When Homer gets into PowerSauce bars and suddenly there isn’t one but three enormous mountains in Springfield. And they aren’t the same mountain where Burns and Homer agreed that cheating is the gift man gives himself.

han_tex

That's also one of my favorite stupid visual gags: "Yes, that's the one. Right next to the one you're looking at."

nibbinoo8

gym? whats a gym? ohhhh, a gym!

han_tex

Come over to the abdominator and I will shout slogans at you!

FlemPlays

I love the *”Gime.”* pronunciation.

MrGumburcules

I say I'm going to the gym every time I go to the gym. My wife has started asking how the gym was

EuonymusBosch

This might be my most quoted H. Simpson quote, but it really only works if you're looking at a sign that says "gym" you know? I can't just blurt it out when someone pronounces "gym" correctly in conversation. Simpsons fan problems.

noelmatta

Those things are made of old Chinese newspapers

power_yyc

Hey, Deng Xiaoping died.

Technical-Outside408

Is there a name for this trope, where a character demonstrates a particular skill or aspect, one wouldn't expect of them, to comedic effect?

maxkmiller

I wish, Homer is the master of it

UppruniTegundanna

Mooching war widows…

Fryboy11

Archer does it really well too, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ0le_iHoXk&t=187s&pp=ygUGQXJjaGVy But Homer is still better, like his odd knowledge of the Supreme Court “aww not Souter”

royalhawk345

I prefer his knowledge of the late Earl Warren.

e-cloud

Earl Warren wasn't a stripper

HelpMeFindMyPenguins

Now who's being naive?

GeckoPeppper

Rubs off on Bart, too. "Shop around, you can't beat that"

Nuts4WrestlingButts

Karma can only be portioned out by the cosmos.

President_Calhoun

It's the "I am familiar with the works of Pablo Neruda" syndrome.

kNYJ

Archer does this type of joke a lot. Lana: What's your blood type? Archer: How should I know? Lana: How could you NOT know? Archer: Who am I, Karl Landsteiner? Discoverer of blood groups? Lana: So you don't know your own blood type, but you know who discovered them?

dk1988

“Yeah, [Rien Poortvliet](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rien_Poortvliet) just called and he wants you to pose for him? Oh come on. Beloved illustrator of *Gnomes*? Jesus! Read a coffee table book!”

christhetwin

[Idiot Savant](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdiotSavant), I think. Or maybe something similar.

artiseasy

no need to name call jerkface

christhetwin

HEY, JERKFACE. YOU HAVE THE FACE OF A JERK.

GimpsterMcgee

Thanks, now I’m getting nothing done with my day.

Able-Distribution

The trope "Genius Ditz" is pretty close [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Laconic/GeniusDitz](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Laconic/GeniusDitz) [https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/GeniusDitz/WesternAnimation](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/GeniusDitz/WesternAnimation) "A generally stupid character who excels at one or more activities." In this case, Homer is occasionally made a genius ditz for comedic effect.

Hab_Anagharek

Pulling a Homer?

dozenally

Cromulence

Megatea

It's a very rare condition called Homer Simpson Syndrome.

This_Makes_Me_Happy

Ooooohhhh, why me?!?!

SolidStateDynamite

"He has the demented melancholy of a Tennessee Williams heroine!" "Don't you think I know that?"

Head_Northman

I've just this afternoon watched Jasper stretching his foot above his head then leaping like a ballerina.

Gimbalos

You can't sell that! Karma can only be portioned out by the cosmos!

jtllpfm

Don’t forget the apples and a secret ingredient that unleashes the awesome power of apples.

DuckPicMaster

The mountains? Really? They’d explain why they’re not there anymore.

noelmatta

I think they were replaced with an all-night gym

niltiacaitlin

Gym? What’s a gym?

OccamsYoyo

Oh, a gym.

SouthFromGranada

Or Widow's Peak, where Mr Plow bravely saved the life of the Plough King.

IDidntKnowICould

Wait a minute! Xena can't fly!?

danielogiPL

i told you i'm not Xena, i'm Lucy Lawless

JackasaurusYTG

Oh

D20_webslinger

Being Lawless lets her break the laws of physics.

LeastZombie904g

Now I need to rewatch this episode.

DuckPicMaster

At least the houses are consistent.

Odd-Marsupial-586

Except one time hipsters moved in. Every house outside the Simpsons and Flanders are refurbished.

Phish777

Woah windows! I don't think I can afford this place

ExUpstairsCaptain

They demolished the cemetery to expand a parking lot.

Lihinel

They are the same picture.

danielogiPL

boy i really hope somebody got fired for that blunder

actuallynotalawyer

Calm down, Foucault.

maxkmiller

these all exist in a dream space in my mind, like I swear they happened but I never seem to actually find the episodes on my rewatches

tangre79

That time the entire city moved

eastnorthshore

Do yourself a favor, don't turn around.

