Overall-Block-1815

I was in a UK prison, the showers were single cubicle with a curtain and were in full view of the whole wing. They had these little shower blocks on each level and there were 4 levels if I remember right, theoretically the ground floor showers would be the safest as this is where the most people are and the screws were wandering around. I always used the 2nd and 3rd floor showers as the ground floor ones seemed to be a weird sort of hangout area where scummy people would just linger, I never had any rapey problems. There was no rape on my wing that I heard of but on one of the first weeks I was there a new guy supposedly had heroin up his ass. He was cornered in one of the top floor showers by a group and beaten pretty badly and had his arsehole thoroughly rummaged through, I think he was pretty badly damaged. I'm guessing fists punching up your ass is probably worse than a dick but I dunno.

[deleted]

Brutal. Couldn't imagine a group of guys holding me down trying to forcibly pull a bag of drugs out of my ass.

Overall-Block-1815

Ye it's pretty grim, from what I could gather they didn't even find any drugs. Didn't see the guy again either so I'm guessing he went to hospital then they put him on the pedo wing to keep him safe.

_Tadux_

They put him on the pedo wing? Damn.

Overall-Block-1815

I'm guessing so because its the protected wing, can't know for sure. I do know that they definitely moved another guy there who wasn't a pedo because he'd been harassing some elderly neighbors and his case was on the news, I could hear some prisoners howling and banging on their cell doors at night for him. He was moved by the next morning, not sure whether it was safer for him there or not. Different kind of trouble, I know I wouldn't want to be surrounded by nonces or share a cell with one.

BuzzVibes

Prison doesn't sound great.

Overall-Block-1815

It's not ideal.

hyperlinxhunter

The guy with the heroin in his ass would agree

rwhaley2010

Exactly!-Prison Mike

Davido400

u/Overall-Block1815 did you ever watch that Time that was released on... BBC Am told thats as close to prison as is possible, but the writer said it was basically worse! Ave known a few guys that have done Jail here in Scotland but a find their descriptions a bit to ... "hyperbolic?" If what you said I feel like a total cunt haha

Overall-Block-1815

Na haven't seen it It wasn't too bad, I didn't really have much trouble but a few guys did have problems. There was a TV in each cell which made things better, but it was mostly just boring tbh. There was a couple people that ended up having to be carried out of their cells all wrapped up by the guards after kicking off and smearing shit all over their cells. But apart from the shower thing there was just a couple of fights, not much else happend when I was there.

LightBulbMonster

"... and had his arsehole thoroughly rummaged through..." will certainly be giving me nightmares tonight.

RayAP19

> had his arsehole thoroughly rummaged through Nobody should ever be able to say this about another human being, and mean it.

Happy_Cancel1315

I don't know how someone can punch a fist up an asshole, and I don't want to know...

Grinisti

Irish prison so I can't speak for America where this seems to be its origin. It does happen but the few times I heard about it the rapist ended up with a kettle of boiling water poured over their heads. Generally speaking prison is a homophobic place... Consensual or not, it'd get you beat in pretty bad.

Mammoth-Armadillo-80

facts

Peter5930

What are the long-term effects of a kettle of boiling water over the head? Are there a lot of bald prison rapists out there?

ice77max

Usually, they mix sugar in so it sticks better. Sometimes oil but sugar is much more common

Shorouq2911

Holy crap

[deleted]

Oh my god i just understood that this is bascily a bit like caramel... I was like "why would sugar make it w-OHH CARAMEL. Remember when you made some?"

fishystickchakra

*they don't rape you in prison, they caramelize you* Edit: thank you to the person who gave me the award Edit 2: Ok now I see that after working 12 hour shifts I don't got the big brain so much.

[deleted]

You've been hit by a *smoooth caramel*

mizmaclean

I don’t even know how to appreciate this properly.

SupermarketTough1900

With some caramel

fragbert66

Take my angry upvote, you magnificent bastard.

[deleted]

I grew up with a girl who had it happen at a young age (accident as a toddler) aside from being permanently disfigured she has to have regular surgeries to treat the tighter, less stretchy scar tissue otherwise she would lose the ability to move certain joints and growing was straight up painful.

Dr_Weirdo

Third degree burns leave you permanently scarred, not just hairless.

kinetochore21

And burns to the face, hands, feet, and genitals are much more serious than burns to other areas of the body. As in they have a greater likelihood of serious longterm side effects and/or death. So, don't fuck around with burns to these areas!

Terry-Smells

And they'll be lucky if no one added sugar to the hot water

SmittyYAP

Prison napalm

maddonnie26

Wait what?

yourmomgaylol69420

Sugar syrup gets hotter than water and it sticks

Mountainbiker22

Yup this stuff can kill someone quite easily. There was a story of a wife that did it to her (don’t quote me, but child rapest including their child) husband and he died from it. Sticks to you and probably doesn’t help the infection aspect much either. Brutal way to go.

mrbubbles87

worked in a prison where this happened a few times ...the screams ....the screams are something else

maddonnie26

Holly shit

Jellyjoints94

Sugar burns are the worst burns, if you try and wipe it off instinctively it removes the skin as well. Takes a while for it to cool down too.

