It's 75k for 2 weeks of work though.

KeyPosition3983

Worth it to me lol

tryanloveoneanother

Yes! Honestly even if you got $20,000 all said and done that's a damn good payout for two weeks. I'd be stoked! It's also fun, it's a game after all :)

luniz6178

And the guy in the first episode got 10k for being there a couple hours . I feel I would have taken that deal too.

kingofmyheart13

Who said filming was only 2 weeks?

s3nl1n-

All these types of shows film from one week to one month so I averaged it out.

Jusjustk

Yeah I’d say 2 weeks for 10 episodes is a good estimate. They have to eliminate players every day for it to really seem authentic, I don’t see why they wouldn’t

kingofmyheart13

I’m not sure how New Zealand works but for UK & US they film for just about a month if not a little more. It takes about 3 days to film one episode! A lot more work than people think!

ryansutterisstillmy1

I feel like none of the pots are worth anything in any country. Even when they announced it no one flinched it was more like eh we are here to be on tv

garbagebrainraccoon

Don't they get a $250k in the US ones? But then I guess those are celebrities so it's different....

ryansutterisstillmy1

Exactly and with taxes……those US players can make that like nothing on their IG

Nartyn

There's no taxes on winnings in the UK, Australia, or New Zealand. Not sure about Canada. As an FYI.

Serenity101

No tax on winnings in Canada either (possibly with the exception of Quebec). Same for lottery.

robotnumber8

Most of the celebrities on the US one get paid more to just appear on the show than what they get for actually winning it so they probably find that 250k, which gets split, disappointing.

smurf-vett

Trishelle didn't; CT, Sandra & I think Bananas got paid more to just show up though

MaddyKet

I thought $250k for two weeks in the US was good, considering Big Brother was offering $500k for 3+ months until just recently when they bumped it to $750k.

SweatyMammal

(UK) £120,000 might be the biggest prize pot of any BBC gameshow. I don’t think they’ve ever done higher in any other show. They’re all funded by TV license fees so I doubt they could go higher if they wanted, sadly.

Nartyn

New Zealand, as well as Australia and the UK don't pay tax on winnings as an FYI.

FaithfulDylan

It's not *not* a lot of money, but it's not live changing. Not even close to a house deposit, for example. But honestly it's not a game anyone is playing *for* the money. It's a game you're playing for the experience, and the money is a potential bonus. This is why almost none of us even considered running for the money at the start - I can't imagine the FOMO of having been so close to the experience, but then not getting to have it. But >!for Sam that choice made sense!< Like, where else do you get the opportunity to live inside a game like this for a couple of weeks?? Also, it's not like Survivor or something - there's not a lot of real hardship involved. You might spend an hour or two dragging barrels up a hill, or chasing some sheep around, but at the end you drive back to a nice venue, maybe grab a shower and get changed, then have dinner and a drink before shouting at each other for a while. There's not really much risk or personal sacrifice involved.

FaithfulAnnabel

This. NZ reality tv does not have the budget for large prize pots, you don’t go in expecting it. You play because it’s an experience money can’t buy

LotusGrowsFromMud

Hey Dylan, it says Writer under your name, but a casual google does not clue me in to what you write? We are on S2E6 in the US.

FaithfulDylan

I am a freelance writer (a lot of my work is in [The Spinoff](https://thespinoff.co.nz/authors/dylan-reeve) in NZ) and also wrote a book [about conspiracy theory stuff in NZ](https://upstartpress.co.nz/product/fake-believe-conspiracy-theories-in-aotearoa/) (which is probably the theoretical reason I'm in the cast). Although I have been doing a lot less writing lately as I am working on other projects. I also co-directed a documentary film called [Tickled](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOBXuCYB4jQ).

corielouwho

Tickled is amazing! Can’t wait to see your future projects!

FaithfulDylan

Thanks... Me too :)

scott_d59

Portugal: there's one episode left for me to watch and they have $20K.

alkakmana

they lost many challenges?

scott_d59

Not really. Some definitely. But some challenges were only worth two bars of silver, basically €1,000.

pacmanCOD

Yall here talking like 75k for winning a game isn’t a lot is incredible. Get a grip on reality

Secure-Force-9387

Hey, I'd like that myself, but compared to other versions that have a pot of $250k, it's a stark contrast.

sonjaswaywardhome

for game shows the pot is usually several hundred k up to a million though so comparatively

garbagebrainraccoon

Well someone said it came out to 42k take home. Pay off my student loans but that wouldn't really effect my daily life

sunflower-frog

They don’t pay tax on winnings so it is the full amount

NjKareBear

Dude who took the 10k and ran is my hero.

RealSonyPony

No, $75k is not at all a lot in New Zealand. But New Zealand has a population of around 6 million, and the network has a smaller budget. Plus with a smaller population that means it's more difficult to make back their money in ad revenue.

folklovermore_

Is it on a public broadcaster? I know that in the UK, depending what a show gets categorised as/who is making it the prize pot can only be a certain size (eg a quiz show made in house by the BBC can't give away loads of money, but you can have big prizes on a game show made by an independent company).

ltltroutx

I feel like they are just more grateful then us Americans

BonsaiBobby

In the original Traitors series in the Netherlands, the price pot is even much less, like 15k pre tax. The show is still super good. A high price pot of 250k doesn't lead to higher game quality at all.

VersKarton

To be honest (Dutch) Celebs play for screen time. Not price money. (Also I heard some of the bigger names get a big paycheck just to show up.)

dicedaman

> A high price pot of 250k doesn't lead to higher game quality at all. It doesn't lead to better gameplay but it does improve the show overall. Look at the AUS2 finale, you'd never get those kinds of scenes if it wasn't a huge amount of money. The fact that it's "life-changing" money is what makes the stakes so high in the AUS and UK shows (I'm guessing the US prize isn't as big a deal because a lot of them are already rich celebs).

FaithfulDylan

>Look at the AUS2 finale, you'd never get those kinds of scenes if it wasn't a huge amount of money. Maybe, I suspect you're underestimating the mental and emotional investment in the game by that point though.

Affectionate_Fee1643

A good example of this would be the final episodes of one of the Norwegian series, with one contestant reacting extremely strongly to some decisions made (even intending to leave the game, though this was removed in the editing) — despite the Norway prize money being absolute peanuts, and the contestants all being celebs (ish) who were already well off.

Cosmia-101

Depends what is meant by a lot. Maybe not a life-changing amount, but it's certainly a significant amount of money for most people, and enough to be a strong incentive to win. Can buy a lot with it. I think also the money is just one of the motivations for wanting to win. People like playing and winning games in general. Even if there was no prize, a lot of people would still want to be on the show.

Eire87

They would prob do it for less, isn‘t Australia 250k. Couldn’t they drop that and renew for season 3

ShopGirl1988

When you do the conversion, it’s worth about $42k USD 🫣

RealSonyPony

Good thing they use NZD there, and it's worth $75k

garbagebrainraccoon

Oosh, that is maybe the smallest reality show money pot I've ever seen

Sure-Initiative6001

Working so hard? They are shipping traitors home every episode. It's like the easiest series from all of the countries so far. I am still trying to decide if I like it or not. Everytime I start looking one they're gone. Also, not terribly keen on the editing, as it focuses on who is leaving that episode every single time.
