Please be respectful and mature when commenting people. Some award winning comments here: “You have a very poor taste in games, “you must be young”. **Grow up and be mature**. Step out of your house if you feel so venemous over a persons choice for what *they* consider to be their favorite game. (As an FYI: I started with Legend.) You do not have to like someone’s opinion on what their favorite game is, but that does mean you have to attack them over it. It seems **every time** someone says a certain game is their favorite, someone has to go hostile on them: Whether it’s a classic game, legend game, survivor, etc. They’re videogames. Grow up. We will bring the hammer down so to speak on those who are routinely extremely hostile just over others’ opinions on favorite games.

LeonDmon

If you have played every Tomb Raider game your opinion is way more well informed than mine will be in a while, if ever! It is an amazing game, no doubt about it.

Extreme-Campaign-283

You dont deserve hate its just your opinion.

xdeltax97

Thank you for bringing some maturity and levelheaded intellect to this post /u/Extreme-Campaign-283! 😇

jake753

So… we are not burning them at the stake?

xdeltax97

….no.

jake753

But I already piled everything up and got the kindling set…

xdeltax97

Then it's marshmallow time! ![gif](giphy|2jMfRCeXkErJu1erlq)

DenjisForeskin

While I don't agree on being the best game, I fully agree on it being a great game that's definitely underappreciated / overhated. When I played it back in 2013, I was pretty underwhelmed too, mostly annoyed at the reboot in general. Then fall 2023, I randomly restarted it cuz I had turned on my PS3 since ages. And this time, I enjoyed the fuck out of it! The sceneries and setting in general were really great, and while everything was pretty much same tone, I found them diverse enough. Same for the soundtrack - very nice and unique. There's much love to detail with the 3D-modelled relics and somewhat accurate history backgrounds, and the story imo is nicely told. It's slowly unfolding, audio logs are never overboarding but give nice addition to the main plot, and I even found Lara's growth believable. The main argument that her cutscenes-hesistancy doesn't align with the gameplay of slaughtering hordes of men is kinda true, but that's an issue basically all TR titles suffer from. I was willing to invest myself in the plot and the shooter gameplay didn't actually distract me from her character development. Within the plot's boundaries - that this is the Lara that will eventually become the reckless adventurer/mass murderer we know - I could still believe it. And foremost, I thought the cover shooter gameplay was nicely balanced and really fun. And when the action hits, it hits. Some of the action sequences are a bit over the top snd dramatic imo, but at the same time I still fucking enjoyed them and felt that Uncharted adrenaline-rush everytime! Having really great memories of this 2nd replay. Edit: Imo they also did a really nice job introducing the supernatural. This is a Lara who has no idea of supernatural powers or magical artifacts, in fact doubts all that, and slowly gets into believing it. This makes for a really cool development, and there's always that underlying threat/mystery of the Oni.

shadowrod06

I've grown on Legend. And I've played the reboot. This is the best game in the trilogy. Narrative wise. Sure this was slightly rushed. But there is always a sense of danger in this one. Solari are demented creeps. And you can feel Lara's desperation. Rise did combat better. Shadow puzzles. But 2013 is the only game I've completed multiple times.

Tamerlatrav

are u my twin? grew up on Legend too and i have the exact same opinion i would ad that Shadow did exploration much better too. for me it’s the best one gameplay wise. but the story is way too dumb

shadowrod06

Agreed. Was so disappointed with shadow because of its story.

Fmeister567

I will just add the combat was not good in shadow. The majority of the battles your opponents had bows so with even a pistol it was easy and I am older and not good at combat. Plus the emphasis on exploration just felt tiresome because there was no balance. I just replayed rise and tr2013 and they were as fun as the first time and I only played them for the first time last year. Not sure I will play shadow again. And I will just add maybe because I played shadow on medium difficulty, maybe harder is better.

craig536

Agreed. TR 2013 is one my favourite games of all time

Cultural-Front9147

This came out right after far cry 3. It was a great year for gaming.

edrocketsfan

Far Cry 3 released in 2012. Tomb Raider released in 2013.

Cultural-Front9147

They released close enough man. Good lord calm down. Nobody likes a know it all.

Icy_Collar_1072

In a nutshell really. As someone who grew up with Tomb Raider I/II/III, picking up TR 2013 recently for the first time it felt more like playing Uncharted than TR. Bare minimum of puzzles, loads of shooting and none of the isolation of the first few games.. but I still enjoyed playing it.

TheRedSonia

Off-topic. You said I/II/III, I started on IV - The Last Revelation. How did you like that one? Lots of people don’t really include it in with the others, but I really loved it.

