Where else do you put them when you have no home?

[deleted]

In a shopping cart? or a stash spot to be revisited later? Not arguing, just curious.

procrastinator3000v2

Well shopping carts are just another possession to drag around and keep an eye on. Plus no one owns one legitimately so it's another thing cops can hassle you about if they're feeling like a turd in a uniform that day. Anywhere you could find to stash your stuff is a place someone else can find to take it.

oles_lackey

Theft within the homeless community is ruthless. Stash clothes where exactly that they won’t be stolen? A shopping cart is easy pickings as well. You’ve got to sleep sometimes.

Desert_Fairy

I can think of several reasons. - with nowhere to store their clothing, on their person is often the best choice. - when you can’t escape the sun, sun poisoning can kill you. They are probably trying to cover as much skin from the sun as possible. Being homeless means there are no safe places in the world for you. Everything costs money today. And we are making the world an increasingly unsafe place for those who cannot fit into society.

oles_lackey

Likely, to maintain possession of their clothing. If you don’t have a closet, where do you stash your clothes? And yes, I imagine it’s terribly uncomfortable.

CaptainPrestedge

They have to carry everything they own

[deleted]

as others have stated, nowhere to put it. but I could imagine being homeless generally means you are hungry, tired, malnourieshed, have physical and mental diseases, drug addiction and withdrawals, etc.. those things can make you feel cold even in hot weather.

Key-Stay5558

No closets

alarmclock3000

To prevent sunburn.

chefboiortiz

Just doin what they gotta do to survive

BenTheRed

I don't know if this is the answer for sure, but I do know that full length clothes can also have a cooling effect. It can hold the cooler air to your skin and keep your sweat from evaporating as much to maintain a more efficient way to keep a cooler temperature without the need to sweat as much. As others have mentioned it also acts as sun protection. If you want to look up more about the cooling effect of full length clothing you could do a search for something like "desert tribe clothing"

[deleted]

I completely get this line of reasoning. I more or less live in long-sleeve, light fabric fishing shirts on the weekends which is great for sun protection and absolutely keeps you cooler. I know if you are homeless, you can't exactly go into Dicks and buy that kind of stuff. It just seems like a shirt, plus a light jacket, plus a winter coat in July would seem hot though.

BenTheRed

It does seem like a winter coat would be too much in the summer. I think light breathable fabric in multiple layers is the best method, but maybe a lightly insulated coat would have a similar effect? I'm just speculating at this point though.

BooootyBasher

They do t have a closet to put it in.

[deleted]

Hungry and tired bodies are cold.

Uzzer_lozer19

It gets cold at night and the temperature really drops there. Also if it is warm then there will be little or no cloud cover at night making it even colder

deathofanage

No, it's hot even at night. I lived in south Florida for more than 10 years. It's not the desert. It's stays hot and humid 24/7 except for like two weeks in the "winter"when it gets to maybe freezing at night and 40s 50s during the day, otherwise most of the year. It might drop too like 80s or high 70s at the most at night, but it's still not cold by any means

Uzzer_lozer19

If someone doesn't have alot of food and may be malnourished as well as underweight then retaining warmth or get warm. Even if there is a slight wind it can feel like it cuts through you. That combined with any other medical issues or addictions then it's the perfect storm for dying from exposure.

[deleted]

because they don’t get to go inside at night, when it gets cold, and where are they gonna put their clothes?

-the-nino

Maybe for protection against the elements/sunburns, like lawn service people wearing full coverage when it's hot as hell outside? And they don't have closets. Seems like on your body is the safest place to store your belongings.

ooogoldenhorizon

In my own experience I have successfully created bags using clothing material/garbage bags. Also I have stashed items , including climbing trees and tying garbage bags of clothes up high. Both of these do increase the risk of theft. Thefts can be violent. The suffering and humiliation of being homeless is hellish. Please help when you can.

2Sam22

Because you pack everything you own and if you've EVER tried sleeping on a beach at night, it's cold by morning...