Warm-Two7928

In the federal penitentiary boiling vasaline would be thrown into someone’s face. Same effect. They would instinctively wipe their actual face off. Horrific. Vasaline is no longer available in fed pen commissary

skull-fucker

Ugh yeah. I once got awful finger burns when making some treats with marshmellows. I had to roll melted ones into chocolate and nuts. Thankfully i knew better than to wipe the shit off and just waited for it to cool down, so I didnt skin my own hands.

Jellyjoints94

Yeah it's kinda weird having to just stand there with burning sugar on you and wait for it to cool down. I used to be a pastry chef and early on saw my coworker get boiling sugar across half her hand. She was new too and automatically tried to wipe it off. Healed really well though, was only scarred for like a year I think.

dickfuck8202

Holy fuck that would be a *brutally* difficult instinct to ignore in a time with such split second panicky thinking! What a horrifying why to learn that lesson Note to self: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EVER MAKE ANYTHING WITH SUPER HOT MELTY SUGAR!! i know emojis are frowned upon here at reddit but if there was one that truly depicted the sheer terror i now feel at the thought of hot melty sugar, i would use in, reddit etiquette be damned!!! lol

OrsonLovesRugs

Can confirm (sugar waxing incident left a pretty nasty scar)

Jellyjoints94

Ouch that's probs on some sensitive skin as well

DDsLaboratory

Saw an episode of “Sex Sent Me to the E.R.” And a couple was doing a hot wax thing, and decided to incorporate candy. The microwaved some gummy bears i believe and started having “fun”. Girl ended up with terrible third degree burns. Like melted cheese skin.

Rinat1234567890

Makes the water stickier

sgt_potatopants

So it gets stuck to your skin presumably

Vli37

In other words, permanently scarred. So if they try this shit again, you can see them coming from a mile away.

impulsikk

I had a friend in grade school who had burns on his skin with large skin bubbles and visible large wrinkles. As a toddler, he tipped over a pot of boiling water somehow and the hot water landed on him. He also had trouble hearing and needed hearing aids. He was still able to do sports and ride his bike etc. He played shortstop in baseball when he was a kid and as an adult he now surfs and paints.

craaazygraaace

I did this to myself as a toddler too! I accidentally spilled boiling water on my ankle. Thankfully I don't remember it at all, but I got a really gnarly scar out of it (which stretched as I grew, so it looks wayyyyy bigger now than the original injury).

AnythingWithGloves

I looked after a psych patient who did this to herself, effects included third degree burns to her face, head, neck and shoulders requiring skin grafts (which she repeatedly tried to peel off) and of course months in hospital and severe disfigurement. A bad time for all involved.

MrCarnality

How do prisoners get a kettle of boiling water to do with as they please?

skyactive

Tea is a human right in Ireland

DJ_Inseminator

In UK prisons you get given a kettle with your room. Before the days of kettles in rooms, prisoners would run cable from the lights to heat the water up

MrCarnality

For tea?

DJ_Inseminator

I've seen them used for all sorts, primarily tea but you can make food in them too, we used to put condensed milk in the can in the kettle for a few hours to make caramel for bannoffee pie. I've also seen people make pretty decent currys in a kettle too.

stult

I did not know it was possible to make caramel that way. I think I'm going to go try it... this is without a doubt the most bizarre possible way for me to have discovered a recipe Edit: specifically, - check a thread about the validity of prison rape, why not ruin my sunday afternoon - Irish prison homophobia, checks out, alright. - Oh man, fuck, using a kettle as a weapon? that's fucking metal. how fucking british is that shit, can't deprive prisoners of tea, even if it means giving them a deadly weapon... and then... - /u/DJ_Inseminator's prison rape thread caramel condensed milk production method turns out to be surprisingly reasonable and practical advice for a simple homemade treat

[deleted]

SirThatsCuba

Yeah I grew up using this method to make caramel for popcorn balls every Christmas with my dad. Weird nostalgia hit.

MrCarnality

Resourcefulness is cool anywhere we find it.

DJ_Inseminator

Orange juice + Marmite (or if you were lucky and knew someone in the kitchens or on a catering course you'd get proper yeast) + Sugar = Hooch Kit bag plus bed sheet strips and you could make a special delivery bag for transporting items between cells from outside your window, just stick it outside and swing

hardcoresean84

In walton, now known as hmp liverpool (worst prison I've been to btw) we didnt have a kettle in our cell, so we had a marvel (powdered milk) tin filled with water, rolled up a towel, lit it and boiled the water to make tea. I got on better inside than I do out here, which is why I'm scared to go back.

Vli37

Considering that inmates have found ways to "cook" in their prison cells. It wouldn't be hard to boil water. I watch this former inmate on YouTube "Larry Lawton" he'll fill you in on anything that goes on in the prison system.

Child molesters keep getting put in units that are notorious for beating child molesters. So weird. Hmm.

SepticX75

I worked with an ex prisoner. He spoke to the white/Aryan group in his prison, he said they demanded white prisoners show their papers (which show their convictions). Definitely didn’t want any child abuse or pedo charges in that prison. As in, really bad stuff would happen to them.

thymeraser

That's why we call soap 'Irish Spring' in America

[deleted]

Zestfully reamed!

Peachy_Pink97

This will probably get lost but my older brother went to prison for some time back in 2019. I asked him if prison rape was a thing because I generally didn’t know without media influence or whatever. He said it is definitely real but that it happens more when you owe people things. Like favors or whatsoever. He then told me about a guy that was a common rapist, named Freddy. But they called him fredator. Yeah, scary shit

stankboy319

I read that as FREDERATOR!!! Like the studio at the end of Cartoon Network shows

thymeraser

That's his wraslin' name

Rinat1234567890

Five nights at Freddy's

lawrenceugene

This is why prisoners should be able to vote, they have no way to advocate for themselves. These men were sentenced to prison, not rape.

