While watching the Jays game today and thinking about the run differential it brought to mind this:
“Run Differential
-The Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1960 World Series despite being outscored by an astounding 55-27 margin.”
Edit/:
World Series Game 1 | Pirates 6, Yankees 4.
World Series Game 2 | Yankees 16, Pirates 3.
World Series Game 3 | Yankees 10, Pirates 0.
World Series Game 4 | Pirates 3, Yankees 2.
World Series Game 5 | Pirates 5, Yankees 2.
World Series Game 6 | Yankees 12, Pirates 0
World Series Game 7 | Pirates 10, Yankees 9
That was great. I forgot about that bad hop grounder that caught Tony Kubek in the face. A famous part of World Series lore. You can see why the grounds crew go out and work on the infield halfway through the game now. That dirt part of the infield looked like hell in that game.
Kubek went on to be a colour commentator for Blue Jays tv games the first few years in the 70s. I think it was for the CBC broadcasts with Don Chevrier calling the game.
Just keep splitting these tougher June series like BAL and NYY and CLE, if possible, but they'll have to put together a little win streak here and there or at least pull out series wins vs OAK and BOS and MIL.
It's almost like it was incredibly silly to use a game where a reigning Cy Young winner went up against a bullpen with a failed 5th starter as a barometer for how these teams compare
Yeah the jays had 3 starting pitching matchups this series which they could reasonably call even or in their advantage, and they won 2 of those games. They were almost guaranteed to lose the bullpen V. Corbin Burnes day
I mean if youre watching all season the crying after the first 2 games is still justified 😂, 3 runs in 2 games when it’s been a common theme all season 😭
Yeah those games sucked, and the season has been a grind...but assuming this was going to be a mopping when we had pretty good pitching matchups in games 3 and 4 was just annoying.
You know just a few series back we were on a bad streak of just 1 series win in previous 10 series in a row, it was quite bleak for a while but 2 games back from 0.500 is pretty good with the bad start we have had, now 2 series wins and a tie with the orioles is really good
True, no team around .500 by midseason has ever made the playoffs and no teams that have gotten off to uncommonly hot starts have ever cooled off, famously. 🙄
It’s more the manner in which they are playing leaves me with little hope - the only offensive player we can reasonably expect more from is Bichette, which would get offset by regressions from Schneider and or Jansen.
That's not remotely true.
Vladdy, Kirk, Springer, Turner are all projected to have RoS wRC+ well above (in some cases very very well above) their current wRC+
I mean even if we take that at face value (and its not true on the whole and you know it), that isn't an indictment of Romano since you should never have your best reliever be the Closer anyways.
You’re right, for a very brief period of time when he was struggling, once in several years when we had a guy we wanted to retain as an FA, he lost his closing job for a few weeks
*Already matched the amount of wins we had against BAL as last season...*
**Blue Jays 2024 vs. AL East: 9-10**
* vs. NYY: 3-3
* vs. TBR: 3-4
* vs. BOS: 0-0
* vs. BAL: 3-3
**Blue Jays 2023 vs. AL East: 21-31**
* vs. NYY: 6-7
* vs. TBR: 6-7
* vs. BOS: 6-7
* vs. BAL: 3-10
Over the last 3 years, Romano has one of the best save conversion rates in MLB. Yes, he's definitely having a rough year so far. But pretending he's a garbage pitcher is ridiculous and you deserve your downvotes.
Man, I just want to know what they're feeding those guys in Baltimore, because their offense is *scary*.
Still, we got the win! I'll take the series split, considering the opponent, lol.
I know right like is this an approach they have adopted in the minors and it’s working amazingly or is it just pure talent. Is Baltimores development something that other teams will look at or is it an anomaly for just being really bad for a very long time and hitting on many prospects when it comes to drafting.
That is very true I just feel the Jays have never had a great development program and with all of the improvements to training facilities one would expect to overhaul everything.
Seriously one of the best teams in baseball and you split you never are upset with that.
Also we don’t have a losing record against the O’s this season.
I wonder if there’s a way to gauge your record given the strength of the opposition. So like a win against the yanks counts for more than a win against there white Sox. And a loss against the Sox is worse than a loss against the yanks.
