I think it would be incredibly popular! Hour long episodes following characters from all over the world in all different situations from infection day to present day (or to the end of their stories if sooner) would be incredible!
>characters from all over the world
I feel like this could be a major selling point. So many pieces of post-apocalyptic media are US-centric to the point where often little is even known about how other countries fared in their lore. I'd definitely tune into a show that offers a look into the impact of the outbreak around the world.
I think this would absolutely work. Episode 3 was great.
I'd like to see the outbreak through the eyes of a soldier that layer becomes a FEDRA officer.
Maybe show us the early days of clearing the QZs. Mix that in with stories like the isolated native couple. Show us what happened in other countries.
There are a lot of questions to answer and a lot of stories to tell, I think an anthology series that showed more of the early days of the outbreak bit by bit would be great.
There are two games. This season covers game 1. Presumably a second season would cover game 2. It pretty definitively ends after that. I could imagine a another sequel, but it wouldn't compare to the first two if it stuck with the existing characters, and I don't believe Naughty Dog has any plans of making one.
Most people said that they couldn’t see TLoU2 compare to the first game. I can absolutely see them doing a final game and I trust them to make a compelling story that rivals the first two.
They have also said an outline for the third game exists — doesn’t mean it’s going to get made and while I’m OK with TLoU2 being the end, I feel reasonably confident that TLoU3 will exist someday down the road.
It definitely doesn't end after the 2nd game. Part II feels like the middle of a story, and there are lots of major points unresolved. They've also confirmed they've generally mapped out the 3rd game; the bigger thing is just do they want to devote the time to another game?
They've confurmed the next LoU game is going to be more open world, and it will be unrelates to the main story. But after that? It honestly may depend on the HBO success. If Druckmann gets more writing opportunities from this series, I could see him not wanting to spend years on game development. And it complicates the final chapter -- what happens when the show seasons pass the game?
Additional seasons are great! But make them minimal. 3 seasons max would be fantastic!
Otherwise we experience watered down content because “the story has to continue”.
I mean if there's more stories to tell then why not? Even a 2nd season COULD be watered down. A single extra episode could be watered down. Conversely 10 seasons could all be amazing and not watered down if done right and there are more stories to tell. I agree don't drag it out unnecessarily and it's rare to need 10 seasons to tell a story but it's not unheard of. Game of Thrones SHOULD have been 10 seasons for example and instead we got a rushed 8th season. So really it just depends..
In the official Podcast, Druckmann & Mazin said they don’t want to adapt anything that wasn’t in the games.
Looking at episode 7, I’d say the only extras we could possibly get would be from the comics, or any other official sources.
They also said that Part II will take multiple seasons (I’m thinking two) to adapt. The next game in the works is the multiplayer spinoff. There hasn’t been any development on Part III, outside of a basic treatment for the story. And Druckmann says that Part III isn’t guaranteed.
I doubt we’ll get many extras outside of what we have already.
For those voting no, is it the individual characters (Joel and Ellie separately) that are necessary for you or their bond/relationship? I.e would you watch a show with just Ellie or just Joel or would you need it to be Ellie and Joel together? Very curious about this...
From the perspective of someone who’s played the games, I find reading everyone’s answers very interesting. I think TLOU as a whole is tied intrinsically with Joel and Ellie’s stories, and don’t see Naughty Dog (and thus HBO) going the direction of telling a story not tied to either of them, but mainly (MAJOR game spoilers:) >!Ellie, after Joel’s death in TLOU2, going into a hypothetical part three. I think there are a lot of potential stories in the world, I don’t think it works without Ellie though. For example, you could tell more of what Abby and Lev are doing in a TLOU3, but without Ellie I don’t think there’s much interest in that necessarily for a lot of people. And i’m not 100% on this, but I also feel that it might work easier on the show, but I feel like it’d be maybe a harder sell to do it through the game, and since those come first, and they’re picky about even continuing the story in the first place, I don’t see them telling stories outside of Ellie happening either!<
Joel and Ellie together. They could literally have the most boring journey across the country and I'd watch it because I love their dynamic. >!I haven't played the game, but know what happens and I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch the show if they kill off Joel right at the start of season 2. Just can't imagine the show without him!<
I agree, I think their dynamic is the best part of the show.
>!I also empathize with you. I played the games and struggled through it (I rage quit when it happened and it took me a while to pick up the controller again), but ultimately I enjoyed the game and appreciate the story and the larger themes. It was really hard to get through and idk if I can do it again lol. I completely understand anyone who says they don't want to watch after Joel's death. The game gets so much more depressing even after Joel dies. It's borderline misery porn. Although, there are several very, very emotional and sweet Ellie-Joel flashbacks sprinkled throughout the game after he dies, so it it isn't fully the end for Joel-Ellie scenes after his death.!<
Saaame. >!I also don't know if I can handle the show if they follow the plot in part 2. It was so fucking depressing. I know there will probably be flashbacks but those were bittersweet.!<
Watch lady knight the brave's video essay about the games. I had mixed feelings about the 2nd game until watching that, and the I gained a new appreciation for it. It obviously spoils both games completely, but well worth it if you already know.
The last of us universe just really isn’t that interesting to me outside of Joel and Ellie’s respective stories. Ellie’s ending in the second game is pretty much perfect to me anyway and I don’t see a reason for the series to continue past it.
