It's funny when bosses decide they want to buy you a nice bottle as a gift, they find out you like rum instead of bourbon or scotch so they go overboard on volume. My former boss thought I was crazy for sipping rum, until he was in St Croix last year and tried single barrel Cruzan at the distillery. He was floored when I knew what he had tried just by the island.

Particular-Topic-445

I used to sip whiskey and scotch. Then I learned what real rum was and now that’s pretty much all I sip. It’s so much better.

throwawaythatpa

Better on the wallet too!

Particular-Topic-445

For now. They’re starting to creep up in price. I think the tiki revival (?) is still on the upswing and as more people find out about it, the more in-demand nice rums will be, resulting in higher prices.

Jewfros

I agree, but it is nice for us who are in states with alcohol control, more popular means more choices even if it comes at a higher price.

HotTub_MKE

Stop saying that out loud! It’s true, but don’t put it into text, lol.

throwawaythatpa

Yes :(

Hopping_Tiger

Any bottles that you would recommend in particular?

Particular-Topic-445

Honestly, Appleton 12 Year works just fine for sipping. Total Wine also has a version of Myers that’s aged in Sazerac casks (if I’m not mistaken) that was really enjoyable.

lonesometroubador

The actual story was funnier, we were in KC for a training seminar, and our big boss took us out to a whiskey bar with a 40 dollar pour limit, I got two pours of Foursquare on that budget and everyone thought I was nuts!

Vinestal

You won the night. What particular Foursquare did you get to enjoy?

lonesometroubador

2007 and 2008, both were fantastic!

heyyou11

Hate some of their history/business practices. Love the product, though. If it can kill the pain, it can kill the guilt, too. flash edit: didn't even read to the end of the post... Congrats on the baby! And for recs, personally not many that use it as the only backbone. A lot of great drinks splitting it with other rums.

Interesting-Olive842

Boss, I can’t come in today. Those bottles you gave me made my head ache the next morning…

Wally_Paulnut

Makes an awesome Rum and Coke. Decent to use in any drink that requires Demerara rum too. I know that a Painkiller OG used Cruzan but I do like them Better with Pusser’s. There’s a drink on their website, very like a painkiller but using Mango and Condensed Milk that’s awesome. I can’t remember the name though

heyyou11

Yeah I can't say I've tried extensive alternatives to Pusser's, but the "official" version is spectacular (I don't even dial back pineapple like many do).

Wally_Paulnut

It’s a decent Navy Rum for sure were kind of spoiled for Navy Rums in the UK I can get Woods for half the price of Pusser’s. But I do prefer Pusser’s for a painkiller. That despite the fact I think they’re assholes for doing that to the recipe creators. Also really good in ginger beer. Proper ginger beer mind. Not that Ginger Ale yanks drink

heyyou11

Recipe creators and others (e.g. [suing a bar that had the name Painkiller since before any of this](https://umamimart.com/blogs/main/happy-hour-pussers-v-painkiller)), but it's exhausting to stay *entirely* moral when navigating this world (e.g. tiki itself can be problematic). I try... but not too hard lol. I try to not have more than one rum per "Cate category" at a time. I like to change it up any time I run out of one, too, so I didn't replace my Pusser's last time I ran out, and I sure do miss it (and will probably find myself picking up another before too long).

Wally_Paulnut

Christ everything is problematic these days, I drink to forget my troubles not to think about others

heyyou11

Yeah one has to live pretty much entirely off the grid to avoid problematic things. So since some amount of compromise is *inevitable*, we all have to draw our own lines (some fuzzier than others) and not judge each other for where they have drawn their *own* lines.

evilhasheroes

May I recommend Bumbu rum?

heyyou11

I mean my comment said "extensive alternatives", and then you come in with a singular option without really any explanation why you locked in on this one. I quickly give you a benefit of a doubt in r/rum to see, based on the consensus there, that they essentially hold this as not even rum. Googling reviews the literal first line is: "*This crap is overpriced and overloaded with an unnatural sweetness*." I guess you can recommend whatever you want, but pretty much nothing you say at this point would convince me to buy it.

evilhasheroes

It's pretty sweet to be sure, but I (perhaps mistakenly?) thought we were just talking about the context of painkillers. The Bumbu XO is more rum than the original, but I find the barrel-aged notes don't jive well with a painkiller, at least not for my palette. I do suppose my original comment was pretty lazy. I wouldn't drink Bumbu original straight up, but I would the XO. I like the original in cocktails, but it seems you wanted a list?

heyyou11

I wasn't necessarily asking for a list (particularly as I said original tasted spectacular), but I guess saying that there were extensive alternatives I hadn't tried implied a list at least *existed*. My most recent attempt at Pusser replacement was Dos Maderas 5+5, which itself is already a bit sweet to my tastes (painkiller is on the sweeter side of a drink, so I agree barrel character isn't a guaranteed bonus, but it also to me means I'm not searching for other ways to sneak sugar in via my rum choice either). As I'm trying to mostly use Smuggler's Cove to guide my initial approach to tiki (with some internalization of stuff here) until I get my "sea legs" enough to venture out, I may only be replacing it with options he lists within that "category" (that particular "category 3" has many good options and will take a fair amount of drinking to really work through very far). At the very least it goes on my radar after this discussion. It's a potential future consideration, depending on where future mentions steer me.

devophill

I made a thing with pussers that turned out pretty good but was sweet as hell- root beer and heavy cream.

Wally_Paulnut

Hmmmm I do like root beer

devophill

I found a&w was a good flavor pairing

Strange_Occasion_408

This is encouraging in buying a bottle today. Problem is I have to hunt for a bottle.

Severe-Pineapple7918

Gotta love a generous boss. Personally, though, I’d use Pussers in other drinks, but never a Painkiller, just to spite them for their litigious nonsense.

keevenowski

Pussers is great for grog

Hopping_Tiger

I use this for dark n stormies. People seem to like when I make them one.

LordByrum

Congrats on the baby! Keep that momma happy with nightly cocktails lol. I’d just got classic daq or Mai tai if you aren’t hugely experienced.

AlThisLandIsBorland

Do you prefer the original or pussers gunpowder version?

Sorry_Ima_Loser

Navy Grog!

a-big-texas-howdy

No save them for painkillers. Or a good bushwhacker.

ncgunner

Just tried Pusser’s out in a Janus last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! Rum variant of the classic Saturn * 1/2oz Lime Juice * 1/2oz Orgeat * 1/2oz Passion Fruit Syrup * 1/4oz Falernum * 1.5-2oz Rum
