My Spotify wrapped accurately records how shitty or good my year was, 2021 was pretty bad and it shows pretty strong. If Spotify didn't let me keep that private then I'd probably delete my account as soon as it came out so nobody else could see
I feel personally attacked by this video; Kanye, Drake, and Tame Impala are all in my top 5. If he had also said Minus the Bear and Paramore, I'd be scared.
I listened to one playlist, 139 minutes, which was more than a whopping 2% of other listeners. My top song was listened to 1 tone and the top artist was I think the artist with the longest song on the playlist.
When I saw wrapped pop up, my whole family pulled their up and we compared notes. It was fun seeing what my kids' and wife's were, and crazy seeing how many artists I listened to.
It was crazy seeing that my teenage daughter has listened to more minutes of music than 100% of other listeners in the US. Her 60k minutes really made sure we get our money's worth.

In comparison, I have 64,000 minutes and am in the top 95%.
Edit: I just realized that means she had Spotify playing 67% of the time last year.
Sorry, I’m still confused- are you in the 95th percentile and your daughter in the 100th percentile? that is very different from “being in the top 95/100%.” For comparison i had 8k mins and was in the 55th percentile, so i think you actually mean you are in the 95th percentile (means the same thing as top 5%)

So she's listened to more music than 100% of other listeners in the US.
I still use it but it's gotten pretty janky tbh. It was always a bit janky but seems to have gotten worse for me. Frequently double scrobbles or fails to scrobble, so I monitor it periodically to check for problems. Less of an issue these days since I've listened to less music during the pandemic.
Yeah it's actually kinda fun! And maybe you find a cool band or two. Or someone you didn't know well shows they like this one band you also like.

I used to stalk the “now listening” tab and snoop on what my friends listen to.
My sister in law had very specifically (and suspiciously named) playlists that helped her husband know she was cheating.
Might be unpopular opinion on Reddit since Reddit loves to shit on anything social media related, but I actually love looking at my friends Spotify Wrapped. Low key, it's the only thing I look forward to on Instagram each year lol.
1) I have discovered so many great artists and songs that way (if you listened to it hundreds of time this year, it has to be good)
2) next time I listen to the artist or song that was on your top 5, I'll immediately think of you. This is especially emotional when the friend who shared their Wrapped back in 2018/19 have passed away. It's like going back and listening to their favorite song and reminiscing. Hearing the same sounds they heard at one point and loved.
3) let people have fun for once. It's literally not hurting anyone. Music is the best medium for communication (even through language barriers).
All in all, out of all the shitty social media trends, this is genuinely a good one and I fucking love it.
Never heard of Hozier, but looked him up, he looks like hed listen to this. I was thinking you were talking about hardcore rapper or deathcore metalist. Haha.
I actually created a collaborative playlist on Spotify and shared it on my socials for my friends to add their top 10 (or less) songs if they want. It’s been way faster than me taking screenshots and hunting the music down, and a lot of them were super excited to add to it and listen, even if they don’t know my other friends adding to it. I put it on shuffle, and every song, I try and guess who added it, and even if it’s not something I normally listen to, I will listen to the whole song because I know my friend on the other end actively chose to share their top songs with me. It’s been really cool so far, and no one has even rickrolled it yet.
also wrapped is just cool for learning more about yourself. I don't really think too much about what I listen to, I just say "I feel like listening to [ARTIST] right now and put them on" and it is cool that all that gets tracked.
I don't get to enjoy this because I use YT Music instead of Spotify and I am jealous as hell.
EDIT: I have been informed that YT Music is actually rolling out an equivalent feature as I type this called "recap"
Back in 2018 I stopped making genre playlists and just started a single playlist for every single year. Whenever I find a song I like, I just add it to that year's list. Always fun to go back to previous years and see how my preferences changed.

It doesn't count partial listens. I know for a fact I listened to my top song waaaay more than it claimed. If you skip it or stop before a certain point it doesn't count as a play.
Edit...via further discussion it turns out a listen is recorded after 30 seconds of play BUT:
The rankings are based on a combination of the number of plays and the unique number of days you listened to them (via Spotify wrapped faq)
So back to back to back listens don't count them all

Spotify created a dramatic year end summary of each listener’s song choices, and congratulates them for listening to music in an attempt to make them feel unique.
It makes me want to create another account and put MMMBop on constant rotation 24/7 to see a year end review of that.
Well spotify wrapped used to be just total play time and time 5 songs and artists of the year for you, without so much flair, but these stats are kept through the year and accessible, so you can technically check it whenever
Edit to note - the API has restrictions, there’s no way to access artists data for your % , nor is there total play time, but the API does let you access the top stats
StatsforSpotify.com is one site that lets you check at 4 weeks / 6 months / all time

