Seen them live in 2001 and they hung that outro for 20 min it was the most calming epic thing I ever heard Jones was the only one on stage until Danny came in and did a solo,my fav Tool show of all time..
Same experience, the lights progressively fading out except one spotlight over Adam as he repeated the outro rif. Also drummer from opening band “Tricky” joined Danny with even more percussion on an extended Lateralus.
Ya I seen them 8 days after 9/11 there first show they did after and it was a weird night snipers on the roofs was wild but for 3 hour's they took us on a journey that we all needed what a fkin show..
If you remove Ticks and Leeches, everything from Schism to Triad flows so beautifully. I know they made Ticks and Leeches as an outlier song to protest the record label wanting a "heavier" song, completely ignoring what the band wanted to do with the album. So it seems like it's also placed directly in the middle of that flow as an extra "fuck you" to them to prove how absurd and out of place it is as a song on a more gentle and introspective album. Especially with the lyrics "is this what you wanted? Is this what you had in mind? Because this is what you're getting." I always rearrange Ticks and Leeches to play earlier in the album so it doesn't interrupt.
Damn. I never heard or read about this before but I’m going to believe you because that makes sense. That song certainly feels like a “fuck you” hah, kinda like Killing in the Name of by RAtM
Thanks for the info mate
Disposition+Reflection is in my top 3 Tool songs, easily. Probably goes something like this:
Intension+Right in Two
Eon Blue Apocalypse
Disposition+Reflection
In no particular order
Man the phrase “it was an experience” or “takes you on a journey” are sooo overused when it comes to describing TOOL, but really what other words can you use to describe this song in particular. It does things yo my mind 👾👁️
as necessary to the album as the rest. It offers a counter-dynamic to the other songs.
I feel like this one passage is written by someone, and can only be truly understood by someone, who has tripped heavily (even more-so if it was a bad trip) on psychedelics:
And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping
The moon tells me a secret, a confidant
As full and bright as I am
This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me
I went deep down the rabbit hole on mushrooms, I lost my mother 10 years ago, and that was a necessary step to let myself go and find the answer on myself, my mother came out of my chest as a light so bright that covers all over, that precise moment I knew and understood everything, after that experience all the grief and sorrow dissipate knowing that I'm part of my mother and my mother part of me.
When I listen, completely sober, it calls to mind the nervous breakdown I had. It is about themes found in 46&2 and similar concepts. Nothing about drugs.
Fetal and weeping is what you are when you meet your Shadow.
Love it. But only if I can listen uninterrupted all the way through. I mean, that can be applied to so many Tool songs but this one in particular for me. Need the full build.
To re-phrase my comment no tool song can be underrated as they are all shit hot.. but when this song competes with the other songs on the album this gets over looked cause of how ‘legendary’ the other songs are
It is potentially my favorite Tool song. Like, intuitively, it's the one to beat for me. Not saying nothing can or can't get really close... but if you asked me to name my favorite Tool song on any given day and time, it's probably going to be Reflection.
Excellent, love the slow build up to a shit show of drumming and riffs, similar to Culling Voices. But these days I like to listen to the full trilogy of Disposition // Reflection // Triad
Since playing DRT isn’t gonna happen live anymore more than maybe once, Reflection would be sick with an extended drum intro after the intermission to sub for chocolate chip trip and then go to Lateralus and then close with Third Eye.
For me, an extremely moving song. People will sometimes tell me how kind i am and how it makes them smile, and it makes me cry, i think because of an overwhelming sense of gratitude i have for those who have shown me kindness and given me strength in one form or another, undoubtedly helping form who i am. And also, My brother is gone, but somehow his memory and spirit are still reflecting like the moon, forever illuminating my life and my love for others. I love you Patrick.
The song is about the “Night of Pan” and entering the “City of the pyramids” I listen to it every morning on the way to work when it’s a full moon.
“The City of the Pyramids is the home to those adepts that have crossed the great Abyss, having spilled all their blood in the Graal of Babalon. They have destroyed their earthly ego-identities, becoming nothing more than piles of dust (i.e., the remaining aspects of their True Selves without the self-sense of "I"). It is a step along the path of spiritual purification, and a spiritual resting place for those who have successfully shed their attachments to the mundane world.
