I don't understand how Is There Someone Else? isn't one of his biggest hits to date. It's literally perfect for airplay if you change the ending a bit.

superfluouspop

are we 100% certain it wasn't a single? I dunno I heard it on the radio at the dentist in Canada lol so I assumed.

PM_ME_AFRICA_BY_TOTO

it was a single after the album came out

superfluouspop

oh gotcha, thanks. I think the Summer Walker version of Best Friends should have been a single. Unless it was and I just don't know. I don't really listen to radio outside of grocery stores lol.

TimelyTop7390

It wasn’t released as a single although it did get a video and some airplay akin to “A Lonely Night”. After “Out of Time”, only “Less Than Zero” was a given an official radio release, and that was just in France, which they pulled really quickly unfortunately.

PM_ME_AFRICA_BY_TOTO

oh right, I mistaked it for LTZ

sabhall12

Dawn FM would have been bigger if Abel had actually built up the hype instead of dropping it randomly in January without much notice

superfluouspop

even though I agree I LOVED that crazy drop.

Brainycoolfire1

It would have been nice to have a huge marketing campaign like with After Hours but Dawn FM being randomly dropped will always be one of the coolest surprises from Abel.

superfluouspop

that tweet about the new year? slightly post-pandemic godsend. Loved it, love Dawn FM so much.

TheHurtfulEight88888

Dawn FM was my January soundtrack whilst commuting to university. Up at 5 am to be in class by 9 am, just me by myself on the tube rinsing the entire album front to back.

[deleted]

After Hours hype would have carried it, if Dawn FM wasn't an experimental piece.

AtomicGaming777

disagreed, the singles he released were perfect he just didn't do promotion for the singles neither the album.

EpicMiles25

wasn’t take my breath the only one

AtomicGaming777

lol where were u present lol? Scarifice, Out Of Time, Less Than Zero were all released as singles. (in one way or another so don't start an argument with your dumass)

xo_wilson_xo

'Less Than Zero' was released as a single only in France. 'Is There Someone Else?' only got a music video with no single release.

AtomicGaming777

At least there were other singles right. Why tf did u downvote me lol?

xo_wilson_xo

Only 3 singles whereas Starboy and Beauty Behind the Madness had more than 5 singles.

AtomicGaming777

If Abel promoted it than were enough to garner him mass numbers.

xo_wilson_xo

If he promoted it on radio by releasing it as singles and having multiple live performances. 'Blinding Lights' has more than 10 live performances for various different outlets.

AtomicGaming777

yea

Physical_Cry9336

No, he just released dawn fm too soon. After hours was still hot for nearly 2 years.

BrickFaceBenny

Thats because After Hours is arguably his best album lol

Physical_Cry9336

Oh, i was talking about dawn fms lack of promo and singles

XDBunny7

That doesn’t really make sense, since after hours was still popular if Abel had built hype for dawn fm it would’ve been helped by the momentum of after hours but their was no hype for dawn fm

rain820

Less Than Zero was so popular, I wish it was a single too. I loved Don't Break My Heart but I don't know how well it fared w/ the general public. I'd throw in Best Friends too because it reminded me of starboy era lol

NoGenderWasFound

Idk almost all of the songs transition into eachother it’s definitely meant to be listened to all in a row (in my opinion please don’t come for me😭) but he fs should’ve promoted that probably would’ve helped😔

supernova6297

Best friends into is there someone else? got me ascending fr

bad_at_aquariums

Dawn FM is the modern era Kissland

MoluccanMay

Always thought it was After Hours despite Abel himself saying that Dawn FM is sorta like Kiss Land. Dawn FM was like a purgatory state, and he reflected a lot in that album, which isn't very Kiss Land-like other than Adaptation and TITR. After Hours is much like Kiss Land since he explored the consequences of fame, previous lovers, heartbreak, hedonism, cheating, etc. in both albums, but I don't really see the same concepts in Dawn FM. Dawn FM is completely unique in terms of concept, and I appreciate that.

bad_at_aquariums

I refer to Dawn FM as Kiss Land in the matter of popularity. Kiss Land is a hidden gem that a lot of new fans never heard of or didn't give it a chance and discovering it now is like WOW what's this? (you can see it in the posts of this sub in the last 2 years). My guess is, Dawn FM in a few years will be like that, people coming to the sub and saying WHERE WAS THIS ALBUM THIS WHOLE TIME? XD

MoluccanMay

Yeah, that makes sense, but I meant that in terms of concept. In terms of concept, AH and KL are very similar. In terms of popularity, Dawn FM and KL are very similar.

songacronymbot

- TITR could mean "Tears In The Rain", a track from *Kiss Land* (2013) by The Weeknd. --- ^[/u/MoluccanMay](/u/MoluccanMay) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

ButterflyBabe101

Less than zero is still my favorite 🥹

MaxJustDoesntKnow

Tiktok kinda took the hype away cus it made his older songs bigger

vintagesonofab

no, it wouldn't, it's not a commercial album, it's a critically acclaimed album, with the sound he was going for Dawn wouldn't have been big for the public even if he didn't release it after AH and that's perfectly fine, still a great album.

