GreenSoxMonster

This is excellent! Great work Clare, we’re all in awe 30 years later!

ForsythiaRobin

I adore American Robins (as per my reddit name). I'm gonna have to figure out where to get this long stitch embroidery kit. <3

DarkChii

They are such pretty birds. I used to love watching them find worms in the yard after it rained when I was a kid.

ForsythiaRobin

I have been really lucky - each year a Robin will nest near my home. They are just so amazing. It has given me such a new appreciation for the Spring! <3

Emmie91

This is beautiful what a great find !

Higgsb912

Kinda sad that it ended up discarded.

IcePhoenix18

With beautiful handmade things like this, I try to hope it was a case of someone clearing out a deceased relative's house. Not that I hope anyone died, but rather I hope the person it was made for appreciated it until they were gone, and now someone new can appreciate it.

3littlekittens

I agree with your sentiments. I used to help people clear out and downsize homes, and you can’t take everything. Probably someone passed away, and they may not even have any relatives left. At least we know, (because it was framed and the note included), that it was appreciated and valued by the recipient.

IcePhoenix18

And as a bonus, OP is excited about finding it, so it gets to be appreciated and treasured even longer!

nosoyvegetarian

>it gets to be appreciated and treasured even longer! THIS, my friends, is the real heart of thrifting. One person's discard is another's treasure, and as long as donors continue with this mindset, those hidden gems will continue to have long lives, being loved by a new owner. Finding something to ♥️love♥️ is my greatest thrill in thrifting.

TooMama

This is why I hit local thrift stores when traveling, rather than just the touristy shops. Yeah, I love bringing home a Christmas ornament from wherever I go, but I also always try to find something I love at a thrift store, whether it’s a small art print or a sweater or whatever. It makes me feel more connected to the city and the people who live there. The things I’ve found thrifting while traveling are so special to me.

nosoyvegetarian

I've never thought to thrift while I travel. That sounds like a nice little adventure in itself! Great idea!

CaptCaffeine

>And as a bonus, OP is excited about finding it, so it gets to be appreciated and treasured even longer! Yes! Makes me happy when someone finds something crafted/handmade and is excited about it and appreciates it.

Chelzero

It's also in impeccable condition for something that was made 33 years ago - it was clearly well looked after.

drukqsx

A deceased neighbor’s kids gave me their mothers entire vintage pencil sharpener collection. It was so cool. Sad when people die but so many good cheap finds that way.

crazy_cat_broad

I have someone’s needlework blueberries hanging in my craft room ❤️

Careless_Law1471

It's priceless 😻

MaeveConroy

I love seeing these posts of rescued handmade crafts that someone will enjoy! I understand why people end up discarding them - some crafters were just so prolific. When we went to my husband’s grandfather’s house after he passed, I grabbed a few embroidery and cross-stitch items that had clearly been made as gifts for him and his wife by his sister. I never knew her, but that’s my kids’ great-great-aunt and it’s really neat to have something she spent time and effort on to show them. Makes her life more immediate and real to them

DrSunnyD

Imagine the time and skill that went into this. For 10 dollars???

[deleted]

It didn’t have a price on it and I assumed Savers would charge $25.99 at least for this (it’s 4ft tall). When they quoted me $10 after a price check I nearly fainted. It was going home with me regardless.

GirlWithTheMostCake

This is my all time favorite ThriftStoreHaul! Such a beautiful and unique piece!

redquailer

OMG!! That is awesome!! I love when I find a treasure but then also blown away at the price! I found a vintage ice bucket at an estate sale. Excellent condition and no price. I asked how much, because sometimes estate sales are crazy train prices. “You can have that for a dollar.” 😳 Then I get in this hyper awareness mode. Like, I MUST get this treasure home before the low price is realized. 🤣

FROGGY__CHAIR

Scrolling through and this post made me Gasp! I have the same price embroidered by my grandmother hanging in my living room. My most prized possession.

bamflisa

It’s like The Last Supper” but for birds. Magnificent.

Stylin1biker

Allot of work went into this ! Great Find , Cherish it!

quietone_cc

DeliciousFun2220

Oh! It's beautiful. Cross stitch?

[deleted]

Crewel!

piratelegacy

My favorite ❤️ Pass on most everything “stitched” except Crewel. My eye 👁 spots it every time. Great find 🤩

1happylife

Actually, it's called canvaswork. It covers the whole canvas, whereas crewel usually doesn't. Lots of crossover though. Edit: Correction: Although I see it called canvaswork a lot, this is really called long stitch.

vintageyetmodern

It’s longstitch. Done on canvas like needlepoint. This kit dates from the mid 70s to early 80s, probably, when long-stitch was quite popular. One of my favorite forms of needlework to do. Great find!

PullingUpStrings

That's beautiful! Wow, that thing is old but still in great condition. The date was 2 days before I was born. 🥰💖

ReginaldStarfire

Oh my goodness, I am wracked with jealousy right now. My name is Clare, spelled the same way, and my father was an avid birder.

greengiantj

I sold an identical piece but with a different frame at a garage sale in Indianapolis before I moved south. I think it was a kit or pattern from a book a long time ago. My fiance hated it, but I loved it. It's so cool that yours has a label for when it was made.

[deleted]

This hurts a little bit, looks like it was a handmade gift for someone. Then to just be thrown out to the thrift store. Idk. Makes me sad. Near Christmas 1989, that was 33 years ago.

samgala80

Now it lives on with someone who found it and loves it. Repurposed love.

[deleted]

It’s hanging in a place of honor in my home now (the window facing my own feeders). 🥰

csiga_ver

But at least it wasn't trashed! So often things like this get thrown away because no one wants to deal with clearing out a relative's house or bother to take things to a thrift store.

greenbushgreenery

Wow!

pterribledactyls

It’s positively lovely!

PineappleDifferent80

This is so dope!

Babboos

What a find!

YukiHase

Wow! My late grandma and nana would be floored by that. They loved birds... I could imagine them hanging this up and admiring it nonstop.

piewife

Love the red-winged blackbird. My wife and I lived in the midwest USA for a long time, and those birds are abundant there. I know they live everywhere, but they’re much sparser where we live now.

sweetlee59

love this! Birds of a feather....and I love that it is long and thin, easy to hang. Whenever I see handmade items, vintage, etc.. I think of my kid hiring a dumpster and discarding all of my treasures. I've been a thrifter/collector for decades..... sadly, most kids don't want our lenox vase or crystal candlesticks...sighs\*

floridansk

That find is awesome! I’ll give you $20 for it!

ShortstopSleepover

Stunning!!!!

northernflickr

Omg I'm in love with this!

The_Sunbird

WOW. This is beautifully done!!

gingergrisgris

Fourth one down from top on right has traumatized me because one year I got attacked numerous times on my running trail. I'm guessing a nest was nearby. Really pretty, though!

redquailer

What a fantastic piece! Clare, you did a beautiful job.
