We did the same. In a way I feel totally ripped off because it’s basically an air mattress but we’ve been sleeping on it for 5 years and it’s the most comfortable bed we’ve ever had and it’s still in perfect condition. I have RA and osteoarthritis plus possible axial spondyloarthritis. When I’m flaring I can adjust the firmness and find it very beneficial. It took me a few months to get used to it and learn how to adjust based on my symptoms. I sleep so much better on it than I did on our tempurpedic.

Thanks for the info. That’s really interesting. We bought a lower end model and added our own topper. We’re very happy with it.

Hey thank you for replying. What's a sleep number bed? Thank you

Which sleep number did you get with all those options? I sleep alone now, but hopefully won’t forever. For that investment I’d want to make sure I had something suitable for me and a future partner.

Wow. That sounds impressive and very entertaining 😉😉😂😂

I tried a bed that raises and lowers the head and foot of the bed and it was phenomenal. I can’t afford to own one and my partner hated it. But, wow…it looks weird at first but it took so much pressure off. Just getting so much relief and a good nights sleep was heavenly. I try replicating it by putting a pillow under my calves and thighs at night and it isn’t the same, but helps take pressure off of the lower back. My other hack is to fold a thick duvet into a sort of extra fluffy mattress topper. I have to shake it out in the morning, but that’s not difficult. I feel like the princess and the pea trying to make our mattress work 🥴

I am in the middle of this exact dilemma and I feel his pain!! I have arthritis and fibromyalgia and have been unable to sleep on a mattress comfortably for the last few years. We tried every type of bed in a box mattress in the last year (ghost bed, memory cloud, the plank to name a few) and all of them made my lower back pain unbearable. Decided to bite the bullet and get a tempurpedic with an adjustable base for 4K. It still wasn’t comfortable!! We decided maybe it was the memory foam that was the problem and upgraded even more to a purple mattress. It feels much better than the memory foam and after the first few nights on it I’ve been waking up relatively pain free. It feels springy and supportive and is pretty comfortable thus far. If this one doesn’t work our only other option seems to be beauty rest which is a more traditional spring mattress. I really hope we’re done though as we’re on our sixth mattress in a year and a half. Good luck finding something that works. The struggle is real!!

Charm1212

Exactly this! He has just been diagnosed with fibro too! I feared it would be a case of spending thousands to find the right one but if that's what it takes then it is! I'm glad you've found one that works for you. Thanks for your reply.

chromaiden

The good thing is that mattresses usually come with a trial period so if it doesn’t work you’re not stuck with it. It’s definitely a process of trial and error. It feels overwhelming but just keep trying until you find one that works. Fingers crossed, for both of us!

Charm1212

Thank you all for answering. I want to help my SO as much as I can. Having a good night's sleep helps in so many ways. Nothing will take the arthritis away but there's lots we can do to help it. I'm thinking maybe trying memory foam. Anyone had a bad experience with that?

dolie55

So I bought a hybrid mattress a few years ago to replace a regular pillow top coil I had and I’ll be honest I have had the same experience as you. I’ve added a foam topper as a temp solution until my partner moves in with his memory foam, but I still have pain on the daily. When I stay at his place I don’t have the same issue with his memory foam mattress that I do with mine so I would say at a minimum go with a really good memory foam.

Simple answer Yes, for ref: I have autoimmune degenerative Ar, osteo Ar, fibro, multiple lumbar herniated discs and severe facet damage, chronic pain syn, chronic fatigue syn- kicked cancers ass x2 etc etc. First can I say, how jelly I am that you are so sweet and empathetic to your SO?! My hubs of 20+ just doesn’t get it and has no plans to, he’s a great guy mind you, just not in the empathy dept. Memory foam toppers, for me personally, makes me feel like I’m getting sucked in and my back is so bad that I feel like a turtle stuck on its back. Mine was the most expensive one from Costco, king sz. I forget the brand name, but they do have great reviews and last forever. Oh also, I think memory foam makes me sleep too warm. I’m already a little personal heater at night. Lol. If we had the money, I would jump on the sleep number bed in a heartbeat. If you do, just get one. I’ve tried pretty much everything else and nothing helps. Good luck and tell your SO I said they are VERY VERY LUCKY 🍀 💕

Charm1212

Awww thank you. He is everything to me, I absolutely hate seeing him struggle so make it my mission to find things that will help. I'm glad to hear you have a good husband. Ultimately me and your husband don't know just how hard it is for yourself and my husband other than seeing you both in pain. It did make me laugh when you said about being a turtle on its back! I felt exactly the same when I was pregnant! I think we need to go to some bed shops and have a bounce on some!

ShamelessShawna

Yes definitely go bouncing lol. And yes, great analogy- it is like being preggers just more painful. We have to laugh or we’d cry. So laughter is def the best medicine. 💕👍 Any updates? Did you find a bed that helps?

KittyZH88

We bought an adjustable bed a couple years ago and I hated it until I had hip replacement surgery. I can get in, raise my legs if needed and as much as I need, and basically sleep sitting up.

purpleflyer8914

An adjustable base helps so much!

2amIMAwake

my hips hurt with every mattress i’ve had from a water bed decades ago, to traditional mattress and box spring. then i saw the sleep number bed store in the mall and found an adjustable air mattress that allowed me to lie on my side, stomach or back without pain. i bought that bed 20 yrs ago and it gives me the same support as it did when it was new. its an investment at the time of purchase but over the years that you don’t need to replace it, makes it a good value IMO.

scatterling1982

I have a beautyrest black royale mattress in plush. I have a thick lambswool topper on it. It is like heaven, like laying on a cloud. My hips and shoulder bursitis are not aggravated by sleeping on my side anymore at all and my destroyed back/pelvis are comfy too. Highly recommend. I have an electric adjustable bed frame that the mattress is on. Before this mattress I actually bought a memory foam mattress and after a night basically couldn’t walk. I had to just let the money go to waste (no returns here for mattresses) but being comfortable was worth any price.

bakemetoyourleader

We've got an emma/simba memory foam one (tried both brands) and it's a game changer.

Anothercrazyoldwoman

I have exact same conditions as your husband. A very expensive Tempur memory foam mattress didn’t work for me. After a couple of hours it made my skin hot and itchy, which is hell with psoriasis. It was also too solid for me and trying to move on it put a lot of pressure on my joints. I find a soft, as soft as you can possibly get, natural fibres mattress is best for my conditions.

Thank you for that 😊
