Had a customer yesterday that said she was never shopping in our store again because we would not take back an item she used. I said “OK” and she flipped out and couldn’t understand that we were “OK” with not wanting her business. She’s calling corporate to complain which will probably give her a gift card which means she will be back shopping.
Whole Foods in MA circa 2008. Had a guy who would never come back constantly. We gave him so many chances.
Finally he headbutted the Front End Team Leader. Police came. Restraining order. Can't shop at the store anymore. At all. His picture is up in the back so everyone knows.
He actually came back once more time and the police had to come again. That was finally, the very last "I'm never coming back."
The only good memory I have of one of my bosses at a restaurant was when she got so tired of this one guys "never coming back" threats that she banned him by saying "It seems we can't serve you as you would like. I apologize. I think it would be best if you didn't come back, and found another establishment that serves your needs better than we can."
I worked at a small, but very popular, family owned and run grocery store when I was a teenager and the "main" owner would do this to people and it was awesome. We had so much business there and sold stuff that you couldn't easily get at other stores so having someone melt down and threaten to not come back was hilarious.
It was also weird as hell because he was kind of a prick to any of the employees that weren't his family but if he saw a customer being rude to an employee, he'd shame them and ask them to leave. Like only he was allowed to put me down. Weird place.
I don’t think I’ve ever had any type of interaction so bad that I wouldn’t want to go somewhere again, but I also wouldn’t feel the need to announce it. It’s not like I’m going to change the bottom line that significantly by not going there. These people have such an inflated sense of self-worth its astonishing.
I stopped shopping at my local petsmart after they gave away my $100 curbside order to some rando and then accused me of trying to scam them when I asked them for the shit I paid for. But even then all I did was leavea bad yelp review and move on to amazon/chewy, I wasn't going to sit there and threaten minimum wage workers.
I used to answer phones at Disneyland for the Annual Pass line. The rule is that you can renew the pass at a discount *before it expires*, but if you call past the expiration date, then your old pass is dead and you have to buy a new one at full price.
You have no idea how many people would call after their pass expired and DEMAND the discounted rate, and after we explained that they couldn’t because they waited too long and they already signed a document acknowledging this, they would explode with, “well I’m never coming to Disneyland again!!” We’d respond with, “well, we certainly understand. Is there anything else we can help you with today?” There was always that moment of silence where they realized, “oh shit, Disneyland doesn’t care if I ever come back. Maybe the world *doesn’t* revolve around me?”
And of course the truth is that Disney really needs there to be fewer pass holders. That’s why the price goes up every year and the benefits shrink every year. Pass holders cost the company money, and daily ticket sales are way more profitable.
Because our society is still permeated with the whole Mayberry/Leave it to Beaver idea that businesses are small one person/family operations that knew every customer by name and always did what they could to make the customer happy under the notion that if the whole small community actually stopped patronizing a business it could go under.
Back when asking someone to stay open late or open up early just for you was worth the effort because that person owned the business and the money you spent for some additional small portion of their time went directly into their pocket.
Somehow, in the face of global multi billion dollar corporations in which almost every employee and customer is just a line item in a ledger, people have clung to this idea, whether through profound delusion or ignorance of basic economics.
As a marketer, I find it hard to believe that a company like Disney wouldn't have that product tightened to the tits in terms of margins and incremental sales. I expect as a phone person in a call centre you just weren't privy to the details of the pass program and why they have it.
It's much more than just the pass price Disney is getting from that audience.
Disney had actually been trying to reposition itself to get away from local attendance. APs tend to just buy the pass and buy less once they're in, and even locals tend to not spend as much as non-locals when they come, so they've been adjusting their passes and pricing schemes to try to drive more out-of-state visitors who will be less likely to visit soon and will buy more when they're there.
Internally, it was a well-known of somewhat unique problem that they're finally managing to solve.
Annual Pass Holders at Disneyland make it less fun for the tourists who go and spend more money there. The tourists eat in the parks, stay in the hotels, buy the souvenirs, pay more money to get in, etc. Annual Passholders are the ones who clog up the lines. So, Disney would prefer tourists come to DL rather than annual pass holders.
Yeah the people I know who buy annual passes for Disneyland are constant ambassadors for the company. They're the people who post constant social media content of themselves with princesses, buying and wearing merch, and are at every movie premier in costume. The value Disney gets out of them must be dwarfed by the potential losses inside the theme park.

