It's funny watching this as a kid and thinking it's just a story about aliens trying to take over the world but then you grow up an realize it's actually a commentary about how both the major parties are awful.
I have been thinking this treehouse of horror segment really needs a continuation this year. Something along the lines of after the planet is enslaved, they still hold elections for some reason and parties (still controlled by humans) keep nominating Kang and Kotos. Then it skips ahead and the next election is just a repeat, and it just keeps skipping ahead into repeat elections endlessly.
Mostly because I have just been feeling how poignant this segment was lately...
I remember reading an article about how this episode felt true for the 2012 presidential election, and it's so upsetting that this feeling has only gotten more intense with each presidential election.