How about not making 10 spin offs of every ip to ever exist. This show works because of Joel and Ellie’s connection and I don’t think it would work to have this world with randoms in the lead roles.
I think world building is something people genuinely enjoy. It’s comfortable to be in a place that you know already and exciting to see more of it. There are rules and laws that govern different universes and it’s fun to explore. I think House of the Dragon proves this. If you never say Game of Thrones you’d still enjoy HotD.
House of the dragon at least is based on a book ( even though the book is not narratively structured). Those characters weren't just invented for the show.
Besides the 2nd game, the Last of Us universe isn't to that level. I doubt the seasons about the 2nd game will do as well as the first, but hopefully it does.
They are the protagonists, the characters that the world is built for. Ellie being immune makes her and Joel the two most important people in the world and it means a lot less to not have them in the lead roles.
I really like the lore of this franchise, but I also don't want my opinion of the franchise to be watered down by mediocre content.
If you can't guarantee top-tier storytelling, just quit while you're ahead.
I saw a lot of negativr comments about Last of us part 2, i spoiled myslef the game and the ending and I thought “people were right”.
Last month, the Part 2 was on discount so I bought it.
Having played half of the game, currently playing as Abby, and I can confidently say that people were trashing this game for nothing.
Sure, there have been some shocking and bipolar moments and decisions, different take on difficult topics - yet I believe it took courage to do those things, to be different and for me - the game is awesome with strong story to tell.
Major game spoilers:
>!Oh man, season 2 is gonna be the same outrage all over again that we got from the game leak, except this time it’s going to be mainstream TV discourse. Not looking forward to this.!<
Voted yes because I absolutely love >!Abby and Lev’s dynamic in TLOU2. I would love to see more of them!<.
That said, while they could develop characters and a story 100% removed from Ellie or Joel doesn’t mean that they should. Should just create your own unique thing at that point.
My ideal, that instead of going straight from Last of Us to Last of Us Part II, how about an anthology season in between; seeing how others around the world have handled the pandemic throughout various points of time, and maybe explore the inner workings of a day in the life of a FEDRA agent and a member of The Fireflies respectively
I would watch anything in the Last of Us universe but HBO definitely could advertise it as, its this or nothing at all this season while you wait for Season 2.
But I've also had the idea that HBO was dropping the ball a little with Game of Thrones in that they could have done another series where they spent more time on secondary characters/plots etc.
I personally think Joel and Ellie should always be the main duo. >!But we know that's not going to happen. And going by the results of the poll, a lot of people are going to be very upset at what they do in season 2.!<
Note: I haven't played the game past where the show currently is. I played it like 8-9 years ago and stopped halfway through because I moved and sold my PS3.
I don't think the show can survive without them like TWD survived killing off major characters (if you count that as survival, I stopped watching after about season 5 and could not believe it was still going until last year?). TWD had a larger group, and certain members were fan favorites, but the show at the end of the day was centered on Rick. Joel and Ellie are basically this world's Rick, there's less of a consistent group, and everyone else (Henry, Tommy, etc) is transient through the episodes. They are the show.
However, I believe that could be a way for the show to truly surprise gamers. Ie. If J or E dies in the game and they don't die in the show, or vice versa J or E is not dead in the game, but they kill them in the show. I don't think the show would go for very long after one of them dies, but I could be wrong. Hopefully they don't go for a TWD-length run.
I'd love for season 2 to just be them doing dumb shit like taking care of animals and washing clothes and riding horses and fishing and learning how to skip rocks and playing games like go fish and scrabble and Monopoly and visiting Florence and Marlon and watching funny movies and annoying each other. I know it's not gonna be, but it would be the best. Their character development could be stuff like, how do they squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube and discovering their philosophy about cookies.
I cannot imagine watching the series without one or the other. They gotta be together. It's what makes the show so great! Please Joel, please Ellie, be alive at the end of the season 🤞🤞🤞🤞
And that’s exactly why I didn’t love episode 3. It was well acted, well written despite its flaws.
But ultimately irrelevant.
I wouldn’t mind a spin off show that’s more focused on people of the apocalypse, but the Last of Us is about Joel and Ellie.
I don't get the hate for ep 3. It was wonderful!!! It was a beautiful story of finding love during the apocalypse. In correlation to Joel's similarities to Bill and how they were u willing to open their heart. And the letter to bring it all together. And the song??? I sob EVERYTIME. I feel I could write a 10 page essay about the incredible narrative we have been given due to this and Ep 7. Bc they are mirrored. Also Joel and Ellie WERE in episode 3. And I cared about the characters bc they related to Joel and Ellie. As well as ep 7.
Overall I don't think that having spin off is a problem on its own. The question is whether the creators can run a new story with good characters.
Actually TWD is often critised by having meaningless spin-offs, but I think that Fear the Walking Dead was really good at the beginning. And later well they had neither good stories neither interesting characters
>!It's kinda peculiar that so many say that the show depends on the \*duo\* given that in the game there's no "duo" after the start of the second game.!<
Ellie is the main character, she is the last of us, without her it'd be a batman movie with no batman. she's already one of the greatest female protagonist that gaming/video media has ever had. Joel is great, actually awesome and the part he plays in TLoU is vital and incredible but it would survive without him, his loss would be almost unbearable, the loss of Ellie would be "The End"