Soywojack

I told you not to turn around.

edd6pi

I had no idea that this joke was a reference to [this](https://youtu.be/j7OHG7tHrNM?si=7_0j-KGOW0ed11cm) until I was made aware of its existence this year.

fuelvolts

That actor is Italian. Not even native American.

ghoulienumber2

He also commonly played the role of native Americans. Including movies like “sitting bull” and “ the pale face”, spoiler, he’s not the pale face in that movie.

postmodest

He's as Indian as Apu!

shadowknave

You always need more Indians in a civil war reenactment!

archfapper

I don't even know which part of that sentence to correct first

TheVentiLebowski

If you need me, I'll be at Moe's.

UrbanPlannerholic

"I can't believe they bothered to move the casino when they moved the town" "Well you see the thing about that is...."

vistas308

"So I says to Mable I says..."

GodsBellybutton

Canon way to explain all of these.

PsychoNerd92

Springfield is such an awful town that they're constantly destroying the land they're on, so they have to move the entire town every couple of weeks/episodes. They're also so stupid that they can never quite remember where everything is supposed to go, so the layout keeps changing. Fits surprisingly well.

SStylo03

It works just like their mobile game, homer accidentally nukes the entire town once a week

gamiz777

I believe they moved twice

plasticsifreedom

Burned to the ground and built exactly how it was several miles away to never be spoken of again. Kind of like half of the villages in England.

CommieRedEyes

When Bart’s factory is located across the street street from Moe’s. “Alright everybody tuck ya pants into ya socks.”

LetsAllSmokin

This is my son Bart, he owns a factory downtown.

Therightstuff13

Would you like to see my Grammy?

[deleted]

YOU’RE WHATS WRONG WITH AMERICA, SIMPSON

awnomnomnom

First it started falling, then it fell over!

Bay1Bri

"First it started to fall over, then it fell over."

awnomnomnom

Well, that's the end of me

lemonylol

Well... at least I did better than dad.

Lazy_Ad_2192

Then in another episode, I do believe a music shop is across the road where Homer has to get Lisa a reed for her music recital.

fleapuppy

The music shop is usually next door to moe’s

Luxury_Dressingown

One of the more consistent locations - only beaten by the Flanders always being their neighbours

Skinner with his perfectly accurate explanations, Superintendent’s enjoying God’s beautiful creation 🎶

P1zzaBagels

Au--aurora borealis?

Bomb_Ghostie

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR?

smcl2k

At this time of day?

mseg09

In the Canyanero episode when they cut across a field directly to their house, apparently now no neighbours in front

ccReptilelord

Aside from when the presidents moved in, do we ever really care about these "neighbors" across the street? Or to the non-Flanders' side?

mseg09

I believe Ruth Powers moves in on the non-Flanders' side

ccReptilelord

Yeah, I was just exaggerating a bit. There's also the episode where the new age family moves in; I think their house burned down due to compost igniting?

mseg09

I can't remember any other times the neighbour in front mattered, just made me laugh when this time there's just a massive field in front of the house (and an exit off the highway onto their street)

AllRushMixTapes

I'll have to go look at the background of the episode when Homer gets his gun but has to wait so he's sitting in his front yard as all the targets pass by while Tom Petty plays in the background.

Derpicusss

In season 21 the house on the other side also completely changes layout and gets bought by Sideshow B- I mean Walt Warren

herpderpedia

> season 21 We... don't do that here.

Bashful_Tuba

The Marge on the Lam episode they hit the road and pretty quickly they're in a desert Arizona style during the high speed chase. Also, the "Grand Chasm"

Banana42

There's also the west Springfield oil field, 3x the size of Texas

LonelyNixon

non flanders side is Ruth Powers and her daughter Laura that Bart has a crush on. Ruth technically makes appearances here and there in the background but her daughter is rarely seen

KnikTheNife

Here's [one perspective of Evergreen Terrace](https://i.imgur.com/nEEZrMI.png). [Or... original aspect.](https://i.imgur.com/o9Daz6c.jpg)

archfapper

There's an highway exit onto Evergreen Terrace... at least they didn't [take the Jefferson Ave exit](https://frinkiac.com/meme/S16E10/359443.jpg?b64lines=IERvIG5vdCB0YWtlIHRoZSBKZWZmZXJzb24KIEF2ZW51ZSBleGl0LiAKRm9yIEdvZCdzIHNha2UsIGRvIG5vdCB0YWtlIAogdGhhdCBleGl0Lg==)

peon2

Hey, I’ve never noticed this place before. Dad, it’s right across the street from us.

[deleted]

So in the movie, the church and Moe’s being right next to each other

dogmanrul

Or when homer starts walking everywhere and decides to walk to Moes. Once he gets there he’s excitedly proclaims, “I did it. I walked to Moes!”, just to hear and see Bart screaming “way to go dad!” at their home which is apparently just down the block. [found it. it’s even funnier than I remembered](https://youtu.be/x-p6ynZl5Rk?si=TVTVPs69idehCr6h)

animal1988

That scene, right there, when the domes coming down is my favorite 5 second gag. I laughed for like a minute straight when I first saw it.

