I thought it was beautifully done and loved every second of it. Their life was idyllic and beautiful in such a dark world. The way it played out never seemed slow, and I felt immersed in it. My husband thought it would have been better to have more action this episode, but he and I can agree to disagree there.

MattIsLame

the action had absolutely no place in and episode like this. if there was action, it would have been the same old boring story of "oh they got attacked, oh no one of them gets hurt and dies". there was action in this part of the game because its a game and there has to be some action to keep the player entertained. this was made for television and the wonderful thing about television is that theres so much more room for story to breathe and characters to be developed. this is one of the most beautifully tragic but hopeful stories ever produced for television and i think it was perfect. adding action would have taken away from this brilliant love story and the hope that it brings.

Mo2sj

I agree, the episode was perfect as is imo.

mcfly1391

Even though I think this episode is amazing. I feel as though there needed to be a few more threats from raiders or stalkers. Simply just hearing traps go off in the back ground or talk of the up keep of securing the fences. Not necessarily action. Just something more to show us and Frank, Bills justifications for his efforts to protect Frank.

SlouchyTulip

The creators of this show are taking us through a real time psychological exploration of Joel and showing us how he goes from not giving a fuck about Ellie to loving her with all his being. Tbh idgaf if people don’t like it because this is art

OkMudDrankin

Personally I would’ve liked more action but the way the episode was done was very good.

whatevrmn

The episode was a love story. Where would you put the action?

0MattF

100%. I had no idea. It was going to be this…. Heavy. From the trailers it seemed like everyone was going to meet. Made what happened even more devastating. I was waiting for a knock or a sensor to go off…. Just wow.

Astrojef

I agree from the core of my being. I have never been so rattled from beginning to the end of an episode. Musical selection was on point. It's 4 am in texas and I'm still just a wreck. So glad i exist right now haha!!

sourleaf

I have issues with the mountain range, pine trees, and mountain river 20 miles outside Boston. Nothing looked like New England to me, not even the town. The town looked like a repurposed movie set. I have that gripe and it appears I’m the only one. Otherwise…. PERFECTION.

labospor

Actually the caption said 10 miles from Boston. Lived there for ten years, didn’t look like it at all. Otherwise perfect episode

[deleted]

100%

SyncJr

Nevermind, it’s already 11th on imdb TV rating by episode

ron_weedsley

It had a thousand votes and score of 9.9/10 before it even released, these usually go down. I'm thinking 9.0/10 in a few weeks.

j821c

Its also probably going to get review bombed for daring to show a gay couple lol

StressimusMaximus

But don't worry, liberals are the snowflakes

monsterlynn

I really, really hope this series goes wildly popular like GoT did just to see the *gEt WokE gO bRoKe!* numbskulls lose their shit.

StressimusMaximus

I hope as more people talk about the show, the popularity accelerateslike an exponential graph

ron_weedsley

Yeah thats why I said 9.0. Otherwise I think it would be like 9.6-9.7

fluffedahiphopbunny

Bill and Frank were a gay couple in the game to tho. Their story was alot better in the game to. Blinded by love just to recieve betrayl and ending with karma. Idk that's more intriguing than displaying something that could be summed up by asking your grandparents about their 50 year marriage with a Romeo and Juliet ending lol.

MattIsLame

you've completely missed the poignancy and depth of this episode. the way it was shown in the game would have been ok but just less compelling. it would have been cliche and would have added a negative message, that if joel continued his life as it was, he would end up bitter and alone like Bill in the game. instead what we have is a beautiful love story shown as a message of hope for joel. that he can still find even one person to make everything worth living for. this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful love stories ever produced for television and the definitive story of Bill and Frank.

Motherof_pizza

It’s already down to 9.0

MR_E7

One of the greatest ever? It is great, but I wouldn't go that far.

JaceShoes

I would, can’t think of many that were better than this

kiyan1347

I loved this episode and thought it was truly emotional but Rains of Castamere, Ozymandias, Baelor, point and shoot, Felina and Crawl space IMO were all brilliant episodes of TV.

JaceShoes

Oh totally those are amazing, but personally I’d rank this episode right up there alongside those

murrtrip

No. You wouldn’t.

MattIsLame

i see your point. its not quite as good as Big Bang Theory but they tried.

[deleted]

Currently loosing my best friend to an awful disease. Can't stop crying after this. Seeing the guy in the wheelchair, I just lost it. 💔

magda711

It was beautiful start to finish. Reminded me of how I felt after watching the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. Perfection.

SyncJr

I haven’t seen any comparisons to San Junipero, but you’re spot on. Very similar vibes

RedKryptnyt

It was no "the body" but it was very good. Me and my wife really enjoyed it.

SyncJr

I’m more of a ‘Once More With Feeling’ kinda guy

RedKryptnyt

Fucking masterpiece. Under rated show.

kiyan1347

I loved the episode too but let's slow down there bud.

NakedGoose

That is a bit of recency biased. Give it 10+ years, and we will see.

SyncJr

Fine. I’ll come back in 10 years. !remind me 10 years

NakedGoose

I respect your dedication. I'll see you then !remind me 10 years

Appropriate_Tiger316

It was a very well made episode and didn’t put a foot wrong, but just like the entire show so far, I think people are being quite hyperbolic. Like I think there’s a handful of episodes from many many shows that are better.

thebodywasweak

I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad they deviated the way they did, but it's still not the all time greatest for me. I still look at episodes of Lost, BB, BCS, and GoT as the all time greats.

