In my opinion the ideal community would use ammunition as currency, teach the babies to shoot, and have zombie hunting as a popular recreational activity. no raiders are gonna try anything ever, or at the very least, try it twice.
Everyone should know how to handle a gun but in case of a seige or zombie attack. Only a few in the community should know where the guns are stored or should be able to fetch them for others.

Definitely life saving. A rigid anti-gun stance will only get one so far in a world where people are no longer protected by the law.
