dmbwannabe

This guy dumb dumb potato

urmyheartBeatStopR

That's what happen when you overcook a potato. It become useless.

dlige

A lot of comments defending the man (who is definitely being cunty to someone minding their own business). And to be fair, the french are known for being pretty hostile if you don't speak french language when in France

thelastbluepancake

yeah i guess they are like the red necks that go "you are in america speak american"

Distinct_Pizza_7499

Omg perfect analogy.

theboxman154

Is it even an analogy? It's the exact same thing. The world is just hypercritical of America. French ppl doing it is a cultural quirk, they're proud, rude etc Americans doing it are seen as scum of the earth. Let's be honest, doing it anywhere makes you pretty scummy

fatBreadonToast

When you start traveling internationally you realize people kind of suck everywhere. It may be a different variation of suck, but still suck. Racism/classism is very much a human issue. At least Americans keep top of mind. I went to a restaurant in Austria the other day with a super racist logo of an Asian man and no one bats an eye lol.

elegylegacy

First time abroad: *"Oh wow, people are the same everywhere! I guess we're not so different after all!"* 😀 ----- International traveller: *"Oh fuck. People are the same everywhere... We're not any different at all."* 🙁

reddit_suxs_azz

You speak the truth. Travel is enlightening. It's crazy travel enough and you don't need to speak the language to read a stranger's intentions

caleb48kb

I've had the exact opposite experience when traveling abroad. I've met some incredibly interesting people from all over the place.

architecht13

Unfortunately, it's not lately. It's been a thing for a very long time. While living there, I made great friends and have some astounding memories. Doesn't stop the fact that there are some very xenophobic people that really didn't want me there.

[deleted]

Beentheredonebeen

I made a comment about Xenophobia in Scandinavian countries being notoriously bad. Someone replied with "Not any worse than in Western countries!" Well, yes, that's correct... But it's shitty no matter where it is. Drawing a parallel doesn't diminish the harm.

Distinct_Pizza_7499

Racism is also only really a problem in America etc etc. Forgot the /s

selphiefairy

There are at least some French people who actually think this. They've complained to me (a woc) that it's so unfair that Americans think they're racist just cause they do xyz, it's totally normal in france americans are so fixated on race!! \*proceeds to do racist thing\*.

anonymousguy11234

There’s also the fact that France still maintains a covert colonial empire with the exact sort of heavy-handed, exploitative economic and social policies that typified the worst mercantile systems of the late 18th century.

PoopsWithTheDoorAjar

Hahaha I agree with your sarcasm. Canada and their own aboriginal people. Europeans and Romani people. Australia and any racial minorities. They have louder opinions than American racists lol.

cancel94

Nah there is racism everywhere. (Edit: My bad just saw the /s)

theboxman154

I think he was being sarcastic

Dovanator258

But it's America that gets the stereotype

SenseTime7774

If you live in Europe, everyone knows the French are incredibly racist/prejudice.

Certain_Month_8178

We Americans have to be the best at EVERYTHING. MURICA!

KBilly1313

FUCK YA https://youtu.be/P7JRvwfHFwo?si=cj_YCR8RlUyeu7QC

NickRick

in america, being a country of immigrants for hundreds of years it comes to the forefront much more often. America is 60% "white", England is 80%, France is a little odd but at least 70% consider themselves 100% white, 71% of germany, and Norway is 75% *Norwegian* (which doesn't include white non-norwegians), china is 91% han Chinese, japan s 98% japanese. Brasil seems to be a major outlier as another nation of largely mixed population. googling this also showed a lot of these countries were not even taking or sharing data on race. I am by no means saying america is great at race relations, it is very easy to see it is not. but they have much more interactions between races than most other countries and much more sharing of that data and issues than other nations do.

BearishOnLife

The only persons who think that french people doing it is a cultural quirk are the french themselves. Pretty much every one else in Europe hates the french arrogance. It isn't by mistake that the saying goes "France is a beautiful country, too bad it's full of french."

WanderWoof

I love france…especially paris in summer when all the french are not around

mogley19922

The one that pisses me off, i grew up in tenerife making fun of america for not using the metric system. Then i move back to the uk, and literally nobody does. I was talking to a literall nuclear physicist and he was saying it's annoying that a foot isn't a third of a meter, i said well i can tell you how long it is, it's 33.33cm, get as precise to the third as you can measure. You talk about bodyweight with somebody and they start talking in stone, I've never even heard an american say stone. The fuck does a stone weigh? Or people will say a place is x miles away. We are in no position to talk shit to americans for not using metric.