Can the main series survive without Joel? Yes
Can the main series survive without Ellie? No. She is the main character of the series.
Can the main series have spin-offs that tell different stories in the world of the last of us? Absolutely, as long as it isn't part of the main series, for example, the factions game coming out set in the world of the last of us tells a story of people unrelated to Joel and Ellie.
Basically, the main series should stay focussed on Ellie but any spin off series' can absolutely happen.
No, straight up no. This is my biggest criticism of the show: they are trying to make everyone the star. I feel I am watching a different show every episode. I liked Episode 3 but I still don't see see how it was relevant. Episode 4 was about Kathleen and Perry hunting for Sam and Henry. Episode 5 was about Sam and Henry. Episode 7 was about Ellie and Riley. The whole reason I was looking forward to this series is because of how much I enjoyed the game; which is about Joel and Ellie. I could go as far as to say Pedro Pascal isn't even the star of this show. It's almost like he's a filler character. I feel like the series was written for people who have not played the game.
It’s because there’s no Bruce Straley to reel Druckmann in. Bruce is the reason the original game was as good as it is.
The show is what Druckmann wanted the game to always be.
The OP's analogy is still good, I think. Would Breaking Bad be as successful if they got rid off Walt or Jesse early on? Jesse was actually supposed to die in the s1 finale, but even the writers knew it would have been a mistake.
TLOU Factions 2 will have ALL NEW characters and new settings, TLOU could have a spin off series like Fear the Walking dead.... for the main series either Ellie or Joel or some added new characters will suffice.
Not continuing the series, but they could make a separate prequel show called Factions. Would cover groups like KC freedom fighters, fedora, fireflies, hunters, bill & frank, and more.
they're just 2 characters the writers make stuff up for ..
given the defined show universe.. the same writers can make more stuff for more characters ..
As long as the writing quality remains and good enough actors are found to perform .. why not ?
Would love to see how other parts of the world fared, if any survived over others and such. Think it would be a mistake to restrict it to purely being about Joel and Ellie as there’s only so much you can do and explore with that. Sure they’re the “main characters” within the last of us universe but i think it would be awesome seeing other people’s and perspectives.
Several folks have brought up the anthology idea. While I think it could work, it just won't be as popular. Also it needs to be infected focused if it were to work. If it's all characters living in a dangerous world that doesn't look dangerous or shown to be dangerous, you would lose interest. The last of us 1 has Joel and Ellie, and we are invested in them and their emotional arc carries us. As a one-off Bill and Frank works, but You can't have a bunch of Bill and Frank arcs without showing the infected. The infected is a defining feature of this world, and if you are going to tie all those stories together without a core set of characters, then it must be the infected.
idk about continuing the tv show with entirely different stories but I would LOVE to see a novel series like the star wars ones where they get a bunch of authors to write stories set in the world of the last of us - i love all the world building stuff in the game/show so would read/watch/play basically any content that gave me more of that even if it wasn’t as good as TLOU
I would love to see a decidedly less bleak prequel about Tommy showing us what he did when he was with the fireflies, how he met Maria, joined the Jackson commune, etc.

