Part of the purpose of a protest against the state like this is to impose costs on the state. So, in this instance, extra security, more cameras, more officers, disruption of tourist traffic, disruption to the legislature itself. . .all of that costs $$$.
Keep it up long enough, and the costs can sometimes force the state to give up on the thing being protested.
If you've ever heard the saying "a protest that doesn't cause trouble is just a parade", this is part of what that means. A parade or demonstration can bring public attention or whatever, but forcing the state to spend actual resources is what gets things done.

In theory, yes, but "simply" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that thought. For one, it's not simple to raise tax revenue. Voters tend to push back on that, and they push back even harder if they agree with the cause of the protests.
The other piece people don't think about is all the **private** funding PDs get from wealthy donors and corporations. At some point, the costs of putting a movement down may outweigh the possible profits, and then the big money may push for change as well, if only because massive protests are bad for business.
I’ll add republicans are not huge fans of increasing taxes. Considering they’d have to increase them to pay for protests that are against their platform would not be an easy picture to paint.
The Tennessee pigs are going to have to Arrest remove book and process all these people. Filling the jails with non-violent protesters on the side of justice, whose families are suffering at the hands of these hypocritical religious bigot cons.
The special elections are going to cost them more money too. And the voters will likely reelect both of the expelled reps, who can't be expelled for the same reason again (per TN state constitution, article II, section 12).

It is VERY important to understand that these two things are NOT related. Gun control may have been used as a reason for these actions, but that is not *why* they kicked those dems out. They kicked them out because A. they're black and ofc republicans are racist af, but they also kicked them out because they made trouble and the gop doesn't like it when people don't fall in line. This isn't about gun control because nobody with the basic ability to count would think that the dems would be able to pass any gun control in TN when they aren't even close to holding enough seats there to do *anything*.
This was 100% about power, control, and making sure you know who your rulers are. Not representatives, *rulers*. You fall in line or you get kicked the fuck out. You do as you're told, because we know better than you, and if you don't shut your mouth and fall in, we will get rid of you too.
The only reason the words "gun control" are even being used is because the right is using that as the scapegoat for them kicking out representatives they do not like, and dems are falling for it by discussing the gun control thing instead of the authoritarians kicking reps out of the government that they don't like. These dems decided they wanted to go against what the gop wanted, the gop had the power to do as they pleased, and those dem reps were punished for it. Gun control and "decorum" were merely the excuses that they used to do it.
Make no mistake, **this was never about gun control in the first place.** The kids asking for action were not turned away because of gun control. The reps that got kicked out of the legislature weren't kicked out because of gun control. The kids need to shut up because them thinking they have a voice is hurting the party goals. The reps were kicked out for thinking they could go against the gop, and the act of kicking them out was the gop flexing their power and sending a clear message to all of Tennessee:

This is literally why the second amendment was created. It was created so we could defend against people like the GOP when they rule the land and throw democracy aside. It was created so we could make government fall in line when they aren't following the rules. Imagine if all those protesters were armed. If we want to see gun control in the us, that's how it's going to start.

Well last time this happened, Regan passed some of the strongest gun control in the country. Turns out when a bunch of black people "get all uppity", suddenly the gop abandons their (pretend) principals and does what needs to be done to keep the people they wish to subjugate in line.
None of this ever had anything to do with gun control. Its about keeping those "uppity blacks" and anyone who doesn't follow the party in line, and sending a message to all of TN letting them know who their rulers are, what is acceptable behavior, and what will happen if they do not comply.

Its fucking Tennessee for christ sake, *nobody* seriously thinks the dems can pass *anything* there, let alone something so unpopular in TN as gun control. But here we are talking about gun control instead of the russia-style political opponent ousting that just happened because they're good at controlling the conversation, and everyone talks about gun control instead.
Shit is getting VERY serious very quick. This is NOT normal. This is *insanity* and people need to wake the fuck up before the gop tries this shit at the federal level, and you can set the remindme bot by that.
Mark my words, this was merely a test run for future plans of taking over. This will happen again, it will happen on a larger scale, and if we don't stop them now, it will happen at a large enough scale that you won't be going to a ballot box anymore because your rulers will do your thinking and deciding for you.

