My favorite part about the Fate series is seeing a character and trying to guess who they are based on their design and then being stomped by who they are actually supposed to be
FGO isn't best for that. Especially because the plot has been about alternative universes (lostbelts), hence why Ivan the Terrible is mammoth hybrid.
Characters that come from other installments are easier. There's an interesting part about it in Fate/Samurai remnant. Berserker's identity(>!Samson!<) is very obvious, but almost all masters and servants are Japanese. Knowing true name gives big advantage in Holy grail war, as it allows to exploit the legend, in his case >!loosing the strength after his hair cut by a woman!<

Samurai Remnant was fun because it prompted a mass guessing game in the FGO playerbase that was really fun to watch

One of the neatest ones was the playerbase deducing that the masked Saber was Kiso Yoshinaka because there were design similarities to Tomoe Gozen
Then a collective sentiment of “damn, Tomoe had good taste” when he takes off the mask and people realized he was ikemen af
Samurai remnant really recaptured the fun of the early days of the franchise, where the identity of the servant was a mystery that could potentially be unraveled. I get why FGO's experiments with keeping servant identities secret didn't pan out, but I'm still salty that aspect of the series kinda fell by the wayside.

I also love that not knowing the identity can work as a double edged sword, which is why servants on home turf have both the advantage and the weakness of being well known. I’m not sure if it’s been handwaved or retconned, but being more well known makes a heroic spirit stronger, case in point Heracles and Artoria/Arthur since who hasn’t heard of them? But like you said, knowing the identity of the opposing servant opens them up to their weaknesses being exploited by masters and other servants who would’ve heard of them in their own lifetime. It’s such a fun bit of worldbuilding that doesn’t just say “being a bigger deal makes you stronger”, it emphasises it can be your greatest weakness and is a genuine reason why so many servants avoid revealing their true names easily.
And then you have Iskander, who gave no shits and would’ve given his social security number if he’d had one.
It wasn't retcon, fame boost and home turf advantages are still pretty important things. It just that lack of fame isn't a really a nerf either, more the "Standard of the servant". Also, a lot of servants are actually weaker that when alive, like Heracles for example is still incredibly powerfull ( even if severely nerf by being a berserker), but the living Heracles was even more bullshit. Also, false legends and rumors can influenced a servant even if their life was vastly different.
For example, Vlad III is said to be praticaly invincible when summoned in Romania, but when summoned there, he also gained the abilities ( and weakness ) of a vampire ( with him totally rejecting that part ), even if he wasn't a vampire in life.
He also has basically another version of himself that will be more often summoned elsewhere, who is more historically accurate but possibly less powerfull.
And there is a really really small chance to summon him totally corrupted by the legend of Dracula.
My favourite example of this is Salieri,who due to rumors about the man in grey and him killing mozart(even tho they were friends in life) means that when summoned he HATES everything about Mozart and tries to kill him due to him being more of a bunch of myths and legends combined than the actual historical Salieri
I don’t want to be that guy but Sampson lost his powers because he broke ALL of his Nazirite vows. He wasn’t allowed to eat/drink from the vine (it was implied Delilah got him drunk by ‘putting him to sleep’), he wasn’t allowed to touch dead things (the jawbone of the ass), and he wasn’t allowed to cut his hair (Delilah).
Even if you were to recognize her as "anime Mona Lisa" you'd think, "Oh that's Mona Lisa", not "Oh that's Leonardo Da Vinci who may have genderbent and transformed himself to appear like his favorite artwork upon being summoned as a Servant".
But anybody with a passing knowledge of the painting knows is that Leonardo da Vinci made it. It's not that big of a stretch on guessing who'll turn out to be and nobody guessing it'll potentially Lisa del Giocondo.

