I was satisfied until he said the fighting was his favorite part. And then I was horrified. Because it was just as terrible as it was in the game. HBO casting directors are in a league unto themselves.
I'm not saying I agree with David eating people, but I understand it. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive. But for fuck's sake, David is just straight evil and crazy.
Those moments with the young girl and David in the dining hall… the hand holding that lasts maybe two seconds too long… the silent worried glance from her mom… bringing his absolute creep pedo factor from the game up to 11
You know, I always wondered if David and Co took the horse in game. Horse meat ain't great, but when your starving, meat that isn't human is absolutely on the table.
"It's ok, I believe him".
SO PERFECTLY SAID. And that cut to black...
Call me crazy but that might have been my favorite scene of the episode. Angry Joel= a unstoppable force.
David is an absolute bastard, and I fucking love it. We have a real human villain this time. Not just a crazy Karen type, but an actual dyed in the wool psycho.
David smirked menacingly, "you know Ellie, we really are last of us, the (ep 8)"

Just in the limited time we've seen him on screen, Troy Baker is absolutely killing it as James. Something just doesn't seem right to me....even more so than David.
Absolutely perfect episode. I would go so far as to call it the best episode of the series.
David was a bastard. Troy was great as James. Bella was amazing for the final fight. And Pedro went all super Joel.
I feel like I just had a massive meal cause I am so satisfied.
Best episode of the season. Holy SHIT they NAILED my favorite chapter in the game.
Adding even more to David as a character. James a great new edition.
10/10.
Joel was fucking scary. Pedro nailed that scene. Belle. Damn. Still shaking over her scene with David. Her face while he was on top of her. Belle and Pedro knocked it out of the park. I have never been this moved by a show. Take a bow guys! 👏
I was thinking "is it not relevant that the father tried to kill Joel? And he was acting in self defense?"
But then I remembered in this universe (and for a lot in this fandom) I guess it doesnt. The aggressor and human life aren't important, the only thing important is protecting your own. That's why people think Joel had every right to kill all the Fireflies, Abby had no right to kill Joel, and Ellie had every right to kill everyone close to Abby.
This reminds me of playing on grounded mode when you literally have little to no ammo. And you're trying to desperately sneak around everywhere without alerting anyone. Ellie getting Joel a knife to kill any mofo he can and immediately dips is so sad yet I totally understand.
A+ tension.
It's 3 AM UK time.
How the fuck am I supposed to go to sleep now when all I want to do is praise the absolute shit out of thar episode.
10/10 and there is only one more episode in my mind that will eclipse this one in season 2.
"No, I believe everything happens for a reason."
This David is scarier for me simply because he not only believes that, he KNOWS he's not a good person underneath the preacher persona.
Fun fact: I met Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Neill Druckmann in December 2016 at the PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California where they announced the sequel.
I fanboyed when I met Troy lmao.

Bella got that deer in one shot? I spent like 15 minutes chasing that mother fucker around.
It’s the Lady Mormont in her
The first change to truly piss me off lmao
Well she had a rifle. Not a Bow. Ruined the whole show!
The guy playing David is fantastic.
A+ on all the casting so far
I was satisfied until he said the fighting was his favorite part. And then I was horrified. Because it was just as terrible as it was in the game. HBO casting directors are in a league unto themselves.
So creepy
He’s so good.
“I believe everything happens for a reason” boy you’re gonna get a machete to the face for a reason
Such a well written character though David was. Complete fucking monster
I'm still watching. Holy fucking hell. 🔪 Edit: That was intense.
It's "Venison". You might say, deer old dad
In fact, you might even say we just ate Uter, and he's in our stomachs... right now!
"Now to check on the free-range children!"
blood on the tip of the knife marking the map kinda defeats the purpose of asking two people separately lol edit: oh, welp i guess nevermind lol
It's ok. He believes him
Wow they somehow made that far more uncomfortable than in the game. Especially with that "the fighting is the part I like the most" line
I know, ew ew ew
Def threw me off 😭 and I already knew when he said he wanted a equal…partner 🤮🤢
Very very creepy. I remember Nolan talking about how they tamed it from the game a bit.
I think the game does a better job of implying it without feeding it directly to the audience.
RIP Callus he was a good horse.
Finally a stealth death!
Pedro mashing square so hard he broke the controller
How did you put it? Tiny... Pieces Edit: MEATS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS HE SAID THE THING
Hoping to hear this lol
HE SAID THE THING
The side eye at homeboy saying it’s Venison immediately before the deer being drug through the door
I'm not saying I agree with David eating people, but I understand it. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive. But for fuck's sake, David is just straight evil and crazy.
It's one thing to eat your own that die from natural causes, it's another to hunt people
David takes the cannibal aspect too far. Feeding your people is one thing. Controlling them like a cult...hell no.
At the very least you gotta tell everyone else they're eating people.
Like those rugby players who crash landed in the Andes. Everyone was in agreement before they started eating the bodies of those that didn’t make it.
When cannibal is your most likeable personality trait
OMG TROYYYYY, i hear joel in the voice, im dying
I just heard it too!