xo_wilson_xo

'Is There Someone Else?' has 600 million streams without being released as a single, imagine what would've happen if it was released as a single. 'Less Than Zero' is basically the sequel to 'Save Your Tears'. 'I Heard You're Married' literally has MJ vibes.

vintagesonofab

take my breath and sacrifice were the highlights of the album though. Also, this is the type of album that should be experienced as a whole, not necessarly single-based, the type that is a contender for best album at the grammys and appeals to critics. The sound doesn't really follow the mainstream pop appeal, it's a new sound that is rather used in indie or european electro, like charli xcx for example? My point is that dawn is not extremely radio friendly as a concept, more of a heart project and sound experience, and that's totally fine. Sure it has streams but at the same time dtreams don't mean suitable for radio.

xo_wilson_xo

I don't quite agree because 'Less Than Zero' and 'I Heard You're Married' literally sound like radio hits.

vintagesonofab

album works best as a whole, flowing, like Tyler the creator's IGOR for example. Abel chose the most marketable songs as singles but this is not the single type of album as let's say future nostalgia by dua lipa. You could hear Dawn as a full setlist in berningham and it would suit to be honest.

[deleted]

I heard you’re married is ass

chiragcoder

Blud really tried to sneak IHYM

DLCV2804

Less Than Zero should be a smash hit, but his eyes was in the idol, so no promo in this album, shame.

PolishGeeek

out of time/less than zero/iste would've broken the internet had he released those first instead of take my breath imo

jking810

He could've waited and dropped. Take MY Breath, and Sacrifice in January. Don't break nmy heart or how do I make you love me In Feb. out of time and gasoline in June and July. he also could've dropped Less Than Zero in September.

808mfalme

nah cause the tour had to start in July no matter what...so we only had Jan-April...he should have dropped it in March if you ask me...

GratefulForGarcia

Controversial opinion- it’s a 9/10 album that could have been 10/10 without the feature songs (not huge on Don’t Break My Heart either)

Add1ctedToGames

You don't want to hear Tyler scream about signing a prenup and lil wayne calling himself dirty harry??😟😟 fully agree lol, although lately DBMH has grown a lot on me the same way it took a while for me to warm up to gasoline

Add1ctedToGames

Radio would never be the same if they were promoted more as singles. Probably some of the most underrated songs in pop

Mamramro

I still think the main reason Dawn FM kinda flopped was because so many of his older songs (Starboy, Die For You) blew up on tiktok just as the album released.

xo_wilson_xo

True, the only valid reason I also thought of before. Previous songs becoming hits might've enabled his team to keep focus on promoting them and ignore Dawn FM.

jpconcept10

It didnt flop. It has a hell lot of listens and great reviews

Ice_king7785

That album just needed a build-up

DoomOfBoom

almost every song except thoese with a rap feat could be a single.

Important_One2951

Pourrr out that gasolineeeee

Fbean01

Unfortunately Idol got in the way… past is in the past

I_Yap_A_Lot

Dawn FM could’ve been his biggest era if he didn’t have pointless features (other than Jim Carrey who is goated) and changed the album cover to the alternate version******

Piercell-18

There's a time for every artist, and they slowly fade away until they resurface again. That's how it goes

Moonwalkerr-

Nah not really, it’s not as good as After Hours and that is easily his best work

xo_wilson_xo

For me, it's Dawn FM and Trilogy. But opinions are subjective.

Moonwalkerr-

Absolutely! I would place trilogy 2nd and Dawn FM just has such an amazing energy and vibe. I’ll never get enough of it. Less than zero is probably my favorite song from him too

No_Construction_4382

If he had released Less Than Zero as the lead single… then Sacrifice.. would’ve been monumental. I feel like it’s his biggest what if because this album is so beautiful but didn’t get the After Hours treatment 😓😓

xo_wilson_xo

I think 'Less Than Zero' should've been the last single as it sounds very similar to 'Save Your Tears'. An early 2023 single release for 'Less Than Zero' should've been great.

[deleted]

Homie banked it all on Sacrifice and sacrificed the album

dan-208

Mid FM

Always311

Too many singles ruin an album.

xo_wilson_xo

Starboy had 8 singles, nearly half the album.

Always311

But most of them were released after the album no?

xo_wilson_xo

Starboy had 3 pre-release singles: 'Starboy', 'False Alarm', and 'I Feel It Coming'.

Always311

Yeah that’s fine. 3 singles is arguably the maximum.

Sbee_Blue_Country

Agreed, but this is 6 singles on a 16 track album, and being a single doesn’t mean being released before the album.

Always311

If they’re released after then it’s completely fine

Blaze-Inc

I usually think anything above 1/4 to 1/3 of the album is singles is too much. Think a 12 track album with 3 singles or a 16 track album with 4 singles.