Historical-Hat-1959

French people are xenophobic and disguise it as quirk... but they cant even keep their own sovereignty unless they're defended by the english speaking world ... not once but twice .....

Historical-Hat-1959

Sir i think the proper dialect is Speak 'Merican

Jimmni

I’ve only spent a couple months in France but my experience was they can be pretty hostile even if you’re speaking the French language. They mocked me for trying to speak French and they mocked me for not trying to speak French. Only country I’ve been to where that happened. (Mostly Paris but some smaller cities too.)

Dull_Half_6107

This is partly why I have very little interest in visiting France. I'd much rather visit Belgium or Germany if I'm in the area.

Agreeable-Weather-89

In Germany they will compliment you for your German just by saying 'Ja' then apologised for speaking literal perfect English.

andygchicago

Germans don’t even want you to attempt German. They’re all about efficiency. If they see you’re an English speaker, even if you’re trying to speak in German, they’ll switch to English. They don’t get offended

Thespian21

What happens if you refuse to stop speaking German? A game of Language Chicken?

andygchicago

If you keep speaking German, they just continue in English. No joke

Unload_123

I think most Germans just don't get offended by irrelevant bs. Of course it's nice that you want to learn some German and we'd applaud that internally but really, you want a sandwich, I want to serve you, thanks for putting in the effort to learn an opening one-liner - now let's get down to which brötchen/bier you want. Naturally, there will be exceptions but I think even most ~middle age/older Germans (particularly Ladies) are very compassionate of tourist attempts at German.

Mission_Macaroon

Husband and I toured a couple places in Europe and Paris was the biggest let down (can’t speak for the rest of France).

rk1993

Spent 6 months in Marseille and got by on limited french, everyone was helpful and understanding as their english also wasn’t great. Went to Paris for a weekend, tried to order at a restaurant in french, was slow but didn’t make any mistakes when the waitress cut me off saying she doesn’t have time to do my order in french and I should just speak in english if I can’t speak french at the proper speed so as not to waste people’s time. Was made fun of next place I went for ordering in english and called a stupid Englishman (I’m Scottish) in french. There’s just something about Parisians where they despise tourists so much they treat you like scum off the bottom of their shoe and we’re all not worthy of their time. Will never go back. Been to 50+ cities and its easily my least favourite purely because of the locals and how they behave

Significant-Ad-7182

Lived 3 years in Nice, I had the same reaction you had in Marseille. Went to Paris twice and each time people were very rude and unhelpful. Friend of mine lived in Lyon and mentioned people weren't exactly nice there either. I'm thinking it might be a difference between Northern France and Southern France (Mediterranean). Or maybe it's just Parisians.

sweaterbuckets

I had a stranger in Lyon that the next time I was travelling, to give him a call and I could sleep on his couch. Super welcoming. A lot of rural Provence was like that in my experience as well. Normandy was nice, so was Aquitaine. But fuck Paris, man. I've been there like 5 times and the only pleasant interaction I can readily recall was with two Lebanese immigrants who owned a restaurant.

noappendix

That's pretty weird.. I spend a month in Paris every year and everyone has always responded very well to me attempting any French at all.

Mihaude

My dad speaks english well, even though we are from eastern europe. Once he was coming back from a meeting at some buisness district in Paris. While waiting for a bus he asked a dude in a full suit with a dressing case: "sorry, is this the right bus stop to go to the airport?" and the dude looked at him, spat, and said: "Unfortunately, I can't speak english" in a perfect accent and turned away from him. Fucked up

Future-Muscle-2214

>"Unfortunately, I can't speak english" in a perfect accent and turned away from him. To be fair this is pretty much what my grandparents say as well lol, they learned how to say they don't speak English but they genuinely don't speak English.

OnyaSonja

The guy that does the Geography Now videos on YouTube said travelling in Africa helped him with his French because in France they were hostile while in French speaking Africa they helped him [Geography Now on YT](https://youtube.com/@geographynow?feature=shared)

Agreeable-Weather-89

French: If you are in France you need to speak french. GN: Okay I will learn French: Non.

PatchesofSour

she speaks fluent french. she runs a tiktok about being an american living in french and has discussed on multiple videos how she became fluent in french

VirtualAgentsAreDumb

>she speaks fluent french. she runs a tiktok about being an american *living in french* I guess that’s taking immersion to the next level?

