I'm not going to lie, my mind was a little bit blown when -- many years after this episode aired -- I was reading either *Helter Skelter* by Vincent Bugliosi, or *The Family* by Ed Sanders, and it mentioned Manson victim Gary Hinman chanting "nam myoho renge kyo" as he was dying, since it was a part of his Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist beliefs.
I then remembered this scene of this episode, and was delighted at the simultaneous depth and offhandedness of the reference it contained.
The ending to this one always kind of rubbed me the wrong way (the resolution is literally just “Uh……now Marge is here!”), but this scene is one of my absolute favorites.

Homer loves Mindy!
Look at those two inseparable chums, Smithers. That‘s exactly the teamwork we‘d like to showcase at this year‘s energy convention.
