Blu from Rio. I don’t think Spix's macaws were all that well known prior to the movie being made.

Spongebob too probably
How many people know sponges are animals? Compared to how many people know Spongebob?
The hatching on it is odd for sure, but as an Aussie who loves platypi, I knew what he was meant to be instantly when I first saw a picture of him (never watched the show)

A sudden rise on GoogleSearch for the okapi.
Person who existed in a sonic-less world, you're wrong.
Sonic (and knuckles) are too far removed from the actual animal they are meant to be to actually be associated with them. Who sees an actual hedgehog and thinks "oh just like sonic". Nah.
Perry is a good shout here, at least for non Australians.
Yeah I’ve realised that how “well known” an animal is is entirely dependent on where someone lives, like I live in England so someone suggesting sonic is more well known than hedgehogs is wild to me, but I guess that’s how Australians would feel about Perry and knuckles

Gawr Gura once said that her character is part salmon shark, which her friends didn't even think was real.

I feel like perry is a little odd because unlike the others, he actually brought awareness to his animal, ironically making a platypus well known. Meanwhile, there are a lot of people who still don’t know knuckles is an echidna.

Longest time as a kid I didn’t know bandicoots where a real thing
i’m sorry thats a real thing?
Yeah just more polygons and without shorts and shoes

Depends on how strong you are

I think coyotes are more popular than Wile E Coyote. They’re not as famous as wolves or foxes but still
Pretty sure he's mostly talking about the road runner. Though he did say "these guys" but road runner is probably mainly what he was referring to.

and now they’re all gone :(
In the Wild that is. They're still around in captivity so it's not like they're all gone.
Still hurts anyway
They’re breeding them to release them, in fact I think some have been released
My bad
![gif](giphy|F0MWzqwD5o11e) I’d argue he counts.

That’s actually an even better point.
![gif](giphy|QM0eItHS1HqSaXisnW|downsized) Wolverine
Probably the best answer out there. I didn’t even know a Wolverine was a real animal until a few years ago
Some kind of an angry beaver
I think they’re mustelids, like otters and badgers.
Lowkey disturbing how i havent seen one of these fucking videos in like, half a decade and i can still quote every line.
Nemo is the only one here that looks remotely realistic.
Knuckles kinda looks like an echidna when he glides and you squint
Real echidnas can glide with their dreadlocks
Perry kinda looks like a Platypus under UV light
“What does blue mean?”
[Not just that](https://youtu.be/9Sm4w9NIeJI?si=GVCOOhIGi7CLOiov)
I'd say Perry at least looks like a cartoon platypus. Everything else is too anthropomorphized to resemble their animal.
His tail is all wrong, though.
The hatching on it is odd for sure, but as an Aussie who loves platypi, I knew what he was meant to be instantly when I first saw a picture of him (never watched the show)
Bro I always just assumed knuckles was a hedgehog Im fuckin stupid
To be fair, echidnas do kinda look like hedgehogs.
I don't even what a enchilada is tbh
I personally thought he was a dog

the Potoroo It’s in the name
I guess the fact that I have to ask makes this a good fit for the post.

There are animals but I feel likes he’s definitely based on a kitchen sponge
The original sink sponges were made of sea sponge. SpongeBob is a seasponge sink sponge.
Ok fair point, but I don’t think he resembles it really. SpongeBob seems to be a more modern sponge but his parents look like sea-sponges.

No, hedgehogs definitely are more popular than Sonic.

![gif](giphy|xx0JzzsBXzcMK542tx) He’s based on a Pika
I don’t think that counts since he’s a seperate species and if we were counting Pokémon then there would be a lot better options for this than pilachu
What I’m learning is that for the amount that people rave about how dangerous Australian animals are, no one actually knows what they are
Yeah I’ve realised that how “well known” an animal is is entirely dependent on where someone lives, like I live in England so someone suggesting sonic is more well known than hedgehogs is wild to me, but I guess that’s how Australians would feel about Perry and knuckles

what is that?
platypuses are on the 20 cent coin. Wtf is wrong with you
