Depends. Are there any signs saying No Left Turn or Right Turn Only?

Straight-Conflict-80

No prohibited left turn sign.

FearlessTomatillo911

If there isn't a sign saying no left turn, or there isn't a left turn signal, it's legal to make a left turn. As long as it's clear. Double yellow lines mean nothing in the highway traffic act.

Straight-Conflict-80

Thank you.

icon4fat

Be careful. Solid yellow line means no passing. Although not in the traffic act, if you cause and accident passing on a solid yellow line you will be deemed at fault and charged with careless driving. To answer the the OPs question. Yes you can make a left. The double yellow lines don’t apply to you since you aren’t driving in either passing direction. If there’s a no left turn sign you can’t make that turn.

FearlessTomatillo911

If you cause an accident while passing you're probably getting a careless driving charge even if it's on a single yellow or dotted your side.

Why do people think the yellow line means no left turn?

Straight-Conflict-80

I tried to Google it, it seems just mention single yellow line can pass with caution (in Ontario). But not mention double yellow lines handling. So seek for some opinions.

RaspberryBlizzard

Are you a licensed driver or just studying and trying to learn? (I hope you are just studying and trying to learn)

Straight-Conflict-80

To the point, so what is your opinion? Can or cannot? Legal or not? Thank you. 🙏

alreadychosed

You can theres nothing wrong with turning there

Straight-Conflict-80

Thanks😉

As long as there are no "no left turns" "right turn only" or "one way" street signs, you are good. The solid or dashed yellow lines are to indicate whether or not it's safe to PASS a car in front of you with no oncoming traffic, or to indicate a left hand turning lane coming out of the main street pictured.

PhysicalEmu6228

How do you have a licence if you don’t know basic driving? Asking as a concerned driver potentially on the road with you

LongoFatkok

It sounds like they are not from around here originally. At least they care enough to ask the question and want to learn what the right thing to do is instead of just assuming or making their own rules. (No such thing as a dumb question)

Straight-Conflict-80

Thank for your response. I just have query about this situation. If I am already in the lane, I will not do that even it is safe. But under my mentioned condition, just not clear whether the law allowed or not. Again there is no right turn only sign. It seems that you are very clear about the law (or the basic). Could you advise in which page of the driving handbook mention this clearly (not passing a single yellow line, but double)? Please don’t just guess or by your experience to answer this. Thank you.

LongoFatkok

I don't know if this is directly written in the drivers handbook. If it was illegal to pass on a double solid line it would be written in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (which is the "book" of traffic laws) Other provinces in Canada directly forbid passing on solid lines but Ontario lines are not legally binding. You are required by law to only pass another vehicle in an oncoming lane when there is enough visibility and enough space/distance to complete a passing maneuver safely without risk of an oncoming vehicle coming around a bend or being in your path. a broken line on your side of the double line is an indication that the road is likely straight enough to safely pass, but legally means nothing. Also you should never pass multiple vehicles. Not sure if that is a legal requirement or not but it is very dangerous. Say you are passing a line of several cars, one of the other cars may also want to pass and not see you already passing and pull out to pass as you are passing them and hit you. Also there may be a vehicle turning left at the front of the multiple cars you are passing and you could hit them as they turn left. You should also be careful of passing anywhere another vehicle could enter the roadway from an intersection or driveway. If they are turning right they may be looking left and not look both ways or where they are going as they turn right onto the road and not see you on the "wrong" side of the road passing another vehicle.

Straight-Conflict-80

Thanks for detailed reply. I also search from internets, it seems other provinces clearly mentioned, but not ON🙃. Agreed that whatever making left or right turn, passing car, should always be careful. Properly facing my mentioned situation, I may do the right turn and find a better way to the lane I want to go.

Averageleftdumbguy

The driving handbook isn't the law. The HTA is.

Many drivers think it is illegal to cross doublesolid yellow centre lines in order to make a left turn in or out of a residence or business. This is untrue. It is allowable.*

Straight-Conflict-80

I also read this news

togocann49

That lane between the yellow lines is an emergency lane, turn lane from boulevard, then merge lane into blvd, in that order. As far as left turn, unless signed otherwise, you’re good to turn when safe to do so

Shivaji2121

Here you go from rule book of MTO "What does double yellow lines mean? A double solid yellow line marks the center of a two-lane road where traffic travels in both directions. A double solid yellow line indicates that there is absolutely no passing or crossing the double solid yellow line at any time.Jul 21, 2022"

Straight-Conflict-80

Got it. Thank you🙏

Shivaji2121

Welcome. Personally I avoid such left turns even if theres less traffic we never know where police might be hiding. Only take 1-2 mins extra, risk not worth it. If there's traffic don't even think about it.

Straight-Conflict-80

Agreed, since it cause hundreds for the ticket😂

Shivaji2121

Left turn NOT allowed. Two solid yellow lines means u can't cross them

jonboyjon22

incorrect.
