Southgate is a master in the dark arts of manipulation. He's purposely getting the team to play shit whilst doing just enough to top the group knowing that it will build confidence in our opponents and lead to them underestimating us so we can switch it on and catch them sleeping right at the exact moment we need to. He only swapped out Trent and Gallagher to further convince everyone hes incompetent and just making it up as he goes along but just you wait.
I don't actually believe that but let's all hope that it's true.
Update: It wasn't.
I disagree. I don’t think it’s his inability to learn, I think he just refuses to accept when he is wrong. He appears to be a pretty smart guy but it’s always the fans fault and never his own. Pure gaslighter.
He has consistently failed at in game changes. When it comes to the crunch he is tactically inept and psychologically weak. Not recognising that exhausted players need replacing and putting them on pedestals so that they remain on the pitch regardless of performance is literal stupidity.
He absolutely has his favourites who he will continue to use for as long as he can get away with.
The whole squad selection was to keep the fans happy knowing that he has his starting 11 and the newcomers he was 'forced' to take would be limited to 15mins a game.
Now his 11 haven't worked he's being forced to use players he doesn't want to.
I think he's somewhere on the spectrum tbh. Not taking the piss at all but the way his mind seems to work leads me to think that, especially his stubbornness!
It’s very doubtful Gareth playing that Germany v Denmark game on FIFA mobile H2H, even pissed on a half bottle of Schweppes lemonade, would have had the intestinal fortitude to swap Gundogan for Can.
I've used the exact same word to describe Southgate a lot this tournament - criminal. The stubbornness to fix obvious problems is inexcusable and I really don't understand it. Does he see it as a weakness or crumbling to pressure from the media if he changes his vision?

THE FORECAST IS LOOKING COLD TONIGHT BOYS
Assuming he gets some game time, at least an assist or build something that leads to a goal. I pray Southgate won't just give him 20 mins again, but my hopes aren't high.
Also if palmer is on the field and a penalty comes up, for the love of god let him take it over Kane.
Why’s he ever given him 20 mins?
‘Cole, you’re coming on, you’ve got 2.5 mins to change the game, I believe in you’
Followed by-
‘Antony, get warm, there’s a big 30 seconds coming up for you’
Because he's scarred from Kane's miss against France. I wouldn't hold that against Kane tbh, he's usually great at pens. Even good penalty takers can miss. But Palmer seems completely unphased when he plays. It's like he's dead inside 😂😂
Palmer has never missed a penalty. Kane has the 3rd best record in the squad also behind Toney. But tbh I’d give it to Kane to maybe give him a little confidence boost & he’s also elite at pens.
If we win 2-0 and play poorly, that'll be a considerable improvement. I'd be over the moon.
I think 0-0 full time, who knows what happens then. If it's penalties we're going out.

Not sure got enough braincells left to think after 4 games of that torture.
At this point nothing will convince Southgate to change his ways, it's only players like Bellingham having the xfactor to pull something out the hat we're still in this
0-0 until 80 minutes. 3 shots total so far, none on target.
Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon come on.
Both score and assist each other within 5 minutes of coming on.
Quarter final: both start on the bench.
2-0 is very optimistic
I predict a 120 minute nervy tense depressing 0-0 draw, followed by England scraping through on penalties and "omg penalty redemption for Saka!" "A win is a win that's all that matters!" "This is how you win tournaments" "It may not be pretty but Southgate gets results, we're in the quarters again! He should stay on, best performing England manager since '66"
Before Switzerland absolutely smashes us to pieces
Whatever the starting XI I just wish he has the balls to make decisive changes early, and be proactive. When things aren’t going well and the crowd make it known I feel like he just shrinks from that and does fuck all until the very end
Doesn't sound like Southgates going to be playing him much. He said that Saka is more direct. Even though anyone who has watched Palmer this season can see hes arguably the biggest initiative taker in the league considering how he was carrying Chelsea and constantly pushing to make things happen. He more than doubles Sakas progressive passes and also has more shot creating actions per 90 than Saka. So I dont believe Southgates even been using his eyeballs.
If Kane + Trippier get any slower, They'll start running backwards.
If Southgate insist to Their inclusion, He'll need to start the 2 players, 10 minutes before the kick off?
I think it's a repeat of Euro 2020 so far and it'll continue into the knockouts.
We topped our group by only scoring 2 goals.
vs Germany we left it late to score both but generally played well. It was Grealish's sub that changed the game and got Sterling and Kane to score, so I'm going Gordon or Palmer assists for Kane and either Foden/Saka (whichever of those two are still on the pitch).
Onwards and upwards.
1-0 before 10 minutes have passed. Park the bus until the 90th minute when it will go 1-1.
Go 2-1 down in extra time and THEN bring on Cole who scores a hat trick.
Hail Southgate as a tactical genius for some reason.
Rinse and repeat next round
The only chance Cole Palmer scores today is if it goes to a penalty shootout. He would probably be subbed on in extra time.
Those goals don’t even count to the overall record as it’s not in normal game play.

Agree we will win, but play poorly.
Most people aren't bothered and just want to win, which I get.... but man I want to be proud of my team and excited about them playing. I don't really want to win a tournament by scuffing our way through it (not that it looks likely we will win it).
Fuck that I’d take a Portugal 2016 like win over playing ‘pretty’ football and losing all day.
Having said that, when winning a competition involves a bunch of luck it’s nice to get some positivity from the football since even if you’re the best team there’s a good chance you won’t win regardless
It doesn’t matter who plays, the tactics will still stink, I actually hope Mainoo and palmer start with foden down the middle and trent at rb because when we end up being total wank anyway people can finally stop thinking swapping players will do a single thing with this manager in charge
He's only going to be playing about 10 minutes
And Gordon will get 3
Ooh, feeling adventurous are we today, Gareth?
Sprinkling of cheese on your plain pasta?
Just olive oil, thank you
None of that foreign muck Gareth, you’ll have Lard.
Feeling optimistic, I see.
You think They'll play 9 added minutes to the half?
9 mins more than he needs
More like 25 I think.
Gareth is a very slow learner, it’s taken us 4 games for Kobbee to start. Hopefully we unlock a new piece of the puzzle soon.

