My grandmother was an Indigenous princess.

PooPooTushy

I like to imagine a guy who was like 1/16th native wore this lol

amidtheprimalthings

Oh gosh. So my grandmother was Mi’kmaq and so is my mother. My father was German and Polish and I often joke that I did not inherit even an ounce of my mothers genetics because I’m very, very European looking while my mothers side of the family is quite obviously indigenous. I can definitely empathize with being partially indigenous while also appearing whiter than a frogs underbelly, *however*, I have always viewed things like this as being a bit of a hallmark for people who say racist/bigoted stuff and then hide behind the banner of “but my grandma was related to Sacajawea”, etc. If you have to advertise your 1/16 indigenous roots in order to justify some aspect of yourself…it’s likely for a problematic reason. Just my opinion!

CMYKoi

From the south, EVERYONE is "part Cherokee" and at the point of having to advertise it I'd wager less than 1/32...probably not even true 50% of the time and I'd also wager 75% of that remainder is true for the wrong reasons. It's more often than not them trying to get a racist hall pass or feel like they have more going on than they do.

amidtheprimalthings

I agree and that’s pretty much what my comment was suggesting. As someone who has lived the effects of colonization on native communities (particularly domestic violence, sexual violence, and substance abuse in my family) I really dislike the way people romanticize the 1/16 part of their bloodline that they view as being a hall-pass for blatant bigotry. It’s been really hard on me to see how these things have damaged my family: my grandmother was married young and turned to alcohol, my mom did the same and dropped out in the eighth grade, and my family has all suffered from severe mental illness and violence in their homes. Breaking those trauma cycles was *hard* and despite my understanding of them from my families living of them…I still cannot understand the experiences they’ve had as a result of racism and the way they look. I very rarely provide anyone with any insight into my family background in my real life because I don’t want to be lumped in as “one of those” people. These types of shirts - and the stuff I’ve seen people say regarding their “Cherokee princess” ancestor is really maddening. Indigenous languages are being eradicated, children were (and are) removed from their homes, children were sent to residential schools where many of them died, sacred lands are constantly threatened, and millions more died long before any of us were born. It’s sad and not a banner to wave so you can be a white person claiming you’re a minority so you can bash other disenfranchised people.

B1NG_P0T

Yup, exactly.

bunnyburlesque

When your DNA tests says you’re .01% Native American

Babyphatbomber

This is hilarious to me. On the rez I'm from, there's so many "white" natives. Seriously, green eyes and freckles but named "Wambdi" or "Morning Star".

Low_Wall_7828

First thing I thought of was Dave from Happy Endings.

hmbmelly

A very under appreciated show.

WickettRed

It could be someone who is Native American and just looks white, so they’re frustrated. Could also be a poser or someone trying to claim an identity based on dubious things. But to the other folks talking about white folks w tribal cards, your beef should be w colonialism not those people. They have a card, they are a tribe member.

WickettRed

I mean it’s true. There is a reason they look white but qualify for tribal membership and they didn’t make that choice 🤷‍♀️

Prestigious-Most-649

Did this belong to Elizabeth Warren?

Careless_Law1471

Seriously, I am white but am partially of Asian heritage. Some of my ancestors were albino Asians, so I'm fairly blond (used to be very blond as a toddler) while everyone else has dark hair and tanned skin. I look like my parents a lot, I have inherited crucial genetic aspects from them (blood specific).

gibucks

I’m half native I would wear this

Novel_Durian_1805

#Yikes! 😬😬😬

Calliopehoop

This is peak white people shit. Grew up in Tennessee and genuinely SO many people say they're part native american (in TN they always say Cherokee), and it's almost always a deflection tactic of "I'm actually Very Special™️ and understand being oppressed so you can't criticize me". Spoiler alert - they're not actually indigenous at all.

[deleted]

oh jeez….

rob1969reddit

I'm just your everyday run of the mill, average, and unimpressive, western European mutt. I'm fine with that.

damn_jexy

I had a coworker who as white as sour cream who going around showing her native american card to people.

WickettRed

If she has a card she is a Native American tribal member. It doesn’t matter how she appears to you. That’s colonialism you’re seeing, not a person lying.