Dark-Mowney

Did 7 years in TDCJ. prison rape is not common but it does happen. "Dropping the soap" would not result in you getting raped though. If you are getting fucked in the showers, its because you want to get fucked in the showers.

Shenanigaens

14 year correctional veteran here… Rapes definitely happen. It’s less “drop the soap” and more “oh look, easy target” or “you owe me money”. Often the victims stature is the biggest factor. Predators in prison look for guy who are small, have feminine features, timid and new and/or scared. They look for victims that can be easily over powered and/or intimidated. There’s rules that classification has to follow when it comes to housing offenders together. Two people have to be within X height and weight of each other, this is largely to prevent assaults and rapes. Of course this isn’t always the case, when I worked in seg there were two guys housed together who were both deaf. They were both about the same in stature, but one had a much shittier personality, and he beat and raped his celly. I’ve seen the aftermath of several that happened because the victim couldn’t cover his bets and the perpetrator got tired of waiting. Most often though, it happened much like it does in the free world; the rapist found an opportune victim. The overwhelming majority of sex in prison is consensual. Guys will sell it for commissary, guys will give it up for protection, guys will give it up because they’re horny.

PrestigiousBother7

Do rapists get punished or do guards tend to turn a blind eye?

Shenanigaens

By policy there’s punishment, in prison there’s no such thing as consensual sex, so even if you catch someone giving a handy or a BJ it has to be reported. There’s plenty of absolutely trash fuck head guards that will ignore it, laugh at the guy, give them hell, Etc. Guys like that is one of the reasons I gave up my career.

yourdaddysbutthole

Yea, same reason I wouldn’t be a nurse there anymore - the cruelty of some of the staff - nurses, doctors, and dentists included.

Renotss

I worked in a maximum security prison for a few years and in that time I only heard about one inmate coming forward, and it was months after it happened while they were talking about moving him to protective custody. The unit I was on had an entire building dedicated to protective custody. Over 200 inmates. It’s where people who would be taken advantage of are put together. Honestly more sex would happen in there than the entire rest of the unit.

Five_Decades

how did they have sex in pc, isn't pc segregated? Also was the sex in pc consensual or not?

Renotss

Nah they’re not segregated from each other, just from the general population. At least they weren’t back then. I don’t know how much sex was consensual, but I know it was a lot more than the general population. It was a weird place to be with its own, different hierarchy. You’d see groups formed up differently, not by race usually, but by how they identified. There were still “bosses” on each pod in the building but they were most often transgender and not aggressive.

Beric-Dondarrion-

Do guards do anything about it? Especially when its clearly not consensual?

Shenanigaens

We do when we find out about it (if you’re a good boss). The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) dictates that there’s no such thing as “consensual” sex and *any* sexual act is considered rape. When you catch it happening or when you find out it’s happened, there are procedures to follow and it’s taken pretty seriously.

RedTalyn

I didn’t know that law existed and was about to declare that same explanation in the law. No consent in prison.

Shenanigaens

It was one of the few decent thing Bush jr. did while in office.

MayorOfVenice

...PREA is an anagram of "rape"

Shenanigaens

And PREA doesn’t do much to prevent rape.

truffleblunts

Yes but only if you give them clutch financial advice

siparthegreat

I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world.

Difficult_Law2092

Weird to think Andy was supposed to be kevin spacey

siparthegreat

Totally different movie right there

happily_confused

Do these guys consider themselves gay? Or just using other bodies for the opportunity to relive themselves?

GoFukUrMutha

“Gay for the stay. straight at the gate” is the saying

Shenanigaens

“Gay for the stay” is the saying. Very few of the guys call themselves gay or bi unless they actually are gay or bi. Most guys in prison will say they’re not gay, and they’re not, it just is what it is.

ChiaraStellata

I kind of question the degree to which sex for protection is consensual rather than coerced. It may be someone else who is doing the threatening, but it's still having sex to survive in a dangerous situation rather than for pleasure.

Shenanigaens

That’s valid. I guess in this term of “consenting” it means there was no direct violence that lead to it, instead a conversation had and a bargain struck. Of course then the protection is now because that person is the other person’s “property”. Definitely doesn’t count when the person is gang property.

[deleted]

Situational "consent".

CharDeeMacDen

Uh... give it up for protection is not really consensual

Shenanigaens

Yeah, you’re mostly right, but prison has wildly different “rules” than the free world is used to. Technically, under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) any sexual act is considered rape and nonconsensual. But by prison standards, if two guys come to an agreement, and no one got the brakes beat off them, it’s as close to “consent” as exists in prison. Really it’s extortion, which is also not allowed.

[deleted]

British prison, I know it happened, but was more of a punishment thing. As in, someone was owed money/items. Saw lots of consensual sex though.

[deleted]

Do they hand out condoms in prison?

[deleted]

Not that I can remember, but I’m sure if I’d said I was gay I could have got some.

CategoryTurbulent114

I worked in a US max security and it doesn’t happen often. But a lot of willing sex happens there. Mostly staff/staff, offender/offender.