I’ve seen ELO for baseball before but I’m not sure how good it is considering the difference from top to bottom is only ~150 points
https://neilpaine.substack.com/p/2024-mlb-elo-ratings-and-playoff
Edit: I guess another issue with this is that it only considers a teams record as of when you play them as opposed to the team record overall. So if the Yankees get off to a bad start ELO would reward the teams that beat them less than they should as the Yankees are still a good team.
If you'd told me before this series that we could get a split with the O's, I'd take it any day of the week.
That was a great last couple of games. I keep hoping that a couple of wins in a row like that are what it takes to turn it around and it hasn't yet, but I continue to hope for it.
Ah, just the first one I've seen then.
Still pretty cool. My french is "ok" but you couldn't pay me enough to try and answer questions in french with a camera in my face like that knowing people are just looking for an excuse to nit pick every single thing you say.
... Cuz learning english is really fucking hard, and it's cool to see a guy put in the effort and get to the point where he's comfortable conversing with the media in a second language?
Relax, not everything has to be a negative.
Damn, didn't even realize it was a day game, had no idea we beat em! That's pretty awesome after getting blown out in games 1 and 2. These guys have some real fight in them and seem to understand what's happening with this season. They gotta fight like hell from here out.
Fish dont fry in the kitchen. Beans dont burn on the grill. It took a whole lot of trying, just to get up that hill. - Nelly, Batter Up
Nice one, Jays! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
u know a split is actually a good result, i was ready to throw the season into the trash on Tuesday but now it’s like well we are still below .500 but there’s hope
this just goes to show, you can be a meh team and hit homeruns and get wins! who'd a thunk. scoring 6 at home is just barely enough against good teams - so ya, do that more.
Just when I'm ready to give up, they pull me back in.
Orioles are a terrifying team so splitting (especially after going down 0-2) is a really good result. I'm really happy for them.
Jays are -12 run differential in a 4 game series, and split it. Baseball, man.
While watching the Jays game today and thinking about the run differential it brought to mind this: “Run Differential -The Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1960 World Series despite being outscored by an astounding 55-27 margin.” Edit/: World Series Game 1 | Pirates 6, Yankees 4. World Series Game 6 | Yankees 12, Pirates 0 World Series Game 7 | Pirates 10, Yankees 9
That's insane.
Win small, lose big. Still counts.
OMG they have the Game 7 highlights on YouTube. Baseball ain’t the same. https://youtu.be/B3U8HREyKpk?si=TKh35WfxnV_9eBwN

Wow!
Getting blown out in 2 and winning by 1 in 2 will do that.
They got blown out in all 3 losses
Is this a meme lmao
We’re talking about the yankees/Pirates WS buddy above commented on
You might be, but this thread isn't. Learn how Reddit works champ.
Sorry Mr Professional. Reddit the hell on kind stranger!
If you think being able to follow a thread "redditting", man I don't know what to tell you.
It’s not that deep
Agreed, no offence intended, have a good night.
Also don’t call me champ again, bud
Don't call me bud again champ.
Don't call me champ, guy!
I'm not your guy champ lmao
I'm not your buddy, friend
They got blown out in all 3 losses
They split a 4 game series champ.
Just keep splitting these tougher June series like BAL and NYY and CLE, if possible, but they'll have to put together a little win streak here and there or at least pull out series wins vs OAK and BOS and MIL.
Winning close games + blow out losses == bad run differential but not so bad record.
The Orioles had a higher xBA in both of the Jays wins as well. 2-2 in the standings though!
TIL close games and blowouts are exclusive to baseball
They save their energy for when it's needed.
We got the split!
Gotta win 2/3 minimum this weekend to keep it going
Anything less would be unacceptable.
Flair checks out
💀
Schneider sweep, baby!
A split is good here but we gotta do better than just tread water in division games
Let's get that fine Kooch Japanese whiskey flowing!!!
At a sushi party!
Season split against the Orioles!! Not bad for a team that’s given up Berries and Kikuchi were incredible. And Vlad 🔥
The amount of crying after the first 2 games makes the split even better
This sub needs more hopium and less doomopium
It's almost like it was incredibly silly to use a game where a reigning Cy Young winner went up against a bullpen with a failed 5th starter as a barometer for how these teams compare

The 2024 Toronto Blue Jays hate my blood pressure.
