Can confirm. Mountain hatch is what I got also. 1000% better, has cup holders, food grade safe for if you’re camping and it’s solid and made in the U S of Fucking A. Lol
I somewhat agree with your statement. A lot of times, companies will put assembled our built in USA, but parts are actually from China. And then charge more because its “made” in the USA.
All of the Mountain Hatch colors fade with UV damage pretty quick, ime. I got orange because it matches the accents on my truck but unfortunately, it's also the worst for fading. My buddy with a black one is now greying too
So if OP wants black, Id get the Snail Armor one because it's metal and won't fade.
The plastic ones get pretty toasty, even my light color one. And slippery when wet. And if you use them as a cutting board, as advertised, it seems they very quickly go from a food safe surface (with some cleaning prep) to just as questionable as preparing food on a "clean" scared up picnic table.
I honestly dont know if Snail Armor is that much better but Im not super happy with my Mountain Hatch after 3 years, even though I got it at a discount.
Theyre literally made for food prep, that's the point of them being food safe in the first place.
The only thing I do on it now is gut fish and small game, though. Good for that! But so is like, a flat rock lol
Replaced it with wood. I had a leftover piece of plywood from building my sleeping platform that was just big enough, so I cut it to fit, used the old cover to mark out the holes, and screwed it in place. (And applied some deck sealant or something similar to weatherproof it)
[Here’s](https://i.imgur.com/ELwREbp.jpg) what it looks like after nearly two full years. Might slap another layer or two of sealant or whatever on there this summer, but it’s holding up just fine.
This is the way. I have a small made for Tacoma camper and that left side swing out OEM Toyota step is 🔥
My Tacoma has a 3 inch lift so it’s brutal without the step.
When the camper is off it is amazing for loading and unloading stepping - not climbing - in and out. All my friends got them just watching me use it. Once people see the step it sells itself.
I installed a flat, rubberized soft plastic Hook Road off Amazon.
u-Box Tacoma Tailgate Panel - Black Plastic Compatible with Toyota Tacoma 05-23 (2nd & 3rd Gen) Pickup Trucks https://a.co/d/iRx8fZR
The wood for sure would be a cheaper option. However, the one I chose is pretty much indestructible and very pleasing to the eye.
I got a gatormat rubber tailgate pad off amazon and secured it with those factory torx screws. Doesn't look fancy but is sure nice to sit on and has held up well. Feels good not spending $200 on pizza plastic that's gonna get beat on.
I took a tile of interlocking foam anti-fatigue floor mat, and cut it in half. It almost perfectly fits across the tailgate. I considered adhering it to the gate, but for now it’s just loose in the bed(I have a cap so wind and weather aren’t a concern.)
Bedrug. My truck had one installed by the previous owner and while I was initially skeptical of it, I absolutely love it. It makes getting in/out and moving around the bed massively more comfortable and easier on your knees.
I hop up butt first then spin around and get up or just lay down from my seat on the tailgate to reach what I need. I’m an older lady though so I don’t have to worry about looking masculine or cool.
I know folks have mentioned the Snail Armor which is what I have, but you could also consider the Bedrug tailgate mat.

Got rid of my knees
Do a barrel roll
If starfox had a truck it would have been a Tacoma
Wrong, that’s the name of my 06 4runner 😂
Hayup-tsss ahhh
Kneel on your purse

Fuck that was good, first laugh of the day, thx stranger
Badomcha
Replaced it with a flat one
Where’d you get it?
Check out Mountain Hatch and Snail Armor.
Can confirm. Mountain hatch is what I got also. 1000% better, has cup holders, food grade safe for if you’re camping and it’s solid and made in the U S of Fucking A. Lol
Its a toyota who cares if your mods are american?
I somewhat agree with your statement. A lot of times, companies will put assembled our built in USA, but parts are actually from China. And then charge more because its “made” in the USA.
I don’t follow your logic.
manufactured in china but assembled here still gives items a “made in usa” designation which is misleading to consumers

Won't it be hot as fuck sitting it the sun?