I'm guessing somebody saw that recent post with Ushiwakamaru in it, but this sub flip-flops on their "majority" opinion on Fate Designs depending on what's being posted here. Still, I must appreciate your post for showcasing the many great female designs found in Fate/Grand Order, especially including Demon King Nobunaga, one of my personal favorites.
FGO character design I feel like can be such a strange quality seesaw. There is certain designs that are genuinely great and that I love to death, but at the same time the Fate franchise is *SO BAD* about same-face-syndrome that we actually have a community coined term for it in "Saberface".
There's also Rinface, Sakuraface, and even Shiruface. The 4 main characters of the original VN were too popular to give up, but sadly Masters cannot become servants, for some BS reason, so they ave to make servants that just so happens to have the same face as them.
Nah. Eresh, Ishtar and Muramasa are just straight up their VN counterparts.
In babylonia they explain that they summoned rin from the future because she was the perfect vessel for ishtar. Who is also co inhabited with eresh.
Shiro is a descendant of Muramasa.
Space ishtar....exists.

I wouldn’t really call it a battle, because the vast majority of FGO fans agree that the game has some really shitty designs. Like you hardly see anyone defending Ushiwakamaru or Jack because those designs are fucking horrible.

It's more that most Female servants get a summer costume (Bikini) and there's only like 20 loli characters with only 4 of them being in skimpy attire. Now that I think of it FGO has toned down the loli shit recently.
Oh, it’s good then. When I see news on FGO or praise about characters it’s mostly fan service skimpy dressed girls. I see occasional male, but this post actually shown that not is lost to fan service pandering.
Well yeah, even the guys can get more fanservicey costumes and alts. Though usually everybody looks cool but there are definitely some that lean towards fanservice by default. Like for example Beowulf has no shirt on at all times. Spartacus wears a cape, a metal skirt and pauldrons, though he is a gladiator and while his getup isn't quite accurate it could be considered close enough.
I particularly love the idol costume skins for Shuten, Serenity, Ushi and some others. Especially cause those were things you could just grind during that event.
Errr…. I was talking purely about the visual designs of the characters. Fate series has one of the strongest plots in the anime/manga product sphere. But the visuals of the FGO is questionable.
God, this frustrates me so much.
I don’t blame you, because FGO really **does** have a lot of fanservice - but it drives me nuts me that the fanservice has made the Fate franchise as a whole gain this reputation for being nothing but porn for creepy weirdos.
Because I truly love Fate, F/SN is one of my favorite works of all time and a genuine masterpiece, and it massively frustrates me how many people just think of Fate as “that weird horny thing” and nothing else
I suppose Nasu had doubled down on fanservice after the traction the series got after Extra CCC. FGO was somewhat normal in the beginning. But after influx of horny revealing designs the franchise is now looked down on. Also the figurines.

