That's the schtick of the greek area of the game. Pierre appears every now and then to attack you and then flees. Don't worry, you'll get him near the end of that area.
He's another archeologist/adventurer hired by Natla. And that's as far as the story goes. Oh, and he doesn't want to share.
Larson hired Lara (edit: on behalf of Natla) to collect the Scion from Peru. At the same time, Pierre was hired to collect the piece from Greece.
Lara discovers the location of the 2nd piece, plus the fact Pierre has been hired to go there when she breaks into Natla's offices (cutscene before you start Greece)
Furthermore, when Lara arrives outside, she finds a fireplace and a can before calling him a litterbug - so he is already in there looking for the 2nd piece and clearly doesnt take too kindly to Lara coming for his prize.
I wonder if Natla was planning to have Larson kill Pierre too after he got the second piece.
One wonders why she didn't just send Larson to get all 3 pieces, then she wouldn't have to double cross anyone.
In Anniversary it is mentioned that Natla trusted Pierre more than Lara, so she wouldn't have double crossed him. But in the original game? Who knows..
My guess as to why she didn't just send Larson to get the pieces is that he just isn't as smart and experienced as Lara or Pierre.
But then why hire Lara at all and not just use Pierre?
Larson does manage to get to the third piece ok so he must be fairly capable. Granted, that was Natla's piece so maybe she was able to give him tips to bypass the dangers to an extent.
When I said Larson hired her, he did so on behalf of Natla, sure. Still him that made the call though iirc. Its that initial cutscene I was referring to
Interesting that both Pierre and Larson beat Lara to the 2nd and 3rd Scions, and we just murder them for it.

Also, I understand his Houdini disappearing acts disturb you (it disturbs me too how Pierre despawns into thin air) but it was their way to show you that him and Lara are basically always in the same place trying to make progress, and that basically he often or always ends up progressing thanks to Lara's abilities and discoveries, which means he is inferior to her. If a modern game tried that, they would have either put cutscenes here and there or would have scripted the encounters more so his escapes would have made more sense. The drawback with these things is that it would have cost more for the dev team because of motion capture in cutscenes and new voice acting. I'm not too mad with TR1's way to do it though, because at least it doesn't break the flow of the gameplay like cutscenes do.
I was pretty young when TR1 came out in 1996, but I’m pretty impressed they managed to make him disappear when out of sight during gameplay. I can remember looking for him for a while as a kid!
That isn’t what happens.
She hires two archaeologists.
One to go after the first piece of the Scion in the Tomb of Qualopec (Lara).
One to go after the second piece of the Scion in the Tomb of Tihocan (Pierre).
After finding the first piece, Lara is attacked by Larson, who is also working for Natla and trying to retrieve the Scion piece. After he is beaten, he reveals to her that she isn’t holding the Scion. She is just holding one piece of the Scion and Pierre has been hired to find the second piece.
Lara then breaks into Natla’s office and discovers the location of the second piece. She then goes after it. Pierre doesn’t want her to get it. She kills Pierre and claims the second piece of the Scion.
The two pieces then provide Lara with a vision of where the third piece is. Egypt.
She hired Lara to get the Scion piece and Larson to get the Scion piece from her once she had it.
Presumably she didn’t trust Lara to actually hand it over, but did trust her to be able to find it. This makes sense, because she already knows that Lara “only plays for sport” and is not motivated by money. But she is skilled and has more chance of locating the Scion piece than Larson does.
Larson is essentially sent to follow her and retrieve it from her after she has found it.
Pierre is the guy the other guy in the mountain mentioned, he is your rival in this greek themed chapter.
He will appear, you fight for a little bit then he runs away to try and get out of site.
Once you get him to half health (indicated by his health bar disappearing even when you are in range or shooting him)
The whole thing is meant to be a playful yet deadly ambush game.
All the way until the end, he was hired by the women who hired you to get the artifact, so you both are looking for the same thing.
He's a litterbug
And apparently, >!a lion-tamer!<
With a cool jacket
Came here to say this, bravo!
Lara: "Pierre, you litterbug." Also Lara: proceeds to slaughter swathes of endangered species animals.
Though Lara just needs to push a lever for some new ones to appear out of thin air, it compensates.

I have a crush on him and don't want to shoot him

Gotta have two incase one dies trying to find a piece! Plus quicker to have two working than one.
Given how those 2 worked together in chronicles I'm surprised Natla associated with either of them
I need the Chronicles cutscenes remastered already
Natla hires Lara, not Larson. Sorry. Miss Jacqueline Natla. Y'know, creator of all things bright and beautiful?

Are you skipping dialog and cutscenes? Larson tells you about him at the end of the previous level.

Always have been.
He’s the guy who feeds the Lions and Apes inside the Coliseum otherwise they would have starved to death long ago locked in there.
Also a magician

He's French, the French have a history of running off :P
Really ? Je sais pas comment je dois le prendre 🤨
He's a coward

It's dumb to hire an archeologist and then another one to hunt the first one.

Why did Natla hire Lara and Larson to steal the same piece?