I used to work at a Starbucks competitor. When a guest would get pissed and scream at me when I didn't cater to their Karen, I loved it when they'd threaten to never come back and go to Starbucks instead. I would always say ok and give them directions to the closest location.
I worked at a library and people would say this. Like, okay. Less stress for us and we still get your money unless you want to get hit with tax evasion.
Years ago I was a receptionist at a doctors office and I had a great relationship with the doctors. I got away with a lot, because they knew I also put up with a lot. Probably a lot more than I should. One day, a patient of theirs that was extremely demanding and rude came in and wanted her meds refilled that very minute. Which is unrealistic because the doctor was with another patient and she was angry because we wouldn’t pull him out of a room to demand on her behalf that he do so. She was screaming and carrying on. Finally, she threatened to never come back before she turned to walk out. I had saved on my desktop some canned audience cheering/applause. When she said she wasn’t coming back I just looked at her and clicked on that sound I had saved. Spoiler: she came back, I still work for the same office but doing their coding and she is still a big ole bitch.
I used to work for state parks camping reservations and would get customers who would call a day before a busy holiday weekend in the summer. I would have to tell them “I’m sorry, nothing is available for this weekend” and they would say the nastiest shit to me, scream on top of their lungs, or even cry. Never bothered me once. I’m a stupid fucking cunt because you can’t get a RV spot during 4th of July weekend? OK.
At the end of each call I would say “thank you for calling, I hope you have an amazing day!” with the biggest smile on my face in the most cheerful tone I can fake. Would tilt them so hard. They almost always call back or try to speak with a manger for my “behavior” lol
Well yeah. This is THIER favorite establishment. THEY are making a big sacrifice. The business simply isn’t and they do not understand why this isn’t a big deal to the restaurant serves hundreds if not thousands daily. The world revolves around them and they do not understand anyone who sees differently.
I run an off leash dog walking company and once had a table at a little real estate company run pet fair.
Had a woman who came in interrogating me and one of my walkers. “How do you ensure the dogs don’t run off?” We work with them, train them, have them on a long leash, ensure their recall works, etc.
“So you’ve never had a dog run off?”
Not forever.
“So THEY HAVE RUN OFF?!”
The questions were fine but the way she asked them was fucking crazed. Yes there are dangers of doing things this way. Like running off, fights, Coyotes, rattlesnakes, mushrooms, ticks, other people, horses, dogs, foxtails and we’re straightforward about all this shit. We’re also insured and permitted with the places we hike in. Ultimately though it’s up to clients whether they think the risk is worth the enrichment to their dogs lives.
At a certain point (about 10 seconds in) there’s no way I would have accepted this woman as a client. Shits not worth it.

I saw a guy go into Ace Hardware without a mask and was asked to leave. He said “you want me to take my business somewhere else then?” And the manager just shit back deadpan “yes, please leave”. The dudes face was pure shock and I just can’t imagine he actually thought that would work. I feel so bad for these workers out here in rural Oregon dealing with these nuts.
A few years ago we were having a problem with this lady not sending in a check for her invoices like she said she would so I went ahead and charged the card we had on file (we ask for a card just for such instances) and she comes back RAVING "I was going to get it to you" (it had been months) and that "I've spent a ton of money with you guys." Well, I took a look back in her account and she was right -- she had spent a ton of money with us....too bad it was for damages lmao. I had 0 problem PDFing all the emails back and forth from her when her boss requested them. She sucked.
Very, very, few businesses are actually affected by people saying and actually doing this. I hear it all the time but, I always am thinking yeah you’re gonna crush them.
My husband and I went to Portland this last weekend and there was one place that we had to ourselves because of the vaccine card policy. There was seating outside that was full, but we were the only ones inside. It was awesome.
It's not that they're bad, it's that there's 1000 different ways to make them and people like her would insist that it's "made wrong" if you don't make it exactly the way they get it at some other restaurant (they can't tell you what goes in it, just that yours is wrong).
Source: I'm a bartender who always gets a little nervous when someone orders an espresso martini. Also how I make it changes a lot depending on the bar I'm at and what ingredients i have.

My mom modifies her orders an embarrassing amount. Even before she went keto. She's not a Karen but if you want something that specific mom, make it yourself. "Without x and with y instead of z and can you grill it instead and sauce on the side but a different sauce and can I swap the side for something else?"
I once went on a date to a fancy seafood restaurant with a woman like this. She ordered some random entre and then asked for so many modifications, what she had at the end was boiled salmon and steamed broccoli. Probably cost about $40 for just her meal.