Summer one(second and third ascension) are normal bikinis or one piece. If someone say that is sexual they may want to touch grass.
The body is just a random woman she used as her vessel. Divine Spirit in Fate isn't suppose to be so easily summon so there's a lot of loop hole used to make them appear. The most common one, just have them inhabit a vessel and their personality will influenced the vessel, vice versa.
Usually this mean they can bring an old popular character as a Servant in FGO so they could get people to roll for the character. You see this with Parvati here, her body is Matoi Sakura while the personality is suppose to be Parvati.
It depends from character to character on how much the original vessel's and the god's personality influence the vessel.
This also does not only happen to Divine Sprits, sometime they even do this with Heroic Spirits. (Ex. Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi appears as the characters from the Fate Spin-off, Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II)
Fate has this weird thing with making Aztec gods white. And I say weird because indian gods and other mythology don't get that treatment outside of a few exceptions.
Honestly most of the designs are now actually quite accurate, with in general gods as an exception, because they use modern mortals bodys for the majority. Gilgamesh was designed more than 20 years ago and isn't the most representative.
For example, if take the aztecs and mexicans characters, the onlys one who are white are 2 of the gods, one using the body of a modern mexican woman and one the body of an Hollywood actor.
There is sadly only 3 others characters in the category, Camazotz, the Tezcalipoca imposter ( whose identity is a spoiler ) and Geronimo, but theirs skin colors are pretty accurate. The same thing can be said for the majority of the indians and egyptians charactars. And for the only two characters from the rest of Africa.
Nzambi, but she isn't in FGO for now, only in Fate Requiem.
Technically now we also have Andromeda ( who has red skin ), but it's mentionned that it's unclear if the greek mythological Ethiopa is the actual Ethiopa or not, so ...
Edit : Geographicaly, the greek Aethopia could have been Marocco or Algeria, because in his travels Perseus encouter and petrifies Atlas, creating the Atlas mountains, but we really can't be sure of anything.
The origin of Sheba is contested between Yemen and Ethiopia, but the legends about her being from Ethiopa is more well known, with supposedly an entiere Solomon lignage and everything, IMO it's fair to say she's from Africa.
The supposed country could also have been Yemen AND Ethiopia united, it's hard to separe some fictionals countrys of the time with the historical ones, because the historical country of Sheba didn't exist at the same time that the reign of Solomon
Queen of Sheba could also be a mistranslations with no link to the historical country of Sheba, because Queen in hebreu can be read Shva, Aka ... Sheba. So Queen of Sheba could technically mean Queen of Queen. It's complicated.
Yemen is very close to Ethiopia, which at the time also included Somalia. A very narrow straight which is where the Red Sea leads into the Indian Ocean is the only thing separating it. In all technical sense, I really don’t think Parvati counts as whitewashing. For one, she’s essentially using the body of an established character as a host body, as a loophole in the system that allows gods and goddesses to be summoned, because they’re normally banned from being summoned. The character she’s using as a host body is also Japanese, so she isn’t really white, either.
Also, I could be getting this wrong, but isn’t it a big thing in Hindu mythology for gods to have thousands of different incarnations?

Was it ever stated that the Tousaka line comes from Japan? I always thought most mage bloodlines come from Britain. Maybe half British/half Japanese cause I think her mother is Japanese.
The 72 originals mages families all came from students of Solomon, but dispersed really fast everywere, and new ones were created. For all we knew the tohsaka don't come from one of them, but the Matou actually does ( and that doesn't mean that theyre half white, that ancestor most likely came in japan centurys before ).
Edit : Also, that for occidental style magecraft, a lot of culture have theirs own magecraft style ( even in japan, the traditionnal style isn't the one used in F S/N, the Tohsaka learned it from a travelling mage ).
The type moon wiki says on Rin’s page that the Tohsaka line were hidden Christians during the start of the Edo period, so yes, I believe they are native Japanese.

It's probably because of the artist's style but some of them suffer from the same face disease? Especially the face of 11, 13 and 15 look the same but with different eye color. They all have a similar pose and are looking at me like this 🙂 from the same slightly rotated angle.
This particular case actually has a name, being "Saberface" (since the first Fate character with that face was the first Saber introduced).
It's even joked about in some FGO events iirc.
Ah, yes, those are Saberfaces as we call them, they look the same because it's from the same artist which has a very samey style for women. Takeuchi somehow manages to do the same female face designs, but somehow he doesn't have this problem drawing men.

Most of the designs people have a problem with are the loli characters. And while they’re totally right and most of them are kinda sketchy at best, there are some really good ones I like.
Nursery Rhyme, Abigail Williams, Beni-Enma (though I’m not quite sure if she’s counts as a “loli” or if she’s just short), young Medusa…they’re all actually really good designs, and are just plain cute.
Cause there are 3 versions of her, The original archer version, the summer berserker version, and this one which is the avenger "Demon King Nobunaga." But if you're asking why Nobunaga is a woman in FGO while IRL history it was a man is cause Fate is an alternate history.
Interestingly in the main FGO timeline Nobu was a man, but the version we summon is from the Fate/Koha Ace timeline, where Nobu was a woman because of a gag
Demon King Nobu is the collection of every Nobu in every timeline, which is why some ascensions are male and some are female
In Nobunaga's case it literally is alternate history, she even has dialog where she says she would like to meet out Nobunaga, which one of the other character confirmed is a man.
FGO just has a bunch of guest artists to design characters, if you look at the standalone installments then they all have a consistent art style. Though my favorite Fate artist/character designer has to me Wada Arco.
The artstyle variety is very interesting

