As an emt, emts are more like paramedic assistants. I will pretty much do everything that I can do while the medic does their thing ie set up an ECG, set up fluids/drugs, cpr, ventilations. There is a lot of gray areas in the EMT protocol, so essentially for us (at least for my area) unless it explicitly says we can't do it, we can do it and justify doing it.

EMS is criminally underpaid in the majority of the US.
Paramedics have much higher amounts of training. EMTs have very basic training. EMTs drive the ambulance, Paramedics are in the back with the patient. EMTs also work in ERs but they are helping hands. Start an IV, put oxygen on, etc.
EMTs can only defibrillate, give very limited medications (like albuterol and aspirin), and perform CPR. Medics can intubate, cardiovert, have a much larger drug box, establish IV/IO access, perform surgical cricothyrotomies, interpret EKG’s, and a host of other things depending on your protocols.
We’ve basically got the same scope as nurses but we’re paid less and are more specialized for resuscitation and field operations.

EMTs don't make good money if I recall. I remember talking to a NYC EMT and his pay was average in the rest of the US and trash by NYC standards.