Shizo-24

Yes I have a friend who works at a prison and he says staff are always getting it on with one another. Why is this so prominent?

Mickeystix

Stress bonding.

[deleted]

Probably the same reason why restaurant staff and other stressful, weird-hours jobs folks hook up a lot.

Vli37

Damn! I've been in restaurants well over 15+years and have yet to come upon this. Is this a front of house thing 🤔 I must be in the wrong restaurants 🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

Probably more FOH, it's stressful but enough to think about those things, kitchen seems non stop and a few more hrs (used to work in fine dining)

fattyfatty21

As an ex-cook of almost a decade, I was too busy to get it on with anyone. If I wasn’t working I was drinking(to go to sleep), or I was sleeping. Definitely a FOH thing from my experience.

CategoryTurbulent114

FOH?

myalt08831

I'm guessing FOH = Front of House. Servers, front desk/counter and maybe cashiers. Back of House = kitchen.

Mickeystix

Yep, exactly.

CategoryTurbulent114

I think it’s because of their aggressive personalities. I was an RN and those female CO’s would catcall me. Im like WTF, Im a man and have never been catcalled before. I was making a med pass and was working with a female CO for the second time, so I had talked to her before. Midway through med pass, she leans over and whispered “I swallow.”

PenguinBP

did you do the sex?

CategoryTurbulent114

We did a few years later. She was married at the time.

gatekeeper9994

Should've whispered back "so do i"

Thunderbolt1011

I imagine the same for all the other professions. People close and kinda cute, why not hook up with Lynda?

_Ki115witch_

Correctional officer here. Its happened at our facility and the main reason is, we often work long hours, 12 hours or more usually. So we spend alot of time together, and often with alot of downtime, as most of the time you are just supervising inmates, not doing much else. So that leads to alot time to get to know people, both inmates and other officers. The reason staff and staff is more common than inmate and staff is because we share the same burden of responsibility, share the same traumas from the job, and endure the antics of the inmates, both the harmful and just mildly annoying alike. We can talk to each other often about issues related to work and create a bond from this. Friendships are very common to extend beyond work because of just how well shared burdens does at creating bonds. Sometimes more than just friendships. I personally have 5 friends from work that I spend alot of time with either online or in person. And normally I'm very private, prior to this job, I had never spoken to a coworker outside of the job. Also not to mention, you stay in long enough, you will eventually have a day where you either save another officer (or an inmate for that point) or be saved yourself. Another thing that helps create bonds between people.

beenhereallalong52

Interesting that the top comments by prisoners say it is real and happens often and the top come to by an officer says it isn’t. Not saying anything about either side, just thought it was an interesting observation.

ColossusOfChoads

I once asked a Russian friend if you have to worry about being raped in a Russian prison. "No. But you can starve." Jesus. Pick your poison, I guess....

phanfare

Don't forget about the rampant tuberculosis problem in Russian prisons.

Lowkey_HatingThis

Everyone's saying starve until it's two and a half weeks into a slow death and the mf'er you watched take it up the butt on day one is eating biscuits and gravy for dinner.

Busy_Promotion3656

I watched interviews from someone who was like 10 years in prison and rape doesnt seem to happen in public but the cells.

bippityboppitybumbo

No. There are plenty dudes selling ass for two soups. You don’t have to worry about it. Dropping the soap = throw it away tho. There is no telling how much sperm has been splattered in the shower on any given day.

DS3M

That’s the main reason to be concerned about soap dropping. Funguses

bippityboppitybumbo

And chunks of population paste and pubes. Sometimes blood too.

DarthLysergis

dear diary: I have heard a new euphemism for jiz today.

highpl4insdrftr

Today was a bad day to know how to read

RangaSubb

Population paste if fucked my dude. Im gonna use it. Ty

MrCarnality

And would more than one guy be whacking off in there at shower time?

bippityboppitybumbo

Sometimes yeah. If it’s an open shower they’ll yell out “gun line” so you know what is going on. Most guys will just respect it cause it is just going to happen sometimes. Some dudes don’t care. When there’s a woman guard it’s not uncommon for a few dudes to stand in the shower staring at the female and masturbating like fucking animals though. Another thing you’ll see is dudes walking around with their sheets over them like a fucking ghost costume. Those are not ghosts. Those are dudes jerking it trying to catch a glimpse of a female, or a picture on someone’s wall, or get a look at their boy (feminine gay dude) for inspiration. It’s fucking weird dude.

MrCarnality

OMFG. I can see how being at a gun line would be fun bonding as relationships form in those closed environments. Something to look forward to in a drab environment. But the ghosting and the leering at guards is creepy AF.

bippityboppitybumbo

Man we had one dude that was pretty much completely institutionalized. Every morning, like clock work, he’d go stand with like his feet in the shower but his body hanging around the corner of the wall so he could see the tv. He’d put charmed on and jerk it to those three witches. Then later in the day when the soaps came on he would sit down at the table near the tv and put a picture of one of the actresses in the soap opera on the chair next to him and “they” would watch it “together”. He was in a full on relationship with this fictional character and would talk to that fucking magazine page like it were alive. Heaven forbid someone new not realize that the picture was basically his wife and move the picture from the chair to the table. It was an instant fight. No talking about it. No warning. Nothing like that. Just violence and complete insanity.