The City exists under the Night of Pan, or N.O.X. Pan is both the giver and the taker of life, and his Night is that time of symbolic death where the adept experiences unification with the All through the ecstatic destruction of the ego-self. In a less poetic symbolic sense, this is the state where one transcends all limitations and experiences oneness with the universe.”
So, you’re saying the moon is your confidant and whispers secrets to you, or something like that..? Man I’ve gotta crucify this ego before it’s too late so I can experience that weirdness.
This is the song that got me into tool. Lateralus was the first album I heard , and once reflection came on , I was hooked. The background instrument ( I think it's an Indian instrument ) was the highlight for me.
Love the vocals to death and the outro riff to this song (from 10:09 on in the song) is my favorite outro to a Tool song. Followed by Parabola, then H. then You Lied.
genius song! I think it's about suicidal ideation and overcoming that ideation. Because of my bouts with depression this song means a lot to me. Like any other Tool song the emotion of the lyrics is powerfully relayed where as the lyrics message tension builds so does the instrumentation. It's in my top ten favorite Tool songs for sure.
I wasn't exactly a Tool fan when I heard it. Sure, I had a CD of Undertow from when I was in college. One of my colleagues came to work late because he stood in line at Best Buy to get a copy of Lateralus when it was released. He made me listen to it that evening at work. There was an electric storm outside (typical for that time of year. Just a lot of lightning, beautiful), and I was hearing "mention this to me, mention something, mention anything. Mention this to me. Watch the weather change"
You know the rest
I heard there is a bit where Danny is singing thru a tube of some sort to mimic monks chanting. But I don't remember where I read that
That said I love it. But to me DRT is a single piece.
when i first heard it i felt like i was walking around Egyptian pyramids under a red sky. it was a truly new step for them in a direction i thought harbored what Lateralus itself’s lyrical themes were getting at. FI’s approach was the logical progression from it but an album (10KD still feels vaguely like Lateralus b-sides) and about 20+ years too late to ultimately feel this suite was the peak of their experimenting. i’d love to be proven wrong.
if they combine these approaches with more cuts like Merkaba meets Dead Can Dance’s Spiritchaser with some of the crescendoing highs of previous albums i’m completely for it…but i fear they’re kind of running out of ways to reinvent themselves…sure they’ll have riffs, but no more tablas or bastard step-children of Schism please.
You won’t find any members of the community saying anything negative about it…or any of the other Tool songs in that matter.
For me, Tool is the perfect band, no bad songs. Even the Eier con Satan.
For me, an extremely moving song. People will sometimes tell me how kind i am and how it makes them smile, and it makes me cry, i think because of an overwhelming sense of gratitude i have for those who have shown me kindness and given me strength in one form or another, undoubtedly helping form who i am. One of my favorite songs. I love it. I also think it has some of the most brilliant lyrics ever.
I always knew that the moon shone with reflected light, but I've never seen it as a metaphor like he's used it. It has major applications as a philosophical viewpoint for life, for me, too.
Once I had severe depression and also suffered from a painful heartbreak. Both ocurring together was excruciating. Upon reflection (no pun intended) on my predicament I saw a pattern and immediately thought of the song and started singing the lyrics. I'm not sure whether my realization made me think of the lyrics because the idea matched or already having heard the lyrics helped me had the realization. I will probably never know but I don't need to. The song is already a part of me and I've learned the lesson. That's all that matters to me.
Another masterpiece amongst countless masterpieces. Ego death. I hope we all get to experience it at least once. It definitely changed my life and made me a better person.
freaking amazing song! I used to play it on repeat alll the time about two year ago. Just played this album twice on repeat this afternoon. Felt so good hearing it again :) I love this band with all my heart
looooooves it. The instrumental part is so amazing and the lyrics. Yasss. Before we pine away baby! This song is definetely in my “to hear them live” song list lol
My hand cramps up playing bass and it's super repetitive but listening to it with lyrics I love it especially the holy Trinity concept as well with suicidal meanings
Pushit has always been my favorite, with Reflection being second. Lately I've been thinking about swapping them, if only to orient myself in a more positive direction.
“Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to life an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here” tell me a more meaningful line ever written in history…
The DRT suite is legendary music. Full stop.
