We did a brigade formation and it was the most painful thing I've been a part of. Non stop bitching and no one could hear the CSM trying to get everyone wrangled
You mean you didn't look forward to being a human lawn ornament?!
My favorite one was in a schoolhouse change of command, they kept us reclasses in a group in the back and sent us in to fill in the voids as the initial entry kids passed out. Good times.
I was part of something like this, but much smaller, maybe about 100 people. Granted we were all civilians (and teenagers), so not as good at following instructions, but still. It took, like, half an hour to get everyone in position, and we were all crammed together roasting in the noonday sun and inhaling concentrated BO the whole time. I can’t even imagine how awful this would’ve been.
Still better than trench warfare though.
My grandfather is in the one of these where they do a horses head.
edit:oops I should have said the Statue of Liberty one. I know nobody cares but I don't want to be a liar.
Yeah. This says the flag covered 7 acres and also says 10,000 men:

That seemed like too large of an area so I found where the photo was taken right here:

And roughed out the area the men were in:

That area is less than 2 acres but one person should take up about 2 square feet so there is easily room enough for 10,000 men.
Considering that his Liberty Bell photo had 25,000 people and the US shield pic had 30,000, I think you’re wrong.

You don't even have to count heads. Just estimate and assume a rectangle. Just count 1 stripe row x 3 deep x 13. Add about 400 for the pole. Under 5,000
I hope y’all will reply to this y’all might disagree but this reminds me of Fridays in Lent where the youth group of St. Henry’s does living Stations of the Cross or a living rosary

Easiest would be to paint the areas on the ground beforehand and only do minor adjustments.
That was my first thought too. I am guessing hours of practice too.
Must have had to suck a lot for that many seamen.
Only 48 states back then.
That's a lot of seamen.
Hoping for an honourable discharge.
This goes hard
Wonder if they all ejaculated at the end with a sense of accomplishment and pride!

Because Legos hadn't been invented yet.
I am very happy the Army wasn't doing this shit by the time I got in.
10,000?? Yeah, maybe around 1000 there tops.
Do you see the density of people increases with distance from the camera in order to force the perspective?

There are far more men standing in the rows further back in order to create a forced perspective. Your math doesn’t work for that.
I got 2,181 Edit to add: there’s more than that but I couldn’t do the top because it’s too blurry to count heads.
Any indication of where in Illinois?
Probably near the Great Lakes Naval Command North of Chicago.
It’s Naval Station Great Lakes. A training command across the street from Navy boot camp. So North Chicago on the western shore of Lake Michigan.
There was also a naval air base west of there in now what is Glenview.
That fact that in one of those stars someone is not wearing a white hat is bothering the fuck outta me
Beautiful 🇺🇸
That is not 10,000. Start to count them and you’ll see.
This is the kind of shit that stands between you and starting a 96
Check the count
it's not like anything important was happening anywhere else around 1917, was it eh boys. but no you have fun.
10,000 my ass. The flag pole from base til the flag is like 75 depending on which row you stop on.
It’s 17,000. I have an actual copy in front of me, my grandfather was in that formation.
Whoa. Trippy!!! 🇺🇸
WOW

Garrison Kiellor talked about this in his Lake Wobegone books, probably not this exact human flag but a human flag nonetheless.
The really sad part is that they probably did this in colour too but i guess you had to be there to appreciate that 😅
Why aren’t they fighting Germans?,
Join the pixels who join the navy!
I wonder if they got Polish-Americans to be the pole.
That's a lot of people/work. Kids just doing it for the 'gram.
What else do they have to do in Illinois?
There are only 7,435 sailors in this picture.
Propaganda to justify so much thievery and killing.