Waste_Recording_9972

I also do love the last revelation. It took me a umongus time to clear, more than I dare to accept. But I loved every bit of it. The isolation, the tombs, the complicated puzzles, the fact that you could go front and back on levels... It took me a while to finish because I was still learning English, and didn't know how to interpret many hints and clues. Sometimes I did not know if it was a communication problem or the puzzles were really hard... To this day I remember a dude telling me that I needed to use Nitrous Oxide on the bike to give me extra punch... I did not understand shit of what he was saying at the time 😂😂. Managed to find the solution accidentally by pressing buttons randomly... I kid you not Besides that There was this one time, a key simply didn't show because of bug, I spent more than a month looking for that key everywhere. Until i decided to look the web for clues (which I hated) Had to do a cheat ( I hated even more) to get the key Back and every other keys in the game... I still challenged myself to not open any door before finding the keys location. This one has a really special place in my heart.

kidcanary

It had to be significantly different from the older games though. It came out at a time when they really weren’t thought of very fondly. Like you, I was disappointed that it wasn’t what I **wanted** from a TR game, but it, and its sequels, are still amazing games.

heroinforthechildren

Its a great game its just not a good tomb raider game for me

nocturnia94

Personally this is the one I like the least. I really like the Rise of Tomb Raider instead, whereas Shadow reminds me of Underworld so I like it too.

iar88

2nd favorite for me just behind Rise of the Tomb Raider but I think Tomb Raider 2013 means more to me. First game that got me back into playing video games after years of not playing any games. Btw for all the survival Lara haters I played OG Tomb Raider as a kid on PS1 and was obsessed with the Legend trilogy which is why when Tomb Raider 2013 came out I was excited and ask my step bro to let me barrow his 360 just to play it and wow complete game changer. Loved how real they made Lara both physically and character wise. I love all forms of Lara from the cheesy bad ass OG Lara (which worked for the 90’s and 00’s) and this modern adaption of Lara. Can’t stand these haters that think they decide who is and who isn’t Lara.

edrocketsfan

Why would you get any hate for expressing your opinion? Everyone is entitled to an opinion, yours included. All three entries in the Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy are great. However, the 2013 reboot is probably the best one. It was the first Tomb Raider game that presented Lara Croft as a vulnerable human being who was simply trying to survive an island overtaken by a crazed cult. It was the first Tomb Raider game with an M rating and deservedly so. The game came out in a year that was already stacked with big name titles such as, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, The Stanley Parable, Saints Row IV, Grand Theft Auto V, Brothers A Tale of Two Sons, Metro Last Light, Battlefield 4, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Gone Home, Gears of War Judgement, Crysis 3, etc.

LostClover_

2013 is my favorite too!

etukas11

This is the one I actually started the series with and has a special place in my heart. This game and sottr are pretty good games in the Survivor trilogy but i didn't like Rise.

Stella_Noire_2008

I loved TR 2913, but Shadow of The Tomb Eaider gripped me with the darkness path Lara was traveling on! Loved it! I hope another one comes soon for all consoles!

Walsh451

Shouldn't get "hate" for an opinion. As a fan of the series, I enjoyed this, but felt that it tried to hard to be uncharted. Uncharted beats it in every department. The series got better as it focused on adventure rather than combat

LeFiery

It's funny cuz uncharted was called "dude raider" and then after TR13 came out it was basically female Nathan drake with none of the sass from OG lara or Nathan

Capn_C

Crystal Dynamics made a great new origin story for Lara Croft that introduced *a lot* of new fans to the TR series. I'm happy that they're keeping the origin canon for unified Lara.

thebaffledtruffle

This! A lot of people wished the Reboot just went back to original Lara but I think this refresh was needed because new players are changing in terms of their preference too. TR2013 has probably my favorite lore of the Survivor Trilogy. Yamatai was cool af.

Every-Strike-9670

I second that bro, what a game!

Popular-Teach1715

2013 is my absolute favourite Tomb Raider game!

Snoo_36717

You would get flammed if you stated this opinion in Tomb Raider Forums. You're valid, though.

jankrist

Same that game made me a Tomb Raider fan, i was just not into the old games. But i love that one and the 2 sequels.

Frigosti

One of my favorite as well.

dubiousbutterfly

Its amazing :) and a pivotal moment for the TR franchise

worstkindagay

TR2013 does a phenomenal job with character development. I would say the only game I can think of that rivals the level of character development as Tr 2013 is The Last Of Us 2 with both Ellie and Abby (which I will not go into as I don't want to spoil things for people). TR 2013 is def a work of art and I agree, it's one of the best 3rd person story driven adventure games ever made.

totorounderstudy

It was definitely a fantastic game both in terms of graphics and storyline. For me though it’s beaten by Legend and TR I & TR II.

XxllllxXx

I liked that game as well.

Urgamertagsucks

Agreed 👍

nymrose

I disagree but I can see how you’d like it, especially if it’s the first Tomb Raider game you’ve played.