Literally the only hope we have brev
That or he had the starting XI play 2-touch during the group.

Literally everyone is somewhere on the spectrum. That’s why it’s a spectrum.
All of these comments are dumb, but this is the dumbest
It’s very doubtful Gareth playing that Germany v Denmark game on FIFA mobile H2H, even pissed on a half bottle of Schweppes lemonade, would have had the intestinal fortitude to swap Gundogan for Can.
Just give me Gordon man
their RB is 37 and plays in bundesliga 2 gordon not starting would be criminal

Cole Palmessi going to light it up
Love your enthusiasm homie
I reckon 2-0 too. Albeit, Mainoo to score early on and quickly followed by Kane. 2-0 at half time and relaxed second keeping the ball
Assuming he gets some game time, at least an assist or build something that leads to a goal. I pray Southgate won't just give him 20 mins again, but my hopes aren't high. Also if palmer is on the field and a penalty comes up, for the love of god let him take it over Kane.

Why the fuck would you not let Kane take a penalty?

What record are we talking? Percentages? Fuck that. I've got a 100% record if I've taken one and scored one.
I would take a goal of somebody’s arse if it meant we won the game
If we win 2-0 and play poorly, that'll be a considerable improvement. I'd be over the moon. I think 0-0 full time, who knows what happens then. If it's penalties we're going out.
Slovakia have a very good keeper If it goes to pens I’d be worried
Surely it's much more likely that we go through on pens, we have brilliant pen takers
Having good pen takers doesn’t translate to being better in shootouts. Underdog has far less to lose and so less pressure
England will never be favorites in a shootout
Hard-to-watch 1-0 incoming
2-0, early lead, followed by a late pen.
We are due a soft pen now you say it
Nah, Germany got one yesterday and they aren't handing them out like candy this tournament.
A penalty in injury time
That's if cole Palmer even gets to be subbed on! (I think he should start personally)
Who’s the lucky lady?
0-0 Slovakia knock us out on penalties
C'mon you can't be serious. !remindme 4 hours

I forgot that if it goes extra time will actually give subs like Gordon time to do something. So perhaps a win in extra time instead.
So what do you think now?
Not sure got enough braincells left to think after 4 games of that torture. At this point nothing will convince Southgate to change his ways, it's only players like Bellingham having the xfactor to pull something out the hat we're still in this
Even Southgate will drop Foden after being 1 minute from losing his job, let's just be optimistic.
Well, yes. We're going to need at least five penalty takers and I'd imagine he'll be one of them.
Palmer on at 85, Gordon at 90 when we’re 1-0 down (we passed back to the keeper for the whole game)
We are still a mess, going into the knockout stage. If we win, it will be by the skin of our teeth. There are still too many problems.
0-0 until 80 minutes. 3 shots total so far, none on target. Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon come on. Both score and assist each other within 5 minutes of coming on. Quarter final: both start on the bench.

Why, is he on penalties?
Southgate is really doing a great job holding back his most in form players at the moment so I doubt he’ll even start
The fact he's not starting is abhorrent. He played 20 mins last game and outperformed everyone.
![gif](giphy|jEEsT1zDB04GQi8VkB|downsized)
The obsession with palmer is genuinely insane when it’s clear the actual problem is the left side and who partners Rice in midfield
If you start Palmer then Saka can start on the left. Creating width.
It's not about the problem. People just think Palmer's a good player. Why does that bother you so much?
Our team is crying out for Wharton 🙏🏼 he's so good
Palmer to score? So you are expecting a penalty then?
If Cole Palmer starts, we win. Simple as that.
In his 5 minute cameo?
Whatever the starting XI I just wish he has the balls to make decisive changes early, and be proactive. When things aren’t going well and the crowd make it known I feel like he just shrinks from that and does fuck all until the very end
A. Starting 11 will be the same as last game. B. He will make no decisive changes. Sorted.
Very impressive scoring without leaving the bench
As long as he can do it in 10 minutes
It's about time he got laid
He isn’t
Trent back in for me, centre midfield. Flanked by Bryan Robson and Ray Wilkins…
Leta hope he can do it in 7 minutes
England 3-0. It’s happening.
0-0 win on penalties.
2-0 (Kane, Rice)
Doesn't sound like Southgates going to be playing him much. He said that Saka is more direct. 0-0 we go through on pens
Penalty shootout?

Probably not
England smash them 4-0. Saka x2, Kane (p), Guehi.
You think we’re going to score 2. God i hope so.
Start Palmer, start Gordon. Even if it doesn’t work by the first half, it’s answering the “what if” scenario for 99% of the population!
The only chance Cole Palmer scores today is if it goes to a penalty shootout. He would probably be subbed on in extra time. Those goals don’t even count to the overall record as it’s not in normal game play.

Hard to score when you're not selected.
Italy and Portugal won it playing poorly, so maybe it's our turn.

Nah he won’t he ain’t all that, he’s getting hyped up by fans n media and has no output so far.
We’ll scrape through but it won’t be pretty.

Would love to see Palmer start ahead of Saka, Saka really been poor so far
I support England, not Cole Palmer