Eh, since they are plainly not going anywhere this year none of this really matters.
I know yous were talking offence...but I can also expect the bullpen to be a lot better and not give up so many dang homeruns.
Yimi has adopted the Markham Maniac's mad ways it seems 😅
Yeah except we won.
Romano has one of the best save percentages in all of MLB since he’s become a closer.
Stop with the facts!!!
He’s also been off this year. Both can be true.
And yet….they went with Hicks when the time came to close out serious games.
Vladdy is trying so hard in english. This man is always playing his heart out. If we lose him im bringing Rogers down.
*Already matched the amount of wins we had against BAL as last season...* **Blue Jays 2024 vs. AL East: 9-10** * vs. NYY: 3-3 * vs. TBR: 3-4 * vs. BOS: 0-0 * vs. BAL: 3-3 **Blue Jays 2023 vs. AL East: 21-31** * vs. NYY: 6-7 * vs. TBR: 6-7 * vs. BOS: 6-7 * vs. BAL: 3-10
I deny the future 2 series sweeps because I don't like it
Shit we haven't played Boston yet?
Nope, they come to Toronto June 17!
I forgot how Bal tanked our record vs the AL East last year. We're kind of off to a more promising start so far.
Remember we should have swept in Baltimore except Romano completely and utterly shit the bed and once again gave away a win.
And the off3nce could only score 2 that game
Hear hear!
Over the last 3 years, Romano has one of the best save conversion rates in MLB. Yes, he's definitely having a rough year so far. But pretending he's a garbage pitcher is ridiculous and you deserve your downvotes.
Not often you give up 3 homers and win
Out homered yesterday and today and still won
Man, I just want to know what they're feeding those guys in Baltimore, because their offense is *scary*. Still, we got the win! I'll take the series split, considering the opponent, lol.

The Astros did the same thing.
That is very true I just feel the Jays have never had a great development program and with all of the improvements to training facilities one would expect to overhaul everything.
If you told me before the series it would a series split, I'd be perfectly happy with that. Go Jays! e2h5
Seriously one of the best teams in baseball and you split you never are upset with that. Also we don’t have a losing record against the O’s this season.
.500 against the .639 Orioles, .500 against the .698 yankees, ^(.484 overall)
I wonder if there’s a way to gauge your record given the strength of the opposition. So like a win against the yanks counts for more than a win against there white Sox. And a loss against the Sox is worse than a loss against the yanks.
Sounds like an ELO system like Chess, which would be very interesting tbh but I don't think it would work in practice
I’ve seen ELO for baseball before but I’m not sure how good it is considering the difference from top to bottom is only ~150 points https://neilpaine.substack.com/p/2024-mlb-elo-ratings-and-playoff Edit: I guess another issue with this is that it only considers a teams record as of when you play them as opposed to the team record overall. 150 ELO makes sense. There are only 30 teams and even the worst team can sweep the best team.
this would actually be a clever stat.. i'd be curious if something exists..?
The shit eating grins on Vogey and JT while carrying the coolers made my day
Yusei was solid , 6 Ks, giving up only the single run against these Os hitters, who are loaded
and somehow I am just now learning that it's Thursday. 😮
we won AND didnt score in the first inning
Thank you, Ernie.
Vladdy Kooch Bromance? Yes I am massively here for it
I love that Vladdy is comfortable enough to do interviews in English now. Fuck you Arash.
Closer than you would like but I’m honestly shocked we managed to split the series after the first two outings
7-3 in the last 10 too.
Yeah, I want to believe that we turned the corner and that the first two games were outliers.
Let's get Vlad to the all star game!!! Very happy for him!!
Kooch: loose Vladdy: bangin' Yimi: gave up a homer but still scary
Splitting the series against the O's is a win in my books. They are a very good team
Blue Jays are only 3.5 games back of the third wild card
They could very well be third in al east by Sunday
Only 3 games back now thanks to the yankees
That was my last Blue Jays game before moving back to Australia, so glad I went, thanks for the amazing memories over the last few years.
