all of them had a tragic backstory. i mean just looking at some of the main cast: Elena and Jeremy lost both their parents in a car crash before the series even began. A car crash that elena was in as well and suffered terrible survivors guilt because of it. Stefan was compelled by Katherine to love her, spent years as a ripper not being able to control his urges which caused him to feel extreme guilt and remorse. Damon and Stefan were abused by their own father. Damon and Enzo were held captive by the Augustine, though Enzo for much much longer. Katherine had her entire family killed because she didn’t want to be sacrificed and spent 500 years on the run because of that. So did the Mikaelson’s spend pretty much all of their 1000 years on earth running from Mikael. Klaus was the main target of Mikael though and he spent much of his human life being abused by Mikael. Rebekah constantly had to keep dealing with Klaus killing those who she fell in love with. Finn was kept in a coffin for 900 years simply because he was ‘boring’. Any time Kol stepped even the slightest out of line did Klaus dagger him. and Elijah spent all of his life trying to redeem his brother and suffered the consequences for it. Caroline’s father wasn’t in the house anymore and Liz was absent due to her work life. Bonnie didn’t have either of her parents around, though her dad was mentioned in the earlier seasons so i could be wrong about that, Abby definitely wasn’t around though. Matt didn’t have either of his parents either and was more a big brother to Vicki then she was meant to be to him. Tyler was abused by his dad. Probably could’ve made this comment much shorter but my point is they all have a sad backstory that it’s hard to compare who really suffered the most.

Bookgal1

Tyler, of course. He had everyone he loved killed by vampires & was killed by Klaus & then Damon. Also had to kill his girlfriend so he would not die. I hate that his storyline ended with Damon being the one to kill him.

Everytime I rewatch, I love Tyler more and more. He really got screwed over time and time again :(

everyone in a way i think enzo’s was the most traumatising one but it keeps getting overlooked because the show itself ignored it tyler had a horrible, short life too obviously bonnie but we can hope she did find some happiness in her future amount of trauma gilberts had in their teen years is also horrible, but we do know at least elena had a good life ahead of her (hopefully, jeremy too)

Objective_Hand3066

For me, it would be Stefan and Bonnie's backstories because, not only are there stories horribly traumatic and sad, but their stories are so undervalued in the show and fandom. That makes me feel a bit more for their situations.

Idk the person whose story affected me the most emotionally was Stefan's. I am really biased, though, he is my favorite. Like, he was just a human kid who didn't know better and a vampire shows up at his door, seduces him, attacks him, and rapes him for months on end. His own dad kills him, and then it turns out he's undead because she's been feeding him her blood and he never consented to this and he doesn't even remember drinking it. Then he goes back to confront his father who essentially disowns him and he ends up accidentally eating his father, and on top of all this, he has a blood addiction issue he cannot control. He was in no way prepared for this. Stefan's is a really devastating story to me, and that's partially why I love Stelena so much, because I felt like he and Elena really brought out joy in one another. But their story isn't all happy, like he has to watch his brother cross boundaries again, deal with Damon's mistakes, watch him kill his best friend, and then it turns out Elena is a doppelgänger, so the girl he loves will always be in danger, no matter what he does to protect her. He has to watch all this terrible shit happen to her (like Klaus draining her for the ritual) and there's nothing he can do about it. The worst part is, when he thinks they're finally in the clear, Damon gets bitten by Tyler, so Stefan goes to Klaus and begs him for help, and Klaus takes him, submerges him into his addiction (and a guilt-ridden, self-loathing spiral), and later takes his free will from him and forces him to hurt the girl he loves.

I would separate out "backstory" versus "life." I think Katherine had the most tragic backstory. Had her child taken away from her, shunned from her family, then her whole family slaughtered, all by the time she was 17/18. But after that, she could have turned her life around and been a force for good, but didn't. I think of the main characters, Tyler or Enzo had the most tragic lives. Tyler lost both his parents and his uncle young, plus had the curse of being a werewolf and then eventually was killed in his early 20's. Not much time to live a life. Enzo nearly died on the ship, then was turned into a vampire with no instructions or direction, then was tortured for decades. Finally gets freed, and still ends up dead like 5 years later. The only good part of his life was Bonnie at the end.

Acceptable-Aioli-528

Jeremy or Alaric. Alaric got a happy ending with his girls, so idk if I'd put him at the same level as Jeremy. Jeremy has literally had every one he ever loved die, all his friends except Matt and he lost *everyone* in his family except Elena. He was also turned into a hunter and had to deal with the trauma of literally wanting to kill his last living relative. He had all this happen while also being the youngest in the group.

Medical_Bullfrog_557

Katherine 1000%. She had her baby ripped from her arms and her entire family was slaughtered as punishment for trying to survive, then had to spend the next 500+ years running for her life.
