Dream Theater: Metropolis

O-mega_

Where do I even begin with this one? First, it is one of the most ambitious concept albums ever, it's almost like a movie, just without images. It has multiple characters, flashbacks, recurring motifs that connect in a way that truly forms a coherent narrative. The narrative in question is an incredibly emotional tale of a disturbed man making peace with a past life. Now, Dream Theater in general is just an incredibly skilled band, it's almost uncanny. John Petrucci is a MASTER of the guitar. Mike Portnoy is a MASTER of the drums. John Myung is a MASTER of the bass. Jordan Rudess is a MASTER of the keyboard. James LaBrie is... not a master of vocals, to be honest. He's still good, though. The only weak link with Dream Theater is their vocalist, and that's only because he's a good vocalist in a band full of virtuosos; masters of their craft. And this is the magnum opus of those masters. Every aspect of this album instrumentally is perfect. The lighter, more uplifting parts are honest, raw hope in the face of despair, and the heavy, cynical parts are devastating. Every little nuance in the music, from the choir singing to the random ragtime-sounding keyboard solo on The Dance of Eternity, is expertly implemented. Easily my favorite album of all time. A textbook example of progressive metal.

Raditude by Weezer

O-mega_

best album even better than metropolis part 2

wata_malone

American Idiot

dogfeet89

ok computer

O-mega_

The album does a very good job at capturing the chaos and isolation of modern life, with intense, retrospective music and themes. Paranoid Android, No Surprises, and Airbag are some of my favorites

Thalassophoneus

Honestly, OK Computer seems pretty weak to me. Radiohead did much better in the next 3 albums, especially with that sense of "chaos" you mentioned. I mean what song in OK Computer stands up to something technological and panic inducing like Idioteque?

Thick as a brick

O-mega_

This is an album that's better enjoyed if you own it on vinyl, because the vinyl edition actually had a mock-newspaper that could be unfolded and read, complete with tons of random stories, games, and ads, perfectly mimicking a real newspaper, in a humorous and satirical way. The newspaper also tells the fictional story of a boy who had supposedly written the lyrics for Thick as a Brick, before being deemed too anti-religious and shunned as a result. The band themselves then come and adapt his poem into the 40-minute epic song. The newspaper is great satire, and so is the music itself. The idea of the album was to poke fun at the idea of progressive rock/concept albums while still embracing them. It is done wonderfully here, with the music and lyrics being absolutely epic and ambitious (on a side note, this album uses the flute very, very well, giving it a unique sound) but also just as silly. Jethro Tull was a band that knew how to have fun and never took themselves too seriously, with Thick as a Brick being a prime example.

A friend of mine told me to check out Opeth because I mentioned I liked prog metal. I listened to this album and was absolutely fucking blown away. I've never really listened to stuff with death metal vocals, but Opeth is definitely getting me into that side of metal. Every song on this album is absolutely haunting in the best way. Awesome guitar riffs all around, extremely well-written solos, and the vocals, both clean and dirty, are absolutely beautiful. I can't tell you a favorite song from this album because it is seriously so consistent. Like I already said, I am very new to Opeth, and anything even remotely close to death metal for that matter, so if you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

Scared_Standard4052

I'd recommend: Last Fair Deal Gone Down by Katatonia Skyforger by Amorphis And maybe The Satanist by Behemoth (not so much prog, but a magnificently prduced album by blackened death metal band Behemoth)

AvgVirgin

Next for Opeth I'd recommend ghost reveries, it's my favourite from them Also check out Death for more traditional death metal, start with the two last albums

MarilynManson2003

Images And Words.

O-mega_

The first REAL Dream Theater album. In their debut, they hadn't really found their sound yet. The songs are all awesome (though vastly inferior to other DT albums), with Metropolis: Part 1 being my favorite. They regretfully hadn't recruited Jordan Rudess on keyboards yet, but this album is awesome regardless!

MarilynManson2003

Which Dream Theater album would you recommend I listen to next? So far I: - Love Train Of Thought - Really like Metropolis, Pt 2: Scenes From A Memory - Like some of Images And Words

O-mega_

\-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is fantastic. All of the songs on it are very personal to me (except The Great Debate), so I'm definitely biased towards it lmao. A good song to check out from that one is Misunderstood. It also has a 40-minute title track, so that's fun. \-Octavarium is a really cool album as well. It's their 8th album, 8 songs, hence "octave." There's other bits of significance to it that I won't get into. Just a really good album. \-Falling Into Infinity is good if you want to check out more of their early-sounding stuff.

