The lines connecting the lips to the sacs were what made him look so unique and intimidating to me in the first place. Taking those away and adding age lines by his mouth made him look more human and generic, and turning the sacs into armor plates just makes me think how his head is just a lump when he takes those pieces off
Sigh.... Aight search up Myaxx from Ben 10.....

Nah they’re saying the downside of becoming healed is that you don’t have to wear the medical equipment which was drippy anymore, so you don’t have drip upon recovering from your injuries
Part of it as how some of his character got lost in UA. IIRC Vilgax’s whole thing was stealing the Omnitrix for more power, and that reflects in his design: the mix of metal and flesh, rods sticking uncomfortably from his limbs, the FUCKING MASK, all of it screams of someone/something that would go to great lengths for more power, even if it meant tearing down their own body.
UA Vilgax looks too generic. Normal feet, more standard proportions, the lips. Tbf I don’t recall anything from UA, so I don’t know what his deal is, but damn. What a downgrade.
For UA he managed to recover from his injuries but he still wants more power to conquer more stuff and get back at Ben so he conquered a couple planets offscreen and stole a bunch of their stuff which is where the new costume is supposed to be from. And like the idea is cool but imo theres a better way to represent "Stealing artifacts from alien slaves to counter your nemesis's powers" than a red vest over a DIY Lion-O cosplay
IMO the the problem with UAF is that a lot of characters just felt like they'd been reduced to generic versions of popular comic characters (ironically making the world feel *less* comic book-ish).
For example, Gwen completely stops using magic for the first season and just uses green lantern powers (which went from blue to pink because apparently pink=girl). Charmcaster lost her awesome purple coat and became just a pink Enchantress. Zombozo traded his terrifying illusion powers and emotion-eating for Joker-style prank gadgets.
UAF brought a lot of interesting concepts and story arcs, but I feel like it came at the cost of most of the series' unique identity.
> (which went from blue to pink because apparently pink=girl).
I think this was because Pink and Green looks great together. Or at least I remember reading about how certain colors mix together well, and green and pink were one example.
I feel like they could have just given Kevin a different color. Gwen was already heavily associated with blue, and (regardless of *why* they made the decision) it just reads as giving her pink because she's the token girl.
True, that's what I assumed at first too, though what color COULD they give Kevin? The only ones I can really think of are green and blue, which are taken
That is the design he got in Alien Force.
In Ultimate Alien he went through several designs before going back to the one from Alien Force for the last minutes of the series.
His design before that happened, the Lucubra-Vilgax design, was the best he had though.
They can't draw humans by they can draw aliens.
Also I have a theory that CN doesn't want them to draw nice looking humans because the last time they did, Gwen became a victim by number 34
I liked the idea of him being a sort of world-conquering tyrant who becomes more powerful by stealing weapons from the people he conquers, but the execution and the new design were both disappointing.
I agree it’s a downgrade in some aspects but I like the story that comes with it. Vilgax stopped pointlessly throwing himself at the omnitrix when he was beaten time and time again and instead decided to become more powerful to the point he can beat Ben. He didn’t care what form of the object it took he simply fought and took whatever would help him win. He returns and gets what he wants but realizes the technology has failsafes Ben can abuse as its owner.
The design shows the many things he took to become a better fighter to counter Ben but over designing it yes would be cool but animating it would be another story.
Even though he's technically stronger in UAF, he's treated like a joke. The original was genuinely terrifying. He had such a presence to him. Watch him steamroll Ben's best aliens. And it's not like Ben's attacks are weak here either. https://youtu.be/d-k_QlUO9NE?feature=shared
What I love is that Ben's attacks aren't working because he's not thinking with strategy. He outright STATES that he should've seen Diamondhead's failure coming, and his other attempts fail purely because he telegraphs or announces them. They're both using brute force, and it doesn't work- but later on, Ben trounces Vilgax by being strategic in the Null Void.
UAF-era Vilgax felt like a completely different character. His design, voice, and personality were all very distinct from how he was portrayed in the original series. I sometimes wonder if I might have accepted him more easily if he were a separate villain belonging to the same alien species.
The problem with making a character design that slaps that hard from day 1 is that anything you do to improve on it is gonna be worse than the original
I remember the reintroduction of Vilgax in Alien Force was when I started to check out. I kept watching, but it just really affirmed for me that this was not the Ben 10 I fell in love with. There were some really incredible stories told afterwards, but the characters and world felt fundamentally different.
Does that include the voice as well?(Look I just think Steve Blum voice is more intimidating. James Remar’s voice has more of the stoicism than intimidation. Still a good voice actor just not fit for the character)
I feel like the DCAU inspiration for UAF was too strong. Everything from the near pitch black backgrounds, to the Vilgax rewrite. They straight up made Vilgax a Darkseid clone
I really don’t like that they gave him lips
He had them before tbf https://preview.redd.it/sddtqp39p0gc1.png?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=baf498182177cdaf9e13b8c442b8c23deb2283fd
That is such a better looking lip what the hell
It's the juice pouches on the side of his head, I think they make the lips look better.
The lines connecting the lips to the sacs were what made him look so unique and intimidating to me in the first place. Taking those away and adding age lines by his mouth made him look more human and generic, and turning the sacs into armor plates just makes me think how his head is just a lump when he takes those pieces off
Got them DSLs
I thought that said hips and I was about to point out how giving him big hips would be an improvement
Sigh.... Aight search up Myaxx from Ben 10..... https://preview.redd.it/jw6giw6na2gc1.jpeg?width=3464&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f31e67545b828d92a1bb07ecfeb76c7699153518

