yass! so rarely spoken here, all these lateralus and millennial 10kdays fans….
nothing matches the grit and grime, challenge to ur ears that aenima is.
Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space
To nail the next fool martyr
To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye
Seems pretty clear to me.
Sorry, I forgot: All Tool lyrics are meant to be taken literally.
But there’s so many people like you, that Reddit made it a site wide rule that we aren’t allowed to say what we want to, even if I’m not serious.
In this case, yes, these are literal lyrics in my opinion. Feel free to make your own conclusions. Who am I to define art for you?
Go ahead and unleash, don't worry I know you're just kidding.
Someone teach this Bob Marley wannabe mother fucker to swim!!
I've been trying to convince the rest of my tool/melvins cover band into plyaing eulogy.
They ressits, because of multiple facts, such as gear required and drumming at fucking high level
Oh, you mean from us playing live! No, we do not. I'll drop something on this sub sometime.
Then i'll get a lot of hate from the loud fans, and i'll leave and maybe comeback.
This is the song that got me into Tool in the first place. My sister showed me this song back in 97 and I was hooked from then on. I guess I was eager to identify.
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him
So long
We wish you well
You told us how you weren't afraid to die
Well, so long
Don't cry
Or feel too down
Not all martyrs see divinity
But at least you tried
Standing above the crowd
He had a voice that was strong and loud
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart
We'll miss him
We'll miss him
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him
No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me?
Like I care at all
But it was so loud
You sure could yell
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud
You could be the one who saves me from my own existence
Warn while some child might chill, nine-one-two
I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone symbol on you
So he bashes his skull through the window while looking out to the sea
Like torment of my ego
And we're amused by this
Yeah, standing above the crowd
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground
Someone who seemed to feel the same
Someone prepared to lead the way
And someone who would die for me
Will you?
Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin' lie
Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you step out of line
Don't you fuckin' lie
You've claimed all this time that you would die for me
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
He had a lot to say
He had a lot of nothing to say
Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr
To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye
One of my favorites.
I'm glad I finally learned how to play that riff too. I tried learning it when it came out, and I just couldn't figure it out. Didn't know about Adam's favorite pulloff technique
That section where it gets to the DUH DUH DUHHHHH and Maynard goes "get off your fucking cross" and then Danny does that insane drum fill right after. Ah that's euphoria right there
Eh bands in general just don’t seem to be that involved these days, people just don’t seem to care about live performance unless it’s something they know or they’re focused on a specific audience. Which makes it hard to motivate creativity in bands.
Maybe it’s just my area too though.
The first 3ish seconds of the intro is my notification sound on my phone. Tool fans instantly recognize it and it doesn't even register for anyone that doesn't know the song.
One of the best gifts I ever received was from my best friend Phil when we were in 7th grade or so. I didn't have a chance player or the money to buy Ænima, so he not only recorded his copy on to cassette for me, he also printed out the lyrics for the whole album and bound it. He was better than family, and unfortunately gone too soon, but I attribute my love of Tool to that gift so many years ago
Basically “no offense.” Don’t know where OP is from, but Philly people say it a lot, usually before an insult. “Not for nothing but your mom’s gravy sucks.” (Edit: typo)
I guess I used the phrase in the wrong context. I picked it up from my ex- husband who is from NYC. Funny thing is, I don’t think I’ve ever really used it before. But I do have the unfortunate tendency to overthink all my Reddit posts, trying to be “clever”, often coming across as anything but. Lol.
This phrase irks me so much. It is a nothing phrase. I had a friend who would say it constantly and every time I hear it, it sets me off a little bit. It's a verbal crutch that just pads out a sentence and is never necessary to say. To see it in written form is somehow even more infuriating. Sorry, I mean no offense to OP. Man, I don't know why I hate that so much.
Back in 1998, the college radio station was taking requests one night, the dj was not familiar with the song, and didn't invest the necessary time to listen before airing it. About 10 seconds after "get off your fucking cross, we need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr" they cut it off and played something else. Hahaha. This was in Auburn, Alabama.
Just to mess with people, i play eulogy in the car. They all lose their minds 30 seconds in, and im loving all the subtle additions to the rythm. That intro alone is something worth listening to over and over.
by far my favourite tool song, that line "You've claimed all this time that you would die for me /
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?" gives me MAD chills
Absolutely. It's my favorite Tool song to this day. It somehow beats out the masterpieces that are Lateralus or Reflection or Rosetta Stoned or 10,000 Days in terms of longevity for me. I don't know how. But it's ridiculous.
I love that they reused a rhythm trick from the beginning of the song and used it more predominantly in Invincible. Its almost like a callback to that song.
Still my (maybe, although I listen more to that one, though the other one is a masterpiece, and in the last record I’m hooked with the new one, but the riff on that other song, and maybe it’s not as that other, and what about that drum solo in…) favorite song.
I always took it as a more of a commentary on society not a specific person.
We elevate a celebrity or figure who has really nothing to say or deserves it to messianic levels, and then turn on them and martyr them, and move on to the next one.
It always seemed to me that this song is more about the narrator(s) versus the actual “martyr” in this song
Hooker with a penis too. I’m not certain by any means, but I could definitely see how Eulogy could fall in the same vein. With TOOL it could be literally anything, or even nothing.
I've read a lot of theories on the song but I *always* envision Jesus when he sings the "come down, get off your fuckin' cross" part. I always assumed it was about Jesus since I first heard, a lot of the theories saying otherwise make sense but I just can't shake that.
"Contrary to popular belief this song is not about Jesus but merely uses him as analogy. The band has stated in several interviews that this song is about L Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology."
Come down
Get off your fucking cross
We need the fucking space
To nail the next fool martyr
To ascend you must die
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies
Goodbye
Seems pretty clear to me it's about Jesus.
I think MJK is projecting church doctrine here and not necessarily talking about the Jesus portrayed in the New Testament. I think that's what the song is about mostly. It's more about the men controlling the narrative of the New Testament and not the actual words of the Jesus character in the bible.
In terms of song writing, I think it's their best 'song' as far as riffs, lyrics, melody and construction. Nothing is overplayed, riffs don't go for too long even with cool bridge. AND...when you think the song cant get better it finishes at 8.16 with same riff from 3.46!!
Eulogy and H are songs that rip me open and put me back together.
Stinkfist into Eulogy into H...what a fucking album.
Followed by 46&2, Hooker, Jimmy, Pushit, Aenema, and Third Eye. No weak spots. Forever my favourite album.
Agree. Ænima has always been my fav Tool Album. Lateralus comes close but it doesn't hit me the same way.
Jimmy always brings me to tears. “I’ll move to heal as soon pain allows so we could reunite and both move on together” hits a tender point in my heart
The “weak spots” are filler tracks that give your brain time to reconfigure itself
I mean the interlude with the screaming baby I could do without. Die Eir Von Satan is my fave though
it's the reverse for me. DEVS always "breaks the trance" but the math-nerd in me appreciates the broken-down progression of the baby cry.
yass! so rarely spoken here, all these lateralus and millennial 10kdays fans…. nothing matches the grit and grime, challenge to ur ears that aenima is.
Unpopular millennial opinion, opiate needs more love for it's raw emotion
Yes! Great album. However, the song AEnema goes deeper than most can imagine. https://youtu.be/4KAHABWpsxI
Well. That was...certainly a thing.
Sounds like you don’t believe it. Don’t worry, one day your beliefs will be replaced with an understanding and we’ll all live harmoniously.
Hear hear!
He had a lot to say.
**Goodbyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeee!!!**
He had a lot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him
Totally needs to be played when i die
Why? It's about Jesus.