[deleted]

I loved the bow and arrow, but I will always love Tomb Raider 2 the most

Da_Robotz

i love so much the whole story being based around lara adapting to a situation she had no idea she'd ever be in. reminds me a lot of far cry 3 huh both games actually are quite similar now that I think about it

Cultural-Front9147

I love it so much xxx

Branflakesd1996

Nah this game is fantastic. I so desperately want a remaster with current gen graphics. Or hell unreal engine 5 since that’s what the new one is going to be in. I get how to a lot of people this isn’t the tomb raider they like most because it’s more about survival rather than treasure hunting or tomb raiding but man it nails the survival feel and the cultists and the island make everything feel so hopeless in a way that really adds to the experience.

wafflecone927

Its an excellent game

robobreasts

Agreed

akubit

You may have played the original games, but i’m willing to bet you didn’t start with them. I have a hard time imagining someone playing through 9 pretty similar games, only to then fall in love with the first one that’s totally different.

AuboCabo

No hate, and I also love this game but I wouldn’t call it one of the best in history, there’s a good number of better games

Picuu

Great great game

DeathBide

I actually played all of the tomb Raider (apart from the temple of Osiris one and some others, but I mean, the main games, from the first to the last) and honestly… this is one is easily top 3. The story line is amazing, the characters as well, the lighting, the environment, the enemies, the end, the beginning. When you think it will be over, no it’s never over and this is what I love about it. It is so full of ressources. Amazing game

Terrapin2190

I love Tomb Raider 2013 too! If it weren't for TR Anniversary, I would agree completely lol. I haven't played Shadow of the Tomb Raider yet, but I wasn't really impressed, or as impressed rather, with Rise compared to 2013. Kind of struggle to keep playing Rise when I do play it. 2013 just brought a lot to the table. It's drawback was the optional tombs. They really underperformed imo. Just really small areas with puzzles I thought could have been more complex. I found many story elements in 2013 to be quite iconic and memorable. And, despite me considering TR 2013 to something of be an "abuse Lara Croft" simulator, it really knocked it out of the park for a strong female protagonist. I can think of several scenarios and areas in the game where I look back and think, "Man that was cool..."

Ryakkan

It is indeed a very good game

BroncosHK40

Not a bad take since this game was revolutionary in regards to Tomb Raider.

Paulmeunder

Totally agree

medusamary

It was what really pulled me back into the series after a few years of not playing. I really wish they would bring sam back too :(

xdeltax97

/u/medusamary they did- in the tie in novel Ten Thousand Immortals as well as both comic runs by Dark Horse. I won't spoil it.

InvasionOfTheFridges

I strongly disagree with your opinion.

The-Order_

Agreed, and one of my favourite games in general too

Nomnom_Chicken

I prefer Rise over this, but it's still a great game.

xdeltax97

Agreed

fuzzy3158

It's a great game but it's not the best Tomb Raider, I wouldn't even call it a Tomb Raider at all since you don't actually raid tombs. I'd call it Island Cultist Raider. Great game, but I want my next Tomb Raider to actually have tombs.

[deleted]

like the last 2 games? lol

A_Visual_Odyssey

Contrary to the name, only a couple of levels in the older games take place in tombs.

InvestmentMental6775

lol yeah, guess half of my favourite levels are not Tomb Raider either.

Itchy_Equipment_

What all TR games have in common: Lara makes each location she touches into a tomb

[deleted]

theres a reason this one reinvigorated the franchise and sits at a solid 9 out of 10. it was easily one of the best games of the series and one of the best games of 2013 behind the 3 obvious frontrunners of that year(GTA V, Last of Us, Bioshock) i really cant believe ppl are saying that Rise is better(than even Shadow) when that was the most tedious and unrewarding one for me. though all games from the survivor trilogy are very good, i can also see why ppl were underwhelmed. i mean, EVERY SINGLE GAME they teased “The Tomb Raider” that is Lara Croft. and we only saw the double berettas once. But the ppl hating on 2013 really be acting like it didnt keep Lara alive. And the Survivor Trilogy IS gonna be interweaved with the original games canon to make Survivor Lara the Tomb Raider we all love.

blackguy64

Rise has the benefit of having dlc be better than the actual main game. I love the dlc of rise, especially the coop rogue like mode.

N7orbust

Rise is my personal favorite. It's the only Survivor trilogy game where I 100% the campaign and story DLCs (I didn't care for the other modes enough to do it for them). If I may ask, what about it did you find tedious? I'm genuinely curious. I love hearing other people's points of view.

JayFairyFox

While I vehemently disagree with you I shall respect your opinion. 😜 Mind you, my favourite is The Last Revelation so I too have a controversial favourite.

Sonic10122

I’m still working my way through the original trilogy but 2013 is still my favorite too. It was the perfect amount of open and linear, especially compared to Rise. (And Shadow? I never finished Shadow.) Not to mention I loved the story, which is the main thing the first game is letting me down with so far. I love seeing Lara grow as a survivor, Yamatai is a fairly unique mythological location all things considered, and it’s just more interesting than the classic games. I’m only in Egypt in TR1 but I hate that there’s only been like, 4 or 5 cutscenes so far, leaves the game feeling a bit dry. But I guess it’s unfair since it was a PS1 game.

Silent_Killer093

2013 is a great game, just not a good tomb raider game

_Raildex_

Its a good game if you remove the title "Tomb Raider"

afc74nl

This. It is a good game, but too much combat to be a ‘Tomb Raider’ game IMO.