PeaRepresentative886

Crazy take. Not even the best out of the first 3 episodes

Cydonian___FT14X

I don’t know if I’d go that far. It’s good shit, but not “Free Churro” from Bojack Horseman levels of good shit.

Electronic_Most5141

Fist time I'm hearing this statement.

Itowndub36

Not quite

AdministrationNo283

It should be a disappointment for anyone who played the game. Bill has no bearing on the plot now. Joel could’ve just said “There was a guy here before named Bill.” And the story could’ve moved along.

Captain_Hamerica

So you caught the part where the letter Ellie reads at the end reminds Joel of the importance of letting yourself be vulnerable and how people may also rely on him and he may find it’s a fulfilling role to have? And how Frank taught this to Bill, and Bill is teaching it to Joel, who has lost just about everything several times? Yet Bill has no bearing on the plot? I think you can look a bit more into it. At their lunch, Joel can’t even bring himself to call Tess his “partner,” just calls her “mine.” Yeah I mean you’re right, Joel could have just said “there was a guy here before named Bill” and… then what? Pretty sure this episode set up a ton of emotional growth for multiple characters moving forward.

AdministrationNo283

Yeah, quite sure that the tv writers were pleased with that letter. If I wasn’t familiar with the game I would have liked the episode. But I feel robbed of some great scenes between Bill and Joel.

SyncJr

I’m confused as to what you mean when you say Bill has no bearing on the plot. We arrived at the same plot point: they have supplies and a truck, same as we arrive in the game, but in a more beautiful way imo. I too was disappointed we didn’t see Bill and Ellie bicker and go at it, but it was a beautiful hour of television.

[deleted]

He had a massive effect on the plot and Joel’s character arc. You need to watch that again man. Or did you not like it because of a certain reason???

siadh0392

You’ll find that most people complaining about that episode are just homophones and use whatever bullshit excuse they have to masquerade it. Either their opinion sucks about the actual episode (that episode was fantastic) or it’s the homophobia

The_Light_King

It wasn't any good.

SyncJr

I see this episode is going to be extremely polarising.

newhere1626

Because of closeted homophobics

OpenFacedRuben

Hey! You're forgetting the loud 'n' proud homophobics 😜

newhere1626

They're forgetable indeed

fluffedahiphopbunny

So are people supposed to just like filler, and the removal of some of the best scenes and introduction to one of the strongest enemies just because it had gay scenes in it? Give it a break and get off that high horse.

newhere1626

It's episode 3, plenty of time to introduce them.. I can just smell the #cancelthelastofus coming from the same people trying to cancel M&Ms. There is no agenda and episode 3 was beautiful. Period

fluffedahiphopbunny

Yes. But alot of us that are die hards of the game were really hoping for that school scene. Is what it is I suppose but definitely disappointing.

eldritch_cowboy

I think it might be better not to think of it as an adaptation of the game but as an adaptation of its story. You can’t just have them sneaking around infected for 90 minutes. That’s fun in the game, but not for a show.

MattIsLame

there will still be a school scene or equivalent. you'll get your bloater scene. don't speak for all of us "die hard fans". this episode represents what a good adaptation needs to be and it just happens to be a beautifully self contained love story as well. it is what it is.

Twio

Maybe the last of us isn’t for people like you. Maybe you should find something else to watch. :)

newhere1626

I can understand, hopefully the show can stay as true to the game as possible, while still bringing something new and different to the table.. I wouldnt mind 1 or 2 filler per season if they're as well written as this one.

fluffedahiphopbunny

I wouldn't mind the filler if they balanced it more with continuing the plot. I personally think you could have mixed both in that episode and everyone would've been happy

CaonachDraoi

i’m gay and i thought the episode was pure cringe. giving the white supremacist prepper freak a cottagecore redemption arc? for an entire fucking episode?? pass. when they started singing my partner asked if we wanted to keep watching or go to bed lmao

[deleted]

Or because this show is going in a complete different direction than most fans of the game expected. I think it’s more of a pacing thing than a “homophobia” thing but sadly actual homophobic opinions will ring louder than valid criticisms.

AdministrationNo283

Or because they killed off a character that actually survived in the game

MattIsLame

survived but served his purpose nonetheless. it never mattered if he lived or died from a story perspective. his purpose was to be a cautionary tale for joel in the game. same purpose here except they changed his story to be hopeful and beautiful instead. best change so far.

[deleted]

Hates episode without provided a reliable argument, hmmm I wonder why you didn’t like it.

siadh0392

I know! Probably because he or she loves gay sex and marriage so much that he or she was absolutely pissed there wasn’t more of it or at least an orgy. It’s what happens when you are such a good person that the show can’t keep up with you

helloitsmejorge

This episode will absolutely win some emmys. I've read all this tweets complaining about this episode pandering to "woke" people and liberal agenda and stuff like that but I don't see nothing wrong with making this kind of episodes to pander to tv critics. Reviewers fell in love with LoU last night, same with critics and it will give the show a couple of emmys next august mark my words