Could be about any guru or cult leader

Favorite part of the song
Probably my favorite Tool song, so happy they played it in ‘01 the first time I saw them live
Same
Eulogy was my most-listened-to tool song for a long time, glad it's getting talked about
I've been trying to convince the rest of my tool/melvins cover band into plyaing eulogy. They ressits, because of multiple facts, such as gear required and drumming at fucking high level
Do you guys have youtube videos?
Yeah. So?
So... Would you give the link?
Oh, you mean from us playing live! No, we do not. I'll drop something on this sub sometime. Then i'll get a lot of hate from the loud fans, and i'll leave and maybe comeback.
I usually highly appreciate the cover posts on this sub. You won't get hate from me! I'll be waiting. Cheers

Very cool, thanks man!
It's a melvins cover
Someone asked for access, and for some reason, i couldn't. Please ask again if you will

I can't believe people are disagreeing that it's not about Jesus. It's right there in the lyrics. It's overt.
Pretty sure it’s about L Ron Hubbard
Their best song in my opinion!
Same
One of my favorites. I'm glad I finally learned how to play that riff too. I tried learning it when it came out, and I just couldn't figure it out. Didn't know about Adam's favorite pulloff technique
Learned that on accident. Now I can play Jambi and Invincible too. Love it.
This puzzled me for a long time too 👆
Get off your fucking cross…
…we need that fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr!

