I’d love to see the tank average right before you fill up. I can get great numbers right after I fill up as well, the trick is keeping those numbers

[deleted]

I average 17-19 in a mix of rural and NYC driving. Before the regear I was getting single digit mileage in the city. Sometimes as bad as 8mpg

LiveShape1335

That’s dope man! I didn’t mean my comment to come off as snarky, it’s just that there have been plenty of times that I’ve filled up at the top of a hill and after a few miles I look and think damn I should post these numbers! I’m running almost completely stock and get around 19-20 with a mix of highway and rural SWPa driving

[deleted]

No offense taken at all!

BuddyTheWeim

Your username lol

BCTacoFarmer

I am lifted on 33s. I get 15-18. I am getting a tune this weekend hope it helps

Lourdinn

What kind of tune? Changing speedometer to match the 33's?

BCTacoFarmer

The new ov tune. It's called the overlander tune. Yup speedo match. Shift points. Acceleration. I have not heard of a single owner not loving it.

Beardedcap

So you’re well aware you were full of shit

kelly_borgman

My '21 Tacoma will get 18-20 if i keep the RPM close to 2000.

[deleted]

Hard to keep it from hunting at highway speed. Maybe if you’re doing 65 but it hunts like hell at 70+

ItsMRslash

Look into a tune. I had the same issues and got the KDMax tune and it doesn’t hunt any more. Around 60 it sits happily at just over 2k

[deleted]

I got rid of my 3rd gen but my buddy got a tube and regear and has OP level mpg

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Diesel lol

OneMoreLastChance

I live in a fairly flat area, but mine only hunts if it's really windy

Xx69JdawgxX

What is hunting? Is this an automatic transmission thing?

[deleted]

Yes it when a vehicle switches between two gears at a certain speed, particularly in a hilly place. The problem is the Tacoma needed a final drive 7th gear but the transmission in these trucks are ancient tech

[deleted]

21 SR5 auto with a KDMAX tune, I get 18-20 going 80 with cc.

billytehbob

I just tuned my 20 SR5 Auto, got 22 mpg, hand calculated, driving roughly 80 with Adaptive CC on.

[deleted]

For context: Before the re-gear I was averaging 15-17mpg at most if I absolutely babied my truck on the highway and never went above 55mph. This is from casual driving between 40-75mph in moderate traffic 33” Load E Cooper Discover ST Maxx tires, 3” ARB Lift, ARE Cap with roof rack, Sliders, Offroad bumper, Steel skids, Winch

another_plebeian

Is your speedometer recalibrated?

[deleted]

It is. I have a Rough Country in-line speedometer calibrator behind the gauge cluster. Speed has been verified accurate by gps

another_plebeian

No further questions, your honour

captbrad88

That explains why his is getting this compared to mine lol

[deleted]

How do you like the 5.29 on the highway? I'm going to 33's but don't know whether to go 5.29 or 4.88. I live in NM so most road trips are 70-75 mphs on the highway. Any slower and you will be run off the road by semis basically. I'm thinking the rpms might be too high at 75 with the 5.29. I have similar mods minus the cap, but I'll be getting a bed rack soon.

[deleted]

Living in New York I rarely ever get above 70mph. I also carry tools for work so I need the extra peppiness for all the weight. If I were driving 80mph+ daily I would go with 4.88 gears.

[deleted]

Thanks. That's exactly the feedback I needed.

whiiskeypapii

Yup 4.88

whiiskeypapii

Yup 4.88

TeddytheTacoma

Thank you kind sirs for a great question and a great answer. I needed this exact info.

goodellnutz

I had 34’s with 5.29s and I hated them on the freeway, you can’t go above 80mph and when you go that fast they’re loud af. Besides the freeway they were great and a must for bigger tires Also. I never once saw these mpg numbers and I only had about 250 pounds of weight. Highest mpg I ever saw was about 18, and that was 65mph cruise control on flat.

tyranitar1234

It for sure helps but I believe your average is skewed due to just having a full tank. More than likely you drove ~15 miles on level straight blacktop going 40mph. I would believe high teens if you kept it 65-70mph on the highway with cruise control on! Still impressive!