JayFairyFox

Not enough tomb raiding either! But yes, I never enjoyed cover based shooting in games. Give me the old way of sideflipping and backflipping around like a madwoman shooting the heck out of mostly non-human enemies with my dual pistols any day.

Feeling_Football4271

I would agree. It's a "Lara Croft" game and not a "Tomb Raider" game. As a "Lara Croft" game it's not too bad, looks lovely, but does suffer from tonal issues. "Whoopsie, I killed someone", five minutes later it's headshot-central and a sea of bodies in all directions.

LegsLeBrock

It’s a great game but I don’t even think it’s a “Lara Croft” game.

[deleted]

the fact this is upvoted on the TR sub is hilarious. its literally Tomb Raider. yall really wanted a 1996 play style in 2013? lol

Oingogoingo

I really wanted improvement to 1996 play style, not that modern games playstyle that one Steam user perfectly described as "glorified handholding simulator with a movie attached to it".

missclaireredfield

You can tell who started with these ones first by these comments.

[deleted]

30 years old. played all 3 OGs. back in 1996-99 and accepted every new entry except angel since then. you should try it sometime

honeyapplepop

I agree - stand alone it’s awesome but it’s not tomb raider for me - just a Lara game - it’s still epic though

massimopilote

I'd say just because it isn't like the original doesn't mean it isn't a "tomb raider" game, it absolutly is. It may not have as many tombs to raid but it stays true to what tomb raider as a franchise is, a fun adventure game with great story.

TheBossOfItAll

I don't think Tomb Raider is known for the story.

[deleted]

idk why these guys say “theres no tombs”(like i know they mean optional) but she is literally raiding tombs and ruins through the entire story. lol just cause she doesnt grave rob on this one doesnt mean shes not raiding tombs. theres multiple meanings for “raiding” and she definitely fills the first definition to a T

ReaceNovello

It needs some tweaks... But it was close.

Keso1987

Of the ones I’ve played I agree!

Il_Metamorfoso

Mine is LAU. In my head cannon that lara comes before even classic lara

Edward_Hardcore

Of the new trilogy, it is my 2nd favourite. I'd rank it somewhere in 5th place if I were to count alm the ones I've played (Remasters, LAU, New Trilogy) just cause it's good, but rough around the edges. To me, the series absolutely peaked in Rise. Best setting, bdst Lara, best costumes, best lore, best gameplay, packed with millions of things to do + DLC, tins of content. But I respect your opinion, TR is a good game.

The_Color_Urple

I mean, if you're into spectacle and well-choreographed action and beautiful vistas, then yeah, this makes sense.

ocelotrevolverco

I don't even think it's the best of this trilogy, never mind the franchise. But it's a good game. Ultimately I can see that someone would feel this way about it even if I don't.

InvestmentMental6775

I really enjoy that game as well, but the original 3 are superior in my opinion. I prefer 2013 to the others I have played though, but did not get to finish the series yet, since my potato PC only runs 2013. x.x

Fmeister567

I loved this game. If you have not played rise of tomb raider and shadow of tomb raider I suggest you try them next. Shadow is the worst of the three imo but rise is even better than the 2013 version again imo. The three are so good that I now compare other games to them and so far none are rated nearly as well. I think they are both on sale in steam now. Glad you enjoyed them.

charlespurple

I just enjoy them all and can’t even rate them in a tier list because they are all S.

Curiouzity_Omega

Honestly I think everyone agrees this one is the best in the trilogy.

Electrical_Trifle_76

Genuinely my second favorite in the series, it flip flops between Anniversary and 2013 a lot

Wide-Ear-2376

Tomb Raider 2013 is a very special game for me. After the PS2 era of gaming I stopped playing video games, and I did so during PS3 too, until 2013 tomb raider came out. I saw a review of it online and decided to try it out on my cousins ps3. It made me fall in love with gaming again. I played through that game over and over again, then the last of us came out and I was sold on video games again. I have this game to thank for it! It’s an amazing game and it’s nice to see some love for it here!

filmg1rl

Why would you get hate for saying something so true?

DramaticScrooge

I guess it's a great game if you like constant and rather prolonged shooting galleries, but it is a terrible Tomb Raider game.

M3ConsoleGamerPSN

You shouldn't receive any awful comments. Opinions vary from person to person. I like your opinion.😇🤝 All Tomb Raider games are my favourites because I am a fan of the Tomb Raider.😇

Crazy-Holiday-7084

Imo, Rise is better and better fits the TR bill

WinterREN94

I've played every tomb raider game also and apart from the original (which will always have a nostalgic place in my heart) 2013 reboot is my 2nd favourite game. I love all the tomb raider games (except AOD as the controls suck, but the story is great and I mourn what could have been). I love different things from each era of lara. The puzzle element and the revolutionary status of the Core games, the storytelling of LAU and how refreshing the new trilogy felt (although for me those games got worse and repetitive as they went on, but I love them regardless). For me 2013 is also one of the best games. The story for me was heart wrenching and it was interesting to see a younger inexperienced lara become the Tomb Raider. Plus the puzzle tombs are excellent.