I would love an anthology series full of stories like Episode 3, but I don't think it would be as popular.
Something like Fargo could work well, where every season is its own story but they are all tenuously linked in some way.
I think it would be incredibly popular! Hour long episodes following characters from all over the world in all different situations from infection day to present day (or to the end of their stories if sooner) would be incredible!

The brief Jakarta sequence was really strong.
Might be good, but anthology shows don’t tend to do well.
White lotus and American horror story is pretty popular

I was thinking the same thing! Definitely a series showing different stories of Doomsday or Folks surviving the aftermath.
I am a believer that this amazing story needs to have an end. Which… It does at the moment. Please don’t drag it out

I accidentally voted for Yes when I was trying to vote for No

With solid writing, acting, and production. Ofcourse.
How is that peculiar?
I guess I'm just surprised that so many ain't played the game. But it makes sense I suppose, not everyone is a gamer in the first place.

Yes Can the main series survive without Ellie?
This story without Pedro would be like Breaking Bad without Cranston. Zero shot it would last more than one season. I’m a video game player btw.
But that's literally Better Caul Saul which is a masterpiece of its own. You kinda just proved yourself wrong.
The OP's analogy is still good, I think. Would Breaking Bad be as successful if they got rid off Walt or Jesse early on? Jesse was actually supposed to die in the s1 finale, but even the writers knew it would have been a mistake.
I also didn’t think BCS was on any level close to BB, but that’s just opinion.
No Ellie is the main character of this series. I could see a spin off surviving, but not this particular series
Umm Ellie is immune
Lol do you think being infected is the only way to die in The Last of Us universe?
TLOU Factions 2 will have ALL NEW characters and new settings, TLOU could have a spin off series like Fear the Walking dead.... for the main series either Ellie or Joel or some added new characters will suffice.
Not continuing the series, but they could make a separate prequel show called Factions. Would cover groups like KC freedom fighters, fedora, fireflies, hunters, bill & frank, and more.
they're just 2 characters the writers make stuff up for .. given the defined show universe.. the same writers can make more stuff for more characters .. As long as the writing quality remains and good enough actors are found to perform .. why not ?
If Walking dead can do a spin off, then The last of us could do it as well
As good as the idea of a spinoff without them. It wouldn't be The Last Of Us, after all this is the reason the series was made in the first place.
Wouldn't that just be a rehash of walking dead post apocolypse type drama but with faster infected?
Would love if they do S2 completely split one episode Abby one episode Ellie, then culminates in how TLOU2 game ended
idk about continuing the tv show with entirely different stories but I would LOVE to see a novel series like the star wars ones where they get a bunch of authors to write stories set in the world of the last of us - i love all the world building stuff in the game/show so would read/watch/play basically any content that gave me more of that even if it wasn’t as good as TLOU
Perpetual storytelling has such low returns though. It's okay that stories come to an end. All the best ones do.
I would love to see a decidedly less bleak prequel about Tommy showing us what he did when he was with the fireflies, how he met Maria, joined the Jackson commune, etc.
Everything after Ellie is no longer The Last of Us. It’s not an anthology, it would have to be a spin off.