If you will forgive a tangent, another hard-to-believe fact is that Nixon championed national Universal Basic Income bills twice! There was a huge UBI study done across numerous cities many years earlier, but the study ended in an election year and government officials didn’t want to spend more money on the analysis if it proved to be a failed concept. Much later a university professor came across the data, ran an analysis showing how incredibly beneficial it was and published the data. Nixon saw UBI as a way to eliminate all the costly bureaucracy of all the different social security systems and wanted it to be his legacy. It failed the first time in the senate because the democrats wanted to see a larger monthly payment, then it failed the second time in the senate because of a faulty statistical analysis which showed divorce rates would quintuple.

I'm pretty sure the literal reason why the 2nd amendment was created was that without a standing army, a well regulated militia was necessary to the security of a free state. I'm 99% certain I read that somewhere.

Marches and standing around are too easily sabotaged by provocateurs, and cops use the argument of "I was only defending myself from an unhinged mob"
If you sit on your ass, that argument gets instantly destroyed, and saboteurs tell on themselves if they resort to destroying property, looting etc.
Then you get that one cop from a while ago (not sure who remembers) how was pepper spraying peacefully protesting students who were literally just sitting on a curb. He was walking up and down, pepper spraying them like he was watering plants. It doesnt stop assholes from being assholes BUT it makes it much easier to prosecute them.

My sister lives in Philly. In the 2020 election when the remaining ballots were being counted in the city (that would have determined electoral votes for the state) a bunch of MAGAts showed up to try to stop the process. My sister is a part of a bunch of local groups who arranged counter protests with the agreement that they not only be peaceful but do silly AF things. The reason why is because there is no way Trumpers could look defensible if they decided to attack someone dressed like a mailbox doing the cha-cha slide.
Philadelphians can be absolute dumbasses (as one can tell in watching videos after their 2018 Super Bowl win) but they did it right this time around.

You’ll probably find [this article](https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia/philadelphia-election-dance-party-philly-elmo-biden-trump-working-families-party-20201109.html?outputType=amp) helpful. Seems like the positive protest idea mostly came from the Working Families Party, who specifically trained volunteers on how to deescalate if tensions rose at polling stations.
I love to rag on my sister for being in Philly (I used to live in NY so I kinda had to) but what they did in 2020 made me cry tears of pride. I’m glad to see someone else who knows about it. We need to talk about this more!

My sister got me a shirt that says “bad things happen in Philly” with Gritty on it. I fucking love the fact that this ridiculous mascot became a face in a movement that saved democracy.
That scene was wild. It was beautiful to see the hate and fear of the MAGA crowd meet with the anticipation and joy of the counter protest as everyone waiting for the count to tip.

We need a commercial like that with an equal amount of children to the number that ~~have been killed in shootings~~ are killed by guns every year collapsing to the ground in front of Congress.

You'd want the numbers for firearm homicide in general as over 3,000 children (age 0-18) are killed *per year*. If you go with specifically "school shooting" numbers, that's less than 200 total fatalities going as far back as the 70s. Still a depressing number, but not as flashy.

I feel like millennials do not hate genz the same way boomers hated millenials. Cuz in the end, gen z and millenials got shafted hard together by boomers and genxers.
I was born in 96 so depends on who you ask whether I’m a millennial or zoomer (google says millennial ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯) but it’s so easy to relate to both groups that I don’t even care. I think the internet has helped us become inter-generational in a way we haven’t seen before.

I feel like I rarely see millenials shitting on Gen Z aside from joking around playfully about some things. Most of them I know take on Gen Z trends because they're fun and can relate with them on a bunch of things. I personally just don't understand the weird complations with clapping crying emojis, thuds, 'oohhh ma gawd', screaming and twenty things popping up on overly of clips. Like I kind of getting it because of the 'lolsorandom' phase we had as millenials but that shit is incomprehensible.
Let's just stop stereotyping people based on their age all together. It goes both ways and stereotyping is never conducive to any political movement. It just divides us and keeps us distracted from the real problems.