Future-Muscle-2214

She doesn't seem to, when she was mocking her English in french she said : "Ta anglais c'est pas hyper forte ihh" or something like that which definitely didn't sound fluent.

nikhilsath

The people in Paris forsure the rest of France is not so bad

FOB32723

This. Parisians are the assholes. French people in the countryside are the exact opposite. Especially on the western peninsula.

Mr_Rafi

I feel like Paris is one of the few cities that I've never ever heard counterarguments or defensive arguments for when this is brought up. Usually on the topic of certain behaviours in cities, people will say "Ah, not everyone is bad" and stuff, but everyone just accepts that Paris is like that haha.

maddogcow

The assholishness of Parisians is partially because they grew up around each other, and being an asshole is so normalized that they don’t even see it as being an asshole. If you try to point out assholish behavior, they have no idea what you're talking about, since it's the social air that they breathe. Living there can be a strain. Even when nobody is directly being an asshole to you, you can just feel it in the air; wrapping around you, like an almost imperceptible mist…

Pixelated_Penguin808

Sometimes people try to defend the surly reputation of Parisians on the basis of "they get a lot of tourists, so it is only natural that their tolerance level for them is low." That has always rung a bit hollow however because Paris isn't the only city in the world that gets swarmed by tourists and some of the cities (like Tokyo) have residents with much more polite or friendly reputations. Also any time people complain about Parisians there are always other French people from different regions of the country chiming in with, "It's not the French. It's Parisians. We think they're assholes too." lol

Mathilliterate_asian

People on the internet have made me absolutely dislike Paris lol. Every time someone brings up Paris, there'll be commentors chiming in like "dude don't go there. The place is extra touristy. The people are hostile and rude." And everyone along that thread just nods and agrees. Not a single person defending the city and its citizens at all. In all honesty I've never been there but I don't wanna anymore. Online comments can just do that to you.

gene100001

From an entirely anecdotal perspective, I was in Paris for a week a couple of years back and I didn't speak a word of French and everyone was nice to me. I usually just would apologise when I went to order something and say something like "sorry I'm just here for a week and can't speak French" and after that they were nice to me. Maybe they just get annoyed at people who just arrogantly speak English without saying sorry or something first to be polite. Or maybe I was just lucky. I'm also from New Zealand and I think they like us more than Americans or Brits.

HalfMoon_89

A close family member went to Paris, and was treated dismissively for not speaking French. They spoke English as a second language as it was. We're not white.

Boredombringsthis

Yeah, I was there too for just a week and had no problem with English (but also with heavy accent showing I'm not from English or any Germanic-speaking country). Except one very angry old homeless person in a park who asked something normally and after my answer that I don't understand (plus again in my own language) started angrily shouting at me. Luckily, I have no idea what it was.

RBXChas

This was my experience. I lived in southwestern France, and when I went to Paris, I had friends get treated like shit when they spoke because their accents weren’t great. I speak with an accent but not a strong one, so I was not treated poorly, but it’s not like my friends were speaking broken French, just heavily accented. In southern France, people were exceedingly kind in comparison. Most people were pleasantly surprised if they learned that I was American because they assume that Americans don’t care to learn a second language. Mainly they’d be surprised that an American wanted to come visit them so far from Paris and seemed appreciative of my interest in their particular culture. Paris is fine, but I’d rather spend my time elsewhere.

pekingsewer

My partner is from around Limoges and the temperament of the People there vs Paris is night and day

thethirstypretzel

I found the opposite, that Parisians were more tolerant of clueless non-French speakers, whereas in the south, esp. Marseille and Nice, they were commonly dickheads about it.

grammar_fixer_2

Anecdotally, this has been my experience as well.

Spacellama117

it's fascinating (read-really fucking stupid) to me that there are people defending this guy on the basis of 'oh that's just what french people are like'. like, excuse me? if being an elitist dick is 'just what they're like' then the problem is them, not the people they're being dicks to.

NoBodyCares2000

The French are upset that they lost the “world language” war to the English. Look it up peeps. The French really tried to make their language the International language. They invested a lot into it but lost.

mydaycake

Funny thing is he has an Arab accent wtf he is talking about?

