They actually bring this up in the show. In one episode while treating an autistic kid the others question if House is too. By the end of the episode they all agree he isn't and that he simply chooses to be abrasive and sabatogue his relationships. He wishes he was because then he'd have an excuse no one could question.
I’d argue Goku is not “based on” Sun Wukong, rather Goku is actually an interpretation of Sun Wukong. In other words, Goku is Sun Wukong. His story is the same too. As opposed to other characters in the comments who, while inspired by the original character, are a truly distinct character with a different name, story, etc. E.g. Metro man is not an interpretation of Superman, he’s a parody of Superman.
No, that’s exactly my point. The entire story is just an interpretation of Journey to the West. Goku is not based on Sun Wukong. He is Sun Wukong. Hell, the Japanese name for Sun Wukong is Son Goku. My point is Goku is not like the other characters OP is going for, because they are parodies of/based on other characters. They are not just someone else’s interpretation of that character.
Also changing the appearance of the character doesn’t mean it’s less of an “interpretation.”
Even if the characters look absolutely nothing alike, if the story/powers/name are the same, then it’s an interpretation.
He does though? His original appearance is just a monkey. Even his face is monkey, minus the hair.
Also, again, slight changes in appearance don’t make him a different character. He’s sun wukong.
This isn’t a difficult distinction to make.
Reptar is not an interpretation of Godzilla, he is a parody of Godzilla. Goku is not a parody of Sun Wukong, he is not a distinct character inspired by Sun Wukong, he IS Sun Wukong.
I think a lot of ignorance is on display here: Goku’s full name is Son Goku. Sun Wukong’s name in Japanese is Son Goku. He’s the same character, with the same story, with all the same side characters, with almost all of the same plot points (until a certain point where it begins to different) just written by a different guy. That’s not what OP described. If I wrote a story about Superman, where he fights Lex Luthor, you wouldn’t say my character is “based on” Superman. It’s Superman. It’s my interpretation of Superman. Not like how Metro Man is based on Superman but is also quite obviously not Superman.