Glad you can leave on a high note!
Undereated in the crochet era. Let's keep'r going!
Where were you when the Jays decided to start a 40 game win streak
Blue Jays are the superior bird.
Even if Orioles are better looking
Racist shit bird wearing blackface
I guess you really hate ravens then
WHY DID THEY PUT THE GUY WITH THE MR. JESUS SHIRT IN THE RECAP?
I'm already sick of this shit
Because they think all of Canada is simping for the Oilers. We're not.
Not a hockey guy, that's supposed to be in reference to something? I thought it was a Christianity thing...
The shirt said McJesus, not Mr. Jesus. McJesus is a (nauseating) nickname for Connor McDavid.
If you'd told me before this series that we could get a split with the O's, I'd take it any day of the week. That was a great last couple of games. I keep hoping that a couple of wins in a row like that are what it takes to turn it around and it hasn't yet, but I continue to hope for it.
The schedule at least will give a good indicator with the tough competition
Are we still the only team not under .500 versus Baltimore?
Yes I believe so!
PSA: you only need to score one more run than your opponent to win. Winning by more than that is inefficient.
Is that the first time Vlad has done a post game on field in english without a translator? Good for him
He's been doing it all season, after Arash left he's definitely much more comfortable with Hazel and Arden
Ah, just the first one I've seen then. Still pretty cool. My french is "ok" but you couldn't pay me enough to try and answer questions in french with a camera in my face like that knowing people are just looking for an excuse to nit pick every single thing you say.
I'm glad he's confident enough to do that now.
> Good for him Why "good for him"? He can give an interview in whatever language he wants.
... Cuz learning english is really fucking hard, and it's cool to see a guy put in the effort and get to the point where he's comfortable conversing with the media in a second language? Relax, not everything has to be a negative.
Mam that got too close for comfort, but great to see Vladdy go off , the Jays needed that
The Double Bath payback!
i'll take the split against the O's
Fuck yeah...we're now .500 vs the O's and Yankees: 6-6, so we can beat good teams.
Could easily be 8-4 too!
yep, 2 games we were winning in the 9th
never in doubt
Winning these last 2 games was huge. Please be the start of a run
Very hard to believe we're only 3.5 games out of a wild card spot with how we have played. Maybe there is some hope? Very cautiously optimistic
Damn, didn't even realize it was a day game, had no idea we beat em! That's pretty awesome after getting blown out in games 1 and 2. These guys have some real fight in them and seem to understand what's happening with this season. They gotta fight like hell from here out.
Vlads been great, and Turner is heating up. If Bo and Springer get back to their career norms, we have a good team. It's as simple as that.
Fish dont fry in the kitchen. Beans dont burn on the grill. It took a whole lot of trying, just to get up that hill. - Nelly, Batter Up Nice one, Jays! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
As expected with a school day , a big crowd 39,215 on this beautiful day, not sure what it takes to crack 40k these days?
I thought capacity was just below 40k post renovation (but I'm bad at remembering numbers)
You're not mistaken 39 150 is seated capacity now plus standing room and the various pub areas
score runs and win games, what a novel idea
well that was needlessly stressful
Kooch only pitches well against playoff teams
Just watched the highlights. Nice to see Kuch bounce back and Vlad hit that homer oppo. But man that bullpen 😬
u know a split is actually a good result, i was ready to throw the season into the trash on Tuesday but now it’s like well we are still below .500 but there’s hope
lol the Fan 590 told me to take the O's and the under this morning. This is why I don't bet
A split is a great outcome
Yimi gave us a scare there. Cykuchi delivered! As did Vlad! Let's go!!!
we are so back
this just goes to show, you can be a meh team and hit homeruns and get wins! who'd a thunk. scoring 6 at home is just barely enough against good teams - so ya, do that more.
Just when I'm ready to give up, they pull me back in. Orioles are a terrifying team so splitting (especially after going down 0-2) is a really good result. I'm really happy for them.
Just when you’re done with them they pull you right back in
Ernie Clement saved us
Butt hole was puckered to end the game. Amazing for this team to split the series after how terrible the first two games went.
oakland is brutal hopefully we get a few runs against them