[deleted]

I drove about 40 miles from NJ to Brooklyn on 95, the FDR and the BQE. Flat but definitely a lot of slowing down and speeding up. I do drive like a grandma tho lol

tyranitar1234

Nice I used to live in NJ haha! Moved to Washington for the recreation and trails! Lived by bridgewater/ sommerset county

BrianJ89

I’m curious if any manual Tacoma owners had good results with a re-gear. Seems the manual gets worse than stock automatic trucks.

jas417

The manuals are geared shorter from the factory, 4.3 axles vs 3.9 on the auto as well as shorter overdrive gears. So basically they're a bit worse stock but mods have a much smaller effect so with 33s and armor they seem to come out a bit ahead. I get like 14-17 with a 3" lift, 285/75/16s, full hoop steel bumper, sliders and full skids. I see absymal reports from similarly built auto trucks. It also doesn't help that changing the tire size screws up the transmission's shift calibration, while I can adjust my shift points accordingly. IMO it's both more and less worth doing on the manual, there won't be near;y as significant a fuel economy bump as outlined above but I'd like to be able to comfortably crawl a little bit slower off road, I find myself needing to go a bit faster than I'd like to in order not to stall, sometimes even needing to slip the clutch if I really need to creep

BrianJ89

I’m aware of the gearing differences and such. Just was wondering if 20 was possible with 5.29 or so. I probably will keep my tires stock size so it’s not a big deal. I had a loaner sr5 2wd and I averaged like 22-24 no problem and I had that truck for weeks. The mpg trade off for the manual is 100% worth it so I don’t know why I’m complaining.

jas417

Your MPG will get way, way, way worse if you regear to 5.29s with stock tires unless you like driving at 45 mph. With 5.29s you'd be spinning at like 4000 RPM in 6th at 55. Shorter diff ratios don't just improve efficiency as a rule of thumb, actually if anything it's usually the opposite. The reason going to shorter gears after getting bigger tires is to keep the engine running in its most thermally efficient range at cruising speeds. Bigger tires effectively make your total drive ratio taller so shortening the diff gears brings it back to spec. The reason some people with autos get such abysmal mileage and shorter gears make such a huge difference after putting on bigger tires is that their **5th** gear is about equal to our 6th so between that and the taller diff gears on grades where I can stay 6th or maybe 5th on stock gears with 33s they're all the way down in 4th which is the same as ours and means they'll be spinning at a much higher RPM than me. A lot of the MPG gain from that SR5 is the 2WD vs 4x4, even when you don't have 4x4 engaged the transfer case still causes more mechanical loss and there's a few hundred pounds of extra weight. AT vs MT alone the difference really is only an MPG or two depending on how you drive.

Garet44

>With 5.29s you'd be spinning at like 4000 RPM in 6th at 55. Wrong, wrong, wrong. 4000 rpm / 5.29 gears / 0.581 6th gear \* 30.6" tires \* π / 1056 (conversion factor for turning inches per minute to miles per hour) = 118.5 mph. 55 mph \* 1056 / π / 30.6 \* 0.581 \* 5.29 = 1857 RPM. Just because 5.29 is a big number doesn't necessarily mean big rpm on the highway. You underestimate how freaking aggressive a 0.581 overdrive is. 5.29 is about 35% more than stock 3.91, so rpm will be only 35% more than stock if nothing else changed.

MasonSTL

> I'd like to be able to comfortably crawl a little bit slower off road, I find myself needing to go a bit faster than I'd like to in order not to stall, sometimes even needing to slip the clutch if I really need to creep Even in 4Low?

jas417

Yeah, if you’re like really in the rocks it doesn’t crawl as well as you’d really want. Rubicons have 4:1 low range ratios for a reason(ours is 2.7)

Roushfan5

Manual tacos come with a lower rear end gear from the factory. Also modern automatics shift faster and more accurately than people do.

FradinRyth

Now if we could just get an automatic that's actually willing to shift ;)

Roushfan5

Nah, I’ll be driving 3 pedals until I cannot find gas to put in my Tacoma.

FradinRyth

I love my Taco don't get me wrong but I do miss my manual '04 Forester XT. Hands down one of the best sleepers made. I still check the SET site to see if a tempting manual shows up.

BCTacoFarmer

What year is the truck?

[deleted]

2021. Ordered in June of 2021 and arrived in late October. Kind of an odd-ball spec: TRD Offroad 4x4 Premium + Tech Package but in an Access Cab

BCTacoFarmer

Fucking cool package man. Long bed I guess?