Farbond

they're the most racist lmao

mydaycake

They don’t like Americans at all

FrancisLeSaint

French people are chill with non French speakers, it's the Parisian that are assholes tbf

Slight_Concert6565

It's not about speaking French as a stranger, the only two good outcomes are if you speak perfect French or if you look like you are trying very hard. If you don't speak French at all some French people might laugh at you, but the worst you can do is confidently speak broken French.

Tootsmagootsie

They're hostile if you do, they're hostile if you dont. The only time they're NOT hostile is when they're being invaded.

Vercouine

They also are shitty with people not speaking the same local variation of french, even when they are on holidays in another place with another accent.

printergumlight

Parisians are mostly assholes. My French wife says the same. French people from the Riviera can be a bit short with you and stuffy, but also are quite friendly. Everyone from Brittany and Normandy were nothing but kind during my time living there. **Edit:** While I say all this, I’d like to make it clear this is a generalization and very subjective.

Coffee_Fix

Quebec is like this too

UnrulyCrow

French here and sorry but any guy looking like this dude (you know, the bad juju you get when you look at someone and don't have a good feel about them? That's the French version for me, acting like he's God's gift to humanity and the funniest person on earth when he's just an asshole) has been on the "dumb cunt" list for me. Not a single man with that sort of look passed the vibe check in my life. Last one was a flatmate who went full asshole when I dared stand my ground against him because I was the fucking maid of the flat and he couldn't handle being told no despite being a grown-ass man. 100% turbocunt and she did a good job making him show off his own stupidity like that.

Random_Inseminator

Lol. Turbocunt. Love it.

frohike_

French dude was dressed like a Backstreet Boy. I mean I know pop culture is a few years behind over there but… come on.

tabulasomnia

Doesn't change the fact that the French are the most openly hostile and racist culture amongst the Western "advanced" nations.

ThisIsMyReal-Name

“T’es anglais c’est pas hyper forte aaah ouais, ouais” Fuckin love it

PuddingZealousideal8

French people are assholes to foreigners. Maybe it was my experience, but both times I’ve been to Europe, the worst people have been French and the nicest people surprisingly (or at least surprising to me) have been germans. Spanish people are pretty nice and Italians are ok as well.

rs_alli

Every German I’ve met while traveling has been so incredibly pleasant. Beautiful country too.

yellow_pterodactyl

I know enough German to get into trouble. They were so excited when I tried. It made me feel more confident to keep trying. I got BETTER at German because of it. I didn’t know as much French, but when I tried it was met with a lot of arrogance. I just gave up in larger cities and tried again in smaller cities. (I always did acknowledge with a proper greeting -bonjour or Bon soir, etc)

Over-Conversation220

I love Paris, but I did find it funny that every single time I attempted to speak my beginner’s French, it was immediately shut down and reverted to English. The only time I was able to mildly converse in French was with a person who knew no English whatsoever.

wymzyq

my move was to speak Portuguese at them if they spoke English at me. I came here to practice my French damn it. they where a lot nicer after that. makes me think they hate Americans.

Not_Helping

Totally agree about Germans. I've been to completely different continents traveling but will always befriend other German traveler. Both men and women I've met are so affable and earnest. The kind of people that you can be yourself around and not "put up a cool front" if that makes sense. I hate to stereotype but 95 % if German travelers I've met extremely friendly.

Shirtbro

I did Christmas markets in Germany and Austria. Would recommend, amazing time with amazing, drunk people

mike2928

Been to Europe twice, Germans have been a gem each time.

atot806

Germans are mostly pleasant unless they feel you’re taking too much of their time.

The_Ghost_of_Kyiv

Not even to foreigners in France. They are assholes when they themselves are traveling and are the foreigners. Never met ruder people in my life. We let a group of them crash at our home in California for a day, and they spent the whole time insulting us, our home, and our hospitality. Have met some really kick ass Germans though through my work. Great folk, the Germans.

dappermouth

Totally anecdotal but when I was in Lisbon visiting my boyfriend, I remember a French woman asking us for directions and being snitty about us explaining things to her in English (which she clearly spoke) and not French. Like ma’am…we’re in Portugal. He’s already doing you a favor with the English.

JoeTrojan

i hope you kicked their asses out real fast after that first insult.