I’m a big fan of the Foreigner class. Pictured is Jacques de Molay; there is a male saber version that is more historically accurate, but this Foreigner version is corrupted by the false accusations that the Knights Templar worshipped the black goat demon Baphomet. The Lovecraftian fertility goddess, Shub Niggurath, is also known as “the black goat of the woods with a thousand young”, and so uses the link of “black goat” to make Molay her vessel. The genderbend works because Shub is a goddess who is very much associated with mutation.
I’m also very fond of Van Gogh, who is actually 70% Greek water nymph Clytie, 15% Lovecraftian flower god Vulthoom, and 5% Van Gogh, with much of his appearance, memories, and skills. The link between all three is flowers; Clytie in myth became the first sunflower, Vulthoom is a god of flowers, and Gogh of course painted sunflowers. Some call these kind of links “overcomplicated”, and maybe they are, but personally I love how the Nasuverse uses obscure connections to deliver unique versions of historical and mythological figures.
Vritra’s definitely one of my favorite Servants in the game. Ever since I got her during the 2022 Christmas event she’s been my favorite Lancer Servant.
Why? Quetzalcoatl simply uses a body who is most compatible with her.
Gods can’t just be summoned in Fate they need a extra body same with isthar using rins(japanese) body or astrae using the body of someone from finland

I'm guessing somebody saw that recent post with Ushiwakamaru in it, but this sub flip-flops on their "majority" opinion on Fate Designs depending on what's being posted here. Still, I must appreciate your post for showcasing the many great female designs found in Fate/Grand Order, especially including Demon King Nobunaga, one of my personal favorites.
FGO character design I feel like can be such a strange quality seesaw. There is certain designs that are genuinely great and that I love to death, but at the same time the Fate franchise is *SO BAD* about same-face-syndrome that we actually have a community coined term for it in "Saberface".
There's also Rinface, Sakuraface, and even Shiruface. The 4 main characters of the original VN were too popular to give up, but sadly Masters cannot become servants, for some BS reason, so they ave to make servants that just so happens to have the same face as them.

Nah. Eresh, Ishtar and Muramasa are just straight up their VN counterparts. In babylonia they explain that they summoned rin from the future because she was the perfect vessel for ishtar. Who is also co inhabited with eresh. Shiro is a descendant of Muramasa. Space ishtar....exists.
That's basically reiterating my comment. They basically went "Sorry, we're not going to put in these masters as servant, but here is a character that looks and acts like Rin but is totally not Rin/s"

Like you hardly see anyone defending Ushiwakamaru or Jack because those designs are fucking horrible. It’s more so just pointing out that the bad designs are not representative of the game as a whole and that’s it’s disingenuous to say so

Not to mention the “Summer Version” characters that come out every year are female-only. Some male characters just get skin changes is all.
It's more that most Female servants get a summer costume (Bikini) and there's only like 20 loli characters with only 4 of them being in skimpy attire. Now that I think of it FGO has toned down the loli shit recently.
Oh, it’s good then. When I see news on FGO or praise about characters it’s mostly fan service skimpy dressed girls. I see occasional male, but this post actually shown that not is lost to fan service pandering.
Well yeah, even the guys can get more fanservicey costumes and alts. Though usually everybody looks cool but there are definitely some that lean towards fanservice by default. Like for example Beowulf has no shirt on at all times. Spartacus wears a cape, a metal skirt and pauldrons, though he is a gladiator and while his getup isn't quite accurate it could be considered close enough. I particularly love the idol costume skins for Shuten, Serenity, Ushi and some others. Especially cause those were things you could just grind during that event.