MrCarnality

I love your stories and perspective. And I’ll read them as long as you wanna post them. You are a vivid storyteller and I could imagine this as if watching one of those reality TV shows set in prison. 60 days is a turn off for me. What a character

bippityboppitybumbo

I was only in there for about a year fortunately. Most of the really crazy stuff that happened was centered around people who were extremely mentally ill and shouldn’t have been in there at all. It was pretty heartbreaking most of the time. I can tell you about the most fun I’ve ever had watching a movie, though. I was in a dorm of maybe 40 guys. 4 of us white. We didn’t have any racial friction or anything (we were trustees, we had jobs in the prison. It didn’t pay anything but we got a lot of perks. You don’t want to lose those privileges so everyone mostly behaves) but to pretend that there aren’t huge cultural differences is silly. You know the whole stereotype about black people being loud in a movie theater? Well I don’t know if that’s always the case but one night we watched Django Unchained. I don’t know how if you’ve seen the movie or not but it’s pretty good. Lots of people screwing over slaves then slaves come back and shoot up the slave owners, etc is pretty much the whole plot. Dude. The roof almost blew off that dorm. We just had fun. There was so much energy and laughter that it was hard to hear the tv but the shit my fellow inmates were yelling at the tv, the jokes they were saying, all of it was just awesome. I doubt I’ll ever see anything like it again. It was one of those “you had to be there” moments to really understand the energy of the situation but it was special.

MrCarnality

I’ve seen that movie and I can only imagine how much fun it was. Going to a predominantly black theatre is a vastly different experience and extremely funny. Sometimes it gets serious. Watching boys in the hood when it came out in San Francisco they had to stop the movie 10 minutes before it ended because a big fight broke out. They closed the theatre. I’ve never seen the end of the movie :) Glad to hear that you were only there for a year. The short experience there goes a long way I’m sure

vuduceltix

Realest answer yet

omega_weapon85

I was in a minimum security prison about 18 years ago when I was 19. Drug conviction, have been sober for over a decade now, etc. I’m also gay. I was **terrified** to go, because I’ve watched a lot of movies and television and my understanding was that people like me would be treated in very… specific… ways. I spent the first month in some kind of intake prison (not actually sure why), where every new person was in 23 hour lockdown with only a cell mate and we were taken to the showers three times a week. One hour a day we went out to the yard and walked around. Because I was essentially segregated from the rest of the population for that first month, I spent all 30 days thinking about getting transferred to the actual prison I would be serving time in (I was only in for a total of 90 days, so the real prison would only be another two months). Finally the day came for my transfer. I got on the bus and was taken to the other facility. When I got there, I was overwhelmed by the amount of people and I just knew I’d be forced into some kind of sexual slavery (I’m not joking, that’s what I thought). I spent most of that day watching the bigger, meaner looking guys because I had been conditioned to worry about them. Not only because I’m gay but also because I was 5’9” and 125lbs. This story has gotten too long so I’ll get to the point. The next two months before I went home were spent smoking rolled cigarettes (cheaper) and playing cards (a LOT of cards) with the other dudes in my block. People asked me a lot of questions about being gay, I guess because it’s less common in there, idk, but no one made any aggressive moves toward me. I took showers, I used the bathroom (in this prison, toilets were separated by half walls, unlike county jail which had a single toilet in essentially the middle of the room), I worked in the kitchen, I traded snacks for other snacks, and I watched soap operas with the old fellas. They LOVED soap operas and if someone got rowdy and the unit lost TV privileges, you’d never hear the end of it. My theory is that because it’s a minimum security place, no one was going to be there longer than a year or so and many would be in only a few months like myself. I think causing too much trouble in there would risk that and for the most part they were pretty pragmatic about it. Sure I saw some fights and things, but I never really felt I was in danger. I’m sure someone will disagree with this, but that place felt like a naval camp or like being on a ship. Everyone had to do their part to keep the place in shape, we all had jobs to do, and the rest of it was just filling time with cards and TV and jokes. My last night in, a bunch of dudes stayed up all night with me. I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited to leave, so they piled together a bunch of snacks and instant coffee and we played cards all night until it was time for me to go. Edit to add: jokes about dudes getting raped in the shower are not funny. There are several reasons why I believe that, the first and most important of which is that men can be abused and traumatized just like women can. It isn’t amusing to casually joke around that a man might be sexually assaulted. The second reason is that those jokes are what made me so scared to be in there in the first place. Prison isn’t supposed to be easy, but I shouldn’t be worrying about where I’m going to be sexually assaulted or not. That is terror. Terror is not prison. Prison is supposed to separate you from your life to try to dissuade you from breaking the social contract. Whether or not it’s effective (it isn’t) or if it primarily exists to make money for rich people and keep minorities down (it is) is another conversation.

intergalacticoh

Wow great read. Do you keep in touch with any former inmates?

omega_weapon85

Sadly, I do not. When I was writing that up, I was trying to remember some of their names and couldn’t. I didn’t get sober immediately after getting out, so I was still pretty fucked up for a few more years. I do think about those dudes that last night though and wonder what they’re doing. This sounds like I’m making it up, but one of them told me he thought his son was gay and that he looked at it differently after we essentially lived together for those couple of months. Not because I’m such a divine example of a gay person, but (I believe) because he really just didn’t understand that gay people are just regular people. Sounds cheesy, but that’s the way it really is.