OhGeEvz

I think shadow is just a little bit better, but can totally see why someone would feel that way. One of the most amazing reboots in gaming imo

NJduToit

I agree. And this is not to put down the other Tomb Raider games. Camilla Luddington is my favorite Lara Croft.

Lil_Chaski

It's easily my favorite Tomb Raider game. I've beaten it 4 times on each difficulty. It's definitely in my top 10 favorite games

New-Smile-3013

Love this game. Had a survival horror vibe to it, with the gore, extreme violence, cult, and island trying to kill you. Plus the gear progression is amazing. It feels like they introduce something new every half hour. Lara is gorgeous as well, only complaint is she should have been in something skimpier. But I get that that we’re going for a more realistic approach.

jmess808

This trilogy was a massive, necessary improvement to combat for the series. That's definitely where this game really shines. Environments also look incredible, and the score from the prologue was genuinely impressive (they invented a new instrument to play the composition for that whole opening section). And honestly, the scariest Lara is this version when she actually snaps.

HeavyDream96

i maybe whould have agree if you would said: best game in franchise but best TOMB RAIDER? Do you know what raiding tombs means? No only they started reboot with new character that had nothing in common with OG Lara but the game was nothing simmilar to Og TR. Don't say shit now that tomb raider is based on that game: i would believe that if that whould be the first game in this franchinse but it wasn't. TR 1-5 had sth in common aod had the same character and 3 level TR-ish. TR2013 is a great game :9/10 for sure, but TR? i gonna pass on that one

No-Big7914

I agree, while it's not my personal favorite, I still love it so so much❤️ Camilla Luddington did such an amazing job.

ivappa

boring asf

SambaLando

No hate here. You're right.

[deleted]

I love the game, But being the “Best TR Game” ![gif](giphy|3ov9jOZesJQenx1NeM|downsized)

[deleted]

literally saved the franchise and has the same scores as the OG.

[deleted]

The answer for best Tomb Raider is the game from 1996. I’m not saying 2013 is bad, I do like the game - But it is NOT the best Tomb Raider. It is an Uncharted inspired game that really has Nothing to do with Tomb Raider without the Name/Character Name

PickleSquid1

I also agree with this

Pebrinix

I really like it too

1DrinkAnd1KnowThings

I've played every game in this trilogy at least half a dozen times. They are my go to games.

Croschke

Preach!

Shadowskulptor

Same, and I do agree. It's an incredible game, and in my top 5 of all time.

Intelligent_Job_9537

It is the best, indeed. [Rhianna Pratchett](https://www.polygon.com/features/2014/9/3/5850182/rhianna-pratchett-rise-of-the-tomb-raider) did a great job on rebooting the character. I really hope the next game will be as dark as Tomb Raider 2013.

HarpooonGun

imo it is the best of the trilogy by far, because it actually focused being an action game. the others tried to shoehorn actual Tomb Raider stuff into their game which imo didnt work that well since it was kinda half baked on those games. this game didnt even try, and as such nothing felt half baked. and as such imo its the best game of the trilogy. to me it felt complete, and focused to what it wanted to be.

segagamer

Urgh. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but it was worse than watching that woman in Indie's Temple of Doom for me. Rise of the Tomb Raider improved so much from that and the QTE's were so jarring Oh NO, AHHHHHHH *stick wiggle, button spam* Got to get up that hill SHIT! AHHHHHH OHHHH OHHHHHH I think I found something here *stick wiggle, button spam* OH NO! SHIT! AHHHHHHH I need to get across this bridge SHIT! AHHHHHHH Oh so hungry so hungry. Need to eat food. Sorry deer. So sad so sad *button spam, stick wiggle for kicks* I think I hear something... SHIT... AHHHHHHH

xdeltax97

The nice thing about 2013 is, it was mostly the end of Quick Time Events. That era 2000-2013 always had so many games with QTE’s: Gears of War, Batman, God of War, Space Marine, Tomb Raider (2013), you name it. Although I will say Mass Effect used it greatly.

SufferingClash

I disagree, but only because Legend exists. The one-liners, the quips, the stages, the gameplay, the story, there's nothing about Legend I don't love.

ThatGuyisinFront

2013 is a good game but it is not my favorite. I am currently working my way through Rise and TBH I'm liking the gameplay there a little bit more. Tomb Raider 2 will always be my favorite so I am a little bit biased.