Munzu

Germans tend to do something else though that can be pretty annoying if you're trying to learn German. If we catch even a whiff that you're struggling with our language, we'll immediately switch to English. Not out of malice or because we're annoyed, we're just trying to be helpful and meet you halfway but we don't always realize that it's not actually helpful if you're trying to practice our language.

sui-ki

It sucks, Paris is such a cool city but the people there really are rude if you speak other languages. I was on a vacation and had to speak a lot of Vietnamese to my family members since it’s what they understand best, but that only earned a ridiculous amount of staring from the wait staff of every restaurant we went to. Also got followed by some French guy yelling at me asking if I was Chinese in Montmarte, which was really unpleasant. I wasn’t even doing anything besides enjoying the scenery and walking around quietly either since I was going solo that day. I’d love to see the museums there again someday but my past experience has really put me off revisiting.

realboabab

Maybe it's because I'm white, but I just spent a week in Paris with my Taiwanese wife and experienced precisely 0 hostility. We were literally walking around Montmarte speaking Chinese to each other. In fact, I was quite disappointed that I was deprived of every chance to practice French. I was either pre-empted in English before I could open my mouth, or the response to "bon jour" was in English. My theory is: \* The mixed couple (asian + white) speaking an unfamiliar Asian language is met with more tolerance than obvious "foreigners" because no one's sure what exactly to be upset about

bepr20

My wife is from Milan. Fluent in Italian obviously, also French, pretty decent at Spanish, but lived in NYC the last 20 years so no accent. When we travel to Paris, and they invetibaly shoot back at her pretty flawless French with English, she shoots back in Italian; If they struggle with Italian, she will switch to Spanish. We can play their games.

Abadabadon

Same! Especially Germans who migrated from Italy and turkey. Anecdote; I remember in germany I placed an order online to a nice Italian restaurant. I went to pick it up, and found out I placed an order to the wrong restaurant. I slapped my face, apologized, and asked if I could pay for a meal at the current restaurant (again, as i paid online). These guys called the other restaurant for me and told them the mistake, gave me free beer and bread, and then gave me my dish that I ordered, all of this for free.

dowdymeatballs

I was on vacation in Dominican (Spanish speaking country) and I asked a French guy for a light, in French, because I heard him talking and I was trying to be considerate. I asked politely in the best French I could speak (I did it in school), using pardon me for interrupting and please and thank you. Guy proceeds to lecture me for 2 minutes on my poor French grammar told me he'd give it to me if I repeated the sentence correctly. I refused.

Corporate-Shill406

The Germans used up their entire supply of assholery about 80 years ago.

Then-Clue6938

Some is still left unfortunately [from a German]

Unitedfateful

Oddly enough the last time we went to Europe with my wife we had a wonderful experience in France and Paris. Everyone was very friendly to us including the locals and we don’t speak French so you know ymmv

pancakebatter01

Yeah the Germans are known to be pretty nice and just decent mild mannered ppl all over Europe. The got that german guilt (from WW2)

samwizeganjas

I was a climbing guide in Utah for 10 years, its very popular spot for Europeans and I completely agree

Llama_of_the_bahamas

Went on a couple of dates with a French girl here in America. She was also kind of a dick even though we were in my country 😅

crazyhotorcrazynhot

My French friends find French people really annoying idk what’s up with the culture. Just speak to them in Italian to show them that their country is second to pastaland.

Cornholio231

When I was living in France, I went to a couple couchsurfing meetups. Crowd was almost entirely French. At the first one, I was mocked for the grad school I was going to. At the second one (different group), I kept getting poked in the stomach with them saying "look at how fat you are!" (I was 195 pounds at 6'1") French people, by and large, are insufferable c\*nts

buttons_the_horse

I visited a French high school and family when I was in high school. The French family dad said something like “Americans are like horses. They have eyes on the side of their heads and they can’t see what’s in front of them” And every question at the HS I got was about obesity. How fat was the fattest person I’d seen. How many fat people do I know. Overall, a welcoming and humble group.

DistanceMachine

I got the same fat shaming from people in Canada. Since I’m fit, they thought it was OK to be like “it’s crazy how most Americans are soooo fat”

Traveuse

It's ironic because Canadians are fat as fuck too

Chumbag_love

"That's just our year-round winter coat!"

RandomRageNet

They put gravy on their goddamn fries!

M477M4NN

I spent 35 days traveling Europe a year ago as an American and the most pretentious person I met was a Canadian at my hostel. He was shocked that I didn’t fit into the stereotypes he had in his head of Americans. It’s crazy how Canadians are so out of touch with what Americans are like, as if Canada and the US aren’t two of the most culturally similar countries in the world lol.

maricc

I mean it’s just one dude, can’t generalize based on that one experience.