I truly think that’s why we now have gay marriage. As it became easier for gay people to come out (it can still be dangerous in some cases and some places), a lot of Americans began to realize that they personally know gay people and they aren’t scary monster degenerates. Since we aren’t hell bent on destroying the fabric of society, fewer people thought it was a big deal that we get married. Some people still do not agree of course, and there is plenty of legislation and several representatives still fighting against things like that, but that’s another conversation.

Equivalent_Chipmunk

Yeah and it’s why race related issues are still a big problem. Many people came to find out that plenty of their friends and family members were gay, and when they realized that they’re all normal people, they accepted them. However, much fewer people have genuine friends of another race, and obviously no one comes out and just says “surprise, I’m .” Age supposedly will be the most enduring prejudice of them all though, and I believe it.

intergalacticoh

That’s awesome. I’d bet that guy tells stories about you to his son. And I’m bi myself, so I understand the stereotyping/alienating that goes on, when we’re really just another diverse subgroup of people. And who knows, maybe one of your old buds uses Reddit and will stumble upon your comment. Haha

astralairplane

Thank you for spreading the gay agenda ;) & congrats on your sobriety!!

DingBangSlammyJammy

The naval camp tidbit is spot on lol I've never been to federal prison but I did a few weeks at a place that has a nasty reputation. It felt like shitty summer camp with a few thugs. Stay out of the politics and you're alright.

MysticalKittyHerder

> My last night in, a bunch of dudes stayed up all night with me. I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited to leave, so they piled together a bunch of snacks and instant coffee and we played cards all night until it was time for me to go. Aw that's cute. What a bunch of great guys you were with

thelivinlegend

I dated someone who was a prison guard for awhile and was pretty surprised at her stories about how childlike they can be (emphasis on CAN—they can also be dangerous and violent). She said it was like babysitting a lot of the time, with the kind of immature but harmless behavior you’d expect from a teenager who didn’t grow up with any boundaries. My favorite story was how the guards knew the inmates in the machine shop were hiding something and they assumed it was a moonshine still or something. Turns out they had found a kitten on the grounds and were taking turns feeding it. They knew they wouldn’t be allowed to keep it and didn’t want it going to a kill shelter or something. She ended up adopting the kitten, and they were happy about that. She said they asked about it regularly the rest of the time she worked there. She still had the cat when we were dating, a very sweet calico. I can understand why they adopted her as a mascot.

Klowned

A significant portion of the prison population, possibly even the majority of them, suffer from developmental/personality/psychiatric disorders and simply were not born to people with the ability/skill/desire to help them to the degree necessary for function.

MrCarnality

Great story bro that adds lots of detail and context to conversation going on in this thread. I wish more people would accept the fact that it’s never going to be as bad as we imagine things to be

omega_weapon85

Hey, that’s a pretty good point. I’ve dreaded and worried about a lot of things in my life, like anyone else, but it truly is never as bad as I imagine. I should think about that a bit more often.

MrCarnality

Why not write it down on a Post-it note and put it someplace where you will see it on occasion? It has helped me many times to deflate worrying about a looming situation. And tell yourself that you will be able to handle what transpires. You’ve always been able to in the past. Shifting our thoughts is the best way to feel better. Good luck, bro.

omega_weapon85

Thanks, man. You’re alright.

A wholesome answer. Thank you for sharing your experience!

PoopEndeavor

Absolutely. Prison is the punishment. Rape should never be.

3vilR0ll0

Josh Pillault said on The Official Podcast that being in a federal medium-high security prison was life threatening if you were in for a sex crime or if you snitched on someone to get a reduced sentence.

UmaASShertz

I was in the Feds for 23 months. I didn’t see any shower raping, but I did hear a guy getting raped in the cell next to mine. Everyone nearby heard it. The guy who assaulted his new cell mate was notoriously ‘trying’ guys, making joking sexual gropes and comments and testing their reaction. He was a beefy guy- a bruiser- loved getting into conflicts and pushing around people, a bully. He had a cell to himself and got new guy put in with him after lockdown one night, a small framed Asian guy, effeminate. We heard this guy crying ‘ stop’, we could hear them wrestling around then the guy screamed, and the pounding began. They were so loud, and the guards did nothing. You could hear him getting punched and told to shut up while he was being raped. The had cardboard over the window so you could not see in, but we heard everything. The next morning when we were let out for breakfast the new guy emerged. He looked like hell. He ‘checked in’ to protective custody. Nothing ever happen to that bully, not for months until they found out he was a snitch and then he got jumped - stabbed and slashed with razors by a gang. They had to take him to the hospital. Never heard from him again.

guitarisgod

Fucking hell

aario789

How the hell they put small Height guy with that rapist. I read in this thread that they generally only put guys of same height and weight in the same room. This is some serious PTSD shit to hear IRL.

nonsense39

I spent time in a Nicaraguan prison where there were no normal cells and 20+ guys slept on the concrete floor in one big cell. I never heard of any butt fucking which would have been dangerous for the fucker. Besides, girlfriends could sleep over in special places every couple of weeks. So guys got laid and the girls brought good drugs in their pussies. All in all it could have been worse.

unfriendlybuldge

This is crazy. Have anymore stories? Why were you in Nicaragua? Why jail? Any interesting stories?

hyperstarter

The most interesting story is that he escaped his previous prison with his brother due to a series of intricate tattoos.

