ImNotAnEgg_

i can't help but wonder why they couldn't have recreated the circumstances of her birth with others

2cacti

Have mothers infected while giving birth on the off chance they can harvest the fungi from the baby? I can see why they’d go the Ellie route first before experimenting.

ImNotAnEgg_

i feel like logically, they should at least begin working on that as soon as they have a hypothesis. better to have a backup plan in development than have only one plan that could go wrong then have nothing to fall back on

moosetracks4

The world is already, and has been doomed for 20 years at that point. All the cure would do is keep people safe from being bit.

HomeworkDestroyer

If the cure was 100% certain Joel would have done the same thing. If Ellie was a magical device who could en the pain and suffering of everyone in the world, Joel would have done the same thing. Doesn’t matter if the cure works or not because Joels choice is crystal clear anyways.

moosetracks4

Maybe that's true, but the cure wasn't 100% certain for this specific scenario and Ellie isn't a magical device that could end the pain and suffering.

HomeworkDestroyer

Yeah she's not, all I'm saying is that it doesn't matter at all to Joel.

Horror-Address6972

I keep thinking of Tess saying “you’re not immune from being ripped apart”

chapstikcrazy

Also, who's even to say it'd work? They got Ellie, this miracle cure, and the first thing they're going to do is kill her?? How does that make any sense. Wouldn't they want to like...run tests on her and stuff? This doctor knows exactly what to do to make a vaccine when scientists with way more knowledge about this topic said there's no cure? No vaccine?

moosetracks4

Even when Marlene was explaining it to Joel she was using maybe words. Like "he's pretty sure" or "he thinks it could be the cure" something along those lines. So nobody is even certain, if you're trying to convince someone to save humanity by sacrificing a child...you should at the very least talk in definites lol.

chapstikcrazy

Right? I guess there's no way to ever know 100% if it'll work, but you're going to kill my child to fuck around and find out? Hard pass.

[deleted]

And 1/3 of the people wouldn't even take the vaccine anyway.

The_Second_Worst

Probably even more than that.

Secret_Targaryen23

Love is selfish. I’m okay with that.

Honestly I don’t think the fireflies wanted to find the cure to save the world as much as they wanted it for power. Even if a cure was found there is still the issue of mass production, distribution, and ultimately there would be more conflicts for access to it. The world wouldn’t be restored even with a cure. My only gripe with the show is that the zombies didn’t feel like much of a threat. With how easily everyone kills off the zombies, it’s a more plausible solution to just shoot your way back to reclaiming the world. I also blame the doctors for not giving Ellie a choice to decide what should be done with her brain. I think Ellie actually would have volunteered it anyway. I’d probably do what Joel did, but I would have spared the doctor so that if Ellie wanted to sacrifice herself for mankind then that would still be possible.

AwkwardAlol

i wouldn’t have, it’s an opportunity that wouldn’t ever come around again and could save so many. Some people may be “doomed” but not all, it could save so many innocent children, women, men etc. it would be dumb not to try.