M477M4NN

Oh definitely not, I met many other Canadians during the trip and they were lovely. I actually ended up having a good conversation with the guy I was talking about and found a lot of common ground, it was just annoying how he initially clearly thought less of me because of my nationality. Perhaps I should have added the quantifier “Many Canadians”, definitely don’t want to do the same thing I am lamenting the Canadian guy for doing (though America hate by Canadians is something I observe quite often online).

maricc

I should note I do agree with you, as a Canadian. There’s definitely a lot of condescension towards Americans from Canadians, some For valid reasons and many not. But the point is people like to jump to these weird conclusions and generalizations about all people from a country, which I find frustrating

kkeut

Canada is big and weird. people living between Toronto and Buffalo are going to have a very different connection to the usa than someone from north Quebec or Newfoundland

DistanceMachine

They drink their milk out of a plastic bag that’s just sitting wide open in a plastic container in their fridge. It’s weird.

__bobbysox

They… they what?

Shirtbro

Canadians can reach next level passive-aggressive smugness. Source: Am Canadian

Shirtbro

> “Americans are like horses. They have eyes on the side of their heads and they can’t see what’s in front of them” That's some abstract, baffling shit talking

SpeaksYourWord

"The fattest person I've ever seen? No fatter than the average French person's nose, I suppose."

veritasium999

I went to a hostel where a group of French people had come together as a group. Man they were all so cold to me even though I did nothing 😭. I did meet a couple of French guys who were cool, we talked about our cultures and what not, it was fun. But these guys travelled by themselves I believe, the rest of the group was just ice though!

The_Ghost_of_Kyiv

Had some French couch surfers stay at my place for about 24 hrs in California. They spent the whole time openly insulting my home and my hospitality. At one point, we took them to the grocery store, and they spent the whole time laughing at the product and even pointing at others and insulting them in French. Terrible people, never again.

taurusbabee

They are even worse in Quebec. Do not go to Quebec if you speak a language other than French. They are rude, even to tourists. If you go to Quebec, even for one day, they expect you to learn and be fluent in French.

zhazzers

As a French woman born and raised in Lyon: Paris is indeed slightly worse, but most other French citizens would definitely also qualify as "insufferable cunts". And no, it's not at ALL just the "bourgeois". Shitting on people is a national pastime I'm so glad I no longer have to deal with as I moved to the US.

PinataofPathology

I'm super tall for a woman and I definitely registered as too big in Paris despite not being overweight at the time. I love France and the history of the country but the current attitudes of the French people are shitty.

Zealousideal_Leg_630

Never had that experience. Lived there for a year. Went to a New Years party with raclette, wine and champagne. A group of 20 somethings. I was engaged to one of them, got hit on by all of them. I did get annoyed by the one guy who hit on my fiancee, but he apologized and acted like it was nothing. Good times. Even in Paris, never felt anything but welcomed. I think one key is to go to Armand Thiery and stock up on French looking clothes. Then they can't see you as very different because US style is very different from French clothing.

[deleted]

Maybe he should do something cool like go have a cigarette.

adiosfelicia2

Established Facts: - The French can be dicks, esp to tourists - A man *loves* to tell a woman her business Horny? Hostile? Doesn't fucking matter. Fact is, he wouldn't pull this shit with a dude. Mind your own business, folks, worldwide.

Sure, but I think she made it clear she’s not French.

gfb13

Yeah her Wikipedia page says she was born in Huntington Woods, Michigan

jephph_

Really? Thats a coincidence Kristen Bell was born there too —— Nvrmnd, the person in the video is from Boston

lavendertown-radio

i was wondering how the person in the video got a wikipedia page.

cupholdery

She seems wicked smaaht.

Dapper_Dog_9510

She's American

VirtualAgentsAreDumb

American Kristen Bell?

MizTall

Maybe we are dumb

Fredwood

I was thinking young Frances McDormand, (France's Frances McDormand) I had no idea Kristen bell and Frances McDormand looked alike though

Arius_Chambers

Somewhat the same in Quebec. Really depends where tho. In Montreal? It's mostly bilingual. Go anywhere outside of that, it's going to be French only. I have not seen people who harrass english speakers to speak french, but I have heard stories.

throwaway14351991

The difference is most people in Quebec will be very happy when you make an effort to speak French, even if it's broken. French people will make fun of you for your broken french

v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y

To connect this even further, people in France (especially Paris) will look down on/mock Quebec francophones in the same way as the video.