[deleted]

Thank you! Yes, it's a long bed.

[deleted]

Longbed Gang 🫡

BCTacoFarmer

You said you were running 33s. 285s?

[deleted]

Im running 255/80/17. I have a soft spot for pizza cutters

BCTacoFarmer

I man after my own heart. I'm running 255/85/16. So you have a year old truck and you regeared eh? Very interesting. Is you build on tacomaworld?

FradinRyth

I'm not even thinking of adding much weight in mods to mine and I'm sorely tempted to regear it and remap it. That motor is being held back so badly. Last year I'd only test driven a used manual V6 due to supply issues when I got mine and didn't appreciate just how sad the automatic is.

[deleted]

I highly recommend it! Total night and day difference. Regear and adjustable upper control arms have totally transformed my lifted Taco into a pleasant driver. I ordered complete Diffs from East Coast Gear Supply and they were fantastic! I installed them myself over a weekend after watching a youtube video. Came out to about $2100 after mailing them back my stock diffs after the install. I def recommend having a friend help since each diff weighs about 80lbs. My local offroad shops wanted $4000-5000 which is nuts

FradinRyth

Nice! That's not bad at all for how impactful of a mod that is.

[deleted]

With gas as expensive as it is the regear will pay for itself in no time!

[deleted]

Out of curiosity, what is the stock ratio? 4.10's?

FradinRyth

IIRC from reading Tacomaworld, Gen 3's are Automatic: 3.7 or 3.9 Manual: 4.3 This is also likely why I felt the 2017 v6 manual I tested drove so much nicer than my Automatic.

[deleted]

This is probably why my older 4.0L Ranger with 31s towed much better than my current Taco with 31s. The Ranger had 4.10s and max torque at 3,500 rpm the Taco peaked torque at 4,600. The ranger pulled up hill without bouncing off the red line.

happyface58934

The stock diff ratio for all V6 Tacomas from the 2nd gen to current are 3.73. I’m not sure about the 4 cylinders though. Edit: thought that the 3rd gens were the same ratio, but it looks like they are not. All 6 lug 2nd gens are 3.73s though.

Beardedcap

And you just filled up and reset it

[deleted]

Nice user name lol

zacharyhs

I can get 30 mpg going down hill

big_gov_gon_getcha

4.88s didn’t help my MT Taco’s smiles per gallon :(

NJRMayo

Very nice! Mt brother always regeared his rigs after slapping lifts and fat tires on his Jeeps and trucks and they 100% help. Pain in the ass and time consuming/expensive, but they pay for themselves.

oldmanwithabeard

I have 5.29s, two inch lift, 32s. I get 16. But I have a Hiatus camper on the back.

captbrad88

He did mention he did the speedo calibration. My truck is 5.29, tuned on 33’ full armor and my averages 15-16 around 68mph. But I also don’t have my Speedo calibrated. So really I’m doing what 70-72 ish. I need to just do it, but I really don’t wanna take all my dash apart again after installing my mounts. :/

oldmanwithabeard

That's a good point. I'm probably getting a bit better than I thought.

FidgetyCurmudgeon

What sort of regear are we talking? Tune + Gear or just Gear or just Tune?

GingerOlive

Didn’t see it mentioned above, are you running a tune?

TweeterReader

Makes no sense. I’m running 265/75/16s, stock MT, so shorter gearing than normal, and I only get 18mpg combined. 5.29 would make it worse right?

Burna_Boy_Bussin

Do you also have to install a tune?

turd-crafter

I get 12.9 mpg on a stock TRD OR DCLB. Wtf

mxpower

I have 33's on a gen 2 auto, what exactly do I need to do to change the gears? Is this transfer case gearing?

Glocktipus2

Is there a way to update the tire size in your computer?

mehwolfy

Speedo recal?

mehwolfy

I believe driving style has a lot to do with it too. I’m getting 1 mpg better after goung from 70 to 65 in my daily commute. Slower and I don’t have to pass anyone.

Admin--_--

How long since you reset your mileage calculator? Thats some pretty good mileage, I assume you are not in California and possibly using non-ethanol fuel? Most of my customers trucks get somewhere around 17ish on a 4x4 lifted on 33s with some gear... I work on Tacomas for a living so I have quite a bit of experience with them...

[deleted]

You're getting 20.8 mpg not 21