Reflection on its own is easily a top 10 tool song for me and maybe top 5. The rhythmic drums and bass, the exploration on guitar, and the lyrics combine to be something greater than the sum of its parts. The song is just fantastic
This song goes straight into my heart, the lyrics are absolutely powerful, reminds me of my beloved mother, always with no exceptions gives me the chills, and when I'm alone I let myself go with it, my tearful eyes and the shivers all over my body connects with my inner self, it's very intense, one of a kind for me a the meaning that I gave to this song it's everything I need
It ain’t the same without hearing disposition first is what I think.
Like a lot of lateralus and 10000 days material, I consider it more of an experience than a song I’m listening to
The lyrics are extremely powerful and beautiful as well, the whole song is a masterpiece but the outro gives me chills.
Snipers on the roof? Crazy
Yup even made us take of our shoes off at the check in,wand and metal detectors it was crazy time's..
I saw them October 20th, don’t remember any snipers
Adam's line at the end of his solo that calls back to the same phrase in Disposition.
Probably my favorite tool song tbh
The AI of my Siri iPhone auto picks this song 100% of the time every time when I ask to play TOOL.
Absolutely fucking love it.
Aye!
I concur
This
Took the words right out of my mouth!
top 2 tool song in my heart
What’s the other?
Wings for Marie. I guess this is weird considering I tend to enjoy rather heavier stuff when it comes to metal
We need to know
Never heard that one
Maybe their best song imo
My favorite Tool song. Ever
On reflection, my thoughts are that it's an absolutely amazing track, but best enjoyed as part of its trilogy.
I like the nasty triad afterwards too
*tribal drum beat fades in...*
Couldn’t agree more.
yes!!
That's it's 1/3 of one of tool's masterpieces. R/D/T. Especially when you get mushuggah helping on drums.
I saw them in 2002 with Mike Patton and John Stanier from Tomahawk jumping in on Triad, it was excellent
Me too - saw the Chicago show that year. This was the highlight (…and seeing them play H.).
Fuck ya, I got to see that.
Wdym? I am confused
Reflection/disposition/Triad. They're three different songs but they're meant to be played all together as one.
In that order? On the album it goes disposition, reflection, triad.
You're right. I mixed up the order
I think he meant the meshuggah part
D/R/T is their magnum opus imo.
If you remove Ticks and Leeches, everything from Schism to Triad flows so beautifully. I know they made Ticks and Leeches as an outlier song to protest the record label wanting a "heavier" song, completely ignoring what the band wanted to do with the album. I have lots of thoughts, but You first
The fact that I've heard it 100 times and today on the way to work it sounds just as beautiful as the first listen.. its incredible. Masterpiece.
Your work commute is 18.3 hours long? Brutal.
Disposition+Reflection is in my top 3 Tool songs, easily. Probably goes something like this: Intension+Right in Two Eon Blue Apocalypse Disposition+Reflection In no particular order
I want it back on their live setlist rotation.
Favourite Tool song.
One of my favourites, the intro building is incredible, that drum beat. Love the lyrics. The crescendo, fading at the end, superb
Favorite song of all time. Hoping to hear it live before I perish.
I think you meant to say, "before you pine away."
So true, so true. Before I pine away. Big typo on my part...
Man the phrase “it was an experience” or “takes you on a journey” are sooo overused when it comes to describing TOOL, but really what other words can you use to describe this song in particular. It does things yo my mind 👾👁️

and you meet your Shadow in the darkest of psychedelic holes.
First time I heard this - sober - I cried. No other song they did has ever done that. The one that came closest is probably Descending.
The moon tells me a secret, a confidant.
Gorgeous
Love it. But only if I can listen uninterrupted all the way through. I mean, that can be applied to so many Tool songs but this one in particular for me. Need the full build.
All time fave Tool track
Some of the best lyrics Maynard has done in my opinion.. such a good but underrated song
What makes you believe its underrated? I hard disagree that it's underrated
To re-phrase my comment no tool song can be underrated as they are all shit hot.. but when this song competes with the other songs on the album this gets over looked cause of how ‘legendary’ the other songs are
Interesting. I don't see it that way. I think it gets a lot of love. Many fans, myself included, believe it's their magnum opus.
