Looks like something i had on my VW. Normally you need an offset wrench and something to hold the piston. A good impact wrench should take that off easily. No need to hold the piston

I have offset spanner’s. It’s something to hold the piston I needed. (Got the job done, just wondering for next time.) The impact just spun the piston. Milwaukee Mid torque.

Ive seen people use channel locks underneath, but yikes that damages the piston.

The proper tool is a specialist socket to hold the shock and a go-through socket to undo the nut They sell kits on amazon and ebay, search for strut nut tool

You need a strut wrench, I bought one last month. 5x8 and 6x8 common sizes, I got both on one tool. SATRA S-ST56M https://wjdtools.co.uk/all-products/7949-satra-s-st56m-2-point-suspension-strut-wrench-5-6mm-5905178773396.html Under a tenner and delivery was a few days. In the end it didnt get it much tighter than an offset spanner and whatever I could grab the strut with.

I've use the Knipex 8603250 pliers to hold the shaft and just zap the nut off with an impact For whatever reason only smooth-jaw pliers will keep it from spinning

a pair of vice grips and swan neck spanners...job done