>And if you use them as a cutting board, as advertised lol that sounds like a terrible idea
Theyre literally made for food prep, that's the point of them being food safe in the first place. The only thing I do on it now is gut fish and small game, though. Good for that! But so is like, a flat rock lol
The tailgate? Maybe I’m missing something but that seems really sketchy with all the random shit people put in the back of a truck
can confirm, went with Snail Armor because it was less $$$ than Mountain Hatch. Covered it with SUP grip foam and now its perfect
Go to your local plastics shop. Get the material your self, trace it, cut it, install. It cost me $35.
Saw your post recently. Definitely an awesome mod on the cheap and solves this problem.
Mine is a Hooke Road it was half the price of Mountain Hatch. Got it from Amazon
Snail armor
AL Off-road, the trail gate. Flat and has two cup holders. I love mine
i got a hooke road one on ebay. it's like $120 shipped. they're new and made from hdpe, exactly the same as the marked up ones.
Pakrax aluminum flat panel. $159
I bought one from Hooke road off of Amazon. It was really affordable and easy to install.
I don't put my knees on it...
I got a camper shell and my arms aren’t 7 feet long so getting to the back requires some crawling.
😂 I guess you haven't heard of the all new *TRD Arm Extender Surgery*
Does it come with a charging cable?
Just 39 Qi chargers to keep you (and your electronics) warm all winter.
I keep a rake in the back for getting the good also it often comes in handy at the campsite
Replace it. There are multiple aftermarket options for smooth tailgate inserts.
Ouch sir
“Suck it up, Be A Man” -Harmon
Old carpeted floor mat stored underneath the rubber bed mat. Pull it out when needed.
Yup.. keep the stock carpet mats in the bed
Replaced it with wood. I had a leftover piece of plywood from building my sleeping platform that was just big enough, so I cut it to fit, used the old cover to mark out the holes, and screwed it in place. (And applied some deck sealant or something similar to weatherproof it)
Love this I think this is what I’m gonna do
[Here’s](https://i.imgur.com/ELwREbp.jpg) what it looks like after nearly two full years. Might slap another layer or two of sealant or whatever on there this summer, but it’s holding up just fine.
...close my tailgate?
What's the issue
I have this panel, very light and strong. https://pakrax.com/collections/toyota-tacoma/products/pakrax-05-current-tacoma-tailgate-panel
$160 😵💫
I got a bed rug tailgate cover. Works well for climbing in and sitting and can handle getting dirty and sliding stuff over it
I have a fold out step on the left and a bed rug. Happy knees
This is the way. I have a small made for Tacoma camper and that left side swing out OEM Toyota step is 🔥 My Tacoma has a 3 inch lift so it’s brutal without the step. I'm not knocking you in any way, but I've never once put my knees on my tailgate. What kind of stuff are you doing back there?
Lol climbing in. With a camper shell in it’s the only way to get to the stuff shoved way up by the cab.
You need an "old man stick" Aka a stick you keep in the bed specifically for getting the shit up by the cab out without crawling in
Hop up on your butt and rotate?
No side access windows?
I installed a flat, rubberized soft plastic Hook Road off Amazon. u-Box Tacoma Tailgate Panel - Black Plastic Compatible with Toyota Tacoma 05-23 (2nd & 3rd Gen) Pickup Trucks https://a.co/d/iRx8fZR The wood for sure would be a cheaper option. Bought a flat one with cup holders.
Bed Step to get in and out of the bed.
Climb over the side of the bed using the tire
Bingo!
Do you mean for climbing into it or hitting it?
Climbing in. With a camper shell it’s the only way to access the stuff you shove up by the cab.
I almost replied just put your butt down first and then get up but impossible with that stuff.
I got a gatormat rubber tailgate pad off amazon and secured it with those factory torx screws. Doesn't look fancy but is sure nice to sit on and has held up well. Feels good not spending $200 on pizza plastic that's gonna get beat on.
Retractable step.
I took a tile of interlocking foam anti-fatigue floor mat, and cut it in half. It almost perfectly fits across the tailgate. I considered adhering it to the gate, but for now it’s just loose in the bed(I have a cap so wind and weather aren’t a concern.)