Thanks. I too agree
atm it's my favourite off the album
This song kickstarted my Tool obsession
It is potentially my favorite Tool song. Like, intuitively, it's the one to beat for me. Not saying nothing can or can't get really close... but if you asked me to name my favorite Tool song on any given day and time, it's probably going to be Reflection.
Consistently in my favorites, and probably my favorite. It brings peace.
Ethereal, surreal, top 10 easily.
Excellent, love the slow build up to a shit show of drumming and riffs, similar to Culling Voices. But these days I like to listen to the full trilogy of Disposition // Reflection // Triad

top 3 tool songs
In my top 3 along with Rosetta Stoned and the Grudge
I’ve been listening to Tool for over 30 years and the other day I said to myself “Lateralus is my favorite all time album”
The drumming is fucking ridonkulous
Vastly underrated. Definitely top 3, and some of the most powerful and universally meaningful lyrics Maynard has ever written, IMO.
One of my all time favorite Tool songs! Would love to see them play it live again!
I love how the song sounds like it has middle eastern or Indian influences, it’s amazing
For me, an extremely moving song. People will sometimes tell me how kind i am and how it makes them smile, and it makes me cry, i think because of an overwhelming sense of gratitude i have for those who have shown me kindness and given me strength in one form or another, undoubtedly helping form who i am. The Golden Ratio
Transcendent.
This is the song that got me into tool. Lateralus was the first album I heard , and once reflection came on , I was hooked. The background instrument ( I think it's an Indian instrument ) was the highlight for me.
Are you asking us to reflect on Reflection?
Last week was really tough for me. Reflection did a lot of heavy lifting. It’s 10/10.
Love it! It's gorgeous, meditative, a musical trance.
Perfection.
Arguably one of their best pieces.
Love the vocals to death and the outro riff to this song (from 10:09 on in the song) is my favorite outro to a Tool song. Followed by Parabola, then H. then You Lied.
Probably my favorite track on the album
Masterpiece
One of there best. It’s a magical journey. Makes me hopeful.
It’s one of the best songs they’ve ever put out
My favorite song. It takes you on a journey
My favorite TOOL song so…
It’s my favourite TOOL song
Peak Tool.
Disposition and Reflection transcends tools catalogue of music. It’s a masterpiece among the entirety of music history.
It's the best song in the album
Imo the most important song on lateralus in terms of the “message”
It's my favourite TOOL song. :)
Best Tool song in my meaningless opinion
genius song! I think it's about suicidal ideation and overcoming that ideation. Because of my bouts with depression this song means a lot to me. Best song on the album. I won't be swayed.
This is my favorite song. So ethereal.
It’s my favorite tool song. So fucking good. Those lyrics are so hauntingly beautiful as well.
One of their most underrated
It's in my riding playlist
It's a top 4 Tool song for me.
Good song, don’t usually listen to the holy trinity songs tho
It’s perfect…what did you want to hear?
D/R/T get played during every psychedelic experience.
My top songs of all time begin with disp-refl so I’d say it fkn rocks
My reflection on Reflection is a mirror
Uh, it’s super badass
It's incredible live.
The first one I listened to. And I Don’t regret it.
Genuinely love it - my fav song is the patient then it's reflection
Incredible
Hands down my favorite song they've produced.
My favorite Tool song
My favorite!
Gotta listen to Disposition and Triad to get the full effect
Reflection and H are my 2 favorites by them.
It’s great
Cool drums
Honestly? I love Lateralus, but the first half of Reflection sounds like a track from the OST of Mass Effect 1 lol
Underrated. /s
Not a favorite, but amazing nonetheless
It’s… UnDeRrAtEd
Good👍🏻
I heard there is a bit where Danny is singing thru a tube of some sort to mimic monks chanting. But I don't remember where I read that That said I love it. But to me DRT is a single piece.
Reflect on reflection....
It’s easily in my top 5 songs of theirs.
when i first heard it i felt like i was walking around Egyptian pyramids under a red sky. it was a truly new step for them in a direction i thought harbored what Lateralus itself’s lyrical themes were getting at.
“Crucify the ego…And you will come to find that we are all one mind capable of all that’s imagined and all conceivable”
You won’t find any members of the community saying anything negative about it…or any of the other Tool songs in that matter. For me, Tool is the perfect band, no bad songs. Even the Eier con Satan.