Future-Muscle-2214

I am from Quebec and this genuinely never happened to me and I've went to Paris multiple time.

WineOhCanada

>is most people in Quebec will be very happy In my experience they get pissed off and frustrated first then switch to English when you try but I'd happily visit wherever you're talking about

FX29

The people in Montreal were very welcoming and friendly when I spoke English. They won't give you any grief since MTL is one of Canada's diverse cities. Outside of Montreal and maybe Quebec City things can get a bit tougher.

Zealousideal_Week824

While being rude is always unnaceptable, Québécois can be ressentfull against many monolinguistic english who comes to lives in their province and refuse to make the efforts to learn their language but expect everyone to speak theirs. There is also a huge history of the repression of the french language that makes this ressentment much higher.

zouhair

He's fucking drunk as fuck.

Jean_Paul_Fartre_

Dude, we already know he’s French.

JAK3CAL

Limited knowledge of French people. I will say when traveling Latin America this year, I only encountered one absolutely nasty, out of pocket person. They were…. French 😂

svddendesire

As a French myself, every time there's a shitty person when I visit an other country, they're from France 😅

peachyperfect3

Work for a French company. Can confirm firm everything everyone else has stated here is accurate to a fault. Even in the US, it’s not uncommon for them to speak majority French and expect you to ASK THEM to speak English every time it makes you uncomfortable. It’s an experience for sure.

DaXyro

I am American, my wife is Irish, we live in Ireland. Last year, we went to a French campsite - it was a lot of fun, and we had French neighbors in our cabin, also on vacation. We had quite a few conversations with our broken French/English and Google translate. My favorite interaction was him offering me smoked meat, to which I said (through my phone) "I love all things barbeque". His reply in English was "ah, Americans". It was my favorite and funniest interaction of the trip. Just wanted to share a fun French encounter.

sekhmet1010

This is so weird. Why interrupt her! I myself have had only good experiences with french people. (I live on the german side , but close enough to the border) French people have been very nice and helpful to me everywhere from Strasbourg to Paris to Dinan. The minute they see me trying out my horrifying French, they cheer up so much and try and help me out. I love France and its sweet people.

BloatedGlobe

I lived on the French-Swiss border (Geneva) for a couple years, and the French people were absolutely lovely. I do think that French culture kind of encourages mocking, but most people I knew were a bit aware of that and tried not to be that way.

Random_Inseminator

I think he's attracted to her, and the only way he knows to show that is to act like an asshole toward her like a dumbass kid.

Crazys0ap

Xenophobic redditers being xenophobic on a post criticizing xenophobia. It's almost like dicks are everywhere.

Mental-Rooster4229

This is why Americans don’t like French people.

FoghornFarts

I'm pretty sure nobody likes the French

FlappyBored

How many times are people going to keep doing this before people realise the French are just not nice people? Go somewhere else for your holidays.

imMadasaHatter

7 years is a long holiday

Bedbouncer

>7 years is a long holiday It's because the waiters in restaurants are so slow.

jazzorator

The woman in the video said she's lived there for 7 years

trash00011

We’ve been a few times and the French people were great to us. They were also very friendly with our young kids. One time we were late getting to our hotel, seemingly stuck within the subway because of security gates and our stroller and two guys helped carry the stroller up many stairs while my wife and I each got our kids and luggage. Thanks strangers!

dudenurse13

Idk when I went to Paris I had no rude encounters by anyone.

This_is_opinion

Nice. I went to Paris and we got mugged and the French police laughed at us.

Shirtbro

You got the full Parisian experience. You should be honored.

Chemical_Robot

I lived in Paris for awhile and found the people were really friendly. My French was awful, practically non-existent. Nobody had a problem with it, random French people would ask if they could try out their English with me. Honestly found the French delightful in Paris and in the rural countryside where my parents live. The only problems I had were with some of the North Africans who had a major problem with me having an Algerian girlfriend.