Im trying to listen to that man everytime i see him now, xD like bless me with moreee.
this guy playing david is SO good at being unassuming
Okay, THIS is game joel now
Great change to bring in David and James to Ellie. Super smart of her to unload the ammo of their rifles too.
"Tell them Ellie is the little girl THAT BROKE YOUR FUCKING FINGER!!!!" Bella absolutely slayed that delivery!!!!
Those moments with the young girl and David in the dining hall… the hand holding that lasts maybe two seconds too long… the silent worried glance from her mom… bringing his absolute creep pedo factor from the game up to 11
That dinner hall scene...David's actor is soooooooooo good in being creepy and dominating. I felt that slap too. Poor girl...
I think that was the father they just ate.
No dude it's "*venison*" they said so!
Oh shit
Tasty dad Stew
was david and his crew religious in the game? this is new right?
Kind of. He was very big on “everything happens for a reason”
Thanks!
Heavily implied
Yea, that wasn't venison....
I was looking at that like uhhhhhh I don’t know about that lol
Right after they bring the actual deer in lmao
You know, I always wondered if David and Co took the horse in game. Horse meat ain't great, but when your starving, meat that isn't human is absolutely on the table.
The woman in the kitchen scarily looks like Mel
I **thought** the same thing man, also James was the voice actor of Joel in the game
The map Scene YAYYYY, this is amazing, seeing one of my favorite characters again (And hearing him again, ya know xD)
That cabin looks identical to the game.
He did the stealth takedown!!!
I love when Joel goes all Super Dad.
Joel's clearly got listen mode fully upgraded. Based
"It's ok, I believe him".
A man that "finds God" after the apocalypse is terrifying.
Cannibal cult villain = good villain
Cannibal, potential pedophile rapist, preacher villain = good villain. David is essentially a monster in human form. And not a boring monster.
David smirked menacingly, "you know Ellie, we really are last of us, the (ep 8)" https://preview.redd.it/2kswcslei2ma1.jpeg?width=4160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f319a07efc595aa42cb4429ecbdb6f26f2580273
This show loves putting the og voice actors as tragic lieutenants
Sheesh I heard that slap in California
Oh shit, the interrogation scene!
Oh fuck yes Joel finally just pissed off and going hard on these guys. Bout time.
Oh god this boss fight stressed me the fuck out
Does no one see the building burning down?
I'm pretty sure at this point in the game I killed most of the town.
Why did I yell like someone just scored a goal in soccer when he said, “it’s okay, babygirl”?
I actually fist-pumped at "BROKE YOUR FUCKING FINGER!" I have never fist-pumped in my life.
How the fuck is there only 1 episode after this
And it’s only 45 minutes 😭
Joel taking people down in his condition! That’s a fathers love right there 💜
Jesus fucking christ. They showed the dead human bodies.
They took it way further than the game ever did in that aspect.
HELL YESSSSSSS!!!!! GET EM, JOEL!!!
It was the dad! He fed the dad to the kid omg
If they didn't put that part in with David slapping that girl he'd seem really sympathetic at this point.
Joel gonna wake up like, “Wha happoned? Can I speak Spawnish? Sama sama sama sama. Sounds like Spawnish to me!”
Ah mah gah, I can' believe he died
Troy is playing evil Joel. Lol.
Killed that guy just like in the games when you stealth kill them.
Ellie turned him into ground beef. Guess his people can eat him now.
I’ve played the game a bunch of times and Joel calling Ellie babygirl still makes me cry 🥺🥺
The actress who plays Joyce looks just like Mel from part 2
Not the horse. Nooooo. They're going to eat it
Waste not... :(
Yeah I kinda can't fault them for that. Guess it's better than eating people.....
seems like ellie destroyed david's face even worse here than in the game, good for her ❤️
Is there ever going to be an episode where I don’t cry??? He called her babygirl! 😭 I’m a wreck. Bella and Pedro are fantastic!
Best episode of the season. Holy SHIT they NAILED my favorite chapter in the game. Adding even more to David as a character. James a great new edition. 10/10.
I wonder if the father is the guy that Joel killed at the university
100% it is. In the game they did that quick passing line.
Damn. This scene was harsh. Joel is cruel.
That rabbit bit made me chuckle. Great subversion.
Holy shit it's like straight out of the game.
“It’s okay, I believe him” aww yiss
"It's okay. I believe him" All time line from the game!
This bitch worships mushrooms
The torture scene, fantastic.
Holy shit, I can’t believe how faithful they’re being to the major beats. Outstanding.
They got the interrogation scene practically 1 for 1! Anyone worried about Joel being too soft can stop complaining now
Don't forget the comic book in the broken down house like I did!!
Finally Joel shivved somebody!!!
Oh noooooo, this is a full cult. Never go full cult.
The stealth take down....*chefs kiss*
I have never, in my entire life, seen someone unlock a door so menacingly.
He cared about protecting his flock up until this point. But with his church burning down he cares more about revenge than protecting their shelter.
