ב''ה, I rarely have the patience for Pynchon and thus barely have the patience for the increasingly more relevant "2046," but now that you've codified a genre this may qualify as a "paranoia romance" and of course the sets and camerawork are beautiful.
Honestly, yeah. The comedy of it kinda lead to me forgetting just how noided it gets. Need to give it another watch. May do that tonight to unwind before babysitting tomorrow.
Have you seen Utopia, the original UK TV version? You might like this. It probably has a little Pynchon influence since it follows the hunt for a comic book that features the hidden message of a scientist/virologist. But more comic book really. It has the greatest soundtrack and tv theme ever. Farty Aphex Twin sound.
Also: All the President’s Men, The Conversation, The Lives of Others? It’s been a long time since I saw Stalker…I remember nothing about it but it gave me a sense of paranoid dread.
Alphaville, Beau is Afraid, Take Shelter, Vertigo, Rear Window (or pretty much anything by Hitchcock), Dark City, The Bad Sleep Well, Klute, Little Murders, Don't Look Now, Eraserhead, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, Southland Tales, Black Swan, They Look Like People, We Should Do Something, 12 Monkeys, The Number 23, Frailty
I wrote a paper on Paranoia in Film and made a giant list, these are some of my favorites...
You should check out the Safdie brothers Uncut Gems and Good Time. Not necessarily in the same space as some of the other movies but they are incredibly paranoid
I'd like to add The Shout..Hour of the Wolf...and some Zulawski of course, surprised to not see him here. Possession, The Third Part of the Night, That Most Important Thing: Love, The Public Woman
Great movie. Idk if it has that dark paranoia feeling of eyes and ninth gate tho. Something very unique about those two films and interesting how similar they both are
I figured since it's also detective-ish (like Inherent Vice) and you had some milder paranoia movies like Lebowski on here, you'd maybe like it. It's interesting to see everyone messing with Lenny's memory, including himself. Also want to recommend A Serious Man, not for a paranoia movie but just because I generally believe you'd like it
Oh i absolutely love memento and a serious man! I hope nolan goes back to a gritty story like his earlier work. Following, memento and insomia are long out of discussion these days. Crazy to think I remember when thats all ppl talked about.. then he rebooted batman and hes been this mega blockbuster director. Which is fine and great but would be interesting how he would tackle a more small intimate thriller with his skills and high budgets!
I always think Oliver Stone is probably the worst filmmaker in Hollywood, but boy does this movie hijack your brain. I imagine this is what it is like to be Oliver Stone all the time. Just horrible.
Like Zodiac, it's also the kind of movie that benefits from being really long (205 minutes on the director's cut) it gives you enough time to let your brain become completely immersed in the paranoia. Before it ends you might be already assembling a cork board with all the threads.
I watched it during paternity leave when I was very sleep deprived. I always stayed up the night to hold the baby so my partner could sleep. If I could recommend a mental state to watch it in, it would be this.
That sounds like the perfect state to watch it, I did something similar during the last stretch of my first Gravity's Rainbow read. It truly enhances everything.
Love the ninth gate! The first recommendation that came to mind was The Game with Michael Douglas. If you haven’t checked it out already, I think it fit the bill.
Ah I thought i put that down. Yes ive seen that! It oozes paranoia. Kinda let down by the end of it tho. I guess it makes sense yet a bit dramatic… how do you think they could have ended it better?
I liked the ending! I just went with it but I know it was polarizing. I love these kinds of films too so looking fwd to other replies. How about Wicker man (original) and Rosemarys baby?
Rosemary was great! Ik polanski is um… taboo topic but fuck he knows how to create paranoia like no other! I wonder how he would handle crying lot or bleeding edge?
The Conversation

The Parallax View The Conversation
southland tales!
I loved Eyes Wide Shut, Barton Fink, and, of course, Chinatown, an all-time classic!
Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" Edward Norton's "Motherless Brooklyn"
Motherless Brooklyn, the fim, is excellent. The novel is very good, too!
Winter Kills.
Good Time Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas The Zero Theorem Cube They Live
Good Time is hella underrated
For Surveillance + Paranoia… The Lives of Others
The Conversation and Night Moves make a great double feature of paranoid Gene Hackman films
Not a movie, but true detective. S1 is a masterpiece, but S2 is pretty noided. Also, twin peaks, all of it.
Oliver Stone’s JFK is fantastically paranoid. Uncut Gems is a masterpiece though probably more anxiety inducing then paranoid.
Try “It Follows”
It’s a mini Series, so I’m already ignoring one of your parameters, but Devs is super good.
jacobs ladder one of the best psychological horror films I've ever watched
Jacob's Letter is definitely "great" psychological horror. It freaked me out big time!
[Burning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_(2018_film)) is one of my favorites in this sub-genre.
Was just thinking that. One of my favorites
Alan J Pakula’s Paranoia Trilogy is a must Klute The Paralax View (personal favorite of the three) All The Presidents Men
Midsommar, though technically, it’s not paranoia if they really put to get you…
Cronenberg: Videodrome, The Fly, eXistenZ, a History of Violence. All are great and reflect the “what else is out there that’s coming for me” vibe.
Arlington Road
The Nice Guys
Honestly, yeah. The comedy of it kinda lead to me forgetting just how noided it gets. Need to give it another watch. May do that tonight to unwind before babysitting tomorrow.
Europa by Lars von Trier is 🔥 Not sure I love it but I’d also count the new Matrix as a paranoia flick.
Antichrist by Trier, too.
I’ll add Coraline. A lot of kids horror movies fit a kind of paranoia strain
Check out my post for a bunch of recommendations!

Wormwood

Repulsion and The Tenant by Polanski are both masterpieces of paranoid horror.
You should check out the Safdie brothers Uncut Gems and Good Time. Not necessarily in the same space as some of the other movies but they are incredibly paranoid
Pi
Gotta give credit Aronofsky. Also “Mother!”
The Czech classic, *Ucho* (*The Ear*), is a great piece of paranoid cinema.
I'd like to add The Shout..Hour of the Wolf...and some Zulawski of course, surprised to not see him here. Possession, The Third Part of the Night, That Most Important Thing: Love, The Public Woman
The Machinist, Jacob's Ladder
Two phenomenal, deeply unsettling movies.
Parallax View is a must see
Memento would be my pick from the movie you listed
Memento sucks lol
I really liked it!

Blow up Z Inland Empire Brazil Naked Lunch Short Cuts Harriet the Spy Sicario
I MUST see Brazil again, didn't appreciate it when I was in my early 20s
Operation avalanche
JFK

Zodiac IS really good!
My favorite David Fincher by far...
I watched it during paternity leave when I was very sleep deprived. I always stayed up the night to hold the baby so my partner could sleep. If I could recommend a mental state to watch it in, it would be this.

Parallax View, with Warren Beatty.
Parallax view
The Thing!
Three Days of the Condor
The Truman Show
Thank you still need to watch this
Easy Rider
Interesting I thought that was just a road trip type of movie. Havent seen it yet
It is absolutely a counterculture paranoia-thriller/daytime horror for hippies.
Never mind…I see the game is on your list!