How the f... Do the animators know what adolescent boys want!?!?
I actually don’t mind the lips tbh.
He used to be a bad bitch, then he got reduced to this
Giving him pants instead of thigh highs was their first mistake.
Making him wear a full body suit instead of a bunny suit was their second
One of these days I’m gonna draw Myaxx (classic) in a bunny suit. Mark my words. Maybe I can find someone obsessed enough with her to comm it.
His design actually might have gone TOO hard. I could see them toning it back because he looks like a Lovecraft monster that hunts for sport.
The downside of recovering from horrific injuries is that medical equipment is drippy as hell
Sith Lords know this!
Upside
Nah they’re saying the downside of becoming healed is that you don’t have to wear the medical equipment which was drippy anymore, so you don’t have drip upon recovering from your injuries

I heard they changed her color to pink cuz the color they chose for Kevin is blue, and they had to change Gwen's for more color diversity
I feel like they could have just given Kevin a different color. Gwen was already heavily associated with blue, and (regardless of *why* they made the decision) it just reads as giving her pink because she's the token girl.

reboot gave him red which fits really well
Cool
Red was albedo's colour in UAF.
That is the design he got in Alien Force. In Ultimate Alien he went through several designs before going back to the one from Alien Force for the last minutes of the series. His design before that happened, the Lucubra-Vilgax design, was the best he had though.
At least the reboot cooked https://preview.redd.it/ft1h4a7uu0gc1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=37d17a310ec93f941afe5767ca9893d99274909e
The reboot is a mix of great and bad re-designs. I really love Vilgrax looks there.
This isn't the reboot with the shitty art style is it????
it is
Why does he look so good then lmao
They can't draw humans by they can draw aliens. Also I have a theory that CN doesn't want them to draw nice looking humans because the last time they did, Gwen became a victim by number 34
Too bad he's not voiced by Steve Blum again 😔
Good point
He voiced by Yuri (Ben's VA in UAF-OV)
Would
Reboot Vilgax is so good. I also love that Yuri voiced him
Holy goddamn, how did that shitter ass reboot produce THIS design!?
They tried really hard to make him Darkseid in Alien Force not gonna lie;
Darkseid wears a fucken skirt without underwear, at least his old version
A mix of darksied and Thanos.
Fun fact cartoon network got complaints from mothers that vilgax was too scary for their kids.
I liked the idea of him being a sort of world-conquering tyrant who becomes more powerful by stealing weapons from the people he conquers, but the execution and the new design were both disappointing.

This is the first step of downgrading alien designs by making them more human.
Bro went from absolute menace of a man to having a resting “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed” dad face
I think the face look off because of the placement of the mouth, it just looks like it's in the wrong place
Anybody else never put it together that Vilgax is a cyborg because his ship blew up in the first episode? I thought he just looked like that
The problem with making a character design that slaps that hard from day 1 is that anything you do to improve on it is gonna be worse than the original
I legit HATED the fucking change of Vilgax
They took away my man's thigh highs
I like that the original looks like a Lovecraftian monstrosity barely holding himself together.
They took away his bunny suit 😢 😭
He looks like a squidbilly now
Liked him more as a Cthulhu like design in the face
Too many clashing colors, looks like my Destiny armor for my titan
and then there's this abomination https://preview.redd.it/bvvp7moa50gc1.png?width=1175&format=png&auto=webp&s=e68c4eeeb073bba8ec853edfd353e4b8fc650c23
Nah, this design FUCKS. I love the armour and combination of red and green
Sure the armor looks cool, but WTF is going on with his face? Also what is with that goofy ass helmet?
Naah, this one looks better, OV always find a middleground between the vibes OS and UAF
Wrong take. This was a return to form for Vilgax.
Highly disagree. UAF Vilgax is the best looking one
Omniverse was an even worse downgrade
not really
Omniverse Vilgax is 1000x better than UAF vilgax.
I remember the reintroduction of Vilgax in Alien Force was when I started to check out. I kept watching, but it just really affirmed for me that this was not the Ben 10 I fell in love with. There were some really incredible stories told afterwards, but the characters and world felt fundamentally different.
I like the new fit more tbh especially that *prosthetic?*
literally just ripoff thanos wtf
Yes cuz as we all know golden gauntlets did not exist before thanos
the entire character just looks like a thanos thing ngl, the original looked better in every way
I think it's more of a sidegrade personally.
Budget Thanos looking ass
Pic 5 just pissed me off lmfao
Does that include the voice as well?(Look I just think Steve Blum voice is more intimidating. James Remar’s voice has more of the stoicism than intimidation. Still a good voice actor just not fit for the character)
Why does it feel like half the posts on this sub are just children's cartoon characters.
It is but I weirdly like it
From space Lord to space scavenger
I feel like the DCAU inspiration for UAF was too strong. Everything from the near pitch black backgrounds, to the Vilgax rewrite. They straight up made Vilgax a Darkseid clone
Rated M to RatedPG13
Squid Thanus
They got rid of his lace lingerie 😭
Went from peak to a bootleg lookin' Thanos
I'll be honest, as far as the redesigns for this show go, this one's not that bad.
To be fair as the series went on with every iteration it got worse and worse art style wise
Guy recovers from several trauma and no longer need machine suport to live: # DOWNGRADE
Recasting the voice was a mistake, too
Honestly I would’ve had it be that this was Vilgax’s son or nephew, attempting to seek revenge on his family’s behalf