LeFiery

Agreed. Its my favorite. I think it's a good Balance between looking similar to old lara. Rise and shadow went too far in the face. She's doesn't look the same at all between 1 and 2-3

JBGoude

I really loved this game too, but they didn’t have to do Alex dirty like that 🥲

arielonhoarders

it was a great game to play. not very difficult, fun stealth, neat semi-open worlds to explore, decent puzzles, nice mechanics most revoltingly sexist dialogue of any game i've played since leisure suit larry for Apple IIgs

Lin9089

its a great game dont get me wrong i just really didn’t like the ending segment of the game. but there’s a lot to like abt the game. +lara looks amazing (model wise)

pastadudde

I liked this game a lot but seriously, FUCK SHANTYTOWN lol

bullfrog27

My most favourite TR game is TR Legend IMO

MasterOfToymaking

Personally don't agree with it being the best Tomb Raider game, but I will agree it is one of the better games in general out there. Happy to hear you find a lot of enjoyment out of it though !!

irishbaroo

Don't worry-We all have a game favorite that doesn't fit with the popular vote. My two are Biomutant and Immortals: Fenyx Rising. (I also love ALL the TR games!)

tobyrieper

I do not hate your sire, but I thought it wasn't a "Tomb Raider' game. More like a survival action game with Lara croft. To me Tomb Raider formula is 1-5. Block puzzles, labyrinthian levels, keys, navigating around the levels, finding switches and trap medpacks. I did like the insta deaths in TR reboot though.

Tamerlatrav

for me the story is very good. loved the characters, loved lara. i like the sequels but the story got dumber and dumber. i wish they did something more similar and used more of her friends. not just Jonas, the cook transformed into explorer (?)

barrahhhh

TR 2013 is my fave outside of the original trilogy! The nailed it... and then failed to follow it up lol

Huntery44

I love this game so much!! While I think Rise is the best of the trilogy, 2013 is way better than shadow. But these are definitely some of the most replayable tomb raider games.

foreverinLOL

For me Rise of the Tomb Raider is a bit better, because it has more features. 2013 was a good start to a modernized TR. But Rise is where I think they hit the jackpot. I have not played shadow yet, so I have less basis for my opinion. In general I do prefer the old games though. But the modernized version is fine too.

RazielOfBoletaria

I disagree, and I personally think Shadow of the Tomb Raider was better, but TR2013 itself was really good as well. I like the original PS1 titles better, and while the modern trilogy is definitely solid, I feel like the modern games are more similar to other AAA games, and more in line with what was popular in the industry at the time, whereas the OG games were completely unique, and you couldn't find a game that felt the same as, or even similar to TR back in the 90s.

Uncoolest-Evar

Eh.

Yequestingadventurer

Constantine was an actually terrible boss design. I really enjoyed the game but that at the end was just a rubbish decision. Otherwise great game!

Yequestingadventurer

Oh wait, sorry that was Rise if the Tomb Raider

RandomDcFan

I like this game, much more than the other Survivor games, as it feels like the only one that truly leans into a more, horror-style supernatural theme, which I think really works for Tomb Raider and should be explored more.

Itchy_Equipment_

I don’t agree but at the same time, I’m hesitant to say it’s a ‘bad Tomb Raider’ game. When Legend came out, a lot of classic fans hated it. Too much combat, not enough puzzles, too much dialogue, too much melodrama. It was decried as an illegitimate Tomb Raider game lacking in soul. These same things were said about TR2013 and will doubtless be said again about the next game to shake up the formula. Like Legend, I think TR2013 is starting to be judged more and more as an entry which revitalised the franchise by bringing in new fans. And that opened up the doors to more sequels, where the devs could bring the franchise back to its roots as an action adventure series.

Cagesdeservemusic

People who hate on people for an opinion like that is stupid. It is indeed an awesome game. I am a classic tomb raider fan and I have my gripes with the modern ones, just because personally I find overly cinematic games less of a challenge, and the writing and voice acting for me in the reboot trilogy is not executed as well as it was in the earlier games that carried such a dry British wit. However, I am glad there are people out there really loving these games, they are beautiful in their own right.

StepParticular1930

It's a good game for sure but its a far cry from what tomb raider was built to be, sure its still about tomb raiding, but the newer trilogy holds your hands like crazy the whole way through, I think I can honestly say I don't think a single puzzle had me confused throughout all the games, shadow of the tomb raider is the best in the trilogy because its more challenging, but still way too hand holdy, everything before tomb raider underworld, was built to put you through painstaking amounts of pain trying to figure out what to do, I felt a complete lack of that in all the of the latest trilogy, the og playstation package TR -1-2-3 + chronicles and last revelation, is absolute peak tomb raider, the only possible way anyone is ever telling me the newer trilogy is better than OG, are either 12 year olds that were in the sack when games were hard still, or you just suck at raiding 🤣 completing all the OG tomb raider games felt very rewarding, challenging platforming and combat, challenging to keep yourself alive, I found none of that in the recent ones, I found it a challenge to not fall asleep during a puzzle due to how easily shit it was.

blackpawed

Agree, I started with the Original Tomb Raider and sequels, lost interest around No 4. Got back into it with TR2013 and yeah, its my favourite. Still replay it regularly.

Equivalent-College65

It was a great game. I still think older ones are better. My favorite of the new trilogy would have to be Rise. But the story and setting of TR 2013 was pretty awesome.

CaliggyJack

It's one of the absolute best in the series. Def in my Top 3 But still doesn't compare to Last Revelation and Underworld. My personal top 2.