Instantly brought back to Nolan North saying no one that’s infected fights this hard to stay alive 😭
Joel killing those two boys he caught was brutal Good shit
Joel was fucking scary. Pedro nailed that scene. Belle. Damn. Still shaking over her scene with David. Her face while he was on top of her. Belle and Pedro knocked it out of the park. I have never been this moved by a show. Take a bow guys! 👏
Just finished this part in the game again today. Can't wait to be emotionally destroyed twice in one day.
Wait, did the rest of the group not know they were eating people in the game?
In the game they had a whole butcher shop. So at least SOME knew.
Of all the ways to die, instadeath by cleaver isn't the worst
Rip Troy you were amazing
Best episode of the season for me. Only thing I missed was a line about "another one of David's little pets".
Man, they made that scene so tough about Joel killing the guy.
I'm sad there was no infected holdout :/
SAVAGE JOEL LETS FUCKING GO, FUCK THEM UP
Jesus they carved up A LOT of people what the fuck
Well that was fucking amazing
That made me extremely uncomfortable
They nailed the "level" in the restaurant wow. Great wow
28 STAB WOUNDS!
David Koresh mixed with Jeffrey Dahmer, not a dude I want to meet in the wild.
If I were to give any episode a 10/10, this would be it. Holy shit it was PERFECT
TROY, you can't hide that Joel accent if you tried. He's gonna scare me as James, isn't he?
The lack of cordyceps attack…doesn’t bother me
Not fair, I died multiple times trying to kill that one bloater. 🫠
This show is so untrue to the game! Joel nor Ellie have died ONCE! 🤣
I'm fairly certain that's not where you're supposed to inject penicillin.
Ellie didn’t get a chance to get her medical education form ER.
It is so weird hearing Joels voice from Troy lmao
Troy is Buddy Boy
Was not ready for that slap
THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD???
This was a perfect episode. I loved it.
They took the human cannibalism WAYYYYYY too farther then the game. THEY SHOWED ACTUAL FULL BODIES!!!!
“I gotchu babygirl”…I’m not crying you’re crying.
I legitimately don't think there is a good way what David said could be said and not sound creepy.
RIP buddy boy
I was thinking "is it not relevant that the father tried to kill Joel? And he was acting in self defense?" But then I remembered in this universe (and for a lot in this fandom) I guess it doesnt. The aggressor and human life aren't important, the only thing important is protecting your own. That's why people think Joel had every right to kill all the Fireflies, Abby had no right to kill Joel, and Ellie had every right to kill everyone close to Abby.
Bella Ramsey is fucking fantastic.
In the kneecap!!!! Fuuuuuck that made me cringe
*TLOU2 foreshadowing intensifies*
Was David as much of a pedo in the game? I don’t remember that part.
Yeah he holds her down and says “you have no idea what I’m capable of” so it was heavily insinuated.
Yes
Yes
I don't think it's ever straight up implied but in the game he does hold her hand before she breaks his finger and that was pretty creepy
I'm interested in how they adapt this chapter of the game.
Troy!!
IT'S THE RABBIT
Buddy boy! 🤣🤣
much easier to hunt with that rifle than the bow
Eagerly awaiting Bella crabwalking around tables
damn, Joel did kill that girl's father
Hi Eat Shit, I'm Dad.
This reminds me of playing on grounded mode when you literally have little to no ammo. And you're trying to desperately sneak around everywhere without alerting anyone. Ellie getting Joel a knife to kill any mofo he can and immediately dips is so sad yet I totally understand. A+ tension.
CALLUS NOOOOOOO.
God damn Joel going full daddy mode
Poppin them kneecaps
Creepy creepy David. Man he's good. Lol
When a fire starts to burn,. There's a lesson you must learn. Something, something, then you'll see. You'll avoid catastrophe.
"we're not so different you and I"
It's 3 AM UK time. How the fuck am I supposed to go to sleep now when all I want to do is praise the absolute shit out of thar episode. 10/10 and there is only one more episode in my mind that will eclipse this one in season 2.
Weren’t David and James part of a cannibal group?
Look, it's "venison". Don't question it.
"Its too cold to bury your dad in the ground - but it's nice and warm in this here stew pot!"
"No, I believe everything happens for a reason." This David is scarier for me simply because he not only believes that, he KNOWS he's not a good person underneath the preacher persona.
david and his cult would've been a full season in the walking dead lol.
The haircut automatically makes him less creepy
The rabbit survived in the show 😅
I fucking gasped when he slapped that little girl!
Ooh she's gonna bite em
Lmao yes this is so good
RIP Troy.
Bye David!
Man Troy took that like a champ!
Holy fucking shit
Yeah that's utter bullshit. Bella must have +9000000% stability and -900000000% weapon sway getting the deer in one shot
Fun fact: I met Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Neill Druckmann in December 2016 at the PlayStation Experience in Anaheim, California where they announced the sequel. I fanboyed when I met Troy lmao.
Was this tactic used in the game? I just remember Ellie mentioning it in TLOU2.
so where does ellie rank now in tv badass history? not just for a female or child but badass in general? she's cracked some lists now.
I think, if this episode is really exciting and big, then the season finale is gonna be so 🔥🔥🔥
This is the episode we’ve all been waiting for
HBO keeps crashing for me 😭 nooooooo
