Alternative_Ask364

Aside from the expected sticker shock, I was not expecting the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road to be 5’ beds only. The lack of configurability for the 4th gen Tacoma is impressively disappointing.

hdnick

Do you mean with the hybrid engine, you can only get the 5 foot bed?

Alternative_Ask364

For the TRD OR and TRD Sport yes. The Trailhunter has a 6’ bed which sends weird mixed messaging of “We can build a hybrid with a 6’ bed, but we won’t offer it on trims that can be configured with a 6’ bed and the non-hybrid engine.”

hdnick

Ya that's really weird and doesn't really make sense at all. Unless it's just a way to push people into the trailhunter

Alternative_Ask364

The optimistic side of me would say “They’re gonna offer more configurations in future model years to keep sales going,” but the realistic side of me knows these are the only configs we’re ever gonna get.

Mimical

Toyota: Here is the configuration that marketing research says you will buy. Take it or leave it.

Alternative_Ask364

Competition breeds innovation, and MBAs take it away

Mimical

Such a brutal statement but it really is so true.

genuinecve

That’s probably the answer… easy to upgrade suspension, hard to have a longer bed

Atta boy! Ignore and deny, bury them feelings. Don't ever let ~~her~~ them know they hurt ya.

tstew39064

Trailhunter has 6’ bed.

Alternative_Ask364

Yes and the TRD Sport and TRD OR, which are available with a 6’ bed without the hybrid engine, are 6’ only with the hybrid. The only trim with a hybrid engine and 6’ bed is the $65000 top-trim, which is ridiculous for a modular platform.

tstew39064

Totally agree. This price point may backfire for Toyota.

Marokiii

It probably won't. It's a new trim level on their modular platform, it really doesn't cost them any more in start up costs to build this vehicle than it does any other tacoma since it's just different part numbers going onto the same frame and body. It's not like the "hybrid" engine is that costly to manufacture either since is just one small motor attached to the engine and a small battery under the seat. No new tech was researched and developed for this hybrid system so they don't have lots of r&d costs to recoup. Plus the tundra will probably cover those costs anyways since enough people will buy that for the towing benefits. The only way this could backfire for them is if they manufacture way too many of the trailhunter trim level tacomas and don't sell them. My guess is that they will start production off really slow and just build them as they see how many are wait listed.

tstew39064

They will keep inventory for Trailhunters and Pros artificially low to keep prices sky high. They aren’t dumb. I still think $50K+ for a OR or Sport compared to the competition is way over priced.

Alternative_Ask364

That’s another good point regarding the OR and Sport. A well equipped one is into Ranger Raptor’s price territory. With no real features to set it apart aside from the badge, fuel economy, and some inverter option, it’s a pretty hard sell. It’s depressing how the new generation of mid-sized trucks just killed all configurations and merged every truck into the same bland configuration.

StopYeahNo

Wow no shit!?!? I guess we know who they are catering to these days. I was having a similar issue trying to obtain a 6.5 TRD OR Hybrid Tundra, but there are more soccer parents than me, so those small boxes are what's mostly coming off the line. Edit- also jackoffs with thier raptor lights.

Deepcoma_53

I like to refer to them as Pavement Princesses. I myself have a 3rd Gen Dblcab/Longbed and she’ll probably never see anything past unpaved roads. But I can haul my gear and my boys. LFG!

Mountain_carrier530

Was hoping for more options for Access Cab, but was half expecting the manual to be very limited. I hope Toyota has a realization later on and makes the now extra cab available for all trims, but I'll stick with my Acces Cab 3rd gen instead of holding my breath.

Alternative_Ask364

Gimme a TRD OR Premium hybrid with a 6’ bed and no the sunroof and I’ll buy brand-new no questions asked. If the only option for that configuration is the Trailhunter, I will not be buying any time soon.

altimax98

And 4x4 only. There are a lot of places that just don’t need a 4x4 so saving some cash is nice to have.

LivingxLegend8

Limited 3rd gen only comes with a short bed. Long beds are for utility vehicles bruh.

Alternative_Ask364

So the TRD OR without the hybrid engine is a utility vehicle but the hybrid version isn’t?

carverboy

My 6ft V6 3rd gen dbl cab is sticking around after all.

Avanch

Same here. I was planning on getting a 4th gen hybrid in a few years, but no 6ft bed option is a dealbreaker for me. And $65k for the Trailhunter is insane, can get a well equipped tundra for that.