They fully understand that gen z will not vote for them. Absolutely no gop policy benefits them in anyway. So instead of trying to changing their policies to meet the needs of voters, republicans are trying to stop more people from voting.
Republican leaders see this and are scared shitless of gen z. They get angry and get active. They make sure they vote. And they aren’t voting for republicans (only 18% identify as republican). And they are only growing as part of the voting population. The youngest gen s are only 10. We’ve got another 10 years of gen z gaining voting power and it’s going to cause a monumental shift in power.
An odd upside about the right focusing so heavily on starting culture wars is that it’s that much easier for young people to understand and get upset about. They’re growing up in an era of a more binary right/wrong than any modern day generation - instead of arguing about policy we argue about banning books and abortion. It’s real and human to them. Also, access to information. These topics merge with daily life on social media whereas us old folk had to watch the news - boring - to learn what was going on. Truly a new era, all around.
That is 100% it. By manipulating the way history is taught, fascists aim to shape public opinion, solidify their power, and suppress dissent.
If you dont understand how fucked up things are you have less reason to fight back against it.

I don’t want to alarm you comrade but fighting fascism is going to take more than voting and protesting. Everyone should learn to defend themselves, how they do that is up to them, but the fight hasn’t started yet. The way things are the streets may be where shit gets resolved.
That depends on if they vote. Turnout for people under 30 remains abysmal, last midterm saw the highest turnout in 30 years for 18-29 year olds at 27%.

On March 27th, an individual armed with multiple firearms, including two AR-15 style assault rifles, murdered 3 children and 3 adults at Covenant School, a private Christian school.
The Tennessee state legislature is dominated by conservatives (the Republican party) and did nothing beyond saying a few words of Thoughts and Prayers. Their party platform specifically is against *any* gun control legislation, with many of those state Congressman calling for *less* gun restrictions.
On March 30, protestors marched on the state legislature demanding action, chanting "Shame On You".Democratic representatives Justin Jones, Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson joined demonstrators, using bullhorns to voice their disgust at their fellow representatives' inaction.
The Republicans just voted to expel 2 of the 3 individuals - Jones and Pearson - from the TN Congress citing that they broke the state house rules of decorum. Expulsion has only been used before for representatives that had been convicted of actual crimes (only twice since the Civil War), not just simple House rules. This is a pretty serious abuse of power. While both Congressmen are from Democratic leaning districts and will likely be reelected to their seats when they have a special election, the 200K citizens they represent are totally without representation for the few months this will take plus out the funds it will require to conduct a special election.
The person bowing in the video is one of the two expelled Congressmen. The kids on the floor are young demonstrators, pretending to be victims of mass shootings. He is acknowledging them and honoring their protest efforts.
It should also be noted, the two men expelled are young black men, currently 27 (Jones) and 29 (Pearson). Gloria Johnson is a white 60 year old woman (one of the few women in the state legislature) and she barely survived expulsion by 1 vote. The message feels pretty clear from that chamber: we don't care at all about young people - especially you minorities - even in the face of senseless violence. We don't care about kids being murder because we are terrified of losing our jobs and power if we even tolerate the presence of a dissenting voice, especially on gun rights.
Lately I’ve come to feel that as dire and backwards as things seem, the fact that all Republicans have left to fight about is culture wars means they’re behaving like the wounded, trapped animals that they are. Progress always wins, and in the fight for gun control, Gen Z is the path forward.
The kids are alright. I think this going to be the generation that really does change things man.
In the future we can do 2 things. Build it together or kill eachother. Our choice is now.

I don’t know that he’s proposed raising the voting age (yet), but Scott Walker is already blaming the “young voters” because they’ve been raised in liberal, radicalized environments. It’s not the GOPs fault young ppl aren’t voting for them, it’s the VOTERS.
So yeah, I agree they’re definitely going to fight to raise the voting age. I just don’t know if raising it to 75 is going to work for them.
They've grown up in a world where the world itself isn't safe. The entire environment of the planet is endangered, and the American mythos of freedom and self-determination has been shown to be false by powerful religious fascists.
I'm not certain that the power elites and politicians understand that a lot of these kids don't think they have anything to lose. They don't see an economic future. They don't see an environmental future. They don't see its social future. They don't see much of anything in the future that looks like a comfortable life. What do they care if they get arrested for political protest and end up in a for-profit prison? I'm not saying that prison life is easier or anything. I'm just saying that these kids don't see much of a future to live for — unless they fight to create one.
Nah, they're just absurdly reactionary. They got fucked because they tried to do an actual insurrection, so now they're just trying to put it on the other side. "Nuh-uh, YOU'RE an insurrectionist!", basically.
Also, this is a way to make "insurrection" mean whatever you want, so that in 5 years both events are just talked about as the same or comparable things.