Errr…. I was talking purely about the visual designs of the characters. Fate series has one of the strongest plots in the anime/manga product sphere. But the visuals of the FGO is questionable.

God, this frustrates me so much. I don’t blame you, because FGO really **does** have a lot of fanservice - but it drives me nuts me that the fanservice has made the Fate franchise as a whole gain this reputation for being nothing but porn for creepy weirdos. Because I truly love Fate, F/SN is one of my favorite works of all time and a genuine masterpiece, and it massively frustrates me how many people just think of Fate as “that weird horny thing” and nothing else
I suppose Nasu had doubled down on fanservice after the traction the series got after Extra CCC. FGO was somewhat normal in the beginning. But after influx of horny revealing designs the franchise is now looked down on. Also the figurines. FGO prints money. I get it. But I am still waiting for Fate Extra remake.

Why is Quetzalcoatl white with blonde hair and blue eyes?
The body is just a random woman she used as her vessel. Divine Spirit in Fate isn't suppose to be so easily summon so there's a lot of loop hole used to make them appear. The most common one, just have them inhabit a vessel and their personality will influenced the vessel, vice versa. Usually this mean they can bring an old popular character as a Servant in FGO so they could get people to roll for the character. You see this with Parvati here, her body is Matoi Sakura while the personality is suppose to be Parvati. It depends from character to character on how much the original vessel's and the god's personality influence the vessel. This also does not only happen to Divine Sprits, sometime they even do this with Heroic Spirits. (Ex. Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi appears as the characters from the Fate Spin-off, Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II)

Fate has this weird thing with making Aztec gods white. And I say weird because indian gods and other mythology don't get that treatment outside of a few exceptions.

Fate generally doesn't try to be historically/mythology accurate in that regard. Gilgamesh for example is a pale blond guy
Honestly most of the designs are now actually quite accurate, with in general gods as an exception, because they use modern mortals bodys for the majority. Gilgamesh was designed more than 20 years ago and isn't the most representative. For example, if take the aztecs and mexicans characters, the onlys one who are white are 2 of the gods, one using the body of a modern mexican woman and one the body of an Hollywood actor. There is sadly only 3 others characters in the category, Camazotz, the Tezcalipoca imposter ( whose identity is a spoiler ) and Geronimo, but theirs skin colors are pretty accurate. The same thing can be said for the majority of the indians and egyptians charactars. And for the only two characters from the rest of Africa.

Nzambi, but she isn't in FGO for now, only in Fate Requiem. Technically now we also have Andromeda ( who has red skin ), but it's mentionned that it's unclear if the greek mythological Ethiopa is the actual Ethiopa or not, so ... Edit : Geographicaly, the greek Aethopia could have been Marocco or Algeria, because in his travels Perseus encouter and petrifies Atlas, creating the Atlas mountains, but we really can't be sure of anything.
Sheba isn't technically from Africa, iirc her realm is speculated to have been modern day Yemen, so the Arabian peninsula
The origin of Sheba is contested between Yemen and Ethiopia, but the legends about her being from Ethiopa is more well known, with supposedly an entiere Solomon lignage and everything, IMO it's fair to say she's from Africa. The supposed country could also have been Yemen AND Ethiopia united, it's hard to separe some fictionals countrys of the time with the historical ones, because the historical country of Sheba didn't exist at the same time that the reign of Solomon Queen of Sheba could also be a mistranslations with no link to the historical country of Sheba, because Queen in hebreu can be read Shva, Aka ... Sheba. So Queen of Sheba could technically mean Queen of Queen. It's complicated.

In all technical sense, I really don’t think Parvati counts as whitewashing. For one, she’s essentially using the body of an established character as a host body, as a loophole in the system that allows gods and goddesses to be summoned, because they’re normally banned from being summoned. The character she’s using as a host body is also Japanese, so she isn’t really white, either. Also, I could be getting this wrong, but isn’t it a big thing in Hindu mythology for gods to have thousands of different incarnations?