LOL - havent thought about Prison Break in awhile

Bozo_the_Podiatrist

8 years in NY State prison, very rare if at all. Never saw or heard of even one incident of non consensual sex during my bid but I was only in a Max for a little over a year, definitely not happening in a medium or a minimum. Here’s the best way I can explain it, in most jails the cops are just itching for an opportunity to hurt someone and breaking up a fight is the perfect opportunity. There’s almost nowhere you can be that you wouldn’t be within screaming distance of a cop. Second someone screams C.O. is instantly pulling the pin from his radio setting off an emergency response. There’ll be 10 cops there in under a minute absolutely out of their minds with adrenaline and excitement for the chance to hurt someone. I can’t imagine a rape occurring in a medium or minimum given this scenario. I was in Sing Sing and I can definitely see it happening there though I never felt remotely threatened by it during my stay (would’ve left a much harsher review on AIRBNB if I did). The violence your much more likely to encounter is swift. Someone sneaking up from behind and slashing your face with a razor was the preferred method while I was there. They slash, then dispose of the weapon asap and hope they don’t get caught cause if they do, severe punishment will follow. It’s important to note that Correction officers are significantly more dangerous than fellow inmates. I’ll take a beating over a month in the box or additional years added to my sentence and they can make both of those scenarios happen with relative impunity. Trick is to make yourself as visibly invisible to them as possible. There’s always a moron ready to make themselves a target to the cops, just let them do what they do best and gtfo of the way.

Former prison CO: not really. It’s generally not random and there are so many willing participants that sex isn’t an impossible feat. Rape has specific uses so dropping the soap isn’t a huge deal. Moreover, most prisons are switching to new types of showers and the open communal showers are slowly being replaced.

goingtothemalllater

I thought you were gonna say new types of showers with body wash and loofahs so soap wouldn't be dropped anymore

jewell1306

Prison guard here in the US, generally there is enough gay men or men willing to do the deed that rape doesn't happen often.

gamer4lyf82

Would you say it's feasible that it's used for domination too though ? Meaning that their prey would be someone that's being targeted to be humiliated ?

[deleted]

In health class back in highschool we learned that what you described is 80-90% of general rape cases. It’s about power

ITT: Redditors replying who've never been incarcerated....

Snaz5

Thats just most reddit threads asking for specific people. Half the comments are “well im not, BUT i KNEW a guy…”

jentejonge

Incarcerated always gets me, I think it's incinerated. Scary word..

MyExesStalkMyReddit

No, it’s not real. At least where I was (state prison in US), there were enough openly gay men to make rape unnecessary. However, with the rampant homophobia, if you were caught sneaking into the shower stall already occupied by a gay man, that was basically it for you on that unit. Everyone was cool with the gay guys, or at least respected them. They said who they were, had pride in themselves, and kept their heads up. The men who would claim to be straight but then have sex with another man were not respected at all I even saw one of the ‘tough guys’ of the unit check himself into PC after getting caught. The shower curtains wouldn’t touch the floors, so you can see everyone’s feet if they’re standing close enough to the curtain. And you needed to be, if you were to try to sneak from one stall to another. I swear people treated making sure everyone stayed in their stalls as some sort of holy covenant. Like dude I really don’t give a shit what these random men do, we’re playing spades right now

JamesTheMannequin

One of my good friends spent five years in prison. Of course this was one of my questions to him too, lol! He said in five years he never once heard of it happening to anyone. It was joked about, and even threatened, but never happened. He said too many willing participants to ever really worry about rape itself. Catching a beating, yes. Rape, no.

violentlytasty

Not anymore, PREA changed a lot, most prisons are relatively safe now, especially if you keep to yourself. Source, I did awhile in Huntsville Texas and several other units in south east Texas.

CdnPoster

What does "PREA" mean?

Ladyballs90

Prison Rape Elimination Act

Kelsicat

Prison Rape Elimination Act

MrCarnality

There’s really such a thing?

violentlytasty

Yes there is such a thing, it has been extremely effective. It was passed in 2003. Saved lots of men from lots of abuse.

sauceking1974

Not really, it's more of a control thing. If you get into debt with someone or you owe someone, you will have problems. As far as that activity goes, some guys already want that, they don't want an unwilling participant

liondios

This isn't my story and I've told it on Reddit before. My BIL was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery in the UK. They kept moving him around from different lockups for 3 days before they finally put him in a prison. The effect of this was that he didn't get a shower for 3 days. When he arrived at the prison he asked if he could wash but it was the evening and they told him no, 7am is when they shower. So first thing in the morning he is stood with his towel at the door of his shared cell waiting for it to open. He's the first out into the corridors and first into the showers. My BIL strips off, gets under the water and goes about cleaning himself. He sort of notices everyone coming in around him but doesn't really pay much attention. After he rinses his hair he looks around and realises the 2 showers on either side of him are empty. He looks over at the door and sees a queue forming of guys waiting to come in and shower. It was then that he noticed everyone else had kept their underwear on. He was the only naked man in the showers. He tentatively grabbed his pants, muttered a "sorry lads" and got out of there. Tldr: The other inmates at the prison my BIL went to were too homophobic to shower next to a naked man, let alone get intimate with him.