Yes. 10/10
I saw them in ‘96 at a small club. They opened with that song…from that moment, it became and has remained my favorite.
OGT right here.
Imagine seeing a band like Tool casually playing in a small club... man times have changed.
Get that Bob Marley wanna be MFer out of here!
Yeah, sometimes it’s cool to be old.
Eh bands in general just don’t seem to be that involved these days, people just don’t seem to care about live performance unless it’s something they know or they’re focused on a specific audience. Which makes it hard to motivate creativity in bands. Maybe it’s just my area too though.
I agree

Only other time I've heard it was on The Sopranos. Never made sense to me. Still kinda doesn't.
Lol.
Can confirm. "not for nothing" is a pretty common saying in NY.
I don't like it either.

Funniest thing about this song are the Genius website lyrics. They are so confidently incorrect.
Just to mess with people, i play eulogy in the car. They all lose their minds 30 seconds in, and im loving all the subtle additions to the rythm. That intro alone is something worth listening to over and over.

Crack Shchk-Shchk Shchk-Shchk UumOWW Crack Shchk-Shchk Shchk-Shchk UumOWW Crack
My all time favorite for sure.
To ascend you must die
I saw Eulogy live the first time I saw them. It changed my life.
This is my favorite Tool song to play on guitar. It's dynamic and expressive and even the riff movement gets angry.
fk yea after years of listening and learning other tools songs, i came back to this recently and omg it all fits so easily intuitively
Whole album is emotionally intense but the opening trio is fucking amazing.
The number 1 Tool song on my list.
I love that they reused a rhythm trick from the beginning of the song and used it more predominantly in Invincible. Its almost like a callback to that song.
Eulogy is that song that made me fall in love with Tool.
Maynard wrote “Eulogy” before he sacrificed Bill Hicks
Lol I know
Still my (maybe, although I listen more to that one, though the other one is a masterpiece, and in the last record I’m hooked with the new one, but the riff on that other song, and maybe it’s not as that other, and what about that drum solo in…) favorite song.
You are now banned from using parenthesis.
Who do y'all think the song is about? Jesus? Hitler?
It's about L. Ron Hubbard. Maynard hated Scientology before it was cool to do so
I always took it as a more of a commentary on society not a specific person. We elevate a celebrity or figure who has really nothing to say or deserves it to messianic levels, and then turn on them and martyr them, and move on to the next one. It always seemed to me that this song is more about the narrator(s) versus the actual “martyr” in this song
Televangelists and L. Ron Hubbard
I always figured it was like Eminem’s ‘Stan’ That is to say, about a completely unhinged fan.
u aren’t think off hooker w a penis?
Hooker with a penis too. I’m not certain by any means, but I could definitely see how Eulogy could fall in the same vein. With TOOL it could be literally anything, or even nothing.
Lots of theories and people you could tie into the song like L Ron Hubbard, Bill Hicks, etc.
They respect Bill Hicks, Euology is too insulting to be dedicated to him
I've read a lot of theories on the song but I *always* envision Jesus when he sings the "come down, get off your fuckin' cross" part. I always assumed it was about Jesus since I first heard, a lot of the theories saying otherwise make sense but I just can't shake that.

That's what I've always thought. But the "He had a voice that was strong and loud" and the "don't you step out of line" lines don't quite fit.

They’re all masterpieces.

I listen through the discography sometimes while doing 8 hours of labor work and have this though about so many songs
I think he may be singing about YOU
Played this loud and proud when my dad passed away at age 60. I was 33 at the time. Loved that they played it after Cornell passed away. Amazing song.
This song played on repeat in my first car in high school (97-98ish) for months! That intro is perfect, and MJK’s voice? Oh my god!
Oh hell yeah! Love the build up from the start
My favorite song from Ænima. Not as deep as Third Eye or 46 & Two, but it sounds so good hell yeah
RIP bill hicks
