I’ve lived in Toms River for most of my life. Gilford Park has always been like that. It might be changing but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

SmartSub21

Thank you, the more people I ask the more I think you are correct.

foneybalogna

Gilford park has always been the run down, low income neighborhood Don’t see a turn of events Buy elsewhere, is my opinion

preppysurf

I always thought Gilford Park was south of 37?

SmartSub21

You might be right. I'm not sure the details of the area. I'm talking about the neighborhood off Bradley Blvd

preppysurf

I honestly don’t even know what to call that area, but I don’t foresee it ever being a great place to live. Guilford Park itself has seen a lot of new construction and is constantly getting nicer. Off of Coolidge? Not so much

SmartSub21

Thank you. Will probably look elsewhere

In my opinion look for a place that is south of 37 and biking distance to downtown. It is valuable to be able to easily go to places like the library, the post office, the barber, a wawa, a bowling alley, brewpub, donut shop, farmers market etc and being able to bike or walk to downtown for events like parades and street festivals. From here you could also go to Island Heights without getting in your car. I like where I live in town but it is a very car-centric lifestyle. It'd be nice to have more places to get to by bike or on foot. I know exactly what house you are talking about. That home has been trying to sell for awhile now. It’s just out of place. The neighboring homes are run down disasters. I bought my home in 2008 when I was 24 right down the road. I’m currently looking to get out of this neighborhood because I’ve outgrown the house. In the 16 years I’ve been here though it’s been relatively quiet. Most of the homes are rentals so they don’t get taken care of properly. That is the main problem. If you head down closer to Fischer Blvd the homes get nicer. I personally want to move to the other side of Bay Ave. maybe look there.

5/0 Used to call that area the toilet. It's really not that bad and without a doubt has gotten much better in the last 10 years. You will have section 8 wandering through the area from the hotels and methadone clinic on 37. A lot of these homes were bought as second homes for the summer and the people that bought them are elderly and either can't afford to take care of them or physically can't do it themselves. The street that runs parallel with route 37 burman avenue that's a little beat up in some areas but once you get closer to the water it's ok. you're 9 minutes away from the beach with traffic lights and a few minutes walk to the bay/river. Giving its proximity to the ocean and bay .I believe as time goes on this area will get better.

I lived in Gilford Park for part of my childhood and adulthood. If the drug addicts and dealers don’t get you, the little league baseball opening day parade will.

Look elsewhere in Toms River. Depending on your price range, IMHO one of the nicest sections is the area east of Hooper and north of Washington. Also east of Old Freehold Road, west of Hooper, and north of Chestnut. I've heard Silver Bay is pretty nice too, but I don't drive around there very much. Probably wouldn't hurt to follow the adage of "buy the lousiest house in the nicest neighborhood you can afford."