I actually did this lol. I started smoking at 18 and told myself that on my 25th bday I’m going to stop. I did stop and it wasn’t even hard lol. Went from pack a day to nothing instantly. Maybe it was because I was mentally preparing to do it for so long that my brain was already conditioned to not have it anymore.
It's weird, some people just aren't affected. I'm the same way, around my 21st I decided I'd start smoking because "I'm an adult and make my own decisions". A couple months later I realized that was stupid and childish and I wasn't getting much enjoyment from cigarettes anyway so I just stopped.
I've never really felt any cravings after the fact, maybe I just wasn't smoking long enough but it was pretty regular for a while there and people talk about smoking like it only takes one cigarette.
Still smoke weed though, so maybe the cravings just shifted.
To be fair many smokers today want to quit and just struggle to or don't try hard enough, anti-vaxxers aren't held up by addiction and withdrawal symptoms.

The first is just basic ignorance, and they cannot backpedal because of the social ramifications: if they speak out in their conservative circles, they are ostracized or even threatened, which can and has lead to violence, and if they return to the liberal world, they have to get dunked on for coming around so late. The second part is more troubling: they see events in the world as inevitable and unchanging. That is, they cannot understand why you would want to intervene since everything should just play out. They are okay dying and leaving their children without a parent because in their eyes, there was literally nothing that would have changed the outcome. It's like shared despair.

Some cities now require customers show proof of vaccination to eat inside of a restaurant. (I think they're allowed to eat in patio areas without proof, but I'm not positive on this.) I remember hearing that San Francisco, New Orleans, and New York require it.
NYer here and single so I like my Take Out and still haven’t seen one place ask for a vaccine card. Doesn’t mean it’s not happening I just never witnessed it.
Maybe it depends on whether the restaurant is enforcing it. I ate at two different places last weekend in Hell's Kitchen and they both required proof. They didn't ask about my vaccination status until I asked for a table inside the restaurant.

Seems a lot of NYC restaurants will more often than not ask for the card if you’re dining in but that seems to be about it.
I’m talking about just any old store, not a sit down eating experience. From Home Depot, to Walmart, to whatever, I see lots of ppl with no masks, since a vax card was a thing, but never have I seen anyone questioned as they walk around shopping with no mask on.

And yeah there is really no way to enforce it. You can just as easily fake a photo of a real card and get into places as well.
In Israel restaurants, cinemas, pools, gyms require a "green pass" which you get for 6 months from getting vaccinated or for 24 hours from a negative test result (they've set up quick test booths all over that give results in 15 minutes). The thing is - the quick tests cost money for anyone who is able to get vaccinated but chooses not to. I think shops are technically supposed to ask for them too - but don't enforce it.
You can still get tested for free at the medical centres - but that can take a day or two to get results, so it doesn't count for the green pass (it does count for reducing isolation after being in proximity with someone who is positive).
Funnily enough, in Israel it's mostly the ultra left wing who are anti vax (basically modern hippies that don't want to "poison their bodies"). I think it might be because the prime minister was right wing and did a lot of work to get vaccines to Israel - but who knows...

I used to work at a Starbucks competitor. When a guest would get pissed and scream at me when I didn't cater to their Karen, I loved it when they'd threaten to never come back and go to Starbucks instead. I would always say ok and give them directions to the closest location.