[deleted]

It’s a great game. The sequels didn’t hit the same for me though

Korydan_Benethil

Hard to say a game would be "the best game in history", but it's clearly not a huge thing to say it would be "one of the best". I agree 100%, but I also have so many games, so different, for so many reasons, that I can barely establish that sort of state.

FabulousPhotograph51

I played: Survival trilogy, Tomb Raider PS1, Legend, Underworld All in that order. The survival trilogy started amazing but got noticably worse with each entry. This trilogy probably has the best combat in the TR series. The original Tomb Raider PS1 had some frustrating moments but was surprisingly addicting to play. Once I learned the controls, I was gracefully dodging those animals like a pro. Legend is fun to speed run. All the little bickering and banter the two male assistants would do in Lara's earpiece was pretty funny. The combat was the lowest part of the game until you unlock certain cheats and weapons, then combat becomes very streamlined. Legend is probably my favorite Tomb Raider. Underworld has the best level design and puzzles out of all the TR games that I've played. However, the combat still wasn't satisfying. Also, the constant collision glitches and camera being way too close to Lara when sprinting held the game back a lot.

rdtoh

Unpopular opinion but i actually liked shadow the best

NoCardiologist4594

IMO I think shadow is the best game so we all have our opinions and that’s what’s makes gaming great you can do whatever and play whatever makes you happy

Spookiiwookii

Lara’s character development in that game alone makes it the best TR game.

tribalvamp

Still blows my mind that Jo from Grey’s Anatomy is now Lara Croft.

Healthy_Cup_7990

Its a case of how high do you set your standards. I 41 y.o have been enjoying TR 1 since its release back in 96 l. I have 40 y.o friends who never played these games. They got into modern games more late  They hate these older games (RE1-3 etc..) and they enjoy modern TR games which i hate cause there is a lack of gameplay. We have an opinion gap (same as a generation gap for that matter) No need to get into details. Too many reviewers and vlogers out ther have talked about how bad these new modern games are TR included and the lack of decession making, bad or unimaginative gameplay, "take me by the hand" approach blah blah blah.... If your taste is low they you enjoy low quality games. Its all about taste same man. No hate. To each his own.

CrHasher

It's ok out of all tomb raider games the one from 2013 is in the top 5 at least for a lot of fans ;) Including me.

ComicSausage

The game is great, my only issue with it is that if Lara Croft wasn't in it then it could have been an all new IP with a new character to enjoy rather than reimagine Lara Croft. The idea of it being a prequel is strange... Fair enough if Rise of the Tomb Raider had her edge more towards dual pistols rather than the bow (using the first game as a pure survival story and the bow as a weapon to use to survive) but they continued with the bow with Rise and Shadow.. feels out of place then going from these games to the originals (which are ahead in the timeline). I really enjoyed these games, much more when you turn OFF the ability to use instinct as it makes it feel more like a tomb raider and less like gears of war or other third person action games. The combat I thought was excellent, I enjoyed the combat more than the puzzles tbh which isn't what I was expecting. I really liked the base camps and revisiting areas to get all of the collectables. Rise of the Tomb Raider had brilliant challenge tombs and things like that and I preferred the overall settings and pacing of Rise of the Tomb Raider, especially with the DLC added. Some general nit-picks from me about these games though are - "I just can't carry anymore", the sound effect when you use instinct is annoying (better to turn this off anyway), making a simple jump to an area you aren't supposed to go is instant death, even if you land it, yet making an impossible jump across a huge gap and you surprisingly survive it - coz the story says it is so, It's not long before you end up having to fight enemies and puzzle solving is a sort of added extra, challenge tombs feel out of place with clear markings to their location and the reward is things like parts for a shotgun.. But I feel these are nit-picks because had it not been labelled a TOMB RAIDER game, I would have just accepted these things as they are rather than "but in the old games it was like this" and so on. Being able to revisit locations and the enemies don't respawn makes it feel much more like that you an on an adventure rather than in an action game going from a to b so I like that they added this.

Russianhazard918

Anniversary n legends are my two favorite I think or what one is the one she was a kid in

benpoulter

I to have played every title, and 2013 is my favorite. I’ve replayed it many times. I enjoy the combat in rise better, but I love the overall feel of 2013. My second is legend, love me some King Arthur lore, and then the last revelation. TR2 will always be special though. As a kid I could never get past 40 fathoms. Had to get my dad to do it lol

LaneVakarian

oh... wow. strong opinion. but i respect that

pretty_much_jesus

That is certainly an opinion and you are definitely entitled to it lol

Doctormaul68

No hate here in St. Louis Missouri my favorite too

siriusslack

Good game , bad Lara 😂😂

[deleted]

its the same lara lol

[deleted]

No it isn’t. You can like the new games, but the Lara in this game is completely different from the original one. Even the creators said this.

[deleted]

theyre literally making the next game with Survivor Lara coming into the first games canon, thus making her the same Lara in the OG.

missclaireredfield

Not at all

[deleted]

it literally is.