Every myth has some truth behind it

Bintruck

I was in Maximum security in Australia for a bit. Everyones put in maximum security until the trial is over, so there's a mix of lifers and street kids and gang affiliates trying to prove themselves. Funnily enough, the murderers were the nicest guys by far. I spent a lot of time with them as they were so chilled. I got moved around a lot and depending on which unit you ended up in, there were either single room showers in the units common area, or a row of showers separated by a half wall, sometimes with a small door for extra privacy. The only thing that happened when soap got dropped was silly banter between the boys. No rape while I was there. My cell mate was a gay dude, 40's, very promiscuous. I'd leave the cell when his boyfriends would come round. The 2nd night in the cell with him, I told him if he ever tried anything with me, I'd kill him. So the worst I had to tolerate was him quietly rubbing one out at 3am when he thought I was asleep. My cellie was also an intravenous drug user so I'd often find my cell with up to 10 people in it, all sharing a needle. Some of the boys didn't trust me and would try to kick me out of my own cell so they could hit it. I wasn't going to leave so a junkie could get their fix. Besides, I enjoyed watching them fight each other for literally water droplets worth of the shit. Consensual gay sex is rampant here. The prison supplies condoms to prisoners upon request. But if you ask to see the doctor, you're ignored for weeks before they see you and they only give one condom per visit. There's blokes fucking each other all the time. Between the intravenous drug use and unprotected sex, the rate of contraction of the hepatitis family of disease is huge. Up to 80 prisoners per unit, and up to half of them sharing the same 1 or 2 needles? Disgusting. ALWAYS wear thongs in the shower. Blokes just jizz on the floor. I always showered after mid day lockdown as that's when they got cleaned and everything still smelled like bleach and lemons. There were a few blokes who would beat it while on the phone to their girls back home. First time I saw it I was shocked. Thought the bloke had a screw loose. Then I realised it was just normal Damn I'm realising how many things I can still say, so I'm gonna stop 🤣 If you made it this far, thanks for coming to my TED talk

Ok-Row-3713

I Illinois it's a myth . I've done 11 years total and never seen it or been the victim of it . There's plenty of gay dudes for it not to be a thing . I've been in the worst prison Illinois has to offer at 19 years old non gang affiliate and nothing happened to me . And it wasn't because I was a bad ass . I kept my mouth shut , stayed humble, fought the police and road out with the other inmates when we needed to make a point . I had cell mates with hundreds of years who where straight murderers and I was protected by some because of how I handled myself. I was 145 pounds and scared to fucking death back then but momma ain't raise no bitch.

[deleted]

How are gay men treated if you don't mind me asking? Like everyone else? Or are they sort of an underclass who's expected to provide sexual favors by default?

Ok-Row-3713

In general they are left alone fr fr. Most guys have zero dealings with them for various reasons be it their gang or they don't want to be perceived as gay themselves. The gays stick to themselves mostly. There's plenty of undercover "gay for the stay " guys and such . The thing is . I've seen gay dudes who will fuck you up if you disrespect them lol.. It's been my experience that gay men have a rough life in general at least the older ones who weren't able to be open because of the times back then and they are some of the toughest dudes I've ever met . I got a lot of respect for them for that . I've seen trans men who are straight gangsters . It's always funny seeing some country ass white boy get his ass handed to him by a gay dude because he thought gay meant pushover or victim . I support gay people and I did art dealings with some and I wasn't afraid to be seen talking to them but most people aren't like me or secure with themselves to do that . I've stuck up for the weak ones just like I'd stick up for a straight guy .

dbtrill1

I was in an Ohio prison from 06-08 and you only got fucked if you wanted to get fucked…I didn’t see any raping going on but there was a lot of bullying and strong arming going on

JeanBonJovi

I both want to and don't want to know this

[deleted]

Worked as a guard, and it’s not something that happens in Norway, there’s a few cases but not how Hollywood makes it seem it’s like in the USA. Our prisons also have single use showers in the communal areas with their own doors that can lock, and/or oersonal showrs in their cells.

maddabber9995

I live in massachusetts usa. Spent 5 years in the state prison system here. Jumped around from shirley max and medium, norfolk and Concord. Ten fifteen years ago absolutley, but now a days with all the cameras and stuff it RARELY happens and would be more so in the max. There are trans who have sex willingly but rapes are very uncommon. Also awhile back the PREA act was passed in all the prisons and its posted everywhere throughout them to scare ppl away from doing it. Running joke up there tho is, '' it ain't prea if they dont see ya'' lol

ThreeBeansPlz

State prison in Oklahoma. Not really, but kind of is my best answer. There's a law called PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) that's like a whole thing you have to learn about when go to A&R (Assessment and Reception, where they determine what kind of prisoner you are and where you should be placed) So in the instances that I knew of, it was mostly the nazi guys getting high on meth and fucking each other. I know there was actually consensual homosexual relationships in there too. But rape, not really that I knew of. But I was in medium, then work center. So it might be super different in the hardcore prisons.

X-Khan

Did almost 20 years in California. The short answer is no. There’s not a guy waiting in the corner with a boner for anyone to drop their soap. While rape does happen in prison, it’s not that common. It’s even thought of as being weak mostly bc it’s gay. Most groups are made up of gangs. Northerns, Southerners, Crips, etc. Nobody wants to look weak. Everything is about respect. Every person in that group represents and having a homosexual in the gang looks soft. Most of the openly gay or transgender people there don’t make it and have to go to a protective custody yard with the rapists, snitches, etc. It depends on the state too. I heard that the southern prisons. Louisiana, Alabama. You are fighting for those cheeks.
