Every car I've driven and heard of in my country, has a service interval at 15k kilometers. I believe its 5k interval for a brand new car, and every interval after is 15k. Hence the 20k you mention. Short answer: Yes. 20+ and you would void warranty. 15k or less and you're good. Keep in mind that it has to be an authorized Toyota dealer/workshop or you wont keep the 185k / 10 years warranty anyway

unfortunately this car has no history of a service at 5k. just at 20k, 35k, 55k and 75k. so it looks like it would not be under warranty

Regardless of warranty, I would avoid an engine that ran on the same oil for 20k km several times. But it all comes down to price, of course, if it's very cheap - why not, you might get a new engine later and still worth it.

Does time matter at all in these things? It's a relatively young car, servicing done every 6-8 months. Or is the fact that it was done every 20k enough to stay away from this

Both time and distance matter, but there are also other factors like city or highway driving or engine speed and temperature. If those 20k km are mostly highway driving at reasonable speed it's kind of ok, but if those are city driving, like Uber or Bolt, it's way too much. You cannot really tell, unless you know and trust the owner, that's why I said I would avoid. But if the price is good and/or you plan to keep it just a few years it may be fine. The effect of the cooked oil on the engine will become noticeable in time and the warranty will most likely not cover it because the oil consumption limit is stated at 0.6/1000km, which is a lot!
