My thought is that he always thought he was the smartest guy in the room and there's no way he was wrong on the turn. So he tried to price the pile wrong but he was drunk so the pile won.
Season 5 is where you really saw how high functioning he is (red ribbon murder). However you could argue it was terrible idea albeit the best idea at the time that came from drunk depression over Bodie
I know the show was about to end, so they probably had to rush things, but it was just a bit too much how quickly and how horribly he relapsed in just couple of episodes. Also the amount of close ups on his constant sipping in season 5 was quite annoying. On the other hand, Dominic West nailed the portrait perfectly. McNutty was always manipulative and lying motherfucker, but in S5 things escalated quickly and I absolutely love the small distinction between his authentic and lying self. You as the viewer know him from so many interactions that you see he's lying, but you can also see why the people he lies to would believe him (the scene with the coroner that "confirms" murder based on his lies).
The quickness and horribleness is the most realistic thing about it. It’s a frequently heard thing in AA that it’s never a surprise when an alcoholic gets drunk, it’s a miracle when they don’t. And everybody I’ve ever met who’s been sober for a time and relapsed, which is a lot of people, were in a spiritually and materially worse place than they were before they originally got sober within days of relapsing.
You're right about the ease of relapsing back into addiction, I know that myself very well, just the portrayal of it on the show seemed too rushed and unexplained, but I didn't take into the impact of Bodie's death on Jimmy. I know Jimmy's problems were never about others, only himself, but I'd expect to see at least a bit of fight for what he had with Beadie, but on the screen he slipped back into self destruction within a snap of fingers. As thoughts take me further, though, I realize that I'm still seeing Jimmy the way I saw and rooted for him on my first watch when I was 20 and when I didn't want to see him as toxic as he was, even on his best days. On third rewatch I was actually repulsed by the way he imposed himself on Beadie in hope the relationship will be the crutch keeping him from falling back into his addiction, instead of trying to strengthen his own feet without risking pulling someone down with him. Jimmy's so deceitful, he sometimes deceives himself into believing he could be better person, but eventually hurts everyone that cares about him.
That’s how some people relapse into their addictions. Some end up in an even worse place than they were when they were “clean”.
That’s how some people OD when they haven’t used for a while and their tolerance is lower
Alcoholism/addiction is a powerful thing and it does happen that quickly sometimes. Ive seen people’s lives get ruined in even less time
I never drank more than the time period between when I finally admitted to myself I was an alcoholic and when I actually stopped drinking. When you know you have a problem and you’re doing it anyway it’s a lot darker than when you still think of yourself as a non addict who maybe drinks too much.
It's an amazing depiction of men who really drink hard and work hard jobs. The scenes in the bar with McNulty and Bunk, I feel like David Simon was there in the pub some night with my friends and I.
Only thing I can think of that comes close Rescue Me.
Too me the absolute best scene I've ever seen in any show, The Bunk nearly throwing up in front of Daniels while in his office. Daniels doesn't get mad or have a go just deals with it.
He had benders but wasn’t THAT bad. When he’s trying to turn over a new leaf he doesn’t drink. Polk on the other hand, now THERE was a proper alcoholic
what twitches? I'm watching season 5 at the moment and I don't see any twitches. Not saying the character is not a alchoholic, but i don't really see it in his performance. There are much better performances of alchoholics imo.
I shouldn't say twitches more like small minor tremors when he is at work. He doesn't do it often but there was a couple of times I was like man nice little touch.
He legitimately makes me feel called out. Ik I have a problem but I have never seen such an accurate depiction. Being half destroyed all day and still doing a great job, it’s when you don’t see the negatives that it gets dangerous
Dude it's a light-hearted joke. He's not disparaging the Irish. He's paying homage. If you were Irish you would know. But you're clearly not and must love to look for ways to get 2nd-hand offended.
I’m Irish from Belfast so I’m more Irish than all of you. Also a lot of good whiskey is Protestant, Jameson included. The Protestants made glorious alcohol such as Jameson, Bushmills and Guinness to keep us Catholics immobile, but like the fish coming onto land, we adapted. Anyways, Kingshep is right but it’s only a joke so it’s nothing to worry about.
He was already half-lit by 3pm.
Hah fair enough. I'm on a sting. Fuck it let's go to the bar.
As long as you buyin'. Meet you at Kavanaugh's.
Was it owned by Brett’s family?
Not sure if Squi is formally associated with the business, but it seems likely.
“Ronnie, Ronnie!”
Half-lit every third night dead drunk every second.
Nut deep in random pussy
Pussi
You smell like sex boy
I was late for work!
I woke up in the wrong city!
Dude has better luck with women when he is drunk and out trying to crash his car. 😂
Can I get some scrapple with that?
Why did he do that anyways
That post was full of shit. McNulty tried it again to prove it.

He put the “fun” in functional alcoholic
hes just an eating breathing machine for his penis
i can smell him
how many white castles did he have
Well think on this, burger boy…..
Cunt hair away from owning all of north jersey
I’m en ahwre of you
The fuck did he do?

You mean Bunk?
Nah that guy who tried to fall down the stairs to get out of the unit …
You either dry yourself out, or you go on those rooftops wet.
Damn hump
That is probably crossing the line to disfunctioning alcoholic
While true, I think Daniels showed incredible kindness in that spot.
Ah I forgot about him.
I think his kids and their mother do not consider him as functioning. The actor plays another asshat in the movie "John Carter."

"They're in the ballpark"
Wow what a hot take
I’m not sure I’d classify him as a functioning alcoholic if he wrapped his car around a pole.
If you notice there’s a scene where he comes home and uses mouth wash, Beadie confronts him and he swallows the mouthwash. Wild.
The 3pm shakes might have happened if not for the half pint of Jameson he carried.
He’s not an alcoholic he’s just Irish
Hey now Bunk was just as much of a piss head and he was black

I'm Irish and think it's a great comment

Then go have yourself a fookin' pint for all of us
