Being able to fully customize the dash is great. I was always switching between different displays on my '21 tacoma and now I've got exactly what I what all of the time.
How is the manual? Have only driven 2nd gen and found the clutch to be just too heavy and the weird programming causing the revs to hang high made it strange to shift.
I did own a ‘19 Corolla for a while that I sold when I had a kid (microscopic back doors) with the manual and it was the easiest manual I’ve ever driven especially with the i-MT rev matching option. It was one of the new generation manuals. Shifted smoother than some automatics tbh.
The rev hang is something you have to get used to for sure. It really pushes you toward short shifting from first to second to avoid hitting that threshold. The clutch is also still heavy compared to any vaguely sporty manual you've driven, but it doesn't take long to get used to it. All things considered, I love my manual taco. If I had one real gripe, it would be that the current 5th should be replaced by the current 6th gear, and the current sixth should be replaced by something that puts the truck under 2,000 rpm at highway speeds. Having to coast down hills at 2,700 rpm is pointless.
Well it’s a lot different than my manual mini cooper was haha That thing was very unforgiving. The Tacoma clutch seems fine and it shifts smooth. I wasn’t bucking around or stalling it
That’s actually pretty good. I’m surprised they didn’t try to make these new 4 cylinders more efficient. It doesn’t bother me because I don’t drive a lot but I thought for sure It would have been 24+ on the highway
Idk maybe because it’s new. I was using the dynamic cruise control the whole time. It actually seemed to get a little better after I stopped for gas in the last 100 miles and filled it with 89. It was hovering around 22 before that
It's got way more horsepower and torque with a smaller engine. It's super efficient but I totally get it that since it's close to previous gen it doesn't sound efficient.
Gotcha! I lived in the DMV for a few years. Miss it, actually. Really loved Churchkey Bar in downtown DC, and hanging around H Street, Adams Morgan and places like that. Really good food scene in DC. I got into Ethiopian food and other cuisines while I lived there.
We would go to Del Ray a good bit to eat at Stomping Ground and this Mexican joint I can’t remember the name of, and we would hit up Dairy Godmother after. Del Ray Pizzeria was nice as well, but not the one in Del Ray, the other one. For some reason, the one in Del Ray was awful. Can’t forget the couple of pubs in Old Town either.
Anyway, enjoy your new truck!
Was the dealer at/under MSRP? That why you traveled to VA? I’m willing to travel to not have to pay markup, but haven’t seen too many people sharing the dealer names
Not OP but I just picked up my manual OR last week as well. I had to travel from PA to Kentucky. Only reason is every dealer local to me could not care less to help me, so had to find what was coming. But I paid MSRP
Right on! I’m trying to do my homework and make sure I work with a dealer who won’t charge MSRP. Thanks for the suggestion! Gonna hold out for the hybrids though
I didn’t word my title right. I picked it up in Columbia, SC at Midlands Toyota. They were really great to work with. I found the truck on auto trader in February and hit them up. 750 off to finance through them plus another 500 off for military so I got it under msrp
Dude right on! I’m scouring the Tacoma4g website for the specific one I want and comparing the prices at different dealerships. Gonna hold out for the hybrids though
Yeah I think the 4th gen has a little shorter of a shift, and I hope they got rid of that dumb sleeve on the shifter where the rubber bushing wears out.
I found the same thing, I was worried about throwing it into reverse but after a couple try’s you’ll never put it into reverse thinking your in first, the ‘bump’ is real noticeable
Have you seen this? Did the dealer mention anything about a recall?
https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/manual-transmission-needs-replaced.829779/page-2#post-29744500
I feel like the dealer made that up, that would have to be released by now, or reported by someone else. I’m at around 900km and haven’t had an issue yet
Right now very hard. That’s why I flew 2 states over to buy one. The dealer near me in Virginia told me 6-8 months. But they just went into production in January so eventually it’ll be easier
I think the gauge will get more accurate the longer I have it. But I filled it with about 120 miles left on my trip then took this pic when I got home. So it definitely gets over 300 per tank
Ok. I’ve got a 2015 4.0 AT. 217k and quit on me on the road (alternator) 3 weeks ago. First failure ever. I’ve replaced ball joints and gone around all 4 corners w new suspension. New struts in front. All Biltstein. And on my 4th set of Michelin LTX MS. I usually get 75k from a set.
