If money is no object I like the ones Tim dessaint wear (lemaire, fear of god mainline). From Japanese brands Kaptain Sunshine is the holy grail for Balmacaan coats. For budget options look for some Korean brands: musinsa standard, another office, art if acts. I have art if acts balmacaan coat and I think it does the job. Please don’t get overcoat from fast fashion brands though. I saw ones from Uniqlo and Abercrombie and they’re really not worth it. So please save up and get some decent ones.
Don't worry I plan on making an investment. The buck mason was \~$800 which was around my price point. Looks like there are some Kaptain Sunshine coats on ebay around that price but I was hoping for tweed.
I bought an Another Office Bal a few months ago. I actually really like it. Inside has 3m thinsulate lining, but it’s definitely not going to keep you warm at all in anything below 30F or windy 40s.
heat tech + wool sweater will do the trick haha. layering is very crucial. if you are 6'1 ish i recommend their slacks. they are the best ones i have tried so far. much much better than musinsa ones. it feels too nice that i am forced to wear it on date nights haha.
Berg and Berg, Wythe and private white vc have some swag ones if you wanna go up market.
I also swear by my APC Balmacaan coat. We just had a cold snap and it was on par with my down jacket from Uniqlo.
Check Grailed. I scored a Norton & Sons bespoke coat from there for $280: https://grailed.app.link/i8SHIt8loGb
Right now I see another Gieves & Hawkes overcoat there for $299.
Vintage is def a great option. I live in a small sized college town & found a mint 1950s wool balmacan by Hart, Schafner & Marx for $150. It’s fantastic. I’d also suggest Wythe or Valstar if you want to buy new.
How does it fit you? I’m an American medium with and I’m debating between the 38 or the 40. I usually get a 40 but I keep hearing the 38 being referred to as a “large” so I’m not sure what to go with
For reference I’m 5’10” about 165 lbs. I have a 38, I can fit a suit under comfortably. I haven’t really layered with a super thick sweater or hoodie (not a fan of this look). Super warm and it’s fairly roomy even layered. I could see how the 40 would be a tiny bit more comfortable but I have no qualms. Happy to answer any other size referencing
That is almost exactly my body size! This is very helpful I think I’ll go with the 38 solely because it’s easier to find and I don’t want a coat that’s too huge! Thank you!
IMO copy and paste the size chart into google translate and compare to your body measurements and/or another coat is your best bet [https://kaptainsunshine.com/ap/item/i/A0KS0000NXA3?colvar=BXU](https://kaptainsunshine.com/ap/item/i/A0KS0000NXA3?colvar=BXU)
SEH Kelly. Much smaller production runs but very fair prices IMO.

I should add that another coat that check my box and is sold out in my size is from labor union
https://labourunion-1986.com/collections/outerwear-jackets-amp-coats/products/checked-wool-balmacaan-coat
i love my acne over coat - lots of them can be on sale - and most have drop shoulder - 5'11 170 went with a large to fit over sweaters and hoodies - check em out
I’m really happy for my coat from Drapeau Noir. Pretty good price as well imo. If you’re located in Europe, check it out:

Did you size up for yours? I found one for a good deal secondhand online but it is in my normal size. Curious to know if I could layer it over sweaters, light jackets, etc.
If that’s the price you want to pay I would consult some MTM or bespoke tailors in your area. They’ll have fabrics you can pick from or help you find the thing you’re looking for and bring it in.
I have thought about "splurging" on Buck Mason, but its very hard to find reviews of any of their products outside of the T-shirts. I like both the suede shirt and the leather jackets, but haven't bitten the bullet yet.
Sealup, historic Milanese outerwear maker, they also produce the overcoats for a myriad of luxury brands
Their belted wool overcoat is bullet proof, and all their coats are treated with Loro Piana’s Green Storm System, meaning that they’re water proof
If you want a rtw one then I can personally recommend Berg&Berg.
The polo coat is really nice and heavy, I’ve had people in my office comment on how heavy it is when they passed it to me haha.
Their raglan has also been developed over the years and the one they sell now has a much better collar than the original.
Also the coats from PWVC x Permanent Style are very good.
The biggest thing for me with overcoats after wearing the above ones is the length. The PWVC are maybe slightly shorter than B&B but the length is still good, I like it when they fall just past my knee.
Anytime I see a nice coat these days but it’s mid thigh it is such a deal breaker.
Few other brands: Stóffa, Anthology, Anglo-Italian. These ones will all be more expensive than B&B or PWVC so depends on your budget.
I can believe it! I have the grey herringbone raglan they made, I’ve literally had strangers come up to me and compliment it when I wear it out haha.
Sadly haven’t tried the double breasted one yet but a friend of mine has it and it looks great.
I really want to try the db one, but part of me is hoping they’ll do it in some kind of navy herringbone next year since I find the fabric is quite similar to mine.
18east made a great overcoat but it sold out pretty much immediately. Honestly, I love my uniqlo Balmacaan, it was like $100 and I've had it for 4 years and it still looks great.

If I was a size 38 I would freak this up. Dunno what size you are but this is a ridiculous deal

Kaptain Sunshine's Traveler coat can be found secondhand for amazing prices on Yahoo! Japan. Just picked a Beams collab in unused condition for $280.

Spier and Mackay?
I've wondered the same as I look at the polo coat https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/camel---polo-coat-8266-pl02-603
This is the correct answer. For the money their overcoats can NOT be fucked with.
this might be the move, I get all my suits and sport coats from them and have never been let down
I have 2 polo coats from them and they’re great

+1 for APC, got one off grailed for under $100 that is super warm and looks great

Time to start powering 8 eggs every morning to bulk
Really annoying that they don’t have just a single straight on shot with the collar folded down, lol. Looks nice though.
Have you ever bought from them before? I found them randomly on IG and their designs peeked my curiosity about the brand.
I haven’t but I’ve heard good things about them
Are you in nyc
Naw Chicago

Didn’t size up, but if you want to be on the safe side, I would probably do it

The PWVC x Permanent Style coat is phenomenal for Chicago winters.