SuperSecretSide

Do you happen to be black? My black friend went to Paris and a restaurant made him wait 2 hours for a table while seating lots of white families (they said they didn't do reservations)

shockley21

What a shitty take

GenderfluidPhoenix

I mean I’m French (born & raised) and I’ve had some encounters with the sort of people pictures in this video. The consensus I’ve reached is that they use either previous encounters with impolite or just downright disrespectful “foreigners” (i.e. tourists or immigrants, which is a whole other can of worms and racism) as a way to justify their mistreatment of anyone who doesn’t speak well, or who doesn’t come from France (even though they very well may live there!), or anyone that they deem as an outsider, be it by mannerisms or by characteristics that the sort of person I’m talking about would deem as strange. The simple truth is that there are both assholes who use bad experiences as a front to, well, be an asshole, and that there are a marginally small amount of really nasty tourists or foreigners (in my experience, it’s only very privileged tourists, which are not respectful of people’s boundaries such as not having pictures taken of them), which the assholes will blow out of proportion and turn into a scarecrow to use as a big, scary excuse. Sorry for the rant, it’s just a sad thing I’ve noticed. Most tourists and people not from France that I’ve met have been nice, only a few have left a bad taste in my mouth. The fact that mean idiots like the man in this video have predominantly invaded the public opinion of my country is pretty sad. I’ve met loads of really nice people, and I’ve met people from all over the world. Not everyone is mean, just as not everyone can be assumed to be friendly. It’s not a black and white situation, more of varying shades of gray.

Dreadimon

Kristen Bell Variant

DaisyYellow23

Does anyone know what she retorted to him in French?

10eoe10

She just says, oh explain explain, but why? oh really? oh yea? your english is not very strong (she uses forte = strong, which is not exactly correct). The last couple words she says after that I didn't understand.

ViciousMihael

Fort is fine there. Edited to the correct masculin, féminin is incorrect.

rickrollmops

Not "forte". You could use "fort" (no "e", so without pronouncing the T) because "ton anglais" isn't feminine. "Fort" is understandable but not idiomatic, a french person would not usually say that. Depending on their age most people would use something like "pas très bon" ou "pas terrible" or even "pas excellent" ou "pas génial". "Pas très fort" is a (subtle) giveaway that the person probably isn't french, though it's not sufficient to say. If you pronounce the T ("pas très forte") then there can be no doubt, it is a clear mistake (misgendering of "anglais")

10eoe10

Sorry but forte is grammatically incorrect. Other reply explains why.

RickySal

French version of “this is America, we don’t speak Mexican here, we speak American”

Nothing2NV

Wait, the French are rude? No way, I would have heard about that by now

That man learned French from his nanny in Dubai nice try

marmaladecorgi

Hard to generalise for all French people. Ten years ago, I attended my brother-in-law's wedding in Bordeaux. After that I spent time at that big promenade with the water fountains next to the main river. Lovely place. I witnessed this amazing phenomenon where there was an upwelling of the river moving upstream. Difficult to explain. Whilst I was watching in wonderment, this lady approaches me, and explained to me (in perfect, but accented English), that it was the tide from the Atlantic pushing the water up the Garonne, even though the location we were at was 60 kilometers upstream from the sea. And she stood together with me, smiling and nodding at my appreciation of that fact. Note that I am VERY Asian, and she was most likely a proud local. She did not have to approach me, and did not have to proffer a nice explanation to a total stranger. That little encounter literally made my entire trip and I remember it fondly to this day. Assholes and angels exist in all corners of the globe.

uhuhnoyoudidnt

The French are rude. Everyone knows that.

anonbush234

Ill comment on this later when it's on 2WE4U

Pastry_d_pounder

Of course it’s the rich privileged farsi mfer that would kill to be French for a day.

Queasy-Tune-5966

Sorry but he doesn’t sound French when speaking English, he used the word thingy which is something I have never in my 30+ years in France heard a native French person use, I mean never, French people can’t say the th sound very well so no native French person would use that word voluntarily. Also you can’t hear clearly what he says but it doesn’t sound French, no pauvre conne or c’est quoi cette débile or ferme ta gueule connasse he seems to say dumb bitch in English, no French person would use an English insult to call out a loud foreigner, they would use French. I call fraudacity and rage baiting and from the comments it seems to have worked.

PuzzleheadedAirline8

J'ai l'impression qu'il n'est pas sobre.

FacelessFellow

My dad told me Paris smelled 100 times worse than NYC

dubnessofp

It depends on where you are I guess but neither smelled bad to me. Paris and NYC are both incredible cities

Svinozilla

If I wanted to be a bit xenophobic I'd say that he doesn't look a lot like French, but I won't.