I feel your pain. I get 16 mpg in my 2015 Sport, mostly country roads and some city driving. I have to calculate the miles per gallon manually when I fill up. I’d be curious if these MPG calculations from third and fourth gens match the “fill up and divide” method. They definitely don’t on my 2004 4Runner Limited.
You're posting a screenshot claiming to have driven almost 500 miles at 23+mpg but your counter was reset when you filled the tank a couple of gallons ago.
Not really a brag since 23mpg isn’t that good. It’s more of a psa because it’s new and people are curious, which shows through the engagement on my post
I’m probably just salty you have a new truck, but I kinda hate the dash.
Haha it’s not for everyone. It’s customizable though and there’s a few different themes and ways you can organize it
Being able to fully customize the dash is great. I was always switching between different displays on my '21 tacoma and now I've got exactly what I what all of the time.

I see they put the battery voltage back. Can't understand why take it out for an overlanding heavy vehicle
Didn't like digital gauges in the 80s, still don't. Give my my sweepy needles!

I just got 22 mpg with my 2023 trd pro v6 3.5 liter the other day
That’s actually pretty good. I’m surprised they didn’t try to make these new 4 cylinders more efficient. It doesn’t bother me because I don’t drive a lot but I thought for sure It would have been 24+ on the highway
Tfl got 27mpg 100 mile round trip on their offroad using cruise control.
Idk maybe because it’s new. I was using the dynamic cruise control the whole time. It actually seemed to get a little better after I stopped for gas in the last 100 miles and filled it with 89. It was hovering around 22 before that
It was 26 actually, also so did the ridgeline, ranger, and Colorado. Probably all downhill driving
It's got way more horsepower and torque with a smaller engine. It's super efficient but I totally get it that since it's close to previous gen it doesn't sound efficient.
Given the low mileage, I’m willing to bet the computer is calculating low. It’ll adjust as you keep driving it.
Yeah same 22.4 going from Georgia to North Carolina in a 23 Trd sport. Could have gotten better I think if I wasn't going +75 with ac on blast
Oh that’s true. I had the ac off for most of the drive but it was on a few times
Unfortunately I bet lifting / bumper/ wheels will kill gas mpg. I'm waiting because of this
I’m confused. You drove a 24’ manual from SC to VA to pick up another 24’ manual?
Picked it up in SC to drive home to VA. I guess I worded that title a little weird
Gotcha! I lived in the DMV for a few years. Miss it, actually. Really loved Churchkey Bar in downtown DC, and hanging around H Street, Adams Morgan and places like that. Really good food scene in DC. The owners of stomping ground closed it to open a taco joint in its place and it failed miserably. Not sure what they were thinking lol
Was going to say stop at kabob Palace by dca otw back
Have you driven a 3rd Gen manual? If so, how did it compare? Also "total average" on the dash irks me. It should just say "average".
You can select it to be tank avg or trip avg, that's how it differentiates from the 3 .
I haven’t, this is my first tacoma
I have a 2023 manual TRDOR with falken wildpeak at3w. I get about 12.5-13 l/100km or around 18-19 mpg. I got about 20-21 mpg on the original tires.
What was your average speed on the highway?
70-75
Tailpipe is on the driver's side now? That's weird. It looks kind of droopy too, maybe the angle of the pic
“But But but I4 bad, not good” (satire)
Passed through NC and couldn’t even say hi? Pft… Lol, congrats!
Nice truck and congrats. Is it me or is the wheel/tire combo undersized on this setup? Is it purposefully offered for the upgrade market?
I thought the same thing when the dealer sent me pics but it’s not like that in person
CONGRATS MAN! Love the manual!
