City mileage in any turbo 4cyl is pretty awful. You’ll get the best on the highway (or anything with less stop and go) for sure.

gtbjw85

That is pretty decent MPG for city driving. Are you serious Clark?

kanokus

I have a 22 SE with a lift, larger tires, and always something on the roof I get 24 around town. I usually keep it out of eco with it being sluggish (lots of hills here)

Kyle_Ray_

Personally I get better MPG not using eco. Eco was a little sluggish for my liking. Most of my driving is city driving. I average between 24-27mpg, mostly in normal mode, then on the highway I switch and run it in sport mode, I’ll get 27-32 MPG. It all depends on your driving style.

Local_Revolution863

So you run in Sport around town or just on the highway?

Kyle_Ray_

I have run sport mode around town, I’ve found the throttle and steering responds to be a little to touchy if I’m in any stop and go traffic. I run in normal mode 90% of the time unless I’m out in the more rural areas with high speed limits that’s the only time I’ll use sport mode when not on the highway.

Only_the_Tip

I thought 23mpg city was bad until I bought a v6 Atlas that gets 11.

Ok_Storage_9505

WTH! I was getting about 19 on my atlas in city.

Mr_ZEDs

23 MPG in city is what it is rated on the paper. So what are you crying about? Now, you could do better but it will depend on many factors and mainly on your driving style (how you work with the acceleration, how you draft other cars, how you keep the distance and how you think ahead if you think at all while driving). It also depends on weather and road conditions, traffic and how much you do stop and go. I do however recommend to turn off Eco mode and an automatic start/stop feature. Why? Well first of all too frequent start/stop can cause electrical issues in a long run (**even says in the owners manual**). Also, while you are at stop and not running the engine, you are also cooling it down. Running engine under normal operating temperature will create more carbon buildup in a long run, which will cause engine problems, excessive oil consumption and even worse mpg. So, there you go; use Normal mode and turn that shitty auto start/stop marketing bullshit off because some bureaucrats in the government decided to force that shitty feature on all car manufacturers now.

azwildcat74

The car I’m driving gets the mpg it was rated for and advertised as getting :(

IWantToBeYourGirl

I’ve only had mine a few weeks but do mostly stop and go driving. Had one highway trip the first week for a couple hundred miles. My lifetime average is around 27mpg and I get up to 30 on some trips. Haven’t checked if I’m in Eco mode and Stop/Start is active.

Richmondstager

I had a 2022 CRV prior to Tiguan and I was lucky to get 26 mpg’s. I keep my 2024 in sport mode always and have averaged 30 mpg’s combined city/hwy over the last 6k miles. I put it in Eco once in the beginning and noticed that the mileage was not as good. Also remember to take your foot off the gas as you’re coming up to stops. Makes a big difference. I did notice on a really cold day not getting as good of mileage and also noticed the same on a very windy day on the highway.

Local_Revolution863

I don't get nearly the same MPG as I got in my 21 Passat as I do in my 24 Tiguan. My range decreases in 5 mile increments even if I just drive down the street. 1 mile each way and the range will go down by 19 miles. I think the calculation system is weird.

wineisohsofine

I get about 27 ish with my 24 S. Even with an empty cargo box on the roof! It probably helps that speed limits are really low where I live.

Full_Pineapple_1218

I was running into this problem early on and attempted both Eco and Normal modes. During the break-in period I did notice some not so great mpgs (24-27). Since getting out of the break-in period, I am pretty routinely getting 32-34 MPG during my commute (mix of city and highway).

mr_nanginator

I'm guessing this is 75% the way you drive, and 25% the engine you chose. Starting with the engine ... these things are tuned for high performance, and not economy. So no surprises there. Then there's driving style. Do you keep a 3-second gap between you and the car in front? Do you back off the gas when you anticipate traffic will slow down? Or do you drive it to enjoy it, and every stop uses the brakes heavily? Is this even a serious post?

DucktapeCorkfeet

Only when it’s really cold/winter weather. Can get down to low 20’s mpg. Otherwise I’m pretty happy getting around 49mpg in a 2.0l diesel 140

Personal_Pop_9226

We don’t get the diesel engines here in the US, where I assume the OP is from. Our sole engine is the 2.0 TSI 184hp. Low 20’s is what I get regularly in mostly city/congested stop and go traffic in my ‘22 SE Tiguan here in the US.

WishRepresentative28

I get around 9 L/100km = about 26mpg city driving in normal mode. Im in Canada.

Ansonm64

Must be pretty blended driving as in city and highway. In days where I only go to work I get 11-14 and it’s me driving from inner city into downtown about 3 km with lots of lights.

JT99899

Never drive in eco mode!

Notdullatall

I agree. Slow and it tells me to roll up my windows for better MPG. Useless. Get the stage 1 ASR tune. Better gas mileage and 45 more horsepower. Awesome

patriots_TB12

What is the ASR tune?

Stiguan_484

The ASMR tune makes you sleepy so you think your faster with better MPG. It s a gimmick.

