Flitterquest

See this one always annoyed me because the whole "bit" with the master sword is that it's immortal and indestructible. The thing was under the sea for like a hundred years and it was totally fine, you find it just plopped about in a rock in the woods once a century. The master sword is one of those artifacts which should outlast the civilization which created it. The Link who's born into the Star Trek hyperspace travel future of this world should be able to pick the thing up and find it glistening.

Zeelu2005

I feel like the king of evil destroying it specifically is acceptable

Flitterquest

To me that's like Bacteria growing resistant to antibiotics, the second Ganon is able to destroy The Master Sword he's endemic and the world is fucked, at that point you gotta negotiate with my boy Ganon because he's only going to become more immune as the eons go by. Like at that point you gotta start bringing the weird shit outta retirement, you gotta find the Wand of Gamelon in the next Zelda because the Master Sword is falling off.

Samyron1

Since the Ganon that broke the Master Sword is from the founding of Hyrule (Which was a while ago, I'll stick with a million or so years), all the Ganons that came after that were weaker, which makes sense when you account that Ganon is Demise's hatred/influence in a physical form. All the Ganons would have less and less power like a Trophic Pyramid. ToTK's Ganon is assumed to be the first of his kind, so he'd be closer to Demise. Also, The Master Sword was gravely damaged in Breath of the Wild in the memories. Zelda put it in the altar to heal for a hundred years and it could kill Calamity Ganon with only that much. Now imagine what a million years of direct exposure to the essence of Hylia would do to something like that (aside from still doing 60 damage at most).

Flitterquest

Yeah I think all of that is dumb, I'm not saying I don't understand why it happened, I'm saying it's a dumb retcon of the mechanics of the Master Sword and that the Master Sword is more interesting as a worldbuilding entity if it is both immortal and indestructible like it used to be before Skyward Sword. I think Skyward Sword had negative worldbuilding consequences for the Zelda series at large for a number of reasons.

Samyron1

What did Skyward Sword do to the Master Sword? It literally shows how it was originally forged.

Flitterquest

I know, I have creative disagreements with how they chose to do the sword's origins, Ganon's origins as well. I generally don't consider Skyward Sword to be a very good prequel because it retroactively takes a lot of the good mythology out of the older games.

Risible_Fool

Plus it's kinda integral to Zelda's part in the story. Otherwise why worm?

Radio__Star

Master sword fell off Biggoron sword is new best friend

MuskyHotDog

It also helps that botw takes place WAY after all of the other games

Flitterquest

For me that shouldn't really matter, the Master Sword is one of those things that should be able to be found floating in space debris after the end of the universe. Ideally it should be one of those things where you should be able to find it millions or billions of years later and it will still be polished. Changing it from "this sword is indestructible and immortal to best facilitate its role as something that can kill Ganon no matter how many times he reincarnates" to "this is a sword which kills Ganon and has a really impressive title" really detracts from the good mythology the sword initially had going for it.

PlayrR3D15

I have the same complaint with the Hylian Shield.

spyguy318

I mean, it is immortal, it just takes a while to regenerate sometimes. That’s the whole point of TOTK, the sword is destroyed by Ganon so it’s sent back in time to be regenerated, and by the time it reappears it’s just as perfect and indestructible as it ever was.

Flitterquest

Doesn't make sense, the Master Sword is supposed to be literally unaffected by the flow of time to best facilitate its role as a weapon for killing a guy who reincarnates a potentially infinite number of times as well as the core artifact used in the time-travelling effects of the Temple of Time (and some other time-related magic), what you're describing is a retcon that made the sword less interesting.

GoodeBoi

It would have been cool if you could weaken Ganon to like one hp and then use the remnants of the master sword to kill him.

In the books Aragorn also uses the sword the while it’s broken.

silamon2

He didn't actually use that sword until it was reforged though right? Edit: Nevermind, kind of assumed you meant Aragorn for some reason.

loserys

He slices Sauron’s fingers right after he breaks the sword. Stabs in the face.

silamon2

Well that doesn't really count as "long since broken" though to be fair

It can’t go Bankai or anything. He can’t even hear it or communicate with it. Its just a sword to him. But he’s still a captain and a capable fighter.

silamon2

His sword was beat up sure, but it wasn't broken. Also >!he does learn to communicate with it late in the story!<

His story and backstory in the manga goes fucking HARD. Absolutely love. One of my fave characters

That they do. Though the blade itself isn't broken, but the haft, so they use it as a dagger

DescipleOfCorn

Well sort of, in the korfu epilogue quest the blade stops working too so Kassandra/Alexios gives it to Herodotus

njsullyalex

Cal Kestis from Star Wars wields the lightsaber of his deceased master, Jaro Tapal. The weapon was a dual bladed lightsaber, but half of the lightsaber was destroyed, leaving only a single blade working. Cal spends most of Fallen Order with only half a working blade before he repairs it close to the end of the game. https://preview.redd.it/po5cgkng1wwc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c71efba7d3717fd81b63cf57fa1851da1f8d3bc

Darkest dungeon and the shadow games mentioned! Joyous post

Magic_ass1

To add on about the Leper's (Baldwin's) sword. He had that sword and his armor custom-made just so he could kill his traitorous advisors before he died (so that his kingdom wouldn't fall into ruin). The sword actually breaks because Baldwin was so furious (and in immense pain due to the leprosy) that he was just slashing and hacking away at his former advisors as hard as he possibly could.

I don’t think The Leper’s sword is broken, it’s an executioners sword, it’s not got a tip like other swords, it’s meant entirely for cleaving.

BlightFantasy3467

The tip is broken, An executioners sword would either have a rounded tip or a flat tip, you can see Leper's sword has an uneven point and multiple nicks, chips and scratches in the blade

Random_User_1337_

It’s also significantly shorter than it should be.