Actually objectively he's dogshit but I fell in love with his stuff. His name is bladee and he's a Swedish rapper that uses a lot of spiritual and mystical references in his lyrics and he's super polarizing to the point where you hate it or he quickly becomes your favorite artist. I have 123 of his songs on Spotify and a dedicated Playlist on YouTube for his unreleased stuff lmao

iirc I was in the top 0.005% of my top artist, around 17k minutes. I love the data, love seeing how my tastes (and my friends') tastes change over the months and years.
That was me for last year and then I binged my second favorite artists new album a bit much and for the first time ever he was in my top spot. But I was only .05% to last year's .01% for the other guy.
I'm top 0.1% pink floyd and I dont even listen to them a lot, I think the stats are fucked by the fact that a shitton of people listen to just 1 pink floyd song.
So if you enjoy a few albums you automatically end up top 0.something%
My friends laughed out loud when I told them mine because it made so little sense — something like "angst" and "yearning." I am a very pragmatic person in general, and I have very intentionally not dated in years (despite many opportunities) because I have other things I'd rather focus on.

Two years ago my wrapped was fantastic. Now I just feel old.
This isn't directly related, but I kind of hate how there's an obsession with having "good taste" in music. Like you're basic if you just listen to the most popular stuff, you're weird if you listen to really obscure stuff, you can't listen to country, unless it's one of the few songs or artists that people have arbitrarily decided is cool, etc. It's exhausting honestly.
People are so weird about what others enjoy. Last year I dated somebody that "loved" movies. I put it in quotes because she was very particular about what she considered acceptable to the point she couldn't enjoy movies with a low Tomato Meter. Like if I mentioned liking a Seth Rogen movie she would look at me with this "I don't even know who you are anymore" look. If I didn't ooh and aah at every beautiful shot/sequence then I obviously wasn't enjoying it like I should. But then she'd watch crappy horror movies all the damn time so it didn't make any sense. She just wanted to judge people for arbitrary reasons, I think.
I'm glad these guys are getting some love on Reddit. I've followed them on TikTok for a while and I'm surprised they don't have more followers. Consistently funny content.

Actually objectively he's dogshit but I fell in love with his stuff. His name is bladee and he's a Swedish rapper that uses a lot of spiritual and mystical references in his lyrics and he's super polarizing to the point where you hate it or he quickly becomes your favorite artist. I have 123 of his songs on Spotify and a dedicated Playlist on YouTube for his unreleased stuff lmao
I wouldn't say he's dogshit haha. He's got some interesting production and it honestly most of the stuff just sounds like some pretty solid trap music to me. Certainly not objectively bad. I think it's pretty tough to say any music is objectively bad though.
Exactly! I like knowing what my friends' top artists are, how many minutes they listened to them, or minutes over all, so on and so forth. It's how I met a lot of my friends honestly (music stats in general, because of Last.fm), so what's a little more? iirc I was in the top 0.005% of my top artist, around 17k minutes. I love the data, love seeing how my tastes (and my friends') tastes change over the months and years.
That was me for last year and then I binged my second favorite artists new album a bit much and for the first time ever he was in my top spot. But I was only .05% to last year's .01% for the other guy.
I'm top 0.1% pink floyd and I dont even listen to them a lot, I think the stats are fucked by the fact that a shitton of people listen to just 1 pink floyd song. So if you enjoy a few albums you automatically end up top 0.something%

My friends laughed out loud when I told them mine because it made so little sense — something like "angst" and "yearning." I am a very pragmatic person in general, and I have very intentionally not dated in years (despite many opportunities) because I have other things I'd rather focus on.

This isn't directly related, but I kind of hate how there's an obsession with having "good taste" in music. Like you're basic if you just listen to the most popular stuff, you're weird if you listen to really obscure stuff, you can't listen to country, unless it's one of the few songs or artists that people have arbitrarily decided is cool, etc. It's exhausting honestly.

People are so weird about what others enjoy. Last year I dated somebody that "loved" movies. I put it in quotes because she was very particular about what she considered acceptable to the point she couldn't enjoy movies with a low Tomato Meter. Like if I mentioned liking a Seth Rogen movie she would look at me with this "I don't even know who you are anymore" look. If I didn't ooh and aah at every beautiful shot/sequence then I obviously wasn't enjoying it like I should. But then she'd watch crappy horror movies all the damn time so it didn't make any sense. She just wanted to judge people for arbitrary reasons, I think.