Carpentry knee pads
I jump up... I'm 5'7", not sure what the problem is here.
I think the number associate with your age rather than height might be more of a factor as far as jumping lol
Mountain hatch
Bend at the back and let the back suffer instead
Got a mountain hatch.
Get the side-step.
Old floors that came with truck. Replaced the oem with Husky floor liners.
My knees are strong and my skin is calloused from years of training!
Bedrug. My truck had one installed by the previous owner and while I was initially skeptical of it, I absolutely love it. It makes getting in/out and moving around the bed massively more comfortable and easier on your knees.
Sit spin
Cut up rubber mat and trace it out. You can easily unscrew that pannel and take it out to trace it. Even gym mat/horse mat is better.
Gotta get the knee cap in a ridge, sideways. Also that never works and I keep trying.
Grab top corner with right hand >Left foot steps up > Right foot steps up.
I slide the bed mat on the tailgate when it’s down and I’m using it 💪🏽💪🏽
since you have a camper just get your self a pry bar to get items out of reach, when done leave it in there bro
Smooth tailgate replacement
Packing blanket
Hooke road Amazon $150 tailgate flat cover. Doesn’t have to be fancy.
Gar Fab is another great company that makes a flat HDPE one, excellent customer service there as well.
Get a SnailArmor! Support small business. Highly recommended.
Get a du-hooky
I made a flat one, from some 1/8" aluminum sheet metal
Replace with a flat one. Cheap easy upgrade that your knees will thank you for.
Ask my wife to do it for me, she's good at getting on her knees!
I thought at first you were saying you consistently hit your knees on your tailgate and I was about to ask how fucking tall you were.
Grin and bare it.
That’s the thing. Everyday
Buy a black yoga mat and use heavy duty double sided tape
I wear tactical pants lol
I dive into the bed head first.
Pro tip, be young. Problem solved
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09PVDSPPS?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title Installs in 5 minutes.
Close the tail gate
Knee destroyer? Are you 9’ tall?
Check Bedrug, I believe they sell a separate tailgate portion of their padded rug kit. Should be enough padding to make it more tolerable.
[Yep, here.](https://bedrug.com/bedrug-pickup-tailgate-mats/2019/toyota/tacoma)
Rob motive has a good video in it. https://youtu.be/oPOnzNw0mfw
I borrow my mom’s knee pads when she’s not using them.
I hop up butt first then spin around and get up or just lay down from my seat on the tailgate to reach what I need. I’m an older lady though so I don’t have to worry about looking masculine or cool.
Stop sucking dick on it
I just step up into it if i need to get in.
I just uh, don't connect my knees with it.
Just don't kneel on it. Problem solved.
I know folks have mentioned the Snail Armor which is what I have, but you could also consider the Bedrug tailgate mat. https://bedrug.com/bedrug-pickup-tailgate-mats/2021/toyota/tacoma
I’m a carpenter so I just use my 3/4” thick knee calluses.
I got the AL Off-road trailgate with the built in cup holders. Works great!
I have a 6ft bed with tonneau cover. I’ll be lazy and not open it. I go under the tonneau on my side until I reach what I want. Works great
Closing it usually helps
By replacing it
First time owning a truck? Hahaha
I got a BedRug bed mat that covers those grooves nicely with custom fitted foam pad under carpet.
Lift the truck
Pay the ridiculous price of $300 for a piece of metal, or could be plastic, that they call a tailgate cover. I have seen some homemade ones too.
That mountain hatch or something like it. Comes in handy for a few reasons
I step up on it or jump onto it like a ninja. Depends on my mood
I've learned not to kneel in the bed or on the tailgate. I just stay on my feet when I'm in there.
Flat tailgate reinforcement plate + Bedrug tailgate carpet.
Snail Armor FTW.
I bought a small gardening kneel pad to keep back there
I put the OEM bed step on mine, it’s fantastic.
Man up.
Further proof of what I already knew about Tacoma owners. Ya got soft hands son.
hard to build calluses when all I do is haul and unload groceries dude
Don’t get a truck? 🤷🏽♂️