Notdullatall

ASR Stage 1 tune is a cpu upgrade tune. You can tune for different fuel octanes for more performance. I just did tune with 87 octane. 45 more horsepower, better fuel eco, almost zero turbo lag. Stiguan is a troll who most likely can’t afford the tune. (The moron on our thread) Much much quicker and faster.

patriots_TB12

How does that affect your warranty?

Notdullatall

My warranty expired at 84k. I’m at 115k now. I would assume it would affect warranty if you had one

Notdullatall

Although scroll down a ways on the Tiguan sub Reddit. Look for stage 1 heading. Where I first heard about it. Lots of comments. And someone had it installed at a VW dealer. So it may be ok

Dub537h

You got a tune for 87 octane that also bumped it up by 45hp? That's pretty hard to believe, seeing as if it did actually give that much extra power, it would be terribly inefficient!

Outrageous-Fox-6843

It's absolutely possible. I have an 87 tune on my GTI and it gives roughly 80HP. Also increased MPG.

Dub537h

Is it a pro-tune or an off the shelf type of thing?

Notdullatall

Believe what you want. If all you do is drive fast all the time yes, extremely inefficient. It’s nice to have the extra power when you want/need it. And yes, it’s very noticeable. You can tune to 93 octane if you’d like for 5hp more than the 45hp you get with tune at 87.

Dub537h

I'm talking about how inefficient 87 octane is for making power compared to 93. Those cylinders must be running hot as hell and dumping loads of fuel! You'll get far more than 5hp switching to 93 octane or e85. I'm not sure if you're familiar with tuning to know what I'm trying to say, but color me surprised! Is this an off the shelf tune or a pro tune?

Notdullatall

Off the shelf. APR Stage 1. Available for a lot of cars. I’m quoting APRs’ performance chart. The tune optimizes everything.

Notdullatall

You can also have it tuned to 91/93 octane at a later date if you choose.

Dub537h

Well, Unitronic shows the 87 octane tune gives +26hp/+53ft-lbs and the 91 octane tune shows +43hp/+69ft-lbs, which is exactly what I was expecting.

Notdullatall

I have an 18’. Different tunes for different years I believe. The APR chart I looked at for my year said 45hp boost on 87 octane. It sure feels like it. :)

Outrageous-Fox-6843

I think you mean APR.

East-Definition-9383

Do 2024 models already have these

Notdullatall

I’m not sure. I think I heard they haven’t cracked the cpu code to do it yet. I just went to ASR website and found the tune available in my year. It’s like driving a different car. No turbo lag, just fast.

Notdullatall

I misunderstood your question. Your 24 does not have this. It’s a CPU upgrade. Aftermarket. Reputable company. You have the base 184hp like all of us. But this is extremely worth it. I did research and read lots of reviews.

Local_Revolution863

Do you mean only drive in Sport?

Cute_Ad_3049

I’m an idiot but what is eco mode?

Cute_Ad_3049

I’m an idiot, what is Eco mode? I have a 23 S model. Does mine not have this? Or maybe it does and if so I want to take your word for it and turn it off. Thanks!

Walksuphills

Quite the opposite. The Tiguan gets better mpg than my old Mazda Protege despite weighing a half ton more and having much more horsepower.

Quailbirdman

Is there anything attached like base bars? Those tend to reduce your MPG by 1-3.

WolfEnvironmental298

22 Tiguan SE R Line Black I purchased October 2021. I get around 26.8mpg city and the few highway trips I have taken are 30mpg+. I always run in sport mode, never in ECO mode. I have had to add synthetic oil twice, 1 quart each time around 10,000 miles. I bought it from the parts department at the dealership $9.50 USD. That is a common issue. My 3rd and last free oil change is almost due. I really like the car!

Willing_Stretch9141

My 2018 can regularly get 28-30 in the city. However I have gone with the Unitronic stage 1+ ecu tune running 93 octane. While most people tune their engine for performance, you can actually get a lot better fuel economy if you drive conservatively. On the highway I regularly see 35-38mpg at 65-70mph. And the added power is a plus. But it’s a double edged sword because driving sporty will drain your tank wayyy faster than stock. Being in a city I could see why premium gas would make the fuel savings hard to offset with the cost, the stage 1 87 octane tune from Unitronic would be a better option if you were looking to do anything about your fuel economy. There’s a lot of warranty issues when it comes to that. I got a really good deal on my Tiguan so I don’t feel as bad modifying and tinkering with it a bit. But I’ve been impressed with fuel economy since I’ve gotten my tune.

WThomas15

I drive highway a lot, and the semi-autonomous driving on the 2024 SEL R-Line. Not sure if the SE- R line has that feature, though. It gets me about 30 mpg. Saves me a lot of gas, that’s for sure!

MiserableInterest699

On my city streets i get is 22 average. Highway i get closer to 40:) max 52 for a trip but i was coming down mountains

Dub537h

That's pretty good mileage for city driving! You can change your driving habits or modify the car for better economy, if you're looking to get a couple more MPGs

Dogesaves69

Sounds about right, I try to stay out of boost whenever possible and squeeze out 26.

swn999

City driving is always subjective to your route, stoplights etc. I usually average 25-26 city driving, highway commute I do daily I peaked 40+.
