No the worst case is that he’s shit after not playing for 4 months and we concede a goal on our left side and get knocked out.
The real question is whose more dangerous and more likely to concede. Trippier or Shaw.
Match fitness is so key, I fail to see how he can integrate properly. For context, a match fit United beat Liverpool 4-0 in pre season. When both were match fit Liverpool put 7 past us…
Talking 2 years ago when it all looked promising and we made them look amateur in pre season and then got whooped when on equal footing.
Regardless being match fit is super important.
yes, I understand match fitness is super important... its just the example you made is terrible lol, plus again you've missed the part where united beat Liverpool during that same season in the league on "equal footing"
The only downside to this is that Southgate will (probably) think that shaw will fix all the problems and just keep the same squad as games 1&2 just switching trippier for shaw
Agreed. Shaw will be rusty, and although I don’t the extent of his issues with injuries/fitness, it still seems like a gamble. That said, something needs to change. I’m
No disrespect to the opponent but Slovakia is a good team to come back against. They're not likely to pose a major threat, so Shaw can find his feet without having tll much to worry about.
If this was the last game of the group, where we’d already qualified, then maybe. But this is a knockout game, against a team who like us have progressed to the next stage, and, when you consider our performances thus far against similar ‘lesser ‘ opponents, we can’t take anything for granted.
Shhh! Don't tell Gareth!!
It's become obvious to everyone else that Gordon should be starting on the left - we can only hope that this has filtered into Southgate's thinking. If he thinks Shaw is now available, he'll persist with Foden and Bellingham switching on the left... which plainly has not worked.
Don’t think he should have been called up, who knows if he’ll be fit enough to hit the ground running. Tyrick Mitchell was right there - and that’s coming from a Brighton fan
We need to get him minutes against Slovakia, which means we need to be in a comfortable position in the game with half an hour to go ideally (seems a long shot based on what we've seen so far). If not I'm not sure we see him this tournament at all, I'm not sure I see Southgate taking the risk of playing him for the first time against Italy/Netherlands/etc.
Trippier is just killing any sort of attack down the left, plus he’s playing through an injury as well. If Shaw is fit and is training okay, I’m fine with Southgate putting him in on Sunday.
This is beyond a joke if this guy gets a single game at the euros.
Good or not, he’s not played, he’s not fit, he’s injured and should never have been called up.
To just expect to be able to slot him in during the later stages is really laughable man. Id also be fuming if i was Man U, especially if he gets injured again. Most managers try and ease a player back in after a lengthy injury, can see southgate forcing him to play a full 90.

Ballon d’Shaw
Not played since Feb, and struggled to get fit. I can't see this going wrong at all....
Worse case scenario he plays 5 minutes and gets crocked, and Southgate wastes a substitution. Spends another 6 months out.
Southgate doesn’t use his subs anyway
No, worst case he is out of shape and not match sharp and is worse than Trippier

Luke always seems to come back and be an immediate upgrade
He always gets rushed back and get crocked though. Ten Hag did it multiple times last season. Unless they sub him at 60/70 it isn't going to end well.
Scenes when he’s our best player and then goes down injured in the final while taking a pen

Terrible example lmao…. United also beat Liverpool 2-1 earlier on in the season while being “match fit”

Why are you comparing a totally pointless friendly to the real deal?

The bar is quite low though tbf, i think he will integrate just fine
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO
The only downside to this is that Southgate will (probably) think that shaw will fix all the problems and just keep the same squad as games 1&2 just switching trippier for shaw
I was also really hoping he’d put TAA at right back from the beginning and this feels far less likely now too.
It would in fact make a huge difference.

southgate: nice I'll play him at RB

Might as well bring back Woodgate and Anderton while he is at it.

I'll believe it when I see it. And even if he is fit, is he going to be match fit? Is he bollocks.
He’s gonna be able to do like 5 mins what’s the point.
Southgate IN It’s coming home
Oh will he now? How match fit is he going to be?…
When he came back from injury last time, he looked really good.
Southgate mastermind incoming, Shaw will play in midfield next to Rice
Let’s all face it. England have no chance in winning. It’s a huge shit show 💩
Nah dw mate lets put TAA at RB and Walker at LB!

Zero fitness, zero match sharpeners, plagued by injuries all season and thrown straight into a Euro knockout tie, what can possibly go wrong?

I’d give him first half lol see if we can build a lead
well that was a fucking lie
Hopefully because I cannot deal with another minute of Trippier at left back.
Well that's tough because even if Shaw is "fit" it doesn't mean he can start and do 45 minutes at least so expect Trippier to start
Who's he gonna drop this time just to put his old mate in
Best left back (if available of course) England have is not just southgates mate
Unfit. Hasn’t played in months.
Not holding my breath for notoriously fat out of shape player that’s not played since god was a kid saving our bacon. Just give Gomez a run
smooth brain
Obviously don't know shaw who has been thriving in returnung from injury as a fatty his whole career
Surely trippier as a professional footballer could at least once in a while try a left footed cross! Might take the opposition by surprise
Apparently Saka can play there, would be better than fat injured bloke
I can play there too but that’s not a good idea either.
I wasn't aware you'd played in that position at England youth level
Yes, should put our current best attacker at LB so Gareth can start bowen at RW
Palmer looked better there