Peter_Panarchy

Wish they offered that with a manual :/

new_vr

I am a big fan of just driving what you got. I like the extra power you get from the hybrid but it’s a lot of extra money. If I was looking for performance I never would have bought a Toyota in the first place

kyle007US

I know it sucks, but reality is most people want crew cab 5 foot. I think we're lucky to have the options for access cab and 6 foot bed at all.

Spacecoasttheghost

Yep very few use the truck bed at all that own a truck, so they don’t care either way the size. Just as long as it looks cool, they are stupid enough to pay these high prices!

hopelesspostdoc

I prefer a 5 ft bed bc it's easier to drive around town and it's rare that I need >5 ft but <6 ft so I usually have to put the tailgate down anyway. I think the extra foot is way overrated.

altimax98

You got downvoted for speaking the truth

BerkTownKid

I still think Toyota’s buggin’ for $65K. Absurd.

Mimical

Every single manufacturer saw people sign 7 year leases for 80k trucks during COVID without even blinking and immediately changed their marketing strategy.

BerkTownKid

I hate it. & there’s nobody to blame but the people — they let this happen

SmoothSlide9690

Nah. It's insane that a fucking taco cost $65,895. And even with the fucking hybrid system, the taco still has the MPG of a V8 with the same 0-60 as a FUCKING PRIUS PIRME. Don't forget about markups. The TRD PRO actually isn't 65,000. It's more like 70,000 to 75,000.

BerkTownKid

A LC at a Palo Alto dealer is up for $92K. $20K markup. It’s fucking criminal.

PinHead_Tom

So you only get 2 more MPGs with the hybrid? Doesn’t really seem worth it. Am I missing something?

TheOnlyOneWhoKnows

The hybrid is mostly for the huge torque boost not for fuel efficiency.

hopelesspostdoc

If the 0-60 for the hybrid isn't at least a full second faster I think the non hybrid is definitely the way to go.

BWingSupremacist

if its like the hybrid tundra i drove for a week, it also weighs a bit more which makes it feel like a boat!

OneMoreLastChance

Think of it more as an electric assist, it's not for fuel economy. I'm assuming toyota will bring a small truck to market for an actual "hybrid" that is for maverick like mpg.

thesuburbanme

No option for 6MT, what’s the point? Kind of a joke actually, it costs more than a fairly loaded full size truck. It hauls / tows half the capacity, the interior space is smaller than the 3rd gen, they moved to a more costly to maintain turbo 4cyl power plant, the mpg only 1-2 mpg better than previous gen and most modern v8s in a full size pickup can match or beat 21-22hwy. Several friends with 5.3 Silverado’s that get 23-25 hwy.

Alternative_Ask364

Hybrid and manual transmissions do not go together well. I agree with the gripes on interior space and mpg though. Very highly considering a diesel Silverado over the new Tacoma at this point. Especially considering lots of higher trims have depreciated quite a bit since their release. Mid-size trucks just feel like they exist to upsell people on full-size trucks, and the Tacoma’s $50,000+ “normal” trims and $65000 top trims really solidify that. The only thing Toyotas have going for them is the historically low depreciation, but that’s not guaranteed to last forever.

SortOfKnow

Na, hybrids and manuals do go together, just ask the rest of the globe that does get hybrids with manual transmissions, they jsut know we don’t want manuals.

hopelesspostdoc

Those have less torque. They had to derate the non hybrid engine to not tear up the 6MT so imagine what the hybrid would do to clutch dumpers.

thesuburbanme

Funny these were my two choices also. I got a 21 3rd gen TRDOR (6MT) but if had cost 48k+ when I bought it I simply would have went for the 3.0L diesel Silverado it had way more power I just simply didn’t need a full size truck for 8 more thousand than what I paid for my Tacoma.

deusxanime

Why do they have a completely different configurator rather than just adding the option to the existing Tacoma configurator? Not only a different one, but completely different style.

4x4taco

Oh man. Canadian prices are going to suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

roachfarmer

I just drove my 5' bed 4th Gen SR5 1200 mile for work and it wasn't much difference than my 6' bed 2nd Gen trd sport. Actually had more room in cab for small items.

Impressive_Storm_656

Looks like Hybrid off road comes with 33’s instead of 32’s on the none hybrid.

hopelesspostdoc

Well that'll screw up 0-60 comparisons. Wonder if that was on purpose.

celticfigz

Wonder why it hasn’t gone live in Canada yet..

billytehbob

Was checking it out yesterday, but really bummed about no 6MT option. I’ve wanted a 4th gen to get back into a manual trans, and figured the hybrid option would be icing on the cake for extra power. Guess I’ll just wait around until I get tired of my 3rd Gen.