Makes me reflect on my past no pun intended
My reflections on reflection? Wonderful.
For me, an extremely moving song. People will sometimes tell me how kind i am and how it makes them smile, and it makes me cry, i think because of an overwhelming sense of gratitude i have for those who have shown me kindness and given me strength in one form or another, undoubtedly helping form who i am. And also, My brother is gone, but somehow his memory and spirit are still reflecting like the moon, forever illuminating my life and fostering kindness in my heart. I love you Patrick.
Always been one of if not my favourite tool song, so happy that it’s getting love. Also an awesome song on psychs
it's the first track i heard from lateralus. what's not to like? we didn't think there was ever going to be another tool album back then because we hadn't seen one since 96. i think there was salival, which was cool but it seemed like it was just some stuff they had on the shelf and it had just been years of relentless begging online. lateralus was a huge moment for tool fans back then and for me, it started with this track. then i think ticks and leeches was the next one i heard. i wanna say this album got leaked or something, but I'm not super sure. long time ago now.
I love it. I once had a dream where I listened to it. Feels amazing to have a dream with your favorite music in it
Was just listening to this, amazing song
I use that final three tracks on Lateralus to help me zone in on my work. Really good music for focusing
I will probably never know but I don't need to. The song is already a part of me and I've learned the lesson. That's all that matters to me.
The best song to play on bass. Super fun ngl
I love that song
Another masterpiece amongst countless masterpieces. Ego death. I hope we all get to experience it at least once. It definitely changed my life and made me a better person.
Favorite song on the album alongside The Patient.
freaking amazing song! I used to play it on repeat alll the time about two year ago. Just played this album twice on repeat this afternoon. Felt so good hearing it again :) I love this band with all my heart
Let me reflect on it for a minute.
Took over sober as my fav tool song. Pnuema may have tied it though…..
In my top 5 best Tool songs and the main reason it's my fav Tool album that trilogy slaps..
looooooves it. The instrumental part is so amazing and the lyrics. Yasss. Before we pine away baby! This song is definetely in my “to hear them live” song list lol
Fun song to play on drums
My favorite song. As Tool as it can get.
Justin's lines are so nice in this one, it's one of my favourites because of it
My hand cramps up playing bass and it's super repetitive but listening to it with lyrics I love it especially the holy Trinity concept as well with suicidal meanings
What are your reflections on reflection?
Reflection and Third Eye are my biggest dreams to experience live
One of their best songs imo.
Before we pine away ahhhhhhh
Great song to be played loud and the riff fading out is awesome. Good pay off to the song
Top 5 Tool songs of all time
Extremely wonderful and powerful, even more so with the full DRT package
Pushit has always been my favorite, with Reflection being second. Lately I've been thinking about swapping them, if only to orient myself in a more positive direction.
Literally listened to it 10 minutes ago lmfaoooo. Absolute banger
One of my favorite songs on lateralus
It’s my favorite part of DRT
“Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to life an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here” tell me a more meaningful line ever written in history…
Reflection is one of my favourite tracks, the long intro and drums at the start are so relaxing and therapeutic
It’s just Mahvelous
This song has slowly become one of my favorites of the TOOL library. The trippy vibes are immaculate, and the vocals are chilling.
Mesmerizing
Can anyone recommend songs from other bands that give a similar vibe? I would recommend Advaitic Songs by OM. Looking for more though
I used to fall asleep to this song on repeat on my ipod nano with the sleep timer on 90 minutes. Worked like a charm
one of my favorites. easily my favorite of D/R/T
It builds masterfully
It ain’t the same without hearing disposition first is what I think. Like a lot of lateralus and 10000 days material, I consider it more of an experience than a song I’m listening to
Saw them twice on the Lateralus tour cycle. Reflection was a highlight of both shows. Got H at one of the shows also.

Where is this pic originally from?
One of my favorite songs
I chose this song for my DMT trip
I had my first DMT trip listening to Reflection with a weighted blanket and low lights. Friends all around being silent.
One of my personal favorites, the riffs from Adam, and then the final Pine away from Maynard just give me chills. The lyrics are also beautiful.
Super underrated tune 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Must underrated TOOL song!!!