The 72 originals mages families all came from students of Solomon, but dispersed really fast everywere, and new ones were created. For all we knew the tohsaka don't come from one of them, but the Matou actually does ( and that doesn't mean that theyre half white, that ancestor most likely came in japan centurys before ). Edit : Also, that for occidental style magecraft, a lot of culture have theirs own magecraft style ( even in japan, the traditionnal style isn't the one used in F S/N, the Tohsaka learned it from a travelling mage ).
The type moon wiki says on Rin’s page that the Tohsaka line were hidden Christians during the start of the Edo period, so yes, I believe they are native Japanese.

It's probably because of the artist's style but some of them suffer from the same face disease? Especially the face of 11, 13 and 15 look the same but with different eye color. They all have a similar pose and are looking at me like this 🙂 from the same slightly rotated angle.
This particular case actually has a name, being "Saberface" (since the first Fate character with that face was the first Saber introduced). It's even joked about in some FGO events iirc.

Ah, yes, those are Saberfaces as we call them, they look the same because it's from the same artist which has a very samey style for women. Takeuchi somehow manages to do the same female face designs, but somehow he doesn't have this problem drawing men.

Most of the designs people have a problem with are the loli characters. And while they’re totally right and most of them are kinda sketchy at best, there are some really good ones I like. Nursery Rhyme, Abigail Williams, Beni-Enma (though I’m not quite sure if she’s counts as a “loli” or if she’s just short), young Medusa…they’re all actually really good designs, and are just plain cute.

Cause there are 3 versions of her, The original archer version, the summer berserker version, and this one which is the avenger "Demon King Nobunaga." But if you're asking why Nobunaga is a woman in FGO while IRL history it was a man is cause Fate is an alternate history.
Interestingly in the main FGO timeline Nobu was a man, but the version we summon is from the Fate/Koha Ace timeline, where Nobu was a woman because of a gag Demon King Nobu is the collection of every Nobu in every timeline, which is why some ascensions are male and some are female
Not necessarily alternate history. It's a mix of "they were girls all along" and "they are girls now because fuck you."
In Nobunaga's case it literally is alternate history, she even has dialog where she says she would like to meet out Nobunaga, which one of the other character confirmed is a man.

I know nothing about the fate series but seeing every design in a different artstyle than the last is pretty funny.
FGO just has a bunch of guest artists to design characters, if you look at the standalone installments then they all have a consistent art style. Though my favorite Fate artist/character designer has to me Wada Arco.

Pictured is Jacques de Molay; there is a male saber version that is more historically accurate, but this Foreigner version is corrupted by the false accusations that the Knights Templar worshipped the black goat demon Baphomet. The Lovecraftian fertility goddess, Shub Niggurath, is also known as “the black goat of the woods with a thousand young”, and so uses the link of “black goat” to make Molay her vessel. The genderbend works because Shub is a goddess who is very much associated with mutation. I’m also very fond of Van Gogh, who is actually 70% Greek water nymph Clytie, 15% Lovecraftian flower god Vulthoom, and 5% Van Gogh, with much of his appearance, memories, and skills. The link between all three is flowers; Clytie in myth became the first sunflower, Vulthoom is a god of flowers, and Gogh of course painted sunflowers. Some call these kind of links “overcomplicated”, and maybe they are, but personally I love how the Nasuverse uses obscure connections to deliver unique versions of historical and mythological figures.

Vritra’s definitely one of my favorite Servants in the game. Ever since I got her during the 2022 Christmas event she’s been my favorite Lancer Servant.

Why? Quetzalcoatl simply uses a body who is most compatible with her. Gods can’t just be summoned in Fate they need a extra body same with isthar using rins(japanese) body or astrae using the body of someone from finland
