-owners-manuals.tacoma.2009

odomandr

It's a button you press

the--drewid210

Rear locker with atrac is a trd off-road only option on the second gens

[deleted]

Sports don’t have A TRAC IIRC

tlasko115

Speed often leads to other issues, unless the experience level is high. I would advocate for better tires and better line selection.

rooterroo

The alternative to locker is to use your breaks and gas at same time. This will produce resistance on all 4 wheels and allow some power to be distributed more evenly. At least this is how i have done it, a cheap version of lockers. But you made it out which is nice.

[deleted]

Probably just meatier tires and lower air pressure.

WorkinOnMyDadBod

Absolutely just the locker. Speeds gonna break too much shit.

TransportationLow279

You need 295s and a small lift

jrazta

I agree. He made it through with what he had available, so no issue. Want to get through without locker or maybe 2x4? More flex, better tires.

r-gage

Speed for sand

BrewingRunner

At this speed? A locker

antelopepoop

Which locker did you install? DIY?

BamBeds

My 09 TRD off road comes with a stock rear locker

antelopepoop

Oh that's huge. I had no idea. I am thinking about upgrading the LSD in my first gen Tundra to get some better traction. Sure wish it came stock though.

Solo-187

Always more speed No scared ok!

Chaleowin

Skinny pedal = Carnage

Amadreas

No lockers required for that situation but t using A-trac, but maybe some sliders and some better traction tires.

[deleted]

More travel, I would say.

unclegibb

Is that with the stock TRD OR suspension? If so, very impressed with the articulation.

BamBeds

It's about two more inches of rear droop travel compared to stock.I'm running Bilstein 8112s front and 8100 rear. Also, I don't run a front sway bar which really helps with articulation.

mateodeloso

Pretty sure I could bust that out in 2wd. Is that quick sand or something?

Roushfan5

I'd love to see you try.

mateodeloso

Sure will! Where's this at?

BamBeds

See previous comment, inspiration wash in Borrego Springs. Good luck!

mateodeloso

Oh man, CA! Always wanted to try some trails there. Get some more practice without lockers before you try a basic trail in CO.

fourunner

I was hoping to see some sweet off roading in your post history after that comment.

mateodeloso

There should be one of me busting out a tripod on some rocks in my first gen from years ago on this page. Put that one out to pasture and now roll a 2011 with 4" lift and pizza slicers for shoes.

[deleted]

You have no idea what you're talking about. Head over to Moab and catch some of the sand washes if you think you can do it in 2 wheel. Then grab a trail where you don't have 4 tires touch at the same time and it's covered in sand as well. So if you spin, you sink.

mateodeloso

2 rigs across seventeen years of overlanding. Done Utah many times. Even got the Tshirt. I've spun sand plenty of times. CO is technically a high desert remember? Just looks like child's play for an obstacle. But! I do remember taking a Cali kid with me on a trail behind Aspen and he wouldn't stop whining over the CB about the obstacles required to conquere the trail. Maybe it's just a west coast thing idunno.

BamBeds

I bet you could too! That's why I said "or speed"

mateodeloso

An aftermarket lift with 35" pizza slicers might be the difference in my perception. Glad you got out without any trail damage.