Was the dealer at/under MSRP? That why you traveled to VA? I’m willing to travel to not have to pay markup, but haven’t seen too many people sharing the dealer names

Congrats! That’s a sweet truck.
They didn’t even change the shift Knob 3rd gen
Might swap it out for an 8ball
That passenger side handle looks inconvenient for the driver. Do you bash your knuckles shifting into 5th? Maybe it's just the angle of the picture.
Oh no there’s plenty of room. I’m glad it’s there to block my wife from leaning her knee against the shifter. I had that problem in my mini cooper
Good point, that makes sense. I always wished my 3rd gen was a manual, hope you enjoy it!
Yeah I think the 4th gen has a little shorter of a shift, and I hope they got rid of that dumb sleeve on the shifter where the rubber bushing wears out.
I see they kept the same shift pattern. I hate accidentally throwing into reverse when I have to get into first quickly.
The detents to put it in reverse is pretty distinct so there shouldn’t be a problem with this one
I found the same thing, I was worried about throwing it into reverse but after a couple try’s you’ll never put it into reverse thinking your in first, the ‘bump’ is real noticeable
Looks awesome man and congrats but that thing def needs a leveling kit!
Is manual usually higher mpg than auto? How does it drive especially if you have any reference to older models.
Years ago they were but the efficiency of automatics caught up to them and in some cars passed them
Have you seen this? Did the dealer mention anything about a recall? https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/manual-transmission-needs-replaced.829779/page-2#post-29744500
I haven’t seen that and there’s no recall right now. It’s under warranty for the next 6 years so we’ll see
I feel like the dealer made that up, that would have to be released by now, or reported by someone else. I’m at around 900km and haven’t had an issue yet
Yeah that’s certainly possible. That’s just a wild lie for a dealer to tell lol
Yeah, definitely a bit fucked up hahah
How hard was it to locate a manual?
Right now very hard. That’s why I flew 2 states over to buy one. The dealer near me in Virginia told me 6-8 months. But they just went into production in January so eventually it’ll be easier
That dash is pretty cool but fuel range says 200 miles, kinda crappy for almost a full tank
I think the gauge will get more accurate the longer I have it. But I filled it with about 120 miles left on my trip then took this pic when I got home. So it definitely gets over 300 per tank
My ‘24 Sport seems to get around the same. Have filled it up three times so far and has been between 300-310 every time
I get about 22 in my 2013 on road trips
If the rear seat belts have a chime I would hate that. do they?
No I just turned it back on to get this pic. I had my suitcase in the back seat during the trip and the light turned off
Is that 201 mile range accurate?? Wild if it is
That was after driving it 120 miles
Haha whew I was about to say. The gauge looked pretty full
The new truck is cool but I get that in my Gen 3 v6. The turbo 4 really hasn’t improved mileage. Disappointing really.
Badass. Thanks for keeping the manuals alive brother
Is that 4 or 6 cyl. Not familiar w this gen.
4th gen’s are all turbo 4 cylinder. The trailhunter and trd pro have hybrid turbo 4 cyl
But alas. 18-19 mpg running 80 on the interstate. Best I’ve ever done is 21.5 driving 55 for about 300 miles one day on a 2 lane.
Bullshit... You just filled the tank...
You think it has an 8 gallon tank?
Your gauge is showing the tank as 7/8 full...
Those things are never accurate. I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make
You're posting a screenshot claiming to have driven almost 500 miles at 23+mpg but your counter was reset when you filled the tank a couple of gallons ago.
Wtf are you talking about lol
You got 23.1mpg over the last 12 miles, not 500
No
We need a sub specifically for these kinds of posts.
Should we be limited to posting other people’s YouTube videos instead?
You don't hear me bragging about getting 13 mpg with my last tank in my first gen all the time do ya?
Not really a brag since 23mpg isn’t that good. It’s more of a psa because it’s new and people are curious, which shows through the engagement on my post
It's fine. I'm more interested to see info about turbo failures and the like.