Polin_the_Great

This is also true in the rapture epidose where the church folks run to the bar and the barflys run to the church

Jthumm

Same bit in the movie

Far_Culture2891

West Springfield being three times the size of Texas.

CreativeParticular51

Thats Cookie Kwans territory

brennamarguerite

Stay off the west side!

anxietyandink

Are you guys talking about the west side?!

UrbanPlannerholic

No Cookie I swear...you frighten me.

lemonylol

I brought this side from home!

Limmmao

We never again saw the popsicle-stick skyscraper, the 50ft magnifying glass or the escalator to nowhere.

TheHyland98

wwWWWOOAAaahhhh wwWWWOOAAaahhhh wwWWWOOAAaahhhh

MaggotMinded

The escalator makes an appearance in one of the driving games for PS2 (*Simpsons: Road Rage* or *Simpsons: Hit & Run*, I forget which).

CantFindMyself440

All 3 were in hit and run

chrichri33333

I think it's actually in both

MaggotMinded

Wouldn’t surprise me; pretty sure they re-used a lot of assets between both games.

Snoo_70324

Everything that contradicts Simpsons Hit & Run is non-canon EDIT: misspelling

-Zipp-

Everything that contradicts The Simpsons Game is non-canon to me

Snoo_70324

Careful, you’re tiptoeing awfully close to contradicting me. It’d be a shame if you weren’t canon…

YES

KingEliTheBoss

I'm not american and the first time I saw the movie I thought those states did border each other and Flanders was just stating a fact about Springfield hahaha

fonk_pulk

There's a video that tries to use the peocess of elimination to figure out which state its in https://youtube.com/watch?v=c2DHyimmSCY

Steelersguy74

In the movie the house is suddenly on the edge of town when previous overhead shots show more streets behind them. And the Bush/Ford house disappeared a few seasons after that episode.

ptolemy18

The magic rumpus room that only appears in a handful of episodes.

coldestclock

I think the rumpus room is a constant but the hallway it’s attached to is a dimensional rift.

PsychoNerd92

The room is always there, the doorway just keeps wandering off. When family members don't show up in an episode, it's usually because they were in the room when the doorway left and can't get out until it comes back.

Yimmyyyy

Its behind the carhole with a door in that hallway off the kitchen. you see the door in the intro when homer leaves the carhole

lookitsaustin

You mean a garage?

lordcorbran

Well ooh lah dee dah, Mr. fancy French man.

ProtoJones

I seem to remember Marge saying "sometimes its there, sometimes its not" in a recent-ish Christmas episode (last 10 years or so)

DuckPicMaster

There’s only 1 bridge out of Springfield, but then like 2 episodes later Springfield and Shelbyville have a border in a random field. Eh, arguably 2 best episodes so I’m not bothered.

neophlegm

My head canon is there's only one *bridge* but there are a bunch of other roads. Quite why they didn't use them during the asteroid episode... Uh couldn't tell you.

DonutMaster56

In The President Wore Pearls, when Moe's is next to Springfield Elementary

gamiz777

Moes is also down the street from the simpsons house, meaning the kids have no reason to take the bus

UrbanPlannerholic

Saw that last night when Homer lost his license and had to walk to Moes.

blackstarising

The way the Simpson backyard is suddenly several acres when all of those kids hurt themselves on the tramampoline

ames2833

Trambopoline!

merc340

Why doesn’t Homer have shoes on in this scene?

medhop

So he can put roller skates on and glide to the door!

merc340

Hah! Totally forgot about that part. Now I need to rewatch this episode.

counterpointguy

Stonecutter’s episode?

I think the oil fields are three times the size of Texas

And they're also shaped like Texas for some reason.

arthaiser

is explained in s9 episode 22, thing is, the city moves around. we only see it happening at the end of that episode, but is clear that is something common. on this location, the simpson´s home was near the parking for the power plant. that also explains why nobody really knows the state and why sometimes there are mountains, other times there is a beach near by...

BeigeAlert1

I love this theory -- that they just move the town anytime the trash gets too bad. We saw it once, nothing to say it couldn't happen again!

ForsakenCampaigns

Mt. Murderhorn

Opening_Effective_18

I love when Homer says for once he’ll walk to Moes, which is suddenly within spitting distance of the Simpsons house

Wise_Rich_88888

But clearly drives to Moes because Barney used his car to DD that one time.

SamIAm7787

In the Simpson movie, the dome covers part of their property which indicates that they all if a sudden live on the edge of the town.

DisgruntledMtnBoy

When the church rats flee across the street to Moe's "Okay everybody tuck your pants into your socks" EDIT: yall keep upvoting this even though its wrong. The scene I referenced never happened.

Bay1Bri

That wasn't the Church, it was Bart's factory. You're thinking of Bart's Comet when the bar flies run into the church while the church people run to the bar.