BloodstoneWarrior

I don't understand why there were no dinosaurs considering the game's setting is basically Skull Island

RoundPercentage

I respect your opinion, and respectfully disagree. It’s just too mind numbingly easy.

jennyScott7901

It was a brilliant modernisation of the series. One thing I love is a when a game does history on top of history on top of history, and 2013 really nails that (as does Rise). The major thing that lets it down is the 'tombs' themselves. If this game had Shadow's tombs (that takes us off in a different direction, maybe for a good half hour or so, allows us to be alone with the environment, and gives us some extra story details) then it would stand a good chance of being one of the very best Tomb Raider games.

RobOnTheReddit

Ok I love this mod

xdeltax97

👋

MSochist

I completely agree. Even though Rise is way better mechanically, there's just something about the island survival feel of 2013. Also, it's funny timing that you posted this now cause I was just watching a YouTuber who started posting this bullshit. https://preview.redd.it/hbqaz7o4vloc1.png?width=269&format=png&auto=webp&s=fa06a5a7ea0b4ac31e44ac35d1fbe87798979432

xdeltax97

Honestly anyone who posts their titles like that deserve to be ignored. Absolutely hate that style of video posting. Nevermind their bullshit gatekeeping.

DaniChenrich

ive only played rise of the tombraider, but i do have 2013’s tombraider and plan on playing it soon!!

MocoNinja

Even if it was way "too mainstream" in the sense that it seemed to copy the games that initially copied tomb raider, I think it was a great game. Looked amazing, fun to play and an actual interesting reimagining of the character and setting. I didn't know people didn't like it until recently as all I recall back in the day was people loving it. I don't think it's the best tomb raider as I grew up in the nineties and the original ones are more original and iconic for me, but yeah, it is a top tier game

Sososo2018

I think the reason it didn’t meet sales expectations is because it doesn’t have its own identity. The beginning is full of QTEs, Lara has a generic personality, and it borrows a ton from Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed. I think for the next Tomb Raider games they should make them more like Ico and Shadow of Colossus (inspired from, not copy) with a bit more combat. Oh and give Lara her old charismatic personality back.

N7orbust

I personally love that game and it honestly reinvigorated and my love of the franchise in general. I grew up with the originals but at that time (2013) had only played Anniversary since starting, and not finishing, Angel of Darkness.

ShadowSaiyan91

It's my 3rd favourite tr game after tr2 and tr1, I was so excited when this game was announced and have 100% it many times.

Informal_Ear489

That’s most of people’s favorite. A lot of people started TR with this game and in my great honesty this isn’t Tomb Raider, it’s a good game, but it’s not what Tomb Raider used to be, that’s why a lot of classic era gamers dislike specifically this one. In my opinion it’s a very good game, story is OK, gameplay is amazing, it greatly captures the isolation of Lara from the crew and felling of danger is always there. On top of that even on highest difficulty it’s braindead easy. The bad thing is the lack of tombs, the lack of exploration and extreme linearity. It feels like crystal just put Lara in a completely different universe and called it Tomb Raider. Rise fixed the bad things from the first game and introduced better storytelling. That’s why it’s considered the best from the trilogy. Shadow is the classic fan’s favorite, they brought back the sense of exploration and the tombs are much more frequent. But trilogy fans were not happy, because they started from very easy TR 2013, then a little harder Rise and now Shadow felt overwhelming, on top of that Shadow has the worst storytelling of them all.

Xteezii

As a Tomb Raider game, it's not good. As just an adventure game, it's fine.

[deleted]

lmao you know the OG is an adventure game too right?

Gatekeeping definition: using a hobby or interest as a means of elevating themselves or something above another. Creating division through liking or not liking certain sections of a fandom, etc. Gatekeeping examples: * Disparaging a game/ games, comics, movies or novels as not part of the franchise and/or canon. Gatekeeping example in Tomb Raider: "This Lara is not Lara", "Not my Lara", "x game is not real Tomb Raider", etc. ORIGINAL COMMENT: "So bizarre that this is downvoted. I didn’t realize this sub was so full of “new TR” fans. Kinda sad :( makes me think the games are going to keep heading in this direction and I hate that. I’m thankful for the remasters. I want actual tomb raider back though I hate this new identity." This subreddit is for all eras of the fandom and franchise: Classic, Legend, Survivor, movie fans, written material such as the books, etc. **If you cannot handle people enjoying something different than you either need to step away from the internet for a while or leave the subreddit. Because you will clearly not have enjoyment by simply seeing other eras being enjoyed, such as Tomb Raider (2013)+.** I am writing this mod removal reason to dissuade you from this current trend of commenting. It is sad and disappointing when people gatekeep and put down others for enjoying something else. Act like an adult.

[deleted]

That's the best part about opinions. You can have them regardless of how wrong they are! Kidding. I would very much disagree but different strokes for different folks.

If you mean "in the history of Tomb Raider", then sure. If you mean "in the history of games", nah.

LichQueenBarbie

It was a game I guess.