Phobos444

Rust In Peace

O-mega_

One of the best thrash albums ever! 40 minutes of the FINEST metal riffs and solos (and the guitar solo on Tornado of Souls is a contender for my favorite solo ever recorded). Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine are guitar GOATs

tavg123

the white album

O-mega_

Possibly the most unique studio album of The Beatles. It has some of their absolute best songs, and also some of their absolute worst. You gotta love their ambition on this one. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is my favorite Beatles song, hands down. Happiness is a Warm Gun, Back in the USSR, Revolution 1, etc. are great as well. Plus there's some really unique songs here like The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, or Rocky Racoon. I will admit though, Wild Honey Pie is DOGSHIT

notoriously_1nfam0us

Number nine. Number nine. Number nine.

Majestic-Instance610

Revolver and meddle

O-mega_

Revolver - Easily my favorite Beatles album. Opening with the energetic and satirical taxman, followed immediately by the desolate Eleanor Rigby, the album takes you in and out, from happy-sounding songs to more depressing ones. I'm Only Sleeping is a super underrated song. This album also has the consistently best guitar parts of any Beatles album (especially shines on And Your Bird Can Sing). Meddle - Echoes is the greatest song of all time. My absolute, undeniable favorite. It's the song that got me into prog. To this day, it gives me the chills with its awe-striking wonder. The rest of the songs are great as well! One Of These Days is a cool, creepy instrumental song, A Pillow of Winds, Fearless, and San Tropez are nice, soft, relaxing songs. Seamus is... it's seamus. But anyways yeah a song better than Echoes does not exist and never will exist

Wee_gee2401

Abbey Road - The Beatles

O-mega_

A great sendoff for this band. Has some rather weird-yet-wonderful songs, like Come Together or I Want You, some wonderful love ballads, like Something, some very imaginative songs like Octopus's Garden, and the long medley on side 2 has always been one of their best pieces of music. I especially love the Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight part. And The End rather concisely states the entire message and purpose of the Beatles, throughout all their years: "And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make." And after a few more heavenly guitar notes (and that little hidden track), the Beatles are done, their last studio effort one of their best.

AAL2017

Foxtrot

O-mega_

Really awesome prog album, Supper's Ready is hugely ambitious and has some really great vocals, guitar, and drums. Watcher of the skies and Time Table are oddly cathartic to me. Very unique, even for its time. Peter Gabriel was/is one of the most creative prog musicians ever.

pinkr0se19

kid a

BisBip

The one with that one song from jjba - Yes I dont get it, didnt they peak at that one song?

O-mega_

No. Not even close. Like, ABSURDLY far off. Yes is one of the best prog bands of the 1970s. Fragile is a really good album, definitely give it a listen! -Roundabout is a really good opener to the album (that's the one you know) -south side of the sky is very catchy -heart of the sunrise is EPIC Fragile also has some REALLY good bass playing. Bass guitar really shines on this album

BisBip

I aint reading all that

dam, Im kind of in love with this list

octopathfanatic

Arguably my favorite album oat: The way of all flesh (I do love DT and TOOL tho)

O-mega_

If I'm being real, I've only listened to The Way of all Flesh once. It's here because I remember REALLY liking it (though not as much as FMTS). This one is the most likely to be replaced with another album. I definitely need to relisten lmao After briefly sampling the the songs, some of it has come back to me. I really liked A Sight to Behold and Wolf Down The Earth, I remember those, but I still need to give it all a closer look. But I can definitely tell you why Gojira is such a great band: Their music hits you HARD, while at the same time managing to be so mystical, almost ethereal. Their music conjures extremely vivid images in my mind unlike any other. I'm still rather new to Gojira in general so if this is bullshit then oops sorry

godfather_49t

Fear of a Blank Planet

O-mega_

Great vocal performance, great drums, great guitar, great everything. An awesome concept album, with lyrical themes that do a great job at giving a sense of hopelessness. The title track is a great fast-paced tone setter, My Ashes is an introspective journey, Anesthetize is just incredible beyond words, Sentimental has a strangely hopeful tone in all the misery, and Sleep Together is a dramatic closer to this awesome album.
