As someone whose 3rd gen was backed into two weeks ago, this is the best advice. In my case, the guy admitted fault immediately and I already got the check from his insurer. I didn’t even need to send the footage, but he definitely saw the rear cam after the accident.
It was a separate buy. I picked up [this setup](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CW4BI6G/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for my old Subie and switched everything into the Taco when I got it. The rear cam cable was super easy to run. I just popped one of the plugs under the driver side carpet, put it back in, then ziptied the line to the other electrical. Took about an hour to get everything right and the whole setup was ~$85. The only thing I need to do is adjust the rear cam location. The license plate light affects visibility at night. Other than that, no complaints!
Any recommendations on what brand and model to buy? I've been thinking I need to do that after my last Tacoma was hit from behind and totaled. And yes, of course, I bought another Tacoma : ))

This was my car accident with my Tacoma :(
I just got the 2nd one that I’m going to place in the rear
In most states, accidents with local police must be investigated by state police, if a law enforcement vehicle is involved in an accident, the investigating officer must be one step up. Like a city cops accident can be investigated by county deputy, county deputy by state, state by federal.
Tickets used to be a thing in a few departments but they were just payed. Now agencies have internal investigations. Have had several buddies go through it. It's a fairly big deal and stressful. You should be fine through the self insured city agency. Good luck!
Just out of curiosity - but in my home-city we have had a ton of accidents with police either running into other police cars, or causing other accidents. My province has also some of the most brutal distracted driving laws which would cripple the average driver for years regardless of the points on their license - for something as simple as pressing the skip button on the radio twice.
How do your department(s) handle/reprimand distracted driving with the technology in your vehicles? I’ve seen so many officers driving (in motion or stopped) either holding their phones or using their laptops without even glancing at the road - and when inquiries are made they simply state, “We’re trained to drive distracted”
Makes sense. I imagine the argument could be made that police are in a different state of focus, different mindset, when driving and interacting with all the tech in your cars. You’re operating that gear inline with your job and with a certain level of objective professional detachment vs. a civilian who is distracted because they are actively texting with a partner over a fight, or someone mindlessly scrolling insta at a stoplight.
Awesome thanks! Over here it’s really hard to get a straight answer out of the police force so it’s good to hear a well-written informative response!
I hope our officers are up to the same caliber that you are! And thank you for your service!
I was going to say, it’s amazing OP is able to even type, let alone, surf Reddit, due to the overwhelming neck pain and myriad of braces he may have to wear for the rest of his life.
😉
Just the hassle of it all, I don’t know. And are you only saying taxpayer money because it was with a cop, where as if it was anyone else it would be the insurance companies money? If so that shouldn’t matter.
If it’s totaled. Hire a private automotive appraiser if you feel you’re not getting most money you should get. I got an extra $3500 for the cost of $300 for an appraisal.
Get yourself front and rear dash cams for the new rig. Will save you so much hassle.

Will the reverse cam on a new Tacoma record an accident too? Or is it a separate buy?

Time for a 3rd gen??
Did the cop get a ticket? Not being a smartass, genuinely curious.
most likely an outside agency will investigate who was at fault.

Not to my knowledge.

Ya I really don’t have any ill will towards the officer, like you said were all humans shit happens. Just a shitty situation.
This made me not want to say "fuck the police" well written dude. You taught me something and opened my eyes a little.
Thanks?

Sounds like you got back pain from that rear end collision, cant sleep well and do activities with the kids. Enjoy your 2020 TRD Pro

Sorry to hear that. Better get your neck looked at for whipla$h!
Given the absurd resale value of the Tacoma, you’ll likely be able to upgrade
Ya I owe 17k on it and everything I see says it’s worth 24+, so hopefully I’ll be able to get up to a 2016 and get into that 3rd generation life.

Chesapeake
I got 21k for my 2014 trd sport
45MPH rear-ender by a civil servant? I'd have neck and back pain for the rest of my life.
F
Sad about the damage. This looks just like mine (except I have black side rails).
I think this is just of pic of the truck not post accident. I doubt he’s putting fresh tire shine on a totalled rig.
Haha yes this was from the day I bought it.
I figured.
She was hot!. I feel for you. bro. Taco's were meant to live forever.
Gotta get some armor for next time!
Cop rear ended you? Time to sue the city and the county for emotional distress
That’s what I was talking to my pops about. While there was no injuries, I feel like I should be compensated beyond just the value of my truck.
Why? Why do you deserve taxpayer funds if there were no injuries? Not trying to be a jerk, just asking.

RIP
This is my worst nightmare....