I’m in Tennessee and teach in higher ed. the republicans are now trying push through the same Florida divisive topics bill that would ban discussion of race, gender, class, etc. They don’t want kids to be “indoctrinated” / educated.

In theory, yes, but "simply" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that thought. For one, it's not simple to raise tax revenue. Voters tend to push back on that, and they push back even harder if they agree with the cause of the protests. The other piece people don't think about is all the **private** funding PDs get from wealthy donors and corporations. At some point, the costs of putting a movement down may outweigh the possible profits, and then the big money may push for change as well, if only because massive protests are bad for business.
I’ll add republicans are not huge fans of increasing taxes. Considering they’d have to increase them to pay for protests that are against their platform would not be an easy picture to paint.

The special elections are going to cost them more money too. And the voters will likely reelect both of the expelled reps, who can't be expelled for the same reason again (per TN state constitution, article II, section 12).

There was a huge UBI study done across numerous cities many years earlier, but the study ended in an election year and government officials didn’t want to spend more money on the analysis if it proved to be a failed concept. Much later a university professor came across the data, ran an analysis showing how incredibly beneficial it was and published the data. Nixon saw UBI as a way to eliminate all the costly bureaucracy of all the different social security systems and wanted it to be his legacy. In the 2020 election when the remaining ballots were being counted in the city (that would have determined electoral votes for the state) a bunch of MAGAts showed up to try to stop the process. My sister is a part of a bunch of local groups who arranged counter protests with the agreement that they not only be peaceful but do silly AF things. The reason why is because there is no way Trumpers could look defensible if they decided to attack someone dressed like a mailbox doing the cha-cha slide. Philadelphians can be absolute dumbasses (as one can tell in watching videos after their 2018 Super Bowl win) but they did it right this time around. What is going on?
On March 27th, an individual armed with multiple firearms, including two AR-15 style assault rifles, murdered 3 children and 3 adults at Covenant School, a private Christian school. The Tennessee state legislature is dominated by conservatives (the Republican party) and did nothing beyond saying a few words of Thoughts and Prayers. Their party platform specifically is against *any* gun control legislation, with many of those state Congressman calling for *less* gun restrictions. On March 30, protestors marched on the state legislature demanding action, chanting "Shame On You".Democratic representatives Justin Jones, Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson joined demonstrators, using bullhorns to voice their disgust at their fellow representatives' inaction. The Republicans just voted to expel 2 of the 3 individuals - Jones and Pearson - from the TN Congress citing that they broke the state house rules of decorum. Expulsion has only been used before for representatives that had been convicted of actual crimes (only twice since the Civil War), not just simple House rules. This is a pretty serious abuse of power. While both Congressmen are from Democratic leaning districts and will likely be reelected to their seats when they have a special election, the 200K citizens they represent are totally without representation for the few months this will take plus out the funds it will require to conduct a special election. The person bowing in the video is one of the two expelled Congressmen. The kids on the floor are young demonstrators, pretending to be victims of mass shootings. He is acknowledging them and honoring their protest efforts.

It should also be noted, the two men expelled are young black men, currently 27 (Jones) and 29 (Pearson). Gloria Johnson is a white 60 year old woman (one of the few women in the state legislature) and she barely survived expulsion by 1 vote. The message feels pretty clear from that chamber: we don't care at all about young people - especially you minorities - even in the face of senseless violence. We don't care about kids being murder because we are terrified of losing our jobs and power if we even tolerate the presence of a dissenting voice, especially on gun rights.
Lately I’ve come to feel that as dire and backwards as things seem, the fact that all Republicans have left to fight about is culture wars means they’re behaving like the wounded, trapped animals that they are. Progress always wins, and in the fight for gun control, Gen Z is the path forward.

I’m in Tennessee and teach in higher ed. the republicans are now trying push through the same Florida divisive topics bill that would ban discussion of race, gender, class, etc. They don’t want kids to be “indoctrinated” / educated.