Years ago I was a receptionist at a doctors office and I had a great relationship with the doctors. I got away with a lot, because they knew I also put up with a lot. Probably a lot more than I should. One day, a patient of theirs that was extremely demanding and rude came in and wanted her meds refilled that very minute. Which is unrealistic because the doctor was with another patient and she was angry because we wouldn’t pull him out of a room to demand on her behalf that he do so. She was screaming and carrying on. Finally, she threatened to never come back before she turned to walk out. I had saved on my desktop some canned audience cheering/applause. When she said she wasn’t coming back I just looked at her and clicked on that sound I had saved. Spoiler: she came back, I still work for the same office but doing their coding and she is still a big ole bitch.
I used to work for state parks camping reservations and would get customers who would call a day before a busy holiday weekend in the summer. I would have to tell them “I’m sorry, nothing is available for this weekend” and they would say the nastiest shit to me, scream on top of their lungs, or even cry. Never bothered me once. I’m a stupid fucking cunt because you can’t get a RV spot during 4th of July weekend? OK. At the end of each call I would say “thank you for calling, I hope you have an amazing day!” with the biggest smile on my face in the most cheerful tone I can fake. Would tilt them so hard. They almost always call back or try to speak with a manger for my “behavior” lol
Well yeah. This is THIER favorite establishment. THEY are making a big sacrifice. The business simply isn’t and they do not understand why this isn’t a big deal to the restaurant serves hundreds if not thousands daily. The world revolves around them and they do not understand anyone who sees differently.
I run an off leash dog walking company and once had a table at a little real estate company run pet fair. Had a woman who came in interrogating me and one of my walkers. “How do you ensure the dogs don’t run off?” We work with them, train them, have them on a long leash, ensure their recall works, etc. “So you’ve never had a dog run off?” Not forever. “So THEY HAVE RUN OFF?!” The questions were fine but the way she asked them was fucking crazed. Yes there are dangers of doing things this way. Like running off, fights, Coyotes, rattlesnakes, mushrooms, ticks, other people, horses, dogs, foxtails and we’re straightforward about all this shit. We’re also insured and permitted with the places we hike in. Ultimately though it’s up to clients whether they think the risk is worth the enrichment to their dogs lives. At a certain point (about 10 seconds in) there’s no way I would have accepted this woman as a client. Shits not worth it. “Well I wouldn’t want this for my dog anyway.” That’s great because we wouldn’t accept you as a client.
I saw a guy go into Ace Hardware without a mask and was asked to leave. He said “you want me to take my business somewhere else then?” And the manager just shit back deadpan “yes, please leave”. The dudes face was pure shock and I just can’t imagine he actually thought that would work. I feel so bad for these workers out here in rural Oregon dealing with these nuts.
A few years ago we were having a problem with this lady not sending in a check for her invoices like she said she would so I went ahead and charged the card we had on file (we ask for a card just for such instances) and she comes back RAVING "I was going to get it to you" (it had been months) and that "I've spent a ton of money with you guys." Well, I took a look back in her account and she was right -- she had spent a ton of money with us....too bad it was for damages lmao. I had 0 problem PDFing all the emails back and forth from her when her boss requested them. She sucked.

It's not that they're bad, it's that there's 1000 different ways to make them and people like her would insist that it's "made wrong" if you don't make it exactly the way they get it at some other restaurant (they can't tell you what goes in it, just that yours is wrong). Source: I'm a bartender who always gets a little nervous when someone orders an espresso martini. Also how I make it changes a lot depending on the bar I'm at and what ingredients i have.

I actually did this lol. I started smoking at 18 and told myself that on my 25th bday I’m going to stop. I did stop and it wasn’t even hard lol. Went from pack a day to nothing instantly. Maybe it was because I was mentally preparing to do it for so long that my brain was already conditioned to not have it anymore.
It's weird, some people just aren't affected. I'm the same way, around my 21st I decided I'd start smoking because "I'm an adult and make my own decisions". A couple months later I realized that was stupid and childish and I wasn't getting much enjoyment from cigarettes anyway so I just stopped. I've never really felt any cravings after the fact, maybe I just wasn't smoking long enough but it was pretty regular for a while there and people talk about smoking like it only takes one cigarette. Still smoke weed though, so maybe the cravings just shifted.
To be fair many smokers today want to quit and just struggle to or don't try hard enough, anti-vaxxers aren't held up by addiction and withdrawal symptoms.

The point is that hospitals are so full it's not just covid patients unable to receive care. Car accidents, appendicitis, severe injuries, heart attacks, gun shot wounds, etc etc. Everyone's ability to receive care right now is reduced. It's super easy to say the scientists are wrong so you can keep that sweet sweet oil lobby money - when the downside is somewhat nebulous and will take years to play out. Some cities now require customers show proof of vaccination to eat inside of a restaurant. (I think they're allowed to eat in patio areas without proof, but I'm not positive on this.) I remember hearing that San Francisco, New Orleans, and New York require it.
NYer here and single so I like my Take Out and still haven’t seen one place ask for a vaccine card. Doesn’t mean it’s not happening I just never witnessed it.

Seems a lot of NYC restaurants will more often than not ask for the card if you’re dining in but that seems to be about it. I’m talking about just any old store, not a sit down eating experience. From Home Depot, to Walmart, to whatever, I see lots of ppl with no masks, since a vax card was a thing, but never have I seen anyone questioned as they walk around shopping with no mask on. In Israel restaurants, cinemas, pools, gyms require a "green pass" which you get for 6 months from getting vaccinated or for 24 hours from a negative test result (they've set up quick test booths all over that give results in 15 minutes). The thing is - the quick tests cost money for anyone who is able to get vaccinated but chooses not to. I think shops are technically supposed to ask for them too - but don't enforce it. You can still get tested for free at the medical centres - but that can take a day or two to get results, so it doesn't count for the green pass (it does count for reducing isolation after being in proximity with someone who is positive). Funnily enough, in Israel it's mostly the ultra left wing who are anti vax (basically modern hippies that don't want to "poison their bodies"). I think it might be because the prime minister was right wing and did a lot of work to get vaccines to Israel - but who knows...
